The Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce announced its 2015 award winners to be honored at the Annual Awards Dinner on Friday, January 29 at the Plantation Party House, 1875 North Union Street, Spencerport. Casual networking and social time will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a buffet dinner at 7 p.m.

Harry Ewell will receive the 2015 Clyde W. Carter Citizen of the Year Award. Harry Ewell has served on the Town of Ogden Conservation Board for over 25 years. He was President of the Friends of the Ogden Farmers’ Library for five years and President of the Spencerport Kiwanis Club for three years.

An active Kiwanis member, he can be found at Kiwanis service club events including the annual Ogden Parks and Recreation Easter egg hunt, Canal Days hot dog stand, October pasta dinner, and most recently the newly established, and successful, Pineway Ponds 5K Race.

Harry Ewell has owned Afrikamba, Curios in Spencer’s Landing for over 20 years, and volunteers as the U.S. Financial Representative for the East African Wildlife Society, Nairobi, Kenya.

Ron Hartfiel, Sr., owner of Hartfiel’s hometown Garage, 164 Lyell Avenue, Spencerport, will receive the 2015 Business Person of the Year Award.

Established by Ronald (Ron) Hartfiel, Sr. in 2005/06, working with son, Ron Hartfiel, Jr., truly makes this a family business. When making practical plans, Ron Hartfiel used “hometown” (with a little “h”) in his business name to emphasize honesty, reliability and trust.

In a clean, friendly atmosphere, quality vehicle repairs are explained and completed on time. Hard work, steady growth and fine customer service are important. Evidenced by donations to many events, as well as sponsorships, Ron expresses interest in the community. When asked about long-range plans, Ron Hartfiel, Sr., answered: “To contribute to the community and make a modest living.”

Bodhorn, will receive the Civic Beautification Award. Extensively renovated, it is noteworthy that during the project, the credit union remained open to service customers “with business as usual.” Throughout the planning process, step-by-step, over many months, until completion of the entire project, the credit union staff worked closely with the local contractor.

Teamwork created a charming, energy-efficient, welcoming business building, inside and out, landscaped to blend with the character of the neighborhood. This most attractive asset deserves recognition by the 2015 Civic Beautification Award.

Brockport and East advance to Westcott Final

by Warren Kozireski Junior forward Antonio Alvarez scored 24 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to bring his Blue Devils back from a nine-point halftime deficit for a 66-50 win over Spencerport and an opportunity to defend their title in the 17th annual Doug Westcott boys’ basketball tournament. East defeated ChurchvilleChili in the other semi-final 77-55.

Westcott was the Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics at Brockport for 21 years.

The first quarter of the BrockportSpencerport game featured six lead changes before the Rangers took control in the second as senior Charlie Huff scored eight points to stake his team to a 29-22 halftime lead.

But the Blue Devils battled back to score 14 of the last 22 points in the third to take the lead on a Cory Gross lay-up.

Spencerport senior David DeBellis hit a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter and put the Rangers back in front, but the lead was short-lived.

Alvarez and Gross combined to score 21 points down the stretch and the Brockport defense held the Rangers to just two more lay-ups to seal the win.

In addition to Alvarez’s 27 points, Jakeb Mitchell, Gross and Raphael Odey

each added nine for the Blue Devils, who were 15-21 at the free throw line. Justin Johnson was Spencerport’s top scorer with 14 points with Huff finishing with eight and John Feeney adding seven.

In the Churchville-Chili vs East contest, the Saints had their offense in high-gear during a 26 point second quarter with balanced scoring. Dillon Strine scored five points during the period, Malek Williams hit a pair of three-pointers and Eric Lewis five free throws and pair of field goals to give them a 40-31 halftime lead.

The Saints advanced the lead to 12 points as Williams hit a trey to open the second half, but East High went on a 13-0 run to take a one-point lead. The teams traded one point leads with C-C getting baskets from Lewis and Williams, but it was virtually all East High after that as they outscored the Saints 30-6 the rest of the way.

