Year of the Hyacinth If you are celebrating Easter this weekend, you might have purchased a blooming hyacinth potted up for the holiday. The National Garden Bureau has designated 2021 the Year of the Hyacinth, making this a great time to celebrate and enjoy this beautiful and beautifully scented springblooming bulb.

According to the National Garden Bureau, hyacinths were first cultivated over 400 years ago and by the 18th century had become the most popular spring bulbs in the world. Remarkably, at that time, there were 2,000 named cultivars offered by Dutch growers. Today there are less than 50 cultivars in commercial production, but hyacinths continue to be a favorite part of spring bulb displays and early spring decor.

Hyacinths are native to Turkey, Syria, and other parts of the eastern Mediterranean, and today’s hyacinths are hybrids of a single species (Hyacinthus orientalis).

The show-stopping flowers of today, which come in a wide range of vivid colors - from royal blue, to violet-blue, to burgundy, white, peach, and more - do not look much like the original species, which have single florets widely spaced along the stem. In addition to stunning colors, today’s hyacinths have taller flower spikes with large, mostly double florets tightly packed along the stem.

Like other spring-blooming bulbs, hyacinths are planted in autumn before the ground freezes. The National Garden Bureau suggests that they be planted near a doorway, at the front of a garden border, or along a garden path where their fragrance can be easily enjoyed. They do best in full sun and in well-drained soil that does not get soggy. Plant them in groups of five or more, buried four to five inches deep.

best the first spring after planting. To help promote another season or two of beautiful bloom, cut the flower stalks after the blossoms fade and let the foliage grow and naturally die back by early summer.

Hyacinth bulbs contain oxalic acid, which the National Garden Bureau points out is unappealing to chipmunks, voles, and deer. The blooms do well as a cut flower, so consider planting some in your vegetable garden to harvest for springtime cut-floral displays. The bulbs can cause mild skin irritation; wear gloves when planting or handling the bulbs and wash your hands afterward.

Bulbs can also be forced to bloom indoors during the late winter. Pot up bulbs in containers about six inches deep with drainage holes. Use a moist growing mix and plant bulbs two inches apart with the top of the bulb about one inch below the surface. After watering lightly, chill the bulbs for at least ten weeks in temperatures of 40 to 45 degrees. An unheated garage is good, as long as bulbs do not freeze. You can place them in a refrigerator as long as it does not contain ripening fruit, which the National Garden Bureau says can damage the bulbs. After chilling, move them to a sunny window, where they will grow and bloom.

Many people ask if it is possible to plant forced bulbs outside to bloom in the following springs. According to Ask Extension, yes, you can plant the bulbs outside, but realize future blooms will not be optimal as the forcing process takes a lot of energy out of the bulb. For best results, remove spent flowers and let the bulbs go naturally dormant in their pots through the spring and summer. Do not remove foliage.

A year-long wait is finally over for residents of assisted living communities The patience of thousands of New York seniors and their families has finally been rewarded with relaxed visitation and communal activities now being authorized by the New York State Department of Health, the regulating agency.

The Department of Health’s new guidelines, issued on March 25, have essentially opened the doors again for over 50,000 residents who call an assisted living community their home. This long-awaited guidance is based on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMC) guidelines and allows for visitation more widely and for residents to go on outings without the burden of having to quarantine for 14 days upon return.

“Assisted living residents, family members, providers, and staff have been through an extraordinarily difficult year. For providers, keeping COVID-19 out of buildings has been the core focus, but the human and emotional costs cannot be overstated,” said Lisa Newcomb, Executive Director, Empire State Association of Assisted Living. “The

new guidance will allow more frequent and meaningful interactions between residents and their loved ones.”

Newcomb makes note of some particularly significant changes that the new guidance makes, including that visitation and other activities will no longer need to be shut down for 14 days for all residents if there is a new positive resident or staff case. In addition, standards for group activities and communal dining have been relaxed. These changes mean that residents will be able to enjoy time with their fellow residents and enjoy all the amenities and activities provided by their assisted living community.

“The vaccine is the game changer. The overwhelming majority of our residents are fully vaccinated. Due to the pronounced efficacy of the vaccines in preventing COVID-19, the NYS Department of Health has given residents and providers the muchneeded green light to re-open their doors and provide for a more active lifestyle for the seniors in our care,” added Newcomb.

Mentoring Matters Conference to be held virtually on April 16 The mentoring movement is facing unprecedented challenges during the changing landscape of a global pandemic and deepening divides rooted in racial inequity. MENTOR New York, a leader in the statewide mentoring movement, will convene New York’s youth development and mentoring professionals virtually for the 18th Annual Mentoring Matters Conference on Friday, April 16, to address increasing racial equity and creating spaces of joy for young people.

In Syracuse and Rochester, the Hillside Work-Scholarship Program, which works with both areas’ school districts, will gain new tools and techniques to learn, reflect, reassess, and redirect their work with young people in ways that ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion are the driving force.

The conference is open to the public and is ideally suited for youth development professionals and mentors.

“As we have seen in the past ten months, it is no longer enough to state your organization’s commitment to increasing racial equity,” said Brenda Jimenez, CEO of MENTOR New York. “Now is the time for courageous action. We need to come together as a movement and take definitive and collective action creating anti-racist spaces. This is hard work that no one can do on their own, which is why MENTOR New York has partnered with Adelphi University, Niagara University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs, and the Rose Bente Lee Ostapenko Center for Race, Equity, and Mission.”

“This conference will address the dimen-

sions of mentoring for diverse populations in educational spaces, a topic of great interest to mentoring leaders, school supervisors, and those interested in starting mentoring programs or serving as mentors,” said Chotsani Williams West, Executive Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Adelphi.

Over 400 experts, organization leaders, and educators are expected to attend the conference virtually to engage in interactive workshops providing concrete skills and new knowledge that lead to direct action.

Large-group sessions, including the keynote and plenaries, will tackle large-scale challenges from multiple perspectives and provoke new ways to think about the work that professionals are doing with young people.

The conference will include expert presenters and panelists immersed in diversity, equity, and inclusion and the mentoring movement MENTOR New York partners with adults who want to make a difference in the lives of young people and elevate their voices. By providing them with cutting-edge tools and resources, MENTOR New York is fueling mentoring relationships and fostering mentoring cultures that will give young people the confidence to take on tomorrow’s leadership roles or even develop their own.
