In the entrance at Hope Hall School is a sign that reads, “Welcome to Hope Hall, A School of Our Own.” In 1994, Sister Diana Dolce, S.S.J. established Hope Hall School based on what she learned during 25 years teaching children at parochial schools. “I have always had a passion for working with children who are struggling with learning. We realize that all children learn differently, and that all learning starts first in the senses,” Sister Diana said. Sister Diana developed the Dolce Method for Learning Mastery©. Her method teaches the full New York State curriculum, as well as organizational skills and social skills, all in a non-traditional way. “Our school teaching strategy is designed to meet the needs of children who have experienced frustration and failure in a classroom setting. We know that the rate of learning differs in all children. Those with a low rate of learning tend to have processing challenges. When kids are told, and feel, that they are different, they will believe the worst about themselves. They think that something is wrong with them,” Sister Diana said.

Successful learning at Hope Hall School

The goal for students is to be successful, life-long learners. The school provides a small classroom setting of eight to 12 students in elementary grades, and 10 to 15 students in high school. Curriculum is focused on basic skills in language arts, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Math, social studies, science, art, music and physical education are all presented in an environment conducive to learning. With flexible teaching styles, all the senses are used in the learning process where students develop higher-level thinking skills. The teaching staff at Hope Hall has a passion for working with kids. “Our teachers are extremely dedicated. They are here because they believe in the mission. They go through extensive training in the Dolce Method and have the ability to combine the content with the learning needs of each individual student,” Sister Diana said. The school encourages the parents to become involved with the school in the Parents as Partners program. “We help heal any bruises that parents may be harboring, easing the homework as a battleground issue. We encourage parents to visit the school, take a tour and ask the questions,” she said. page

The Dolce Method focuses on developing the mind, body and spirit. Concepts •Achieveinclude: academic success at Hope Hall and •Becomebeyondlifelong learners •Develop a sense of pride in, and respect for themselves, their own body, as well as for all •Adoptlifehealthy lifestyles that include good nutrition and physical fitness •Recognize and use non-violent ways of interacting with others •Foster a personal sense of spirituality •Revere diversity and appreciate the uniqueness and goodness of each person •Be good citizens and stewards of the EarthStudents at Hope Hall School experience a review and reinforce style of teaching. Lessons are presented in a multi-sensory way. Every-other-day individual student progress is assessed and teachers make sure the kids learn, and retain, what is being taught. “Because kids are successful they are willing to take more risks. Success leads to more successes. We create a stable environment where everybody matters, we respect who they are. Every student has an advocate,” Sister Diana said.

That freshwater has served as an important economic engine throughout the state’s history, however, that relationship has left an unfortunate environmental legacy. The task force will examine ways to revitalize watershed communities both economically and environmentally.

Updates from Harvey C. Noone August 13, the smell of roasted chicken barbecue permeated through Churchville on Buffalo Road at the American Legion. The Legion family in conjunction with the Churchville Lions Club sold over 640 day. There was a bouncy house on the grounds for children to enjoy. The Legion also opened their outside deck and new upstairs bar to provide cool shade, cold drinks, and a place to listen to music. The Lions got up early and started their roasters, the Legion family fell in with them, and the hard work and fun began. By 4 p.m., bellies were filled, thirsts quenched, and merriment was had. The Legion and the Lions split the proceeds, enabling them to continue their respective support to the veterans designed to teach young men about local and statewide government, leadership, discipline, and teamwork. Jarrett fascinated the Legion family with stories from his experience attending Boys State at SUNY Morrisville. Some of his exploits concerned his run for sheriff, the food, the Marines (counselors), and his friendships with youth from the New York City area. His mother, Joy, a former Churchville Auxiliary representative to Girls State, was on hand and baked chocolate chip cookies for all to enjoy during Jarrett’s presentation. AJ Wilson and Nicholas Wetzel were the other two student leaders who represented the Legion at Boys State. They all received Boys State medals and certificates at the School Awards night at Churchville. Next up at the Legion is a Flu Shot Clinic on September 13, which is free and open to the public at the Legion, 6444 Buffalo Road, Churchville, from 3 to 6 p.m. Also, Euchre is back on this fall. The game is on Thursday, September 15 (moved from Fridays), starting at 6:30 p.m. Arrive at 6 p.m. to secure a seat. Provided information and photos

