Coy Raines becomes Saints first State Wrestling Champ

Three Saints wrestlers, led by Coach Justin Raines, competed in the NYSPHSAA Wrestling Championship Tournament held February 23 and 24 at the MVP Arena in Albany.

Gael Sanchez, Cael Raines, and Coy Raines all competed and represented Churchville-Chili and Section V in the tournament.

Gael (285 lbs.) finished in eighth place and Cael (138 lbs.) in the top 12 in their respective weight classes.

Senior Coy Raines became the first State Champion in the Churchville-Chili wrestling program’s history. He defeated Section I’s Alexander Berisha in a 3-1 decision in the final round to secure the 215 lb. championship. Coy is just the third studentathlete in Saints history to win a state championship in any sport. Nikki Prad won the state title in long jump in 1994 and John Carr won the 55 meter hurdles in 1995, both for indoor track.

Assemblyman

held a press conference in Ogden on February 22 to highlight their opposition to Governor Hochul’s slashing of local transportation aid, particularly a proposed $60 million cut for the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS), the state’s primary source of funding for local roads, bridges and culverts.

The group argued local roads and bridges must be the foundation for any state infrastructure plan moving forward. Local roads and bridges account for 87 percent of New York state roads, and more

than half of its bridges. Additionally, 48 of the vehicle miles traveled in New York are on local roads, yet less than 12 percent of the taxes and fees paid to the state by these drivers go toward the maintenance and upkeep of these crucial roadways.

They also argued that investing in local road infrastructure not only spurs economic growth by facilitating smoother transportation of goods and services but also attracts investments and generates job opportunities. Conversely, neglecting funding for local roads can result in deteriorating infrastructure, heightened traffic congestion, increased maintenance costs and compromised safety.

Hawley, Jensen, and their colleagues are calling on state lawmakers to increase funding for the CHIPS program by $160 million to a total of $698.1 million annually to help boost the quality of transportation infrastructure across the state. They believe this proposal will help to improve road conditions for residents of Western New York and ensure taxpayer dollars are used efficiently and effectively.

Jensen said, “I extend my gratitude to everyone who joined us today to

advocate for increased funding for our local roads. With the escalating costs of infrastructure projects, every dollar becomes crucial. We have all pledged to prioritize the safety of our residents, and it’s important our state government supports this mission.”

“Local roads are the foundation of our infrastructure here in New York state,” said Hawley. “Despite this, however, the governor has year in and year out neglected to give these vital roadways the funds they need for basic upkeep and maintenance in the state budget. I’ve talked to numerous highway superintendents and board members over the years, and they all tell me the same thing: we need more funding for our local roads. Without an increase in programs like CHIPS, these roadways will deteriorate due to the rising costs of materials and repairs. This is completely unacceptable. If these were downstate roads we were talking about, we would have no problem getting these funds. Gov. Hochul needs to remember her Western New York roots and give upstate roads the attention and funding they deserve.”

Sweden water survey completed; data forwarded to engineers

The Town of Sweden conducted a water quality/quantity survey over the past six weeks in areas of the town without access to public water. The survey also focused on property owners’ desire for water and support at different cost levels. The data has been forwarded to the town’s engineer, MRB Group, for analysis in conjunction with engineering constraints and federal funds criteria.

Once the engineers have finished their review, they will meet with the Town Board to develop a plan for a potential new water district. The Sweden Town Board will host a public meeting at that time to share the data and possibilities. Once a project is selected, the town will begin the lengthy process of filing a Rural Development grant and low-interest loan application.

Support group for widows meeting in Spencerport

Naomi’s Circle is dedicated to providing a safe place for widows and widowers to express themselves, freely, about how widowhood has impacted their lives. The group will meet at noon on the second Thursday of the month through May (March 14, April 11, and May 9) at the First Congregational Church, 65 Church Street, Spencerport. Naomi’s Circle

will meet in the Fellowship Hall for a light luncheon and a conversation on widowhood. Attendees are asked to bring a small dish to share.

Annual Women in Music Festival returns to Nazareth University

To celebrate the artistry of women composers, the Nazareth University School of Music is hosting the third annual Women in Music Festival, March 7 through 10, at Nazareth and Buffalo State University, featuring Composer-in-Residence Lori Laitman, the Greater Rochester Women’s Philharmonic under the direction of Nancy Strelau, and faculty and student performers from area colleges. Festival events and activities include concerts, master classes, panel discussions, and a film screening at the Little Theatre, all of which will serve as a catalyst for purposeful dialogue, future collaborations, and engaging performances for the Rochester and Buffalo communities.

