Over 150 people served at the return of Brockport’s “Souper” Bowl

After a three-year hiatus, co-chairs Andrea Perry and Barb Grady were well-prepared to host Souper Bowl IV on January 21, sponsored by the Sweden Senior Association, Inc. (SSAI). Proceeds benefit the SSAI for senior programming, a high school scholarship, and contributions to local charities.

During the winter season there is nothing like soup, the classic comfort food, that warms you inside and out. Attendees at the Sweden Clarkson Recreation Center enjoyed moving from crockpot to crockpot as volunteers ladled 17 different hot soups prepared by 15 Greater Brockport area restaurants. Yes, some folks even came back for seconds. The following eateries each donated two gallons of their signature soups to sample:

•Brockport Diner, Brockport – Stuffed pepper;

•Eagle Family Restaurant, Sweden – Chicken Florentine;

•58 Main BBQ & Brew, Brockport – Scotch Ale corn beef potato;

•Gallo’s Bar & Grill, Hamlin – Broccoli cheese;

•Grinds 122 Cafe, Brockport/Clarkson – Chicken vegetable & Tomato basil;

•Java Junction, Brockport – Hungarian mushroom;

•Jimmy Z’s Plates & Shakes, Brockport – Italian style

•Lodge on the Canal/Lifetime Assistance, Brockport – Chick-

•Millhouse Family Restaurant, Clarkson – Lemon Chicken

•Piccolo Fazools Bistro, Brockport – Chicken pastini;

•The Farmer’s Table, Hamlin – Baked potato chorizo. Each Souper Bowl IV ticket holder had one vote to choose their favorite soup. The top three winners were: #1 Chicken corn chowder from Lodge on the Canal/Lifetime Assistance; #2 Scotch Ale corn beef potato from 58 Main BBQ and Brew; and #3 Hungarian mushroom from Java Junction.

The SSAI seniors began planning the fundraiser in fall 2022. The 40+ volunteers sell tickets and get soup sponsors from restaurants, farm markets, and businesses. The day of the event, they pick up soup from each restaurant, work in the kitchen, serve the soup, and clean up afterwards. In addition, SSAI members staffed the check-in desk, represented the Dress-a-Girl, Sweden Comfort Quilters, Knitting Club, and the Sweden Senior Singer programs. Home-baked goods, knitted items, and raffle tickets were for sale.

Velletris leading Brockport in multiple categories and on the bench

Brockport’s girls basketball team has had an up and down season featuring a two and three-game losing streak, but a three and four-game winning streak. But that is to be expected when starting an eighth-grader and two freshmen.

But it’s senior Ava Velletri who is leading the squad, playing virtually every minute while leading the points (258), assists (68), steals (50) and, despite not being anywhere near the tallest player on the team at 5’6”, rebounds (166).

And all while her father, Thomas, is on the bench as head coach.

“I love every minute of it; I’ve coached her since she was little with travel, then AAu and now I’m fortunate enough to be able to be her coach in high school,” Thomas Velletri said.

On this particular night – a harder than it should have been victory over winless Batavia – Ava was the only Brockport player in double figures in scoring. She played point guard on offense and down low on defense – a versatile skill set that explains some of the statistical success.

In fact, she is among the top 25 in points in all of Section V and averages over 16 points per game. She also entered the Batavia game third in the entire Section in steals and fourth in rebounds.

“I just try to get the ball and I just want it the most and I try to box out so we can get more offensive time,” Ava said. “Our two quick guards usually guard their two guards and I just try to guard a good rebounder under or scorer just to try to slow them down.”

“She’s not really a point guard, we just don’t have a choice and she’s sacrificed and…she’s done an outstanding job all year taking on that role since most of her career she has played either to two or four,” Thomas said.

Blue Devils junior co-captain Maeve p e ttiti and classmate Mia Tyndell have helped offensively, both scoring more than 100 points this season. Tyndell is also over the century mark in rebounds and leads the team in blocked shots while pettiti is second in steals and third in rebounding.

