Spencerport veteran retires to a chapter of serving others by Tami Raco Bud Moran of Spencerport served in the Army as a 19-year-old in 1966. He spent most of his service time deployed in Germany during the Vietnam War. Moran served in the 3rd Infantry Division, C-company 1st of the 64th Armor Battalion, which provided support to the 1st of the 15th Infantry Regiment. Bud Moran’s 1966 Army photo. Moran drove a 52-ton tank. “You either drive over it or through it,” he chuckled. Although he was a young man when he was a soldier in the Army, Bud reflects on the life skills and work ethic that imprinted on his life thanks to these experiences serving our country. “Simple things like making your bed every morning were required by us and it was those daily regiments that taught me discipline, as well as respect for authority and taking pride in my work,” said Bud. When Bud returned to civilian life 1968, being a veteran was not something you would share with most people. He recalls that many veterans who returned home during that era were spit at for their service. “It just wasn’t something you would discuss,” said Bud. Before Bud left for his deployment, he planned to become a home builder, but when he came back to Rochester it was a brutal winter and his fiancé encouraged him to apply for a job a Xerox. This prompting led to a lifelong career working in the Information Technology Department at the company. Bud married his sweetheart in 1969 and they had three children and now four grandchildren. Just before Bud’s 60th birthday he retired due to a downsizing at Xerox. He has been retired for almost 15 years now, but his retirement led him to a renewed purpose dedicated to helping local veterans and their families. In addition to enjoying his time with his family and granddaughters, he has been dedicating much of his time and heart in serving other veterans from the community. For the past fifteen years, Bud has served as a member of the Ferris-Goodridge American Legion Post in Spencerport. He helps with upkeep of the property, cutting grass and maintaining the grounds. This led him to another volunteer opportunity with the Monroe County American Legion Honor Guard. The Honor Guard provides Military Honors Services for deceased veterans and the “Final Salute” which is rendered by the Honor Guard as a reverent and solemn service to bid a veteran farewell. The “Final Salute” consists

of a prayer, the firing of the rifles, the sounding of taps, the folding and presenting of the American Flag under which the veteran served, and placing a poppy on the urn or casket signifiying the veteran will not be forgotten. Finally, a salute is executed with a blessing that the veteran rest in peace. Bud participates in more than two hundred veteran funerals a year. Moran also is a volunteer with the Learn to Skate Program for Veterans offered by Compeer and the Rochester Amerks Alumni program. This program helps assimilate veterans from their military lifestyle to a civilian life. Often these are veterans who are coming from the VA hospital or facing service-related issues. On Sundays during the winter months, Bud can be found out on the ice helping at the veterans Sunday Family Skate events. The Amerks

Alumni organization provides equipment and offers learn to skate lessons for veterans and their families. He has been a hockey player most of his life and met a lot of Amerk players through officiating games, so it was a natural fit for Bud to volunteer in this program. He helps with refereeing veterans’ hockey, but what he loves most is helping veterans and veterans’ children and grandchildren learn how to skate and, more importantly, how to overcome fear. “My favorite part is seeing their smiles,” said Bud. Often when a person retires, they are looking for ways to do less. But Bud Moran has a different outlook. “When you retire from your job you must retire to something. Kicking Out Breast Cancer – The Hilton girls varsity soccer team presented Mary Manard Reed, marketing and outreach director for the Breast Cancer Coalition, with a check for $4,645.25 on October 28. Farewell to 25 years of

“Christmas on the Canal”

