Boy Scouts Lighthouse District 2019 Klondike Derby

The Great Sled Race gets underway.

The Boy Scouts of America Lighthouse District 2019 Klondike Derby was hosted by Troop 240 of Greece and held at the Parma VFW on January 25 and 26. There were 84 youths and 33 adults from 11 troops and two Webelos 2 dens who participated in the Saturday events. Six troops braved the elements and camped overnight. The event offered camping, competitions which included Fire Building, First Aid (Hurry Cases), First Aid (Carries), Map and Compass, Height and Distance, Ice Rescue, Team Snowshoeing, Emergency Shelter, Sled Inspection, Knots, Lashings, Plant Identification, the Great Sled Race and fun for area troops.

Soup Bowl II raises funds for local senior programs and scholarship With outdoor temperatures in the teens, it took an impressive combination of 40 community volunteers and over 120 individuals “tasting” hot soups donated by 12 eateries to make the second annual Soup Bowl a success.

The fundraising event, sponsored by the Sweden Senior Association, Inc. (SSAI), was held at the Sweden-Clarkson Recreation Center on Saturday, January 26. On-site volunteers ladled a large variety of soups from the following restaurants — each contributing 2 gallons of soup: Abe’s, Spencerport (Stuffed Pepper); Brockport Diner (New England Clam Chowder); Custom House, Brockport (Homemade Chicken Noodle); 58 Main/BBQ and Brew, Brockport (Creamy Tomato Tortellini); Farmer’s Table, Hamlin (Five Mushroom); Golden Eagle, Sweden (Chicken Pasta); Java Junction, Brockport (Brazilian Bean Soup); Jimmy Z’s, Brockport (Chili); Piccolo Fazools Bistro, Brockport (Chicken Pastina); Red Bird Café, Brockport (Tuscan White Bean w/meat); The Millhouse, Clarkson (Lemon Chicken Rice Soup); Two Brothers, Sweden (Beef Barley).

Ninety-one ticket holders voted for their favorite soup.

The Farmer’s Table received the most votes followed by Java Junction. Abe’s and 58 Main/BBQ and Brew tied for third place.

Other lunchtime meal donors included: Brightly Farms (one bushel of apples), Coleen’s Kitchen (homemade muffins) and Heritage Farm, Carina Sawyer (homemade bread).

Those attending Soup Bowl II also browsed the exhibits set up in the hallways displaying the handiwork of the SSAI quilters, Brockport Dresses for Girls Around the World program, and the knitters. A bake sale and basket raffle enticed the lunch crowd and the youngsters and families attending the youth basketball tournament in the adjacent gymnasium.

The SSAI proceeds will help support an annual scholarship to a Brockport High School senior, and benefit member programs that help those in need at area hospitals, battered women’s shelters, nursing homes, foreign countries, and the local clothing shelf.

The 2019 Soup Bowl chair and SSAI treasurer, Roz Smith said, “I want to thank our generous community and the SSAI members, Betty Coopenberg, President, Joan Lavell, Vice-President, Secretary, Barb Grady, and Andrea Perry, Volunteer Coordinator, as well as Joyce Henion, baked food coordinator, for all their hard work.

Additional thanks to Bob Coopenberg, kitchen supervisor, Sweden-Clarkson Recreation Assistant, Joe Kincaid, and the countless others whose fine efforts made this such a warm community event.”

Quest students show off tech tools at Board of Education meeting A group of students from Quest Elementary School in Hilton attended the January 22 Board of Education meeting so they could show Board members and the other adults in attendance technology tools they are using in their classrooms and at home. About 20 students demonstrated Google Sites, SeeSaw and Flipgrid as ways to create portfolios, making it easier for them to set goals and reflect on their work.

They even created a special FlipGrid that allowed attendees to connect with their

classes. The students also demonstrated Padlet and Storyboard - tools that make their learning more visible and help teachers make planners more fun.

“These tools are allowing our students to connect, create, collaborate and personalize learning in ways they could not prior to having this technology,” said Jason Cring, Instructional Technology Support specialist. “It’s allowing our teachers to make learning visible and go deep into the content.”

Hilton Community Indoor Flea Market scheduled for April 6 The Hilton Community Indoor Flea Market has been so successful every year that the committee has decided to have it again this year. On January 15th the Clarkson Town Board held a special meeting to appoint a new supervisor and a new board member. I attended, and as I left, I was reminded of a quote I first heard 50 years ago, when I was a student at SUNY Brockport. The quote, by British historian, Lord Acton, reads: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” A bit of recent Clarkson history might help to explain.