Brockport’s record after the first five games this season was just 2-3, but they quickly ran off a four-game winning streak to end 2022 before suffering a three-game skid at the start of the 2023 portion of the schedule. Since, they have now won four of their last five games, good momentum with

The Spencerport Rangers wrestling team had a good day at the 2023 Gary Gross Memorial Wrestling Tournament on January 28 in Medina. The team finished second overall. Ryan Cieslinski was the 110 lb. champion and named Light Weight Most Valuable Wrestler. just three games remaining in the regular season before the Section V playoffs begin.

“It’s been up and down for sure; we’ve been in a really good rhythm and I think we’ll pick it up for the end of the season going into sectionals,” Ava said.

And whenever this senior year ends, she will have the memory of her four years on varsity with her dad on the sidelines along with making her first half-court shot to beat the third-quarter buzzer in the Batavia game.

“I wasn’t really looking at the clock until I heard screaming on the countdown and then I realized and looked up and then I just shot it.”

On January 26, Churchville-Chili’s Max became only the second hockey player in Saints history to score 100 career points. 2015 graduate Ryan Cosgrove is the only other Saint to achieve that milestone.

NYSDOT to host public meeting on bridge rehabilitation project in Brockport

Open House set for Thursday, February 9, at the Seymour Library

The New York State Department of Transportation will host a public information meeting on Thursday, February 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. pertaining to an upcoming project to rehabilitate the bridge carrying State Route 19 over the Erie Canal in the Village of Brockport. The informal, openhouse-style meeting will be held at Seymour Library, located at 161 East Avenue, Brockport.

The meeting will feature displays and literature about the project and provide an opportunity for discussion with NYSDOT representatives, who will be available to receive comments and answer individual

Katie Jo Passero joins Hilton CSD as Village Elementary assistant principal

At the December 13 Hilton Board of Education meeting, Katie Jo Passero was appointed as assistant principal for Village Elementary School. She began her new position on January 17. For the past six years, Passero has served as assistant principal and UPK6 assistant principal for the Lyons Central School District. Prior to that, she was a special education teacher at Cosgrove Middle School in Spencerport, a position she held for six years.

Passero has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History/Adolescence Education from Iona University; a Master of Science degree in Adolescent Special Education from Queens College, and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Leadership from SUNY Brockport.

NOCO has promoted Tracey Guarino to senior vice president of information technology with the fullservice energy company. With more than 30 years of IT experience, Guarino has been with NOCO since 2021. She most recently served as vice president of in-

Infamous Incidents program rescheduled in Brockport

Learn about some of the largely unknown tidbits of local history from former Village of Brockport Historian and Director of the Emily L. Knapp Museum, Sue Savard, on Wednesday, February 15, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Main Street in the village. The program, Infamous Incidents, begins at 7 p.m. and is anticipated to last approximately one hour.

Among the Infamous Incidents from the files of the Emily L. Knapp Museum to be discussed are local controversy relating to the Civil War, the

Bank Swindle of 1866, a run on banks in 1893, the fire that consumed the Heinrich Hotel, Brockport’s street of ill repute, a 1949 murder, and Edgar Coapman, Sr., born in 1896 – one of Brockport’s most colorful characters.

All are invited to attend and learn about Brockport history. Some light refreshments will be offered following the presentation.

Admission is free, but donations to the Brockport Food Shelf are welcome.

Tops honors Black History Month with student essay contest

In celebration of Black History Month in February, Tops Friendly Markets is giving students in third through eighth grade an opportunity to honor those in their own lives whom they admire most who are of African American descent – mom, pastor, coach, a big brother, etc.

MC Sheriff on the death of Tyre Nichols

The death of Tyre Nichols is inhumane. The pain his family is feeling will continue to endure for a lifetime.

I am heartbroken for the Nichols family. There was no humanity or compassion shown for this man. Mr. Nichols died a horrible death at the hands of those who took an oath to protect him.