Yes, people certainly do still square dance. The Western New York Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs is a regional organization of 20 dance clubs in the Rochester area as well as parts of the Buffalo and Finger Lakes Region (www.squaredancingrochester.org). Modern square dance is a great way to exercise to music. The music used nowadays ranges from traditional to Broadway hits to George Strait, Elton John, and Justin Bieber. A square is a “team” of eight dancers working together to executive a series of dance moves given by a square dance “caller” to music. Not only does one get exercise, there is also the opportunity to make new friends and special connections. Every dance lesson is a party. There are square dance clubs, festivals, and camping groups nationwide. There are also square dance cruises and a National Square Dance Convention held every year in a different city. Cloverleaf Squares will be hosting a free open house dance party on Sunday, September 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Chili, 3182 Chili Avenue. Singles (no partner needed) and couples are welcome. No previous dance experience of any kind is necessary. No special clothing is necessary. Come on out and join a friendly group of people for a free, fun, and enjoyable evening. Genesee County 4-H members compete at Dairy Judging Contest

Genesee County 4-H members Bing Zuber, Tate Zuber, and Annalise Sybertz competed at the 4-H Dairy Judging Contest at the New York State Fair on August 26. Their team placed third in the Junior Division of the contest. Individually, Annalise also placed in the top ten juniors. Dairy Judging contests teach youth to critically evaluate dairy animals based on breed standards and gain an understanding of how form affects function. Youth participating in these competitions learn anatomy and physiology of the dairy animal and gain capability in choosing the proper animal to take in the show ring or keep for breeding on farm. They also learn confidence and public speaking skills while defending the reasoning for their placements to the judges.

Please remember to stop until the red lights on the school bus are turned off and never pass on the right side of the bus (where children enter and exit). Please be patient and use caution to ensure safety for all.

Bergen and Sweden work to bring public water to more residents

The Towns of Bergen and Sweden approved an intermunicipal agreement on August 23 at their respective Town Board meetings that enables Sweden properties at the west end of Reed Road to tie into Bergen’s new water district. The mutually beneficial agreement allows Sweden property owners to become out-of-district users at the same cost as Bergen property owners, who in turn benefit from having more users pay towards the long-term debt service on the project. The agreement had to clear hurdles with several agencies before being adopted. Eligible Sweden property owners have been mailed an application and have until September 23 to file it with the Town of Bergen. After that date, there will be a fee as well as the annual debt service payments. The debt service for Sweden property owners will be collected on the Town of Sweden tax bill and remitted to the Town of Bergen annually. Sweden has a similar arrangement with the Town of Clarendon for out-of-district water users on County Line ProvidedRoad.information

The homecoming festivities will conclude with the varsity football game against Greece Athena, which kicks off at 7 p.m. in the Dahn Walrath Stadium. Admission is $1 for students and $2 for adults. Middle school students, or younger, must have parental supervision for the entire event. Parking for the homecoming events will be available throughout the village and on the District campus. Plan to arrive and park early, as the main campus road will close at approximately 5 p.m. and will reopen following the parade. Attendees are encouraged to wear blue and white to show school pride. Those with questions may contact class advisor Shannon Howlett at 585-6371870 or Shannon.howlett@bcs1.org . Provided information and photo

Community members are invited to join Brockport Central School District for its annual homecoming celebrations during the week of September 19. Each school will participate in a variety of events leading up to homecoming, including pep rallies and themed days throughout the week. On Wednesday, September 21, the District will host its traditional Girls of the Gridiron at 6 p.m. at the Dahn Walrath Stadium. Admission is $3 per person or three canned food items to benefit the new school food pantry and the BHS Student Council.Celebrations will continue on Friday, September 23, with food trucks set up in the Brockport High School’s front loop from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The homecoming parade begins at 5:15 p.m., where it will make its way from Oliver Middle School to the Stadium. Each high school class will decorate a float according to this year’s Disney theme. A multitude of bands, clubs, sports teams, alumni, and other community groups will also march in the parade. If you would like to enter a float or become a parade sponsor, fill out a form posted on the District website at www.bcs1.org .

To inform its decision, the board hosted one in-person public hearing in 2020 and eight virtual public hearings between 2020 and 2022 where testimony on the matter was heard from farm laborers, agricultural employers, academic experts, and elected officials, among others. Four virtual informational meetings were also held during this time.

The New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) announced that the next meeting of the Farm Laborers Wage Board will be held virtually at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 6. The board is expected to deliver its report and final recommendations to NYSDOL Commissioner Roberta Reardon on the proposal to reduce the overtime threshold for farm workers from 60 hours to 40 hours a week. A link to the meeting livestream will be made available on the Farm Laborers Wage Board webpage, https://dol. ny.gov/farm-laborers-wage-board.“IthanktheFarmLaborersWage Board for thoroughly examining this complex issue and for their service to New York State,” said New York State Department of Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon. “I’m also grateful for the many New Yorkers who provided input on this statewide discussion, which will be vital as we evaluate the state’s agricultural future. I look forward to reviewing the board’s report and recommendations before announcing my decision.”Under the Farm Laborers Fair Labor Practices Act of 2019, farm laborers became entitled to overtime premium pay starting on January 1, 2020, for any work that they perform in excess of 60 hours per week, and for work performed on their designated day of rest. As required by the act, New York State Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon convened a wage board comprised of the members in 2020. Board members include Brenda McDuffie, former President and CEO of the Buffalo Urban League, David Fisher, New York Farm Bureau President, and Denis Hughes, former President of the New York State AFL-CIO.