In the election of November, 2017, Jerry Underwood, running as both a Democrat and as a member of the newly formed Common Ground party, won the race for Town Supervisor. Jerry and the rest of the Common Ground candidates, including my wife, Theresa, ran primarily because they felt Clarkson needed the checks and balances provided by bipartisan governance. For a decade prior to Jerry’s election, every elected and appointed position in Clarkson had been held by a Republican.

Jerry Underwood ran for office simply to serve his community. He even donated his entire paycheck to our struggling library. He was prepared to work long hours, for free. What he hadn’t anticipated, however, was the degree of resistance, resentment, undermining and outright hostility he would encounter from the remaining, entrenched leadership. He refused to respond in kind; instead, after a year of such treatment, he chose to resign.

I was saddened by Jerry’s resignation, but appalled at what followed. Without any public deliberation, or any input from the community--the same community that voted for bipartisan governance--the board quickly appointed one of its own as new supervisor, and someone else to fill the new supervisor’s vacated seat on the board. It’s hard to imagine a clearer demonstration of total disregard for the will of the voters. Yes, what they did was legal. Still, given the unusual circumstances the town found itself in, you’d think the board would have at least put forth a facade of fairness, by interviewing candidates of varied political persuasions, to find the most qualified new board member, let alone new supervisor.

When some of us protested our complete disenfranchisement from the process, our new supervisor responded by laughing at us. I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t seen it myself.

So, we’re back to the status quo in Clarkson. We’re back to one-party rule, and all the inequities that arise from absolute power. At least until the next election.

Aurora House under new leadership Marjorie A. Smith, LCSW, recently accepted the position of Executive Director at Aurora House Comfort Care Home in Spencerport. Smith comes to Aurora House from a local Hospice Agency after eight years as a Home Hospice Social Worker.

Her role concentrated on supporting terminally ill patients as they navigated the last stage of their lives, with focus on the dignity and comfort of the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. Her commitment to and love of Hospice grew from her personal experience with family members receiving Hospice care. Smith graduated from Roberts Wesleyan College with a Bachelor’s in Organizational Management, and returned

to Roberts to complete her Masters of Social Work. Prior to Hospice, she worked in the mental health field as a therapist.

All services of Aurora House are offered free of charge through the generosity and compassion of friends and neighbors. In Decemember, $12,000 was donated to the Aurora House Lights of Remembrance in honor of loved ones. Those funds will help the House continue to serve those in need of comfort care.

Kendall boys rally falls short

by Warren Kozireski Down by 18 points at halftime, Kendall rallied to close to within one point with 4:15 remaining in regulation before running out of gas in a 67-55 loss to visiting Attica.

Eagles senior co-captain Nathan Warters kept the game within reach as he scored ten first half points along with a trey from sophomore Derek Edick and a field goal by senior point guard John Rath before the Blue Devils used a 142 run late in the second quarter to double-up the Eagles 36-18 at the half.

The two teams opened the second half trading baskets with Rath hitting a pair of treys, Warters a lay-up and a put-back with junior Nick Spellan adding a three-pointer.

Edick knocked down two free throws and Rath an old-fash-

ioned three-point play as the Eagles ended the third quarter on a 7-0 run to close to within eight points of the lead.

In the fourth quarter, Rath added two free throws and a three-pointer, Edick a three-pointer and Warters on a steal to close to within 54-53 with 4:15 remaining.

But the Eagles ran out of gas hitting just one field goal the rest of the way.

Rath led the Eagles with 21 points and added four rebounds and three steals while Warters had 16 points and Edick was also in double-figures with 12 to go with five rebounds and four steals. Senior co-captain Hunter Menze had a team-high seven rebounds and junior Brian Shaw added four boards for the 6-8 Eagles.

They will honor their seniors February 5 prior to the final regular season home contest.

Golden Eagles sweep Fredonia

by Warren Kozireski Senior and leading scorer Emily Nester was held off the scoresheet in the third quarter, but scored ten in the fourth to lead the College at Brockport women to a 61-51 victory before the men ran out to a 38-5 first half lead on their way to a 107-50 trouncing of Fredonia to complete the doubleheader sweep.

The women led for most of the first half as Bailey Pratt scored eight of her 14 points including two three-pointers and took a two-point lead into the halftime locker room.