We in law enforcement must be bold enough to call out criminality, even when it occurs in our profession. What happened in Memphis is not consistent with the mission of po-

licing. We can do better. We must do better.

After what our country has been through, some of those in uniform are still willing to continue these deplorable actions. I am disgusted. Those going out to protect our community are disgusted.

Humanity and professionalism is the expectation.

Riga Recreation “WinterFest 2023”

On Sunday, January 29, Riga Recreation held its annual “WinterFest” in partnership with the Churchville Lions Club, and the ChurchvilleChili School District at Churchville Elementary School.

The Lions, once again, sold out (650 orders) their “World Famous” Chicken BBQ and there were carnival games, airbrush tattoos, caricature drawings, a magician, and a bounce house in the gymnasium.

Thanks go out to the following organizations and individuals that made this year’s event a huge success: the Churchville Lions Club for their famous BBQ; Churchville Elementary School’s kitchen and cus-

Celebrate Hope, an interactive open house, demonstrates that every student can learn well Sessions offer insight into educational model for children who learn differently

On Friday, February 17, Hope Hall School is holding a special event, open to parents of current and prospective students, and members of the community in order to share a hands-on experience of the unique educational model used to drive learning success at Hope Hall School.

The school will present two sessions, one from 9 to 11 a.m. and another from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sessions are broken up into 20-minute, hands-on blocks, where visitors can choose between a variety of activities at the elementary, middle or high school level to experience the multi-sensory way students learn actual curriculum. “This is the first time we’re presenting an interactive open house,” explained Sister Diana Dolce, SSJ, Founder and Executive Director of Hope Hall School. “This new hands-on initiative will give parents and guardians of current and prospective students a better understanding of the multi-sensory model we use that works so well for our students. We are also inviting members of the community, pediatricians, and pediatric mental health providers because many people know students who are at academic risk, and who could benefit from our model of education.”

Brockport handbell choirs to ring in 2023, invite new members Ensembles forming will let “non-musicians” make beautiful music

The New Year is literally ringing in the news that two English handbell teams are forming to serve Brockport and the surrounding communities.

These ensembles are independent and will play various secular, pop, and sacred pieces. Practices will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 14 State Street, Brockport. Equipment includes four octaves of handbells and three octaves of handchimes.

Both community handbell teams invite new members. The lower-level team is for beginners with no prior music or bell ringing experience. Participants will be met where they are and taught all they need to know. This team will meet on Mondays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. An upper-level team is forming for those who can count independently and can read some music. Again, no prior bell ringing experience is needed. This advanced ensemble will meet Tuesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. There is some room for adjusting the practice schedule to meet the needs of the members.

Formal rehearsals will commence when the teams have been assembled. A minimum of 10 people are needed on each team, and substitutes are always needed.

Open rehearsals will be held at St. Luke’s on Monday, February 27, 6:30 to 8 p.m., and on Tuesday, February 28, 5 to 6:30 p.m., for those interested in trying out handbells, learning what’s needed to ring in terms of music, and to ask questions about how the bell teams work. Rehearsals will be held on the second floor. Use the side entry of the church on State Street. All are welcome.

Although there are always allowances for important events in team members’ lives, ringers are expected to prioritize rehearsals and team member pre-agreed upon performances in their schedules. If absences are unavoidable or needed, ringers

should let the director know so that alternative rehearsal plans can be made and, if possible, subs can be recruited. Handbells are a group instrument, and too many people absent impacts the ability to function.

Studies have shown that reading music and learning new skills can help with memory retention, social connection, and general feelings of wellbeing. Ringing bells can also be quite a workout, especially at the higher level. Handbells are fun to play and tend to attract people looking for a mental and physical challenge, as well as engage in an unusual group instrument.

Leaders will be following CDC guidelines regarding COVID and associated pandemic viruses, such as influenza. Ringers are expected to cooperate with recommended vaccines and boosters, and if conditions should severely worsen again, with masking.

