Tree planted in Greece in honor of William Joyce

Every year in observance of Arbor Day, the Town of Greece plants a tree to both honor a member of the community and to promote the importance of trees for our environment. The Town of Greece has been named a Tree City USA every year since 1998.

This year, the Town of Greece recognized Arbor Day on June 22. Greece Town Supervisor Bill reilich was joined by Greece Town Board Members Mike Barry and Mike Bloomer for the Memorial Tree planting Ceremony. This year’s tree was planted in memory of William Joyce.

The tree planted this year was the Autumn Maple Flame. This tree has beautiful fall colors of crimson and scarlet,

turning red early in the season and holding well throughout the fall. The tree is located along the Greece Town Campus Walking track on the North end of campus with a monument placed at the base of the tree.

Among his many roles in the community, William was a volunteer with the Greece Volunteer Ambulance for over 40 years and was a commissioner of the Lake Shore Fire Department. RRH updates COVID-19 vaccine policy for staff

As of July 7, rochester regional Health (rrH) will no longer require the COVID-19 vaccine for employment, following the repeal of the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) mandate and the recent announcement by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) regarding the end of the COVID-19 vaccine requirement for healthcare workers at CMS-certified healthcare facilities.

As rrH aligns with the NYSDOH’s decision to fully repeal the COVID-19 vaccination mandate for healthcare facilities, the organization acknowledges the evolving landscape and the need for flexibility while upholding the safety and well-being of its employees, patients, and community.

“We are excited to share this update regarding our COVID-19 vaccine policy,” said Charlene Wilson, Chief Human resource Officer at rochester regional Health. “Our priority has always been the health and safety of our employees, patients, and community. With the NYSDOH’s repeal of the vaccine mandate, we believe this change will provide increased choice and autonomy for our dedicated staff.”

W hile the vaccine requirement is being lifted, rr H strongly encourages all employees and community members to consider the benefits of vaccination. Vaccination continues to be an essential tool in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and safeguarding public health. rrH will maintain vaccine availability at its facilities for those who wish to receive it.

St. John the Evangelist Church hosts Eucharistic Procession

On Sunday, June 11, Father Justin Miller, parochial Administrator at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Spencerport, held a Eucharistic procession. Members of the parish gathered after the 11:15 a.m. Mass outside of the church and proceeded to march around the block with our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist, reposed in a Monstrance. June 11 was the Feast of Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of Christ. We see in John’s Gospel chapter 6: 48-59 that the Bread and Wine are actually transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ.

There were over 100 people in attendance. The procession was led by members of the Knights of Columbus from the Spencerport Council 7707 and The St Joseph Assembly 2297 Color Corp. The route was from Amity Street to West Avenue and back, around the blocks via Martha Street and Church Street.

One Member in the procession commented, “I thought this was really beautiful. I was further back in the line and it made me think of scripture when the woman reached out and touch a tassel of Jesus and was healed. I found myself being thankful I was tall enough to see Jesus. “

“Also I have been reflecting lately on how I am a body and spirit made in God’s image. While walking along I could see my reflection and all of us following in the monstrance. Something about that felt fulfilling and I was seeing the body of Christ reflected back. I’m feeling so much love leaving church today.”

It was a very uplifting day for all those who were in attendance.

Spencerport couple celebrates 65 years of marriage while serving others

John and Carol Green, of Spencerport, met in Johnstown, NY, where they became high school sweethearts. They married 65 years ago, on July 12, 1958, in Carol’s family Baptist church. Carol was a concert violinist and played first chair in the Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra. John served in the Army and National Guard from 1955 to 1964 and was based out of Fort Drum.

The couple moved to the Rochester area after their good friends relocated here. John got hired at Kodak as a machinist and spent his career there. The Greens purchased their home in Spencerport in 1968. At the time, the area was very rural with cow pastures surrounding the property. “We had a mammoth garden that Dad would use his father’s Gravely Tractor to rototill,” recalls their daughter, Brenda Green.