Highlights of the 2024 Festival include:

•Concert with Nazareth Faculty and Students and Guest Performers at 6:00 p.m. on March 9 in the Wilmot Recital Hall at Nazareth. Featuring works by Laitman and other women composers, and performances by students and faculty from SUNY Buffalo State, Eastman School of Music, Nazareth University, SUNY Onondaga Community College, and the Rochester Institute of Technology.

•Festival Concert In the Company of Women at 3 p.m. on March 10 in Nazareth’s Beston Hall, featuring Nazareth School of Music faculty and the

Greater Rochester Women’s Philharmonic performing world premieres by Laitman and her daughter, composer Diana Rosenblum, featuring mezzosoprano Katie Hannigan. WXXI Classical 91.5 FM’s Mona Seghatoleslami is the concert MC. Described by Fanfare Magazine as, “one of the most talented and intriguing of living composers,” Lori Laitman has composed operas, choral works, and hundreds of songs setting texts by classical and contemporary poets, including those who perished in the Holocaust. Her music is widely performed throughout the world and has generated substantial critical acclaim.

The Churchville-Chili LEO Club has scheduled its annual March Mayhem Basketball Game. William Beeman

The Willie Bee Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-forprofit charitable organization founded to benefit local families who have a child facing a life threatening illness. The foundation is in memory of William Beeman who was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor at 3-1/2 months. Will

courageously fought for almost 20 months, including numerous surgeries, chemotheraphy and radiation treatments. Will died in 2016, just a few weeks short of his second birthday.

The Willie Bee Foundation is on a mission to help ease the burden that a life threatening diagnosis places on a family. The money raised goes to fund personalized and special supports that not every family has access to. Support funds run the entire gambit – from specialized care to travel for treatments – and would include whatever is needed for caring and compassionate care. The Foundation wants Will’s legacy to be one of generosity and goodwill, making a difference one family at a time right here in our community.

The Churchville-Chili LEO Club is comprised of students who perform a variety of community service activities. The club has been in existence for 26 years and is sponsored by the Churchville Lions Club. GPAS concert to raise awareness for GRASP

The Greece Performing Arts Society (GPAS) will present their Pops for Pets Concert on Sunday, March 10, 2 p.m., at 75 Stutson Street, Rochester. Raising awareness for GRASP (Greece Residents Assisting Stray Pets), this Sunday matinee will feature performers from the Greece Community Orchestra, Greece Concert Band, Greece Choral Society, and 75 Stutson Street.

Register to help “Pick Up The Parks”

Registration forms for the annual “Pick Up the Parks” event are now available on the Monroe County website: monroecounty.gov/parkspickuptheparks. The clean-up initiative takes place throughout the Monroe County Parks System on April 20 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Volunteers can register to help clean up the parks from the winter accumulation of trash and debris, reduce litter entering local waterways and help get the parks looking great for the spring and summer.

“Every year, hundreds of residents across Monroe County volunteer to clean up Monroe County’s parks after months of trash and debris build up from the winter,” said County Executive Bello. “Whether you are picking up trash, raking leaves, or performing other duties, your efforts help make our parks a cleaner and safer space for the community. If you’re looking for a way to give back to the community this

Earth Day, I encourage you to sign up with your friends and families for a rewarding day that will ready our parks for the warmer months.”

Specific jobs include:

•Picking up trash/litter and/or loading up trucks to take trash off-site

Roberts Wesleyan University and Northeastern Seminary unite operations

Roberts Wesleyan University and Northeastern Seminary have received approval by the New York State Board of Regents to combine the two institutions effective June 30, 2024. This collaborative alliance, authorized by the board of trustees in the university’s Vision 2030 Strategic Plan, will streamline operations and governance to form a single institution that reflects a shared history and mission to provide comprehensive Christian education anchored in the liberal arts alongside a theological education that prepares women and men for ministry in the church and the world.

While governed by a shared board of directors, Roberts Wesleyan and Northeastern Seminary have historically operated as separate educational corporations and legal entities. Over the next several months, leadership teams from both institutions will work to ensure a seamless transition, aligning academic offerings, campus resources and administrative functions under a common heritage and the leadership of President Rupert A. Hayles Jr.