Per the statute, the wage board was tasked with considering and making recommendations regarding the extent to which the overtime threshold for farm laborers can be lowered below 60 hours per week and whether any such reductions should be phased-in through a series of successively lower thresholds.

On January 28, 2022, the Farm Laborers Wage Board passed three resolutions that made the following recom•Reducingmendations:the overtime threshold for farm laborers from 60 hours to 40 hours a week;

•The phase-in schedule would begin on January 1, 2024, with the threshold set at 56 hours; on January 1, 2026, with the threshold set at 52 hours; on January 1, 2028, with the threshold set at 48 hours; on January 1, 2030, with the threshold set at 44 hours; on January 1, 2032, with the threshold set at 40 hours. Once the board delivers its report, Commissioner Reardon will have 45 days to review it and announce her decision. Within five days of receipt, DOL will publish notice in at least 10 newspapers of general circulation in the state. Any objections to the report and recommendations can be sent to the Commissioner within 15 days after such publication. Should the recommendations within the report be adopted, the Department will undergo a rule making process during which there will be a 60-day public commentMoreperiod.information on the Farm Laborers Wage Board process and next steps can be found at https://dol.ny.gov/ farm-laborers-wage-board. information

Late summer and early autumn are upon us - truly a golden time of the year. It’s a busy time for gardeners and growers as it is harvest time for many crops. This is a great time of year to keep growing vegetables and flowers and prepare for next year’s growing season. As long as they are healthy and producing, keep your vegetables, cut flowers, and herbs in place until after the first frost. Annuals and plant debris can be removed after they have been killed by the cold. If you see signs of disease or if a crop has been completely harvested, then remove spent plant material, disposing of diseased plants in the garbage. If plant material is healthy at the time of removal or frost, you can place it with your compost. Perennials that provide habitat and food for wildlife and offer interest in the garden throughout the winter can be left in place and not cut back. Goldfinches stay north all winter and love the seed heads of coneflowers. Stubs and ground covers also provide protection for birds. Beneficial insects find shelter from predators in the cover of overwintering perennials.

As you finish harvesting your garden vegetable crops, you might want to consider a cover crop, especially for garden areas that are finished earlier in the season. Cover crops act as a living mulch that protects your garden soil from erosion, compaction, and weeds. Penn State Extension notes that cover crops retain nutrients in the soil, and some provide pest and disease control. Sow cover crops before the end of September; if you need to wait until October, try winter rye. Penn State says winter rye, barley, oats, and winter wheat add organic material and improve soil structure. Alfalfa, crimson clover, and hairy vetch are legumes that help fix nitrogen in the soil. Leave the cover crops until spring. When you are ready to plant vegetables, cut, mow or pull your cover crop and incorporate it into the soil where the plants will act as a ‘greenAnothermanure.’usefor empty vegetable garden space is heeling in plants in nursery pots that you have not had time to properly plant in their permanent location. Dig holes and heel the plants in. Give them extra protection from harsh winds and cold with extra mulch – such as three to five inches of straw – and burlap windbreaks or enclosures. If you have evergreens, especially broadleaf evergreens, spray the leaves with an antidesiccant. This prevents moisture loss in cold weather. When the ground is frozen, evergreens cannot replace the moisture lost through their leaves and can die. Save those leaves – they can be shredded up with a lawn mower and placed in the garden or added to the compost pile.

Leaves are brown material that is vitally important for healthy compost and often If you have time, don’t stop planting. Fall is great for planting container-grown plants and spring flowering bulbs. Mulch shrubs and perennials well to protect them from heaving out of the ground during the freezes and thaws of winter. Garlic is planted in October because it needs a period of cold to induce bulbing. Garlic likes a soil pH between 6.2 and 7.0. Space cloves four to six inches apart and three to four inches deep with the root side down. Give them a thick cover of straw or other mulch. Continue to weed. Crops that you continue to harvest will benefit from the lack of competition for sunlight, water, and nutrients as the days grow shorter and cooler. Additionally, weeds left in the garden will go to seed and leave you with hundreds of new weed plants next year.