After struggling offensively through the opening minutes of the second half, a Brockport timeout resulted in a 12-0 run highlighted by two more treys from Pratt and three field goals off the bench by freshman point guard Chelsea Henry of Greece Athena.

Freshman Morgan Elmer added a three-pointer and sophomore Julianna Taylor hit a reverse lay-up to extend the lead to as many as 12 points late in the third quarter.

Nester and Fredonia traded baskets early in the fourth, but the Blue Devils cut the Brockport lead to five with five minutes remaining. Another Brockport timeout and another run – this time 9-0 as Nester hit a pair of free throws and went to her left hand on a drive along with three points from Henry and a lay-up by junior Emily Merrill to close out the win.

Schultz won the 200-individual medley in 2:09.64 and the 100-breaststroke by 15 seconds in 1:03.06 while Nau took the 50-freestyle in :24.71 and the 100-freestyle in :55.27. Keyes won the 200-freestyle in 2:00.16 and the 500-freestyle in 5:33.58.

The three, with senior Ian Gillis ended the meet with a first place finish in the 400-freestyle relay in 3:42.38.

Gillis also broke the one minute mark in winning the 100-backstroke in :59.48 and won the meet-opening 200medley relay with Nau, junior Alex Ingham and sophomore Ryan Choate in 1:55.73.

It marked the Rangers third win of the season. Sectional Preliminaries begin for Class B on February 13 in Webster.

The Golden Eagles men pressured and ran their way out to a 38-5 lead as Brockport High grad Antonio Alvarez had 11 first half points and junior Justin Summers ten points.

“We were just very intense; we’re coming off three losses so we knew what we needed to do to get back and we got back,” Alvarez said. “The competition is going to get harder, but if we come out with that intensity then I know we’re going to make it all the way and I believe in that.”

Fredonia finally found some offense over the final minutes of the first half, but Brockport took a 55-22 lead into the second half.

A 17-0 2 run midway through the second half put Brockport ahead 81-32, who received offensive contributions from all 15 players who saw minutes.

It marked the largest margin of victory for the men since beating the same Blue Devils by 50 in January 2014. The team record is an 88 point margin.

Summers led the Golden Eagles with 17 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks while Alvarez added 11 points and six rebounds. Stroman Montgomery had 14 points and Josh Nelson added nine points on three treys.

The Brockport women sit fourth in the SUNYAC conference with a 6-5 record with seven regular season games remaining while the men are 7-4, also fourth and one game behind third place Cortland. The top two teams in the conference receive first round byes with third and fourth hosting first round playoff games.

“If you look at our schedule coming down the road there are some teams that are at the bottom half of the league that we haven’t played yet,” Brockport men’s head coach Greg Dunne said. “Our strength of schedule we are number one in the region by a lot, so we need to get healthy to make a real good run at this.”

On January 10, Barbara Marhatta, an American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) member of Ferris Goodridge Unit #330 in Spencerport, was honored with a surprise presentation for all of her endeavors to send care packages to overseas military personnel.

Sergeant Major (SGM) Gary Darnell of the New York Army National Guard (NYARNG) unit attached to the 10th Mountain Division of Fort Drum recently returned from Afghanistan and Iraq. While in Baghdad, Iraq, he helped supervise operations of the base headquarters located across from the U.S. Embassy. U.S. military troops and civilian contractors, as well as military personnel from twenty-seven other countries passed through this facility.

Always available were the various gifts — donations of toiletries, first aid items, brain teasers, non-perishable snacks, etc. — from the many packages Marhatta sent regularly.

So, SGM Darnell turned the tables and presented her with a special surprise gift.

The large wrapped package included a wooden shadow box case displaying an American flag that had flown over the U.S. Embassy in recognition of Marhatta’s continuous contributions to the welfare of the troops. There was also a certificate ascertaining its authenticity. Also present was Sergeant First Class (SFC) Wayne Bush, who is also a current member of the NYARNG. SFC Bush has worked with Marhatta for approximately thirteen years acquiring mailing addresses of deployed service members. SFC Bush is a current member of Chili American Legion.

Marhatta, who has carried on these works of kindness for over twenty-eight years, says that she will continue to send “smiles across the miles” for the military troops and she recognizes the assistance of many in our region who support this project.