SUnY brockport professor produces award-winning documentary on dementia

The Fight for Your Life is an award-winning documentary by Virginia Orzel, Professor of Journalism, Broadcasting, and Public Relations (JRB) at SUNY Brockport. The documentary educates the audience on the different forms of dementia such as Lewy Body, Parkinson’s, Frontotemporal, and Alzheimer’s from the perspective of caregivers (often family members), doctors, and patients.

“Dementia is a topic we aren’t talking about. Caregivers are suffering in silence and don’t know what to do,” Orzel said. “The documentary helps caregivers understand the different stages of the disease and where you can go to get help. No one fights alone.”

The film won three Awards of Merit from the Impact DOCS Awards for Featured Documentary, Women Filmmakers, and Health Science and Medical. Orzel and her students also won a Silver Telly Award in the Non Broadcast Low Budget film category.

Orzel conducted most of the interviews in the documentary while broadcasting students Isaac DeLeon and Kyle O’Gara filmed them. She also recruited JRB major Mya Coleman during the editorial process to help create the graphics.

“It is really an honor to win an award with my students,” Orzel said. “I let them know right away when we won the awards that since we were partners on this, they earned the award too.”

The process for creating the nationally recognized documentary was far from easy – resulting in Orzel nearly dropping the project multiple times.

Andrea is survived by her husband of 16 years Mark Pascuzzi; daughter Carly Pascuzzi; step-son Nicolas Pascuzzi; step-daughter Mia Pascuzzi; mother Margaret (Lee Rodamaker) Webb; father James (Cathy Johnson) Webb; sister Holly (Ron) Carroll; brother James D. Webb and sister Taryn (Jay) Coleman, Tammy (Russ) Wood and Debbie (Shawn) Orchard; many nieces and nephews, other extended family members and friends who loved her dearly. Andrea dedicated her entire career in education to helping the less fortunate, especially children with special needs. Andrea had spent almost 20 years with the Spencerport School District, first as Coordinator of Special Education, and for the past 4 + years as Director of Special Education. In addition to leading the Special Education Department, she was the district co-coordinator of the Trauma Illness Grief (TIG) team and served on the District Equity and Wellness Committees. She led the 6:1:1 program, collaborated to create the 8:1:1 program at Munn, initiated the integrated co-teaching model (ICT) for grades K through 8, and initiated the Transitional program at the high school. She took great pride in connecting with students and their families and made a lasting, positive impact on everyone she came in contact with. She knew every student in her department and created a connection with them. She put in time, effort and energy with every student and their families, and they always knew they had an advocate in her.

Her Funeral Service was held February 4 at the Spiritus Christi Church, Rochester. Donations can be sent to The School of Holy Childhood in memory of Andrea Pascuzzi.

•Hillman, Gloria V., died January 25, 2023 at age 93, reunited at last with her beloved late husband, Frank. She is survived by her children Gail (James) Adams, Mark (Diane) Hillman and Wayne Hillman; grandchildren Christopher (Amber) Adams, Sara (Robert) Cornish and Aubrey Hillman; great-grandchildren Ryan and Evelyn Adams; sisters-in-law Rose Marie Budnick, Shirley Blab and Joan Hillman; brotherin-law George Hillman; and a large extended family. Also preceded in death by her beloved brother Louis Budnick, Jr. and numerous sisters- and brothers-in-law. Gloria and Frank raised their family in West Seneca before moving to Brockport in 1968. Family was the very center of Gloria’s world and nothing made her happier than a gathering of loved ones. There were always beautiful roses in her garden and something wonderful cooking in the kitchen.

Born Wlodzimierz Stek in Poland, he was one of seven children. Wlodzimierz had a good childhood until the atrocities of the invasion, September 17, 1939 and he was subject to flee and the family was separated when he was only 14, never to see his mother, father and siblings again. In 1942, he was captured by the SS and was in forced labor camp until he was rescued by the American Army and then was appointed US Army guard until his honorable discharge on March 22, 1951. He then proceeded with his immigration to the USA and changed his name to Walter and began his life in America.