What do you think of when you imagine an old fashioned Christmas? For me, in 1996, it meant presenting an idea to the Village of Spencerport of hosting a traditional Christmas celebration in a way that was not over commercialized, but rather simple and wholesome. A fun outdoors event, beginning mid-day and ending soon after dark, in which this community of family and friends could enjoy the spirit of the season as the excitement of the upcoming holiday approached. Christmas music echoed down Union Street as mostly local entertainers and choirs performed seasonal songs on a portable stage loaned by the Village of Hilton. It was a time for shy, and sometimes bold, visits with Santa Claus and his Mrs. Free craft activities were enjoyed in the Children’s Tent. There was a Living Nativity with a narration of the birth of Christ reenacted by angels and the holy family. Horse drawn hayrides tread a leisurely pace around the block on the side streets throughout the day. Merchants opened their shops along with the Spencerport Canal Museum where children could make a card for the troops. Local dance studios performed on the street surrounded by the cheering crowd. Hot chocolate, coffee and food vendors sustained you amidst the cold and swirling flurries. Safety was never a concern as thankfully the Odgen Special Police stood watch and directed traffic all day and night as well as the Spencerport Volunteer Ambulance who was always there on call. Church bells rang throughout the village at a dusky 5:00pm signaling the assembling at the gazebo for the lighting of the tree and some community carols. A pastor offered a blessing and reminded us of the true meaning of the season. Finally, it was time for the one mile Candlelight Caroling Stroll led by horse and wagon through the village streets, a glowing sight to behold with candles and carolers in tow, and the initial reason the event was presented. We never missed stopping in front of Wedgwood Nursing Home bringing some joy as we caroled for the residents there. Who knew when it began in 1996 that Christmas on the Canal was to become a hometown tradition that would ring throughout the village for the next 25 years. Last year the event was labeled “24 & 1/2 years” when in actuality it was our 25th year. Why did we do that? In 2020 Covid 19 ravaged the country and the event was cancelled and so in 2021 a smaller event was held at the gazebo. This was partly due to the construction on Union Street and East Avenue in which the area no longer could accommodate the Children’s Craft Tent. Keeping the Living Nativity in the event also posed a lingering health issue as the remnants of Covid continued and the exchange of costumes amongst the public, as well as having people pet the animals, sealed the decision to omit the activity. Lastly, it was not at all a safe idea to move either of these activities onto the banks of the canal with the assembling of the public. Thus the shortening of the title in December of 2021. At this time it is with mixed emotions that I inform the community that there will no longer be another Christmas on the Canal. In the future someone may begin another holiday event, but there will always be only one “Christmas on the Canal” that has filled our memories with this kind of gingerbread feeling. Twenty five years is a jubilee that can be recorded as one accomplished with pride, but mostly accomplished with a spirit of joyful giving to the community of Spencerport. All of you, your families and friends, will never know the immense joy you have given me as I watched, each year after months of planning, the streets fill up (always the second Sunday after Thanksgiving…) in celebration and unity of spirit. I have watched you, your children and yes, even your grandchildren grow through the 25 years. I always said if I could ever write a script for a Hallmark movie this would be it. How can I ever thank everyone? It is impossible to name everyone here so please forgive any omissions. I will start with some people I have had on my committee for many years such as my most dedicated team of Sandy Saylor, Gail McQuilkin, Jackie Lobene, Alice Sidoti, and the late Ted Walker. Together we got it done over cups of cocoa, coffee and Gail’s cookies and desserts. Thank you to all of the following: The Ogden Special Police, Spencerport Ambulance, the Rotary, the Kiwanis, the Lion’s, Spencerport Schools, Spencerport Chamber, Spencerport Canal Museum, Spencerport Tim Horton’s, the Town of Ogden and the Village of Spencerport. A special thanks to Kate Hodder and Greg Dorgan for their unending help. Thank you to anyone who donated funds, and to Ralph (my elf) Parmalee who took the reins and kept donations coming in. Thanks to the local churches for the ringing of the bells; Good News Community Church for the Living Nativity, and to every Pastor who spread the message. Much appreciation to Westside News for their gratuitous publicity of our press releases. A heartfelt thanks to my husband Al, our son Nick and grandson Joe, our sons in law Gian Ruggiero and Dave Marianetti, for always being there before and during the event to set up or tear down in the freezing cold. My daughters Amy, Alicia, and Christy volunteered in various ways whenever needed. With the support of my family, my grandchildren and my dear friends, (who I wrangled into volunteering), what more could I have hoped for? They are the reason I will never lose my Christmas sparkle. From the bottom of my heart, whether you helped with the entirety of this event or even one small helpful deed, just know that no effort has ever gone unappreciated. They say it takes a village, and yes, it took one: Spencerport Village. Thank you all for the wonderful years of a magical Christmas event that I will be forever proud and grateful to have been an integral part of. It was truly a special place in time, forever engraved in a corner of our memories. In parting I give you our motto and say for the last time:

Ogden’s Highway Department has begun collecting loose leaves in a round robin schedule through all four quadrants. The final week of loose-leaf collection will begin on November 28th, ending on December 2nd. After December 2nd, residents will be required to put leaves in biodegradable bags at the roadside for pickup.

* Leaf piles should only contain leaves. Do not mix with brush or other material. * Place loose leaves at the edge of your property but not in the gutter or road. * Please don’t place leaves behind obstacles such as: trees, cars, mailboxes, fire hydrants, light poles, etc.

Stormwater Tips: Keep Our Storm Sewers Flowing

Ogden’s storm sewers, along with our creeks, streams and stormwater management facilities, help manage stormwater runoff to keep our roads and neighborhoods from flooding during heavy rain events. Debris, such as leaves and grass clippings dumped into creeks and ponds or blown into the road will accumulate and block storm sewer grates and pipes, causing backups and potential flooding. The highway crew does a job responding to drainage and flooding issues that could have been prevented. The Town of Ogden provides several services to assist residents with the removal of yard debris. If residents encounter a blocked creek, a plugged inflow/outflow pipe in a neighborhood stormwater facility, or experience flooding on your street, please contact the Highway Department at 585-617-6160.