Northeastern Seminary’s work will continue as an embedded seminary within the university and will provide a consistent theological course curriculum led by expert faculty. Students currently enrolled in the seminary will not experience any disruption with their intended degree programs, and the agreement sets the stage for expanded academic offerings and new opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, spiritual enrichment and community engagement. Students will also have improved ac-

cess to campus resources, including financial aid, scholarship opportunities, student services and administrative functions.

Rochester / New York City –Tom passed unexpectedly and peacefully on February 20, 2024. He was born April 10, 1984 in Morristown, NJ and grew up in Spencerport. He is survived by his parents, Joseph and Christine McEntee; sister Maggie McEntee; brother-in-law Austin Brown; niece Evelyn; nephew Caiden; close friend Beatrice Frias; and his many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.

Tom cherished his family and friends, going out of his way to connect with those he loved. He had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh. Tom had a unique insight on life and always had a story to tell. He was a kind and gentle soul, and will be dearly missed.

•Sorensen, Elizabeth A. (Betty), died February 26, 2024 at age 81. She is survived by her husband, Peter; her sons, Andrew (Gina), Michael, Steve (Kelly), and Jeff (Ginger) Sorensen; her eight grandchildren, Kevin (Whitney), Jacob (Madison), Joshua, Jack, Olivia, Charlie, Delaney, and Elin; two great-grandchildren, with a third great granddaughter due in August; and her brothers, John (Kathy) and Terry (Donna) Riordan. Betty was predeceased by her granddaughter, Ava Sorensen (2012). She was a longtime elementary school teacher starting in the Rochester City School District before working for more than two decades for the Diocese of Rochester. At one point in her career, she was the Director of Hilton Daycare Center so she could continue to work with children while raising her family. After retiring, she served as a substitute teacher in the Hilton Central School District. She also served as a member of the Hilton Central School District Board of Education, Hilton-Parma Parks and Recreation Commission, and founded the Children’s Choir at St. Leo Church in Hilton.

Spencerport Stars and Stripes program

Spencerport Stars and Stripes is a program of the Spencerport Rotary Club. Just ahead of four patriotic holidays – Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day – volunteers will place a three by five-foot United States flag on an eight-foot wooden pole in the yard of a home or business. They will remove it a few days later.

The Rotary recommends this service as a gift for someone who “has everything” or who does not wish to maintain a flag on their property full-time. All products are of the highest quality and made in the USA.

Ogden Assessor announces mailing of new assessment values

Beginning the week of March 1, 2024, Assessment Disclosure Notices, also known as Impact Notices, will be mailed to all property owners within the Town of Ogden. Notices will include information pertaining to every property owner’s new preliminary full value assessment.

The Town of Ogden’s last reassessment was conducted in 2018. While the town was on a schedule of reassessing every four years, unusual market growth prompted a delay of the reassessment for the 2022 and 2023 assessment roll years.

A townwide reassessment by itself does not increase taxes or create more tax dollars. Instead, it increases the equalization rate to 100% of market value and redistributes the tax burden to ensure property owners are paying a fair and accurate share of property taxes. Assessing at 100% market value is not only easier to understand but it also allows taxpayers to take full advantage of exemptions like the STAR program and veterans exemptions.

The Assessment Disclosure Notices are for comparison purposes only. It compares your prior year taxes to

what they would have been had your 2024 assessment been in place. Your tax liability will be affected by several factors, including changes to school/ county/municipal budgets, changes to assessments of other properties, changes to exemptions and/or exemption savings amounts applicable to your property and apportionment of school and/or county taxes among multiple municipal segments.

As property owners receive their notices in the mail, they are reminded to focus on the full market value estimate. If you do not agree with this estimate and can offer proof for a change, you can follow the process of submitting an informal review. Instructions will be included with each notice indicating the procedure for submitting an informal review and where to get additional information.

4-H brings agricultural literacy to schools

Monroe County 4-H is bringing the nation-wide event Agricultural Literacy Month to Monroe County students again this year thanks to the support of Monroe County Farm Bureau and New York State Agriculture in the Classroom. This special event includes a book reading by a volunteer, and an educational, hands-on activity to connect students to agriculture.

This year’s book is I LOVE Strawberries! by Shannon Anderson. The book follows an ambitious young gardener, Jolie, as she learns how to grow strawberries for the first time, which she discovers is both challenging and rewarding. The activity following the reading is a fun and interactive way for the students to learn how strawberry plants grow.

