Thanks to more than 930,000 daily screens submitted over the past two months, the region’s ROC COVID symptom tracker is now able to share trend data on the prevalence of COVID-19 symptoms.

The news, at least for now, is good. For the past month, symptom reports have remained at one percent, down from two percent in early May when the project launched.

The symptom rate is based on answers to a daily ROC COVID text or email asking if participants are experiencing a fever, a cough, chills or other coronavirus symptoms.

As of July 23, more than 23,800 residents had signed up for the daily screening tool, which aims to detect COVID-19 hotspots before the virus spreads.

The low level of reported symptoms indicates that residents are doing all the right things in our region, according to public health officials. People are wearing masks, continuing to physically distance, and washing hands frequently.

“We are still learning a lot about this pandemic. The more data we collect, the better we will understand how to prevent the spread of the virus in our region,” said Dr. Michael Mendoza, commissioner of public health for Monroe County. “The release of the ROC COVID trend data is a milestone, and I truly hope it encourages even more people to make the symptom tracker a small part of their daily routine.”

Along with the symptom rate, public health officials rely on test results, hospitalizations, intensive care usage, and other measures to monitor and respond to the virus. These indicators are critical for ensuring adequate resources and contact tracing, but there is an inevitable lag between when a person starts to feel unwell and when they get tested or end up in the hospital.

That’s where symptom tracking steps in. ROC COVID aims to detect a rise in COVID-19 cases sooner than is possible by testing alone.

“We have said all along that slowing the spread of COVID-19 is going to take a community effort,” said Monroe County Executive Adam Bello. “While it is still early

and much of this data is preliminary, these results are further proof that Monroe County and Finger Lakes residents have come together to flatten the curve and ensure that our healthcare resources are not stretched beyond their capacity. But our work is not yet complete, and widespread regional participation in the ROC COVID symptom tracker remains a critical piece in our efforts to mitigate the impact of the virus.”

ROC COVID is “a watchtower for coronavirus,” said Wade Norwood, chief executive officer of Common Ground Health, the region’s health research and planning organization.

“If you see smoke, you don’t wait until the forest is in flames to call for help. When we see symptoms, the goal is to direct public

health resources such as testing and education to neighborhoods at risk before the virus spreads.”

SUNYAC suspends fall season of competition In response to ongoing health and safety concerns, the members of the State University of New York Athletic Conference will suspend fall sports competition. In addition, the winter conference and non-conference schedules will be delayed until January 1, 2021.

The decision was made by the SUNYAC Presidents in consultation with the SUNYAC Board of Directors on Monday, July 20. The SUNYAC Board of Directors is composed of the 10 directors of athletics from each member institution

Despite these changes for Brockport athletics this fall, the campus community recognizes the importance of athletics participation to its student-athletes. Administrators and coaches have developed plans to engage student-athletes safely in small-group activity through in-person practices and instruction, strength and conditioning training, leadership training, and team building activities. All students on campus will also have access to recreational and wellness opportunities, and the fitness facilities will be available in accordance with all New York

State guidelines and campus protocols.

“The decision to suspend fall sports was made with the safety and well-being of our student-athletes and campus community top of mind,” said SUNY Brockport President Heidi Macpherson. “Sports, like our fine arts performances, are part of the fabric of college life, and I know how disappointing this must be to our players, coaches, staff, and our fans. But we will get through this, and I look forward to the day when we can again cheer for our Golden Eagles.”

Vine Medical primary care practice now open in Brockport

by Tami Raco Vine Medical, the office of Dr. Alex Fahoury, began taking new patients right before the pandemic hit. The office hoped to have its grand opening celebration in early spring, but that was not possible. Despite not having the official opening celebration, Vine Medical saw more than 100 patients in its first two weeks. The office was not fully set up to process insurance claims at first, so Vine Medical offered their patients complimentary visits until the insurance billing system was in place. Many came to the office after recognizing Dr. Fahoury from his extensive experience in the community.

Dr. Alex Fahoury was born in Cairo, Egypt, and at a young age, his father instilled in him that he had the gift to become a doctor. Having several physicians in his family and growing up in a poor culture, he saw the reward of working in medicine to help people. During the 1970s, Fahoury attended a Catholic school where the nuns would also act in the capacity of nurses.

He recalls the meticulous care the nuns would give in their nursing of wounds and illness. Those experiences helped cultivate a strong sense of appreciation for caring for others.

In 1995 Dr. Fahoury completed his medical degree in Cairo. He and his wife Nora moved to the United States in 1997. He completed his residency at Penn State University Hershey Campus, which provided

him with some of the most advanced medical training in the U.S. as well as hands-on experience in a fast-paced level 1 trauma unit. Dr. Fahoury went on to practice internal medicine for more than 20 years, providing medical care to the Spencerport, Brockport, and Albion communities for nearly 15 of those years.

In 2005 Dr. Fahoury started Rochester General’s Hospitalist program. In 2007 he was the Hospitalist Director and President of the Medical Staff at Lakeside Hospital.

In 2014 he instituted the primary care program for Strong West and was the Site Director at UR Brockport, as well as a physician for the Rochester VA clinic.

Dr. Fahoury, his wife Nora, who is the office manager, and their three children live in the Spencerport area. Nurse Cindy Newlands has worked with Dr. Fahoury for more than seven years. Dr. Fahoury’s extensive experience in patient care allows him to treat complex medical conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, heart diseases and conditions, pulmonary disease, dementia, and women’s health issues. He is also certified in drug addiction management. His goal is to keep patients from having to go to the emergency room if not medically necessary. Fahoury has had great success in treating COVID-19 patients and helping patients recover from the comfort of their homes.

RULES

1. Limit one entry per week per household for answers to questions printed below. No limit on entries submitted with a receipt for purchase or estimate for services as described above.

2. All entries must be submitted in individual envelopes. All envelopes must have a return address on the front of the envelope including name of entrant. Entries submitted with a receipt must say “RECEIPT” on the envelope. Entries submitted with an estimate for service must say “ESTIMATE” on envelope. Numerous entries submitted in one envelope will count as only one entry.

AGAIN FOR THIS EDITION

Your choice of businesses to select from will be limited. Commencing with the May 2005 contest winners, we are limiting the certificate total for the next year from any particular business to the total spent on advertising by that business in the Hometown Community Directory for that year.