With the help of her students, Orzel shot most of the footage she would need for the documentary by the start of 2020. The last major piece of the documentary left to film involved entering local nursing homes to film groundbreaking technology in use. Days after attending the Dr. Lemuel and Gloria Rogers Health Symposium to gather more information on dementia from experts in the field, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the country into shutdown.

Orzel decided to put the documentary on hold until she received clearance to film inside nursing homes – clearance she never received.

“I never filmed this portion of the project due to the protocols in nursing homes. By October, I had to ask myself if I could move forward without it,” said Orzel.

Then she got creative. She began searching online for videos using sound technology involving patients with dementia and asked the creators for their permission to use their videos. She also asked members of the community she had met earlier in the project to help film using their cellphone and send the footage to her.

“The footage was noticeably different from what we filmed and I had to ask myself ‘am I sacrificing quality using this type of footage?’” Orzel said. “I wanted to, and decided to, quit multiple times during this process, but the next day I would wake up and force myself to move forward and I’m really glad I did.”

The documentary was picked up within a week of sending it to distributors. A month later, she won her first Silver Telly. Three months later, she earned three prestigious awards of merit from The Impact DOCS Awards Competition. Provided information and photo

•Pfenninger, Juanita, died suddenly January 26, 2023 at age 57. She was predeceased by her father, Andrew Gibson; her husband, Dale Pfenninger; her step-son, Joshua Lowery; and her brother, Robert Drake. She is survived by her mother, Penny Gibson; her loving companion, Jim Lowery; her children, Joe (Julie) Pfenninger, Rochelle Pfenninger (Stephen Pattison), Brandy Lowery (Kristopher Jackson), and Mark (Melissa) Lowery; her daughter-in-law, Maila Lowery; her grandchildren, Eloise, Adalyn, Michael, Sally, Eva, James, Violet and Kurtis; her sister, Ann Bartel; many nieces and nephews; and her best friend, Marial Ophardt. Juanita was employed by L3 Harris. She loved horses, especially her horse, “Apollo”, and loved being at the barn. She enjoyed gardening, reading books, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

•Weber, Beate Anna “Bebe,” died January 29, 2023 at age 90. She was predeceased by her parents, Albert Weber and Beata Anna Manger Weber of Germany. She is survived by her sister, Nadia; her brother, Egon; her nieces and nephews in Germany; her extended American family, the Lemckes / Mallabers of Hilton; and her many other friends both two and four legged. Bebe moved to America in 1963 and settled in New York City. She was a governess, or nanny, for a family in New Jersey. In 1967, at age 34, she was hired as a dog trainer for police dogs in Hilton. She worked for K-9 Training for 32 years. She was quickly befriended by Joan Mallaber Lemcke, and her family. They became Bebe’s extended family and were friends for over 60 years. In the mid 1990’s she moved behind Manitou Hill Farms where the Lemcke horse farm is located. There she continued her friendship, sharing in life’s adventures, and she was able to continue her love for dogs and horses.

Interment and a “get together” will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family and friends. In his leisure, he enjoyed traveling to Mt. Kilimanjaro and Birmingham, England.

The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor is inviting New Yorkers to take part in a special winter fitness challenge, the “FEBRUARY 15 Canalway Challenge.” Participants pledge to complete 15 miles by walking, running, hiking, snowshoeing, or crosscountry skiing during the month of February to earn

a 15-mile badge. Participants can choose to log miles at national, state and local parks, on the Canalway Trail, or even in their own neighborhoods. Any location within the boundaries of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor counts.

“We hope the FEBRUARY 15 Challenge will provide an incentive for people of all abilities to get up, get out, and get active to achieve their own fitness goals,” said Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. “Getting out this winter is an excellent way to explore the Canalway Corridor’s seasonal beauty and start a fitness habit that can last all year.”