Letchworth’s 2024 Maple Weekends

Letchworth State Park will be the sweet spot of New York’s maple heartland on Maple Weekends. Maple Weekends are statewide on March 16, March 17, March 23, and March 24. Volunteers with the Friends of Letchworth State Park will be working the griddles at the nature center, making pancakes and sausages. Watch Letchworth State Park’s official social media, @letchworthstatepark on Facebook and Instagram, for posts when pancake breakfast tickets go on sale. Pancake breakfast tickets benefit the Friends of Letchworth’s preservation and improvement projects in the park. All syrup making activities are free. Even sweeter, this year is NYS Parks’ centennial, the 100th birthday of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. To mark this 100th anniversary, Letchworth’s mapling team is using exactly 100 taps on the park’s maple trees. Aluminum buckets, plastic buckets, tubing lines, bags, even a DIY milk jug are all in play. At Maple Weekends, attendees can see them all in action and help collect sap.

Letchworth State Park’s maple syrup will be for sale at the nature center. To mark each batch made in NYS Parks’ centennial year, each bottle of syrup will have a unique centennial sticker.

Wreaths Across America (WAA), in collaboration with the Library of Congress Veterans History Project (VHP), is launching a new, free webinar series for educators. These quarterly webinars aim to equip educators and youth of all ages with the vast resources available from the Library of Congress and will focus on how teachers and students can participate in collecting, preserving, and sharing veterans’ stories critical to our nation’s history and the teaching of the next generation about the value of freedom.

The series will kick off on Tuesday, March 19, at 4 p.m. and be co-hosted by Cindy Tatum, Wreaths Across America Curriculum Developer and Gold Star Mother, and Andrew Huber, Senior Liaison, Library of Congress Veterans History Project. Later dates for the remaining webinars in the series include May 14, August, and October to be announced. Calling Public Hearing to Authorize Temporary No Parking Prohibitions

WHEREAS, the Town Board of the Town of Sweden may, by resolution, establish temporary “no parking” prohibitions for specific streets, or parts thereof, for events or other occurrences where the Town Board finds such restrictions to be reasonable and necessary to protect public safety; and

WHEREAS, the Town Board of the Town of Sweden has been advised by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and other governmental agencies that traffic during the “Eclipse Event” on April 8, 2024 is predicted to be heavier than at any other known date with potentially hundreds of thousands of visitors in the general vicinity; and

WHEREAS, the safety of Town residents and visitors is in part dependent upon the ability of emergency vehicles to traverse the streets and roads within the Town; and

WHEREAS, the Town Board of the Town of Sweden, in order to facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles through the Town on April 8, 2024, desires to prohibit parking on specific Town-owned streets and roads for the 24-hour period 12:01 am April 8, 2024 to 11:59 pm April 8, 2024; and

WHEREAS, a public hearing is necessary in order for the Town Board of the Town of Sweden to adopt said temporary parking prohibitions.

Forty-four students inducted into Hilton Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society

Merton Williams Middle School inducted 44 students into the Hilton Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) during a ceremony held February 15 at Hilton High School.

Principal Marc D’Amico welcomed audience members and addressed the inductees, focusing on one of the characteristics of the NJHS – character. “Show your character every day,” he said. “Look for opportunities to stand up and be a better person. And never stop finding the courage to do the right thing.”

NJHS inductees Bianca Domingues Umbrino and Bryce Warren gave the history of the National Junior Honor Society. Then Anelise Mott, Brody Tydings, Lucas Childs, Macie DeGraeve, Natalie Jarzembowski, Olivia Kuzmanovski, Dakota Antoniou, Lucas Grizzanti, Camryn Griffee, and Samantha Jarvie described the five characteristics of membership – scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character – and participated in the candle-lighting ceremony.

Advisors Kirsten Meyers and Anastasia Stamoulacatos spoke about each inductee’s accomplishments as they stood before the audience, then signed the registry, shook hands with administrators, and received their pin and a special cookie.

To be invited to apply for membership into the National Junior Honor Society, students must first hold an average of 95 percent for the first three marking periods of seventh grade. The rigorous application process includes completing 15 hours of community service, proof of participation in leadership experiences, a personal letter of interest for consideration, and letters of recommendation.

As the keynote, Todd Scaccia, physical education teacher, told the inductees that to be good leaders, they must persevere. “Not every journey will be smooth and you’ll face obstacles along the way. But remember, it’s okay to stumble,” he said. “What matters is how you get back up and keep moving forward.”