BRUSH PICKUP FOR 2022 HAS ENDED Ogden brush pickup is scheduled from April-October, annually. The highway department offers free brush collection for branches and bushes, (no leaves or grass clippings.) Brush must be at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the Monday of your scheduled pickup week. Brush pickup will resume in April 2023. Harvey C. Noone Legion Family honors veterans As the Village of Churchville and the Town of Riga prepare to celebrate Veterans on November 11, the Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post 954 has been active. The Legion along with the Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion purchased lawn signs for veterans to display on their lawn to thank them for their service prior to Veterans Day. This display is the first year of an annual thank you to veterans. Legion members also went to the airport to welcome back the last Honor Flight of the year on Sunday, October 23. In particular, the Legion and Girl Scout Troop 60487 welcomed back long-time Harvey C. Noone Legion member David Everhart, who accompanied his fellow veterans on this flight. Attendees said it was another joyous occasion to honor these men and women who served their nation.

Lastly, Harvey C. Noone is sponsoring their first Veterans Day Cash Bash raffle that will be drawn at the Churchville Chamber of Commerce luncheon honoring veterans. In 2020 he was contracted by Boeing Company supporting NASA and the Artemis rocket in Louisiana and Florida. Dale was a member of the American Legion and the Northstar Sportsman Club. His hobbies included woodworking, NASCAR, and auto mechanics. Visitation for Dale will be on Sunday, November 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Walker Brothers Funeral Home, 15 West Avenue, Spencerport. Story of Hope Hospice Care Home opening soon by Tami Raco Story of Hope Hospice Comfort Care Home has been a working dream for the past eight years. Arlene Nanry, a hospice nurse, spent her career providing care to terminally ill patients. Her compassion and desire to bring the highest care to those at the end of their life led her to form a team of volunteers to open a needed comfort care home to the area. The Story of Hope acquired their building on 813 Marshall Road in Chili in April of 2021. With the help of donors, fundraising, and volunteers with a big investment of time, materials, and heart, the Story of Hope is in the final stage of turning the building into a hospice care home. Story of Hope Comfort Care Home hopes to be caring for their first residents by the end of this year. The non-profit comfort care home will house two end-of-life residents at a

time and will ensure a small, personal, home-like atmosphere for those in their care. Task Force on School Safety & Security held forum in Ogden The Assembly Minority Task Force on School Safety & Security (task force), which was formed to collect feedback from stakeholders across the state in response to the increased acts of violence in schools, and to effectively address measures to keep our children and educators safe while on school grounds, hosted its fourth of five regional forums in Monroe County. The Rochester Regional Forum was hosted by Assemblyman Josh Jensen (R,C,I-Greece) at the Ogden Town Hall on October 27. “Sadly, threats and acts of violence have become all too common in our schools and on school-grounds. As a parent and elected official, I know full well that we cannot allow these troubling and violent episodes to interrupt learning, terrify our children, target teachers and devastate our communities,” said Assemblyman Jensen. “What works in one school may not be the answer for another, however, I

believe that all voices must be heard and I am proud that my colleagues and I in the Assembly Minority are willing to hear directly from those in our school environment and subject matter experts so we may prioritize which common sense measures to propose legislatively.” The forum was designed to collect feedback from education professionals, mental-health experts, parents, law-enforcement officials and other community stakeholders in New York state to assist the Conference with suggestions and solutions to improve school safety and security. At the conclusion of the five forums, a report including a summary of findings and targeted solutions will be generated and brought to the Legislature and presented to the governor. Sweden Supervisor participates in roundtable discussion on crime Town of Sweden Supervisor Kevin Johnson participated in a November 1 roundtable discussion regarding the increase in violent crime and the changes in state laws that have reduced the effectiveness of law enforcement efforts and left many Monroe County residents feeling less safe. The meeting was hosted by Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter and attended by law enforcement officers, pastors, local government representatives, crime victims, medical professionals, business and civic leaders. The group’s focus was on pursuing strategic legislation for dangerous and repeat offender standards. Recent NYS laws have essentially eliminated judges’ ability to hold detainees who have demonstrated dangerousness or who are repeat offenders. Statistics from the Rochester Police Department show that homicides have increased over 200% from the 2017-2019 time span (88) to the 2020-2022 time span (200). Additionally, shooting victims have more than doubled from 20172019 (504) to 2020-2022 (1,055). Johnson co-authored a letter from the Monroe County Supervisors’ Association to Governor Hochul stating that “A downturn in the quality of life