The Greens had three children, and Carol was a stay-at-home mom until they became school-aged. She then worked part-time at Sears and Roebuck at Longridge Mall where she could be found in the candy department, especially at Easter time making Easter baskets for children.

When reflecting on her parents’ 65 years of life together, Brenda said, “God was always the center of our life and home.”

Shortly after moving to western Monroe County, the Greens became very active at First Bible Baptist Church. They first attended in December 1966 when the church was in the Greece Town Hall. This was the beginning of their lifelong involvement, fellowship, and dedication to the church community. The Greens helped with all three new church buildings since 1966, both physically and financially. They were also very involved with the summer camp called Circle 7 Ranch where John would use his military training and help teach gun lessons. John and Carol Green were married July 12, 1958.

Carol and John Green are in their mid and upper eighties, but that does not stop them from showing their affection for one another and their patriotism, while being active in doing the things they love and serving others. Carol still plays the violin and gardens. She also bakes her husband his favorite pie every Saturday. John continues to take care of his property at their Spencerport homestead and loves feeding the birds. “Dad is in charge of the laundry; he is the laundry master,” chuckled Brenda. The family celebrated the couple’s anniversary on July 4. But where might you find them on their actual 65th wedding anniversary? Anyone who attended FBBC’s Spirit of America 4th of July and had a glo-stick, or anything that lit-up, it was John and Carol who were responsible for selling all 5,000 of them.

John used his military training to help teach gun lessons to summer camp attendees in the 1970s.

PHHS hosts presentation on Miracle on the Hudson

On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 made an emergency landing on the Hudson River after encountering a flock of birds that damaged both engines. The safe landing of the plane, also known as the “Miracle on the Hudson,” was an incredible feat of leadership and teamwork in the face of a crisis. The event demonstrated the importance of having strong leaders and effective teamwork, not just in aviation but in any situation that requires quick

decision-making and action under pressure.

The Parma Hilton Historical Society will host Dan Vinton, a Hilton native and survivor of Flight 1549, for a special presentation. He will share his experience with the community on Thursday, July 20, at 7 p.m. in the Ingham Room at the Hilton Community Center. Dairy in the Classroom Educator Workshop

Monroe County teachers of grades K-8 are invited to attend a free Dairy in the Classroom Educator Workshop on Wednesday, August 9, from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at Springdale Farm’s Balcony Point and Riedman Robotic Milking Center, 700 Colby Street, Spencerport. The workshop is presented by the New York State Ag in the Classroom Program and Monroe County 4-H Educators.

Teachers will make the connection from dairy to the classroom during this hands-on experience that includes a farm tour and cheesemaking. The workshop is free to educators, includes breakfast and lunch, and a resource bundle for teachers to use in their classrooms. Participants will also receive six CTLE credits for attending.

SGNY welcomes The Hyssongs July 15

Southern Gospel New York welcomes The Hyssongs in concert on Saturday, July 15, 4 p.m., at Spencerport Bible Church, 1948 North Union Street, Spencerport.

Dell, Susan and Richard Hyssong travel fulltime as the award-winning Hyssongs. Their family ministry combines vocal harmony, humor and brass instruments (trumpet and trombone) to delight audiences with their Christ-centered message, shared through music. The family’s classical music background, along with their harmony and specific chord structures, lend them a unique sound that has

made quite an impact on audiences. In 2016, they received the Artist of the Year award from Southern Gospel NY concert attendees in Spencerport.

On July 19, 2008, the Hyssongs celebrated the birth of Makayla, Richard and his wife, Kelly’s, newborn. That excitement quickly changed to horror three days later. The doctors discovered more than twenty tumors in Makayla’s heart with one blocking 75 percent of the blood flow. When she was thirteen days old, masses of brain tumors were found. They were told their baby probably would not survive, and if she did, she would not walk, talk, or ever be like other children. The Hyssongs released Makayla’s Heart: Moment By Moment, a book which chronicles their journey through heartaches and triumphs.