Hundreds of thousands of blue envelopes recently arrived in mailboxes across the region asking for “just one” dollar to help kids and adults with special needs. By asking everyone to take part, each dollar works together – with each Al Sigl Member Agency – to create opportunities for everyone to be included in community life. Many JustOne donations include thank-you notes expressing appreciation for being asked to give an amount that lets everyone get involved or remembering the help a friend or family member received. One note read, “I’m sending three dollars - one for me and one each in memory of my Mom and Dad, who always sent their dollars. Thanks for all you do!” And another read, “I am also a person with a disability, and I know my two dollars is not much, but if it can help someone, that makes my heart smile.”

Winter gardening fun for kids

February/mid-winter break is just ahead for local school districts and if you are thinking about things to do to keep everyone occupied, consider gardening. Even in the middle of winter, there are many horticulture-related projects that are both educational and fun.

You probably have leftover seeds from last year’s growing season. Use them to teach children about germination. Line a lidded glass jar with a damp paper towel. Put seeds such as squash or beans between the glass and the towel. Add small amounts of moisture if needed and watch the jar each day. Seeds should sprout in just a matter of days. You can also use a recycled foil pan and a plastic bag to create a mini greenhouse. Place a damp paper towel in the bottom of the pan and place seeds on top. Good choices include cucumbers or beans, such as scarlet runner beans. Place the tray in a plastic bag and have your children make predictions about which seeds they think will sprout first.

Once seeds have germinated, you can talk about how seeds have different germination periods and how the plants begin to grow from seed.

Let them take care of houseplants. If your plants need dusting or misting or re-potting, plan to tackle those jobs over the break with the help of little hands.

If you have spider plants or succulents, pot up baby plants. Take children to a local garden center and let them pick out an easy care houseplant they can tend. If the plant does not survive, see if they can figure out why – plants need light, air, nutrients, water and soil to thrive.

There are many ways to keep kids busy with gardening related activities during winter break.

Try germinating seeds in a jar or purchase houseplants they can grow themselves.

Get ready for growing outside by making garden markers with terra cotta pots, popsicle sticks or smooth, flat rocks. Children can paint these items with bright colors, placing plant names on each. Start by painting the item with a layer of acrylic paint. When dried, paint the name in a contrasting color. Embellish the item with patterns and borders, if desired. Once paint is dried, apply a coat of varnish or other sealant to protect it from the elements.

Involve your children or grandchildren in planning for the upcoming growing season. Study garden catalogs and let them decide on varieties of vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers to grow. Have them consider growing conditions and what varieties will grow best in your yard. They can map out a garden plan or brainstorm a theme garden for 2023.

Other indoor gardening ideas include making a windowsill herb garden, terrarium, or purchase air plants and think of creative ways to display them while learning about epiphytes – plants that get their moisture and nutrients from the air while clinging to trees or rocks for support.

Get outside. Hold a scavenger hunt for buds on trees, shrubs and perennials. Look for bird nests from last year in trees that have lost their leaves for the winter. Make a simple bird feeder by cutting a bagel in half and spreading it with peanut butter or cooking fat. Dredge the bagel in black oil sunflower seeds and hang it in your yard where you can watch the birds that visit from a window.

Rural Housing Coalition shares mobile home community preservation guide

When you live in a mobile home community, you may own your home, but not the land underneath it.

In New York State and across the country, mobile home communities are threatened by real estate speculators who buy the land and raise the rents and fees, often while cutting services. This drives out residents, and clears the land for redevelopment.

The Rural Housing Coalition has produced a Mobile Home Community Preservation Manual that shows how residents can keep their mobile home communities through cooperative or non-profit purchase of the mobile home park from private owners.

The manual also lists state programs that can help replace dilapidated mobile homes and improve park infrastructure. In addition, the manual reviews the relevant sections of the Tenant Protection Act for mobile home community residents.

“Mobile home communities, which provide important affordable housing options in rural New York State, are disappearing at an alarming rate,” said Mike Borges, Executive Director of the Rural Housing Coalition of New York. “There were 1,800 mobile home parks in New York State in 2019, but according to mandatory registrations, there were only 1,200 in 2022.”

The Coalition has also produced a brochure that can be mailed or handed to mobile home community residents to let them know about their options. The guide and the brochure can be found on the Library page of the Coalition’s website at www.ruralhousing.org.