Brockport Elks to host celebration for Challenger Baseball and Tennis The Brockport Elks Lodge is sponsoring a second annual party to celebrate the accomplishments of the players who participated in Challenger Baseball and Tennis programs this past year, as well as to raise funds to support the programs.

Brockport church provides a Pray-Ground for children

by Tami Raco Pastor Nick Dorland of First Presbyterian Church of Brockport envisioned the church to be very welcoming to families and youth. As part of the approach to prioritize families, he and the planning committee decided to implement a Pray-Ground in the sanctuary of the church during worship services. In many churches children are often in a different room or seated at the back of the church for fear of disturbances.

The command to bring children into worship services may date back to the church’s earliest days, motivating First Presbyterian Church to approach children in their service differently than they have in the past. Although it is unprecedented in many churches, FPC of Brockport encourages parents to bring their children age three and up to the front of the church in an area designated for kids and families called a

Pray-Ground. The church has a nice open space for the Pray-Ground with a soft rug, chairs and a cart with activities children can engage in quietly. This allows families to participate in the service and be a member of the church while having activities to help keep children quietly entertained.

Pastor Nick feels it is important “that kids be in worship but still be kids.”

Although the Pray-Ground is relatively new and it’s hard to measure the impact, Pastor Nick feels it has increased the “intergenerational hospitability” within the faith community. He has witnessed some touching moments of seniors interacting with children as well as some cherished moments of children proudly displaying their coloring page of positive words from the service such as “Grace.”

The Kiwanis Club of Spencerport heard about the Patriot Guard Riders at a recent meeting. Founded in 2005 to shield families of fallen heroes from those that would disrupt the services of their loved ones, the Patriot Guard Riders has grown to include thousands of members across all 50 states in the US. They are a 100 percent volunteer 501(c)(3) organization. As their membership has grown, so has the scope of their mission. They also honor first responders as well as our military veterans.

Additionally, they have an active Help On The Homefront (HOTH) program, which provides assistance to our veterans and their families. To join the Patriot Guard Riders go to their website, www. patriotguard.org, and click on the login/join link in the upper menu to register. As for requirements, anyone and everyone can join and stand with them. One doesn’t need to be a veteran, or ride a bike. All one needs is respect for our military, veterans, and first responders; and desire to show that respect to them and their families. Opinion/Comments Monroe County Association of Villages responds to proposed elimination of AIM funding

ANNOUNCING THE 4th ANNUAL

TRIBUTE TO

FIRST RESPONDERS

We, the mayors of the 10 villages in Monroe County, are writing to register our strong opposition to the Governor’s proposed elimination of AIM funding for 480 of the 533 villages in New York State. Nine of our 10 villages will lose all their AIM funding under this proposal.

As we move into budget preparation season for 2019-20, this reduction in our budgets is especially concerning.

We have all worked assiduously over the last five years to keep our budgets within the 2% tax cap even when the tax cap in reality was considerably less than 2%. Simply eliminating state funding that is less than 2% of our expenditures does not compute to staying under what is proposed to be a permanent tax cap. In exchange for loss of AIM funding we are offered a carrot of tax revenue on internet sales. That may give some relief to villages in Monroe County which shares sales tax revenue with its villages, but not all counties do. And there is no guarantee that this revenue would equal or exceed what each of us is losing in AIM funding.

AIM funding helps pay for the many services local governments provide to their residents. We pride ourselves on our historic, walkable villages, the quality of life they offer to residents, and on our responsiveness to our constituents. We know that it’s the most local government that has the greatest impact on peoples’ daily lives.

Here in dollars and cents is how loss of AIM funding will affect some of our villages in Monroe County.

•Brockport’s tax rate will increase $.45/1000 or 3.9% •Churchville’s tax rate will increase $.11/1000 or 3.4% •Fairport ‘s tax rate would increase $.35/1000 or 5.28% •Honeoye Falls tax rate would increase $.07/1000 or 3% •Spencerport’s tax rate will increase $.15/1000 or 4.2% •Webster’s tax rate will increase $.14/1000 or 6.3% AIM funding, though frozen since 2008, has been the State’s commitment to its municipalities. The Governor’s

Consolidated Funding Program has absorbed State monies that were once available to villages through a variety of State funding programs that have been discontinued.

AIM represents the last source of State funding available to many villages.

We join the chorus of other municipal leaders who deem this budget cut regressive and punitive, and we urge our legislators to make sure AIM funding remains in the state budget.