Dell Hyssong relates, “Everyone who has heard about Makayla wanted us to put her story in writing. Her miraculous life has emboldened many to remain strong in their faith and gives hope to those going through difficult situations. As I wrote her story along with co-author Holly Weiss, my prayer was that many lives would change as a result of reading our story. We also wanted to give readers a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes of our itinerant ministry. Our family is just like everyone else’s: we hurt, laugh, and cry, but know that no matter what comes our way, God is always in control.”

St. Luke’s Book Sale back by popular demand

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church will hold its Annual Book Sale, Thursday, July 13, through Saturday, July 15, in the Parish Hall, 14 State Street, Brockport. Sale hours are: Thursday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 5

p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The fundraiser coincides with the Brockport Merchants’ Association’s Annual Sidewalk Sale and is a longtime community favorite.

“People tell us they look forward to

our book sale each year and come prepared to stock up on all their favorite authors. It is fun welcoming them back as they share their joy of reading and pleasure in shopping our sale,” says Ricki DeBaun, who, with Committee Co-Chair and fellow St. Luke’s member Katherine Kristansen, spearhead the threeday event. “St. Luke’s has held its Annual Book Sale for decades, and each year we look forward to the sale as much as our customers do.”

St. Luke’s collects reading materials throughout the year for adults, teens and children, including hundreds of hardcovers and paperbacks in all genres, plus puzzles, CDs, DVDs, and even cassette tapes. “This year, we also have many board games for all ages. The money we raise from the sale is used to help fund our community mission projects. It’s a way of giving back to the community while serving God and one another,” says DeBaun. “Saturday, the final day of the sale, books are sold by the bag full, but you will want to shop early for best selections.”

GCV&M to host a sweet celebration of chocolate

Genesee Country Village & Museum welcomes visitors to a truly sweet weekend – the annual Celebrating Chocolate event on Saturday and Sunday, July 15 and 16. Guests will have the opportunity to sample both sweet and savory recipes as they explore the Historic Village, learn about early uses of chocolate, watch cooking demonstrations, take a pop-up baking class, learn from local chocolatiers, and more.

As visitors make their way around the 19th-century Historic Village, they will have the opportunity to taste all of the following historical delicacies: Chocolate Custard (Jones Farm Kitchen), Miss Leslie’s First Chocolate Cake (Livingston-Backus House Kitchen), Wisconsin Spice Cake (Hamilton House), Cocoa Shell Tea (Hosmer’s Inn), Vanilla Ice Cream with Chocolate Sauce (Meeting Center Lounge), Chocolate Intensity (Meeting Center Lounge), “Trail Mix” Cookies (Meeting Center Lounge), and Chocolate Balsamic Vinaigrette with Vegetables (Meeting Center Lounge).

Saturday, July 1, 2023, at age 76. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Roger Gilbert, parents, brother, Donald, sisters, Nancy and Helen. Peggy was a proud volunteer for Spencerport Ambulance for over 25 years and volunteered for 6 years at Quest School and was known as Grandma to all. David Sadewasser

David (Saddy) Sadewasser passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on July 1, 2023, at age 47. He was predeceased by his parents, Charlie and Rita Sadewasser. Dave is survived by his daughter, Brianna Sadewasser; his beloved soulmate and wife, Jenny Lemcke-Sadewasser; his bonus children, Matt Lemcke, Johnny Boy Tanis, Cody Tanis, and Abby Tanis; his siblings, Debbie Sadewasser-Young (Jim), Suzie Alley, Jan Michael (Vinny), Kim Huffer (Mike-A), and Matt (Homer) Green (Dawn); and countless family members and close friends. Dave felt most at home while in the woods, hunting or fishing, or taking nature walks with his family. The love he had for his family and friends was unmatched, and will live on in memory of those he loved most.