At the end of the ceremony, the new inductees handed their parents personal letters of thanks.

New non-invasive cultivars include Buddleia

When I saw that Buddleia was one of the “Plants of the Year” chosen by the National Garden Bureau for 2024, I was surprised. Buddleia, with its lovely, cascading, sweetly scented flowers, is a butterfly, insect and hummingbird magnet. But Buddleia is on the invasive species list of plants to avoid because in some places this non-native’s aggressive nature can cause environmental and economic harm.

The National Garden Bureau answered these concerns in a recent article on their website entitled, “New Plant Cultivars: The Secret Weapon in the Fight Against Invasive Species.”

Plant breeders are now offering sterile cultivars of plant species deemed invasive or aggressive, the NGB says. This means the plants produce no or very few seeds, but nectar production is not reduced.

The National Garden Bureau notes that past “sterile” cultivars such as the Bradford pear, may not have been self-fertile, but they managed to cross-pollinate with wild species, which resulted in fertile fruit and fields filled with invasive seedling forests.

Recent breeding efforts ensure that sterile cultivars don’t cross-pollinate and spread, the NGB article explains. “These stringent requirements resulted in inter-specific hybrids that don’t face the same restrictions in states where invasive species are banned. Hybrids can be sold in these states if they’ve been trialed and shown to produce less than two percent viable seed.”

This is interesting news for gardeners who enjoy plants like Buddleia, and who have desired to grow the plant, but are concerned about its invasive tendencies.

The National Garden Bureau says these new cultivars make celebrating the Year of the Buddleia possible. New sterile cultivars include members of the Buddleia Cascade Collection - ‘Violet Cascade’, ‘Grand Cascade’, ‘Lilac Cascade’, and ‘Pink Cascade II’, all of which have produced no observed seed set in four years of trials. The plants are hardy in USDA zones 5 through 10. Also included are members of the Buddleia Chrysalis™ Series, which are great for con-

tainers and have a compact mounding habit. Colors include white, cranberry, blue, pink, and purple. This series is hardy in USDA zones 5a through 9a.

In their 2024 Year of the Buddleia Fact Sheet, the NGB states vendors have also marketed the following cultivars as “non-invasive”: Flutterby Petite® Blue Heaven (Star Roses and Plants), Lo & Behold® Series (Proven Winners) and ‘Miss Molly’ and ‘Miss Ruby’ (Proven Winners).

The National Garden Bureau says Buddleia that are left unpruned can potentially only produce blooms in its canopy. To encourage blooms throughout the plant, prune the plants

in spring after new growth appears. Cut the shrub back to just above new leaf buds. As Buddleia tend to leaf-out late, make sure you wait before you attempt to prune. Also, avoid planting Buddleia in the fall, as it can experience winter damage. It needs time to establish strong roots and winter hardiness.

The National Garden Bureau also explains that Buddleia is a symbol of resurrection, re-birth and new beginnings. In post World War II Europe, for example, Buddleia was known to come back to life even in the midst of debris, giving people a sign of hope.

GVAS celebrates 60 years of service

The Gates Volunteer Ambulance Service (GVAS) turned 60 years old on Friday, February 23, 2024. A lot has happened in the last 60 years since ambulance service was started in the Town of Gates.

The need for an ambulance service in the Gates heightened in the late 1950s and early 1960s during the town’s transition from a rural, agriculture area into a suburban community. Preceding the founding of the Gates Volunteer Ambulance Service (GVAS) on February 23, 1964, ambulance transportation in Gates was provided by hospitals (the St. Mary’s Hospital Ambulance, for example) or from commercial ambulance firms. The response times and the expense were the often-voiced reasons for establishing an ambulance service for the town.

The Gates-Chili News reported that the physicians hailed the proposal as a step in the direction of better health and safety for town residents.

Gates Volunteer Ambulance Service (GVAS) was officially founded in 1964 to serve the emergency needs of the residents of the Town of Gates. In March of 2014, GVAS and Spencerport Ambulance merged to become one larger agency. To date, GVAS has grown to over 100 volunteer and career members with a fleet of 12 vehicles and 1 UTV housed out of 3 stations. GVAS now covers a district of over 52 square miles with its headquarters located at 1001

In celebration of the return of maple sugaring season in New York State, Genesee Country Village & Museum in Mumford will host its annual Maple Sugar Festival on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, March 15-17 and March 22-24.
