Sweden considers adoption of a Vacant Building Registry Code Like all communities across New York State, the Town of Sweden has experienced an increase in the number of vacant buildings. Buildings left vacant for an extended period of time may become unsafe, turn into public health nuisances, and be a further detriment to the neighborhood. The Sweden Town Board, with the assistance of the Town Attorney, has drafted a new Town Code

to establish rules for identifying and registering vacant buildings, to set forth the various responsibilities of vacant building title holders and to enhance the rehabilitation of the vacant buildings. When a building becomes vacant, the owner will have 30 days to register the building with the Town building department. Along with the registration, the owner must submit one of the following:

a plan for the demolition of the building, a plan for the securing of the building in accordance with town standards, or a plan for the rehabilitation of the building. If the building is to remain vacant but secured, the Town has developed detailed requirements for the maintenance of the building. The proposed code is available for review at www.townofsweden.org under

legal notices. The Town Board will hold a public hearing on July 28 at 6 p.m. at the Sweden Town Hall, 18 State Street, to hear all comments for or against the proposal. Comments may be submitted in writing prior to the hearing. For those who plan to attend, masks are required and chairs will be marked to ensure social distancing. Provided information

Road resurfacing project in Holley scheduled for 2021 A maintenance resurfacing project for Route 237 in Holley will commence in spring 2021 and be completed in the fall of the same year. The route repair, which is within the Village of Holley, is going

to be coordinated to follow the village’s sidewalk reconstruction and waterline improvements project, which is projected to be completed in 2020.

Two Orleans County bridges re-open The Telegraph Road Bridge, in Murray, and the Bates Road Bridge, in Medina, have both re-opened to vehicular traffic as of Saturday, June 27. The Telegraph Road Bridge has been closed since August 5, 2019, for steel repairs under D263668 – Rehabilitation of 7 Bridges over the Erie Canal in Orleans County. Minor final touches are being

completed by the construction crew, but traffic will be able to flow through. The Bates Road Bridge has been closed since November 8, 2019, also for steel repairs. The bridge will have open traffic flow while the construction crew installs sidewalk grating. Provided information

This project will improve the existing pavement condition through milling and resurfacing Route 237 from the south village line to the Erie Canal Bridge, just north of the village. The project also includes new pavement markings and new signs. In addition, extra signage will be installed to advise truck drivers of the low clearance at the railroad bridge. As part of this project, the pavement markings on Route 237 will be modified from South Holley Road to Geddes Street and from Route 31 to the north village line to provide two 15-foot travel lanes with no provision for parking. The existing pavement markings and on-street parking will remain from Geddes Street to Route 31. This striping change was done in consulta-

tion with local village officials to address safety concerns and to better provide onstreet bicycle accommodations. Route 237 will remain open to traffic during construction with a minimum of one lane of traffic maintained in each direction. Short term daily lane closures will be utilized during paving operations. Drivers will be informed of construction work areas with variable message boards and temporary work zone traffic control signs.