Charles Lambert Brehse

Charles L. Brehse, 78, formerly of Hamlin, NY, passed away on June 20th in Des Moines, IA. He was a graduate of Kendall Central School and Michigan State University. He and his wife, Pat, built a beautiful life together in Carlisle, Iowa, where he worked as a farm machinery representative for New Holland Equipment for 34 years.

Family, travel, church, golf, and his cars were the cornerstones of Chuck’s life. He took great pride in maintaining a manicured lawn, a clean garage, and spotless cars. Chuck’s love for music was evident as he enjoyed listening to quartets and singing in the Men’s Choir at church. His enthusiam for life was contagious.

Chuck is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia; son, Kenneth Brehse; daughter, Deborah (Clint) Smalley; grandchildren, Connor, Cameron, Cael, and Carter Smalley; sister Kathleen (Kevin) Noon; and sister-in-law Sandra Brehse, along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Franklin Brehse; mother, Ardeen Brehse; daughter, Tricia Brehse; and brother, Robert Brehse.

His funeral was held at the Carlisle United Methodist Church, 405 School Street, Carlisle, Iowa, 50047 on Tuesday, June 27. Bud enjoyed learning and mastering many hobbies; fly fishing and hunting were his passion. He was a member of the local Seth Green Trout Unlimited for over 40 years and a member of the Radio Control Club of Rochester (RCCR). Bud was a retiree of Eastman Kodak Company, in the Copy Products division, with over 25 years of service.

Bill and Sally were looking forward to their first great grandchild, from Zachari and Anna Kate, who is soon to be born. Many friends in Orleans and Western Monroe counties remember Bill from his many years as a pharmacist, including at Fays and Eckerd in Albion, and Rite Aid in Albion and Brockport, before Bill retired in 2010. Bill enjoyed golfing and working at Salmon Creek Country Club.

Friends of Hamlin Beach State Park receive grant to increase accessibility

On June 30, the statewide non-profit organization Parks & Trails New York presented a “big check” to the Friends of Hamlin Beach State Park in the amount of $29,118 for equipment to enhance the accessibility to Hamlin Beach State Park. Items include Mobi Mats to allow easier access to the water and greater flexibility in using the beach area, especially during busy weekends; a floating beach chair will allow those who are physically unable to swim to be able to float safely in the water under the watchful eyes of the lifeguards; and wheelchair accessible picnic tables and benches.

Time Machine Music Fest in Hilton to support cancer research

Master Gardeners revive Fair Flower Show

Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners are happy to announce a popular fair exhibit will be back this year after a several year hiatus. The Orleans County Fair Flower Show will once again be featured alongside the Master Gardener booth in the Lartz Building during the Orleans County 4-H Fair July 24 through 29. The Flower Show is a chance for the general public to showcase some of their favorite horticultural pieces from home. Anyone in the community can enter an exhibit in one of eight categories – Fairy Garden, Floral Arrangement, Houseplant, Succulent, Unique Container, Hanging Basket/Urn/Pot, Garden Accent, and Miscellaneous. This year’s Flower Show will be the first since 2019.

The Flower Show got its start in Orleans County in 2015. At the time, CCE Orleans was lucky enough to have Amanda Mrzywka, now a board member and owner of Navarra’s Farm Market and Greenhouse in Albion, working as an Americorps intern. Amanda was able to dedicate her time to making sure the first Orleans County Flower Show got off to a great start. She studied Flower Shows from across the state and country, and modeled the fledgling Orleans County show after the highly popular show at the Erie County Fair. The first year of the Orleans County Flower Show was a great success, and with Amanda on board as a Master Gardener Volunteer and with the help from a grant from GoArt, the Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council, the Flower Show continued for several years until 2019 when Amanda stepped away as a Master Gardener to focus on her thriving business. This year, Orleans County Master Gardeners decided it was time to bring the Flower Show back.

