Spencerport’s lift bridge closing for two weeks The Route 259 (Union Street) Lift Bridge over the Erie Canal in Spencerport will temporarily close to vehicular traffic for approximately two weeks, beginning April 8, to perform final lifting tests and fully commission the bridge. While the bridge re-opened in November 2020 following a long-term closure, this work will effectively complete the rehabilitation of the Route 259 Lift Bridge, which began in 2019. A posted detour will be in place during the bridge closure, guiding motorists using Route 104 (West Ridge Road), Route 261 (Manitou Road), and Route 31. Pedestrian traffic can use the nearby Martha Street canal bridge crossing. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. Convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license. Churchville-Chili Middle School artists share who they are “Behind the Mask” Eighth-graders at Churchville-Chili Middle School, like the rest of us, have found that the most challenging thing about wearing a safety mask is that it can hide their smiles and conceal their moods and personality. They’ve tackled this problem by creating expressive self-portraits that reveal the distinctly individual personalities “behind the mask.” “This project embraces where we are in this difficult time,” said art teacher Charmagne Dodd. “Students use their artwork to celebrate the positive attributes of who they are, employing graphic cues that reflect their interests and noting expression in their eyes.” The project, which originated with an art teacher in Tennessee and spread across the country via YouTube, uses drawing on folded paper to create two views of the artist: one wearing a mask, and one showing who is behind the mask. Churchville-Chili students employed colored pencils in a humorous cartoon style, adding patterns, color, hairstyles, and imagery to define their character. As the art opens up, they are revealed, with full expressions and words like “Funny,” “Kind,” “Generous,” and “Creative.”

Using folded paper, young artists were able to show aspects of their personality that have been hidden “Behind the Mask.” Art by Churchville-Chili eighth-grader Violet Everhart. Provided information and photos

St. George’s Church hosting electronics recycling event St. George’s Episcopal Church in Hilton will host its 11th annual eScrap for Camp recycling event on Saturday, April 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Community members may drop-off electronics for recycling by Sunnking in the church parking lot, 635 Old Wilder Road, Hilton (across for Kelly’s Apple Farm). Computer equipment, mobile devices, office equipment, cable and entertainment devices, and other electronic devices are accepted for recycling free of charge. No refrigerators or other devices containing freon or gasoline powered equipment can be accepted. For every ton of recyclable materials collected, Sunnking will make a donation to Camp Good Days and Special Times, making this event a great way to start spring cleaning and help children with cancer at the same time.