The materials were funded by a grant from Enterprise Community Partners, a national nonprofit that exists to make a good home possible for the millions of families without one. They were produced with assistance from PathStone, a

nonprofit that builds family and individual self-sufficiency by strengthening farmworker, rural and urban communities.

“The state needs to do more to preserve these affordable housing options in rural communities, such as creating a program to finance the transfer of development rights of these properties similar to efforts to preserve open space and farmland,” said Borges. “Preserving the affordable housing we currently have should be a top priority for state policymakers.”

The Rural Housing Coalition of New York is a statewide organization dedicated to revitalizing rural New York by strengthening housing and community development providers. The coalition supports rural housing and community development providers through organizational capacity development, training and technical assistance, and raising public awareness and advocacy.

Beware of credit and debit card skimming scams

The Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection is warning New Yorkers of credit and debit card skimming scams where thieves place “skimming” devices at ATMs, gas station pumps and other unattended payment terminals to steal card information. Scammers place these hidden devices over or inside card reading machines at legitimate retailers to directly copy card and PIN information, and then use the stolen data to withdraw funds, make illicit purchases or commit other forms of fraud. According to the FBI, it is estimated that skimming costs financial institutions and consumers more than $1 billion each year.

“Countless New Yorkers use credit cards and debit cards for everyday purchases, and they should not have to worry about unscrupulous individuals stealing their information or their hard-earned money,” said New York Secretary of State Robert Rodriguez, who oversees the Division of Consumer Protection. “I urge all New Yorkers to stay informed and pay close attention for signs of tampering when using an ATM, gas station pump or other card reading machine to help protect themselves against these scams.”

“According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, skimming costs financial institutions and consumers more than $1 billion each year,” said Acting New York State Police Superintendent Steven A. Nigrelli. “While our highly trained investigators and specialized units deploy sophisticated techniques to catch these criminals and stop them from defrauding New Yorkers, it’s important for consumers to be aware of their surroundings and the steps they can take to protect themselves. I urge all New Yorkers to be vigilant in taking precautions to safeguard their identities.”

Tips on how to help spot a potential skimming scam:

•Inspect the card reading machine for an overlay device. Check for unusual set-ups including abnormal bulkiness, any residues, different color, material or shape. Check to see if it’s loose around the card reader. If it moves, consider using another machine.

•Check the keypad. Thieves may place a phony keypad overlay to store keystrokes. If the buttons look or feel different, don’t use it.

•Choose your ATM location wisely. Machines located inside banks or indoor locations are much more secure than an ATM located on the street where anyone can access it.

•Look for any hidden cameras. Thieves often place cameras near the vicinity in order to record PIN numbers. The camera may be mounted at the top or in the ceiling of a terminal. Protect yourself by shielding the PIN pad when entering a PIN number. Use your hand and/or body to cover your PIN when you type it in.

•Review your bank and credit card statements regularly. Victims are often unaware of fraudulent charges or activities until the next attempted purchase or account review. It’s important to frequently monitor your accounts for unauthorized charges.

Damar Hamlin launches

#3forHeart CPR Challenge

When seconds matter most, Cpr means the difference between life and death, a fact that Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin personally understands. unfortunately, most people who have a cardiac arrest aren’t surrounded by people trained in Cpr like Hamlin was when he collapsed during a televised Monday night game in early January. That is why Hamlin is launching his #3forHeart Cpr Challenge aimed at saving more lives through Cpr education and training with the American Heart Association.

Hamlin hopes to use his experience to educate people about importance of Cpr and inspire them to learn Hands-Only Cpr – a quick, easy to learn lifesaving skill.

Cpr – or cardiopulmonary resuscitation – is performed when the heart stops beating and, especially if started immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. people are encouraged to participate in all three steps to learn and promote education of Hands-Only Cpr

Hands-Only Cpr is a skill everyone can learn. It is as simple as, calling 911 if you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse; and then pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest.