Master Gardener Volunteers Nancy Halstead, Brenda Radzinski, and Linda Oakes formed a committee and set to work planning for the revival of the Flower Show for the 2023 Orleans County 4-H Fair.

“With a surge of interest in gardening following COVID, we wanted to provide fairgoers not only the opportunity to participate in a flower and gardening exhibit, but also maybe to gather ideas from their fellow gardeners in the community,” explained Nancy

Patriot Trip for local veterans

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (139 District) is hosting a Patriot Trip to Washington, D.C., which will take place from September 21 to 24. During this time, veterans and their families will get a tour of the nation’s capital and its numerous monuments and landmarks that honor those who served. This year’s trip will feature stops at several notable locations in the D.C. area, including the WWII, Korean, and Vietnam War memorials and Arlington National Cemetery.

“This trip is an excellent opportunity to honor not only our local veterans but also those who served before them,” said Hawley. “I am incredibly excited to host this event for another

year. We owe our veterans a deep level of gratitude for all they have sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy in this country, so being able to take them to our nation’s capital to see these historic landmarks is truly an honor.” This trip is open to all military veterans and their families. The cost will be between $450 and $500 per person and includes travel, accommodations, admissions, meals and even some souvenirs. The committee followed many of the previous Flower Show’s guidelines, but opted for a more relaxed, low-key show this year. There are fewer categories than in the past and less restrictive protocols to follow. The biggest change in this year’s Flower Show is that it will be judged by the public instead of by hired official Flower Show judges. Fairgoers will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite exhibits by paper ballot Monday through Thursday of fair week (July 24 through 27). Votes will be tallied and ribbons for each category will be displayed on Friday and Saturday, typically the two busiest days of fair.

“We decided to go with a less restrictive format this year to gauge interest from the public before attempting a standard flower show which can be costly and has much stricter guidelines,” said Halstead.

The main goal of the Flower Show this year will be to showcase community members’ creativity and prowess in their gardens and to beautify the Lartz building, often filled with vendors and community businesses displaying their organization’s goods. The Flower Show will be displayed adjacent to the Master Gardener booth, bringing vibrant life and color to the area.

“The main reason why I love the Flower Show is that it combines art with gardening,” said Brenda Radzinski, Master Gardener Volunteer and Flower Show committee member. “I love seeing the unusual varieties of flowers and creative ways to display them. I really look forward to seeing what Orleans County gardeners come up with.”

The 2023 Orleans County Fair Flower Show is open to all ages. Each exhibitor can enter up to three pieces in each category. Pre-registration is required and paperwork must be received in the Orleans County CCE office by Monday, July 17. As an added bonus, each exhibitor will receive one free week-long fair pass for their participation and to tend to their exhibits throughout the week.

“The biggest reason why we wanted to bring the Flower Show back is that flowers make people feel good,” said Linda Oakes, a long-time Master Gardener and the third member of the Flower Show committee.

“Whenever people are out and about, seeing gardens and seeing flowers just makes people happy, and we wanted to bring that happiness back to the Orleans County Fair.”

The Parma Greece UCC, 1211 Manitou Road, is hosting a Labyrinth Walk on July 14, 15 and 16. The community is invited to come and take advantage of this walking meditation. The labyrinth will be available in the church’s Fellowship Hall on Friday and Saturday, from 7 to 9 p.m., and immediately following worship on Sunday, from 10:30 a.m. until noon.

A labyrinth is a patterned path, often circular in form, used as a spiritual practice; it is not a maze. A labyrinth’s walkway is arranged in such a way that the participant moves back and forth in silence across the circular form through a series of curves, ending at the labyrinth’s heart or center. According to labyrinthsociety.org, “For a majority of walkers (66% - 82%) labyrinth walking increased levels of relaxation, clarity, peace, centeredness, openness, quiet, and reflectiveness, and reduced levels of anxiety, stress, and agitation. The experience of labyrinth walking supports recovery, renewal, integration of the whole person, and facilitating a sense of harmony.”