Williams and Lewis led the Saints with 22 points each with Williams adding six rebounds. DeBellis tied for the team lead with six boards while Strine finished with seven points.

Brockport won the last two Westcott Tourney titles and have five overall.

Spencerport has won three times (2007, 2010, 2011) while Churchville-Chili took home the first place trophy four times (2000, 2001, 2006, 2009).

Stephen Curry named Hickok Belt® Award winner for November Stephen Curry, point guard for the National Basketball Association’s Golden State Warriors, has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for the month of November 2015. A select panel of members of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA) conducted the voting.

The voters selected Curry based on his outstanding performance throughout the month - a stretch during which the Warriors went 16-0. During that span, Curry averaged 30.1 points and 5.8 assists per game while shooting .495 from the floor and .438 from three-point range.

Other finalists for the month of November in order of how the NSSA voters ranked them included: Kyle Busch (auto racing), Tyson Fury (boxing),

Patrick Kane (hockey), Christian Colon (baseball), Adrian Peterson (football), Philip Rivers (football), James Harden (basketball), Ben Bishop (hockey) and Mikaela Shiffrin (skiing).

Carry’s selection as the Hickok Belt® Award winner for the month of November recognizes him as “the best of the best” in professional sports for the month and makes him the ninth candidate eligible to receive the overall Hickok Belt® Award for 2015, joining Tom Brady, James Harden, Jordan Spieth, Bryce Harper, LeBron James, Carli Lloyd, Jake Arrieta and Daniel Murphy.

Graupman trey gives Cadets a win

by Warren Kozireski Hilton managed only eight points in the fourth quarter, but senior Cameron Graupman hit a three-pointer from the top of the key with 1:10 remaining to put the Cadets ahead for good in a tight 61-59 girls’ basketball victory over visiting Irondequoit.

The Cadet led by as many as ten points and never trailed in the high scoring first quarter and took a 2316 advantage after one. Irondequoit fought back to tie the game twice in the second quarter before a Meaghan McGwin put-back gave Hilton a 34-32 halftime lead.

Irondequoit grabbed a pair of onepoint leads early in the third, but a pair of field goals from Graupman and a scoop shot and drive from Raine Gardner, in just her second game back from an injury, as part of a 8-0 run helped the Cadets regain the lead.

The Eagles again took a pair of onepoint leads early in the final quarter, but sophomore forward Alyssa Juergens hit a jumper to make it 57-56

Cadets. Irondequoit fought back with another basket to again lead by one before Graupman hit her trey for a 60-58 lead.

An Eagle was fouled on a three-point attempt, but made only one of the three free throws to cut the Cadets lead to one, but Strauss hauled down a key defensive rebound with three seconds remaining and Graupman made a free throw with 1.8 seconds left to seal the win.

“They played and we didn’t and they took advantage,” a disappointed Hilton head coach Jeff Eichas said. “We only had four team rebounds with three minutes left in the first half, which showed our lack of effort. We scored, but we didn’t defend.”

Graupman, headed to the College of Saint Rose in Albany next fall, led the Cadets with 22 points. Strauss had 17 points with five rebounds, Chloe Graupman scored seven points, Juergens added six points with four rebounds and Gardner had four rebounds plus four of the team’s 12 steals.

The bride is the daughter of Eileen Lanzafame of Hilton and Sam Lanzafame of Greece. The groom’s parents are Angela Dieni of Irondequoit and Angelo Pignata of Greenville, South Carolina.

The bride’s sister, Sarah Lanzafame, was maid of honor and Jessica Barry was matron of honor. Acting as bridesmaids were Jessica Lanzafame, Nicole Meloni, Stephanie Pignata, Samantha Cala, Christina Schmitt and Christina Kilijanski. Maley Barry was the flower girl.

Dan Cacciato, cousin of the groom, and Marcello Andiloro served as best men.

• Sleep: Studies show a link between sleep deprivation and excess pounds.

• Be accountable: Keep a food and exercise diary to reinforce good habits.

• Seek support: Weight loss and maintenance is no cakewalk. Turn to weight loss counselors, dietitians and online communities for support with any weight loss journey.