in the city of Rochester has a negative impact on the Towns of Monroe County, but we are also seeing our own problems in addition to those in the city. Our people and businesses are being victimized by this crime, and in many places in our County there is a general sense of loss of safety, security and quality of life.” Other groups sent similar letters to state officials over recent months and the November 1 meeting was an effort to bring many of those groups together to collectively pressure Albany lawmakers to address the problems. “Giving judges the discretion to hold dangerous or repeat offenders is a common sense proposal supported by all of the participants,” Johnson said of the meeting. In the Town of Sweden, Johnson has heard from residents, business owners and sheriff ’s deputies about increases in property crimes. “Today’s after-hours break-in at a local store or the theft of catalytic converters from cars in hotel parking lots can turn into something much more tragic tomorrow.” The group’s next steps include a letter to state representatives defining recommended legislative changes. Thankful for community support The Hilton-Parma Fire District Chiefs and Commissioners would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to all the residents that supported us as we pursued keeping an ALS Ambulance in the community. We are amazed at the backing that we received, and the thoughtful and caring residents that came to speak on our behalf at the Public Information Meetings.

Although, at the end, we were unsuccessful in obtaining what we wanted for the community, we look forward to working with Monroe Ambulance, and the professional staff that are employed there. Riga Recreation’s Halloween Parade Even the early rain could not dampen the spirits of “Trick-or-Treaters” for the Riga Recreation/ Churchville Lions Club annual Halloween Parade on Monday, October 31. The large and enthusiastic crowd of “Tricksters” were led through the streets of Churchville by the Churchville Fire Truck and “Fairy Godmother” (Lion Verna) to the nicely decorated Village Gazebo, where they were greeted by the Churchville Lions Club and Union Congregational Church members to receive goodie bags and apples. Local business gift certificates were also given to uniquely costumed boys and girls.

Legal NoticeS Legal Notice Notice of Special Meeting of the Qualified Voters of Spencerport Central School District NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a special meeting of the qualified voters of the Spencerport Central School District shall be held at the Administration Building, 71 Lyell Avenue, Spencerport, New York, on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. The following proposition will be submitted for voter approval at said meeting: PROPOSITION Shall the following resolution be adopted to wit: Resolved that the Board of Education of the Spencerport Central School District is hereby authorized to undertake certain capital improvements consisting of construction and reconstruction of existing school buildings and facilities, various site improvements and the acquisition of certain original furnishings, equipment, and apparatus and other incidental improvements required in connection therewith for such construction and school use, all at an estimated maximum aggregate cost of $23,410,000; and to appropriate and expend from the existing capital reserve fund $800,000 for such costs, and that the balance of such cost, or so much thereof as may be necessary, shall be raised by the levy of a tax to be collected in annual installments, with such tax to be offset by state aid available therefor; and, in anticipation of such tax, debt obligations of the school district as may be necessary not to exceed $22,610,000 shall be issued. Cheer delivered to Batavia VA In continuing its relationship with the Batavia VA Medical Center, the Harvey C. Noone Churchville American Legion Auxiliary Unit 954 recently visited Cindy Baker, Center for Development and Civic Engagement Specialist. The Churchville Auxiliary delivered some early holiday cheer with several items. First, was a donation in the amount of $400 from the Churchville Auxiliary. The money will purchase each of their eighty patients, one female and 79 males, their own individual canteen books. These books contain coupons that allow residents to purchase items and necessities. The canteen books will be inside holiday cards sent by the Auxiliary to each person, letting them know they are thought of during the holiday season. Second, Harvey C. Noone American Legion donated bags of full-size toiletry items, new clothes, arts and crafts, calendars, daily planners, puzzle books, and even pictures for their walls. The Auxiliary has been collecting items throughout the year and will continue to do so. If you would like to donate items, please see below. Lastly, as a special something for the veterans, the Auxiliary delivered over eighty ice cream novelty treats. When speaking with Ms. Baker later that afternoon, she expressed how excited they all were to receive them. One of the veterans even exclaimed, “I haven’t had one of these since I lived at home!” For that veteran, it has been years since he was home. Sometimes

it is just small things that can put a smile on someone’s face. To donate to the Batavia VA Medical Center, drop off items throughout the year to the bartender at the Churchville American Legion, 6444 Buffalo Road, on Thursday or Friday evenings between 6 and 9 p.m. Needed items include: •New clothes; example: polo shirts, sweatpants, sizes from Large to 8XL (please note they are not allowed to accept used clothing). •Personal care items – full size •Gift cards for any amount •Calendars •Twin size warm blankets/quilts •Arts and crafts items, including adult coloring books, colored pencils •Outdoor lawn games for warmer months.