The labyrinth will be located inside the church’s Fellowship Hall which is transformed into a Sacred Space for this event and is free and open to the public. The walk is unguided so people can arrive and leave at any time during this event. There will also be seating for those who prefer to meditate without walking the labyrinth. Growing cherries in the home landscape

If you are enjoying the local cherry crop, you might be thinking about growing cherries in your own yard. Cherries offer flowers in early spring and edible fruit in early summer. Sour cherries can be used for pies and desserts, while sweet cherries are most often eaten fresh or in salads, main dishes and desserts.

Iowa State University

Extension says to avoid wet and poorly drained sites if you want to plant a cherry tree. They do best in moist, well-drained, fertile soils. Cherries can get root rots when they are grown in poorly-drained areas. Sun is also important. Pick a site that gets at least eight hours of sun each day.

Sweet cherries bloom earlier than sour cherries and are therefore more prone to damage from late spring frosts. Keep cherry trees away from cold spots in your yard as well as southern or western exposure that can encourage early bloom.

According to Iowa State, sour cherries are self-fruitful. You only need to plant one tree for pollination and fruit set. Some sweet cherry varieties such as BlackGold and WhiteGold from Cornell University are self-fruitful. Other sweet cherry varieties may need cross-pollination from a different cherry variety in order to get fruit set.

As with other fruit trees, cherries need to be pruned for optimal fruit production. You can prune in late winter while the trees are dormant or in late summer if you have had disease issues. For sour cherries, remove broken, dead and crossed branches as well as any suckers or waterspouts growing at the base of the tree. Aim for a large vase-shape, topping young trees by cutting the central leading stem. Remove vertical, hanging and thin branches. Sweet cherries require less pruning. Prune along a central leader, removing broken, dead and crossed branches. Remove vertical shoots competing with the central stem. Prune all cherry trees back by about one-third annually.

Cherry trees can be attacked by insect and disease pests. Iowa State notes that damage typically is minor, and advises spraying only in certain situations. The most common plant disease is cherry leaf spot, caused by a fungus. Infected leaves develop small, purple-brown spots before turning yellow and falling off. Fruit can also be affected by a fungal disease called

brown rot. Fruits develop round, light brown spots that expand and rot the fruit within a couple of days. Fruits have visible tufts of grey fuzz. I have been battling this disease in my garden. It moves fast. Iowa State and other sources say good sanitation is the best way to control fungal disease. Remove fallen leaves and affected fruit, including fruit that remains on the tree.

Pests include cherry fruit flies, which lay eggs on developing fruit in May. Fruit becomes shrunken and shriveled when ripe and usually contains one off-white maggot. Trees can be sprayed with a labeled insecticide when adults emerge and before females lay their eggs inside young fruit. The egg laying can occur over an extended period of time requiring several sprays. Yellow sticky traps can help you monitor the presence of fruit flies. Read and follow label directions whenever you use insecticides.

Birds are also an issue with cherries – they love the fruit, too. If you don’t want to share, cover the entire tree canopy with netting and secure to the tree trunk or ground. Scare devices such as aluminum pie tins or inflatable balloons can also be used.

Harvest sour cherries when the fruit is full-flavored and somewhat soft and juicy. Sweet cherries are harvested when the fruit is at the proper size, uniformly colored and has its characteristic flavor. If you are eating the cherries immediately, you don’t need to harvest the stem. If you are storing them for a time, leaving the stem in-tact can help retain quality.

Anthony Ferris, of Spencerport, attended the New York Amateur Hockey Association/USA Hockey U-14 Player Development Camp, held at SUNY Oswego June 25 through 29, 2023. Anthony was one of 80 players selected from a pool of 370 players from around New York State to attend. The U-14 camp is the first stage in USA Hockey’s Player Development Program which fields teams for international and Olympic competition.