If one of your goals is to volunteer more this year, I hope this letter helps you find a place to donate your time. We have some incredible volunteer opportunities in our community. Finding the right match can help you find new friends, connect with our community and maybe learn a new skill.

In our area there are many organizations such as our local libraries, Seymour and Hamlin Public Library, where you can volunteer helping the staff in the library, with events, or join the Friends of the Library at either of those locations. Becoming a volunteer firefighter is a very rewarding way to serve your community, by joining either the Brockport or Hamlin Fire Departments.

There are service organizations you can join that do much to enrich our towns like the Kiwanis Club, the Lions Club, and the Rotary Club. If history interests you, there is the Clarkson Historical Society and the Western Monroe Historical Society. Both societies are active with many events such as the Swift Comet 5K Race in Clark-

son and Peddlers Market on the grounds of the MorganManning House, to name a few.

You could join the Brockport Integrated Service Clubs Organization better known as BISCO. Volunteers are always welcome whether it is building a playground, working at the Arts Festival, Duck Derby or other projects.

Elderwood of Lakeside at Brockport welcomes volunteers who sit with residents for one-on-one visits and help with recreation activities.

Many of our local churches have outreach opportunities that you may get involved with. If your time is short, you can always drop off food to the Brockport Food Shelf and Hamlin Life Solutions.

These are just a few organizations in our community that come to mind. There are many benefits volunteering can have on your health and wellbeing. Volunteering not only enriches your life, but the community around us.

Please shelter your outdoor pet Winter has arrived, and is often the time of bitter cold snow and winds. During this season, I am frequently called for dogs left outside without adequate shelter.

The dog owners usually retort “Only for a short time” or “It has a fur coat.”

All dogs kept outside must be provided adequate shelter to protect from rain, blowing winds and inclement weather. This is required per Article 26, section 353b of the Agriculture Markets law.

I also recommend dogs kept outside permanently be allotted 20 percent more food during the winter, to allow extra calories for warmth.

Please be mindful of our pets kept outdoors, as our habits must change along with the seasons.

Riga Recreation “WinterFest” 2019 On Sunday, January 27, Riga Recreation held its annual “WinterFest” in partnership with the Churchville Lions Club, the Churchville-Chili School District and the Monroe County Parks Department, at the Churchville Elementary School.

The Lions, once again, sold out their “World Famous” Chicken Barbecue and there were carnival games, wildlife demonstrations, facepainting, airbrush tattoos, caricature drawings, a bounce house, and airplay juggling throughout the school.

Thanks go out to the following organizations and people that made this year’s event a huge success: the Churchville Lions Club for their famous barbecue; the Church-

ville Elementary School’s Kitchen and Custodial Staff; Noelle Burley and Girl Scout Troop #916 for a wonderful carnival experience in the gymnasium; the Churchville Leo Club and their advisor, Marty Molinari; Sam Villareale, the caricature guy for his wonderful portraits; Adrianna’s terrific face paintings; Airplay Juggling; the Wildlife Educators Coalition; Arlene’s Air-brush Tattoos; and Air Affair for their bounce house.

Unlocking math puzzles and mazes at Chestnut Ridge School It is never too early to learn how to collaborate and solve problems. Ask the students in Jodi Piontkowski’s first-grade class at Churchville-Chili’s Chestnut Ridge Elementary School. They are already practicing the fine art of teamwork, along with many other critical life skills, while learning how to count, read, think logically and have fun. Piontkowski, like teachers throughout the district’s schools, is using a variety of student-driven problembased learning projects to increase engagement and raise achievement.

The active learning strategy her students were focused on just before the holidays was based on the model of the escape room, a kind of timed scavenger hunt featuring

puzzles or riddles. The students worked in teams to solve a series of problems that required logic, pattern or shape recognition, and counting skills. The goal was to use the answers to unlock a safe holding a special message from Santa Claus.

As each group moved from one holiday-themed challenge to the next, the members became a cohesive team.

They knew their goals and took responsibility for achieving them. At the end, the multiple teams needed to work together to find consensus on their answers in order to open the locked box.

The picture puzzle at Station 4 requires team members to collaborate and use clues from the alphabet.

Creating life-long learners is the ultimate goal at Churchville-Chili schools.

“Experiences like this in first grade help to set the foundation for more advanced learning and social interactions down the road,” said Piontkowski. “Students learn how to respect each other’s strengths and differences, and how to use that to advantage. The teacher guides them, but they really drive their own learning process. The strategy builds creative, curious, confident learners. The life skills practiced here will serve these young people throughout their lives and careers.”

“The Johnston Harvester Co. and the Great Fire of 1882” Program at the Morgan-Manning House February 13

by Doug Hickerson On Wednesday, February 13, the Morgan-Manning House will be the scene of a program entitled “The Johnston Harvester Co. Fire of 1882.” The presenters will be Gordon and Peggy Fox who will supplement their comments with PowerPoint pictures.

The event, sponsored by the Western Monroe Historical Society (WMHS), starts at 7p.m. at the Victorian mansion located at 151 Main Street, Brockport. It is free and open to the public and will end with refreshments.

A fire on June 19, 1882, destroyed the Johnston plant and killed two men. The Rochester Fire department sent men and equipment on a train to Brockport. The railroad closed the line to other traffic and the trip of 17 miles took 19 minutes.

Brockport experienced an economic slump for years due to 500 employees out of work. Some moved to Batavia where the new Johnston Harvester Plant was opened. By 1920 they were making 65,000 harvesting machines per year, selling them all over the world.

Gordon (“Gordy”) and Peggy Fox became involved in the Morgan-Manning House in the early 2000s. The WMHS board of trustees awarded Gordy its first Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award in May, 2016 “For extraordinary leadership and labor in the renovation and maintenance of the Morgan-Manning House for more than ten years” and serving many years as finance chair and board treasurer. He is now the board president.

The couple has always been interested in history through reading, they said. According to Gordy, their life-long interest was sparked by their frequent trips to Peggy’s relatives in North Carolina. The family was still living in a farm built in 1887. Peggy’s maiden aunt was “a non-stop teller of local history” and would take them all over the area to places steeped in fascinating history and folklore. “That made historians out of both of us!” Gordy said.

Millennial Spotlight - Margaret Stewart

by Shelby Toth Having to move from place to place isn’t new to Margaret Stewart. She began her life in South Carolina, before relocating to Spencerport about 10 years ago, where she was quickly able to find a group of friends due to the small town nature.

“Everyone kind of knows each other and it makes for - I mean, if a rumor gets out everybody knows - but most of the time it’s a really good time,” Stewart said.

In her college career, Stewart has been enrolled in three different schools, and is currently attending The College at Brockport studying journalism and English literature.

While she misses the warmth of Carolina, Stewart has found a place for herself here. However, staying local after college isn’t her goal.

“I don’t know if I want to stay in Rochester,” Stewart said. “I mean, Rochester and Spencerport are home, but I’d really like to not stay.”

Despite not wanting to stay local, receiving the Excelsior Scholarship while she’s been in college means Stewart will be in New York for the next few years, either in graduate school or pursuing a job.

“I have to stay here for the next two years, so I’m working on internships and getting my foot in the door,” Stewart said.

“Trying to slowly but surely network and get my foot into places.”

This goal is what led Stewart to shadowing reporters from WHEC Channel 10.

They have helped her learn more realistic expectations for what going into the field of journalism will look like, as well as showing her the skills she still needs to learn if she wants to follow their career path.

Stewart has a tentative plan for how her next year should be. She hopes to intern at Channel 10 this spring, and is applying to TIME, National Geographic and Penguin Random House for internships in the summer. With the variety of options she’s looking in to, she still isn’t sure exactly what job she’d like.

“I’m back and forth between print media and T.V. journalism at the moment,” Stewart said. “And so if I was to move, I know that TIME and National Geographic both have locations in D.C. as well as New York City. I wouldn’t actually ever want to really live in New York City, I think that the city life is not something I’m accustomed to and it’d be crowded, and I’ve just always

At the end of the day, though, Stewart isn’t that picky on where she ends up. She realizes that in order to get a job, she has to be flexible and open to different locations, as well as potentially moving around a lot.

She noted that many contracts are two years for journalism jobs, but that she has no problem moving around because she’s done it all her life.

What matters most to Stewart is finding a job where she can create content she cares about.

“I know that not every project is going to be a passion project, but I want to feel some sort of really close connection to what I’m writing in some way,” Stewart said. “I have no problem being in a super small market, doing what I love, as long as I’m doing what I love.”

Stewart may be worried about the future ahead, as many college students are. But no matter how many new jobs and new places she finds herself, it will be just another adventure for Stewart.
