Snow shoe adventures

Through the On the Canals program, the Village of Brockport has been able to purchase snow shoes and winter trekking poles in a variety of weight limits and is offering free snow shoe adventures along the Erie Canal. Excursions are scheduled for 10 a.m. on January 1; 1 p.m. on January 15, 28, and February 25; and 10 a.m. on February 19, 20, and 23. It is suitable for beginners of any age and fitness level.

Registration is required. Reserve equipment by picking the appropriate weight ticket. This will ensure that the snow shoes will be available and easy to manage. There is some leeway, but if using snow shoes rated at a lower weight, one will sink more in the snow and therefore expend more energy. Those with their own equipment can sign up for that ticket.

Meet at the Welcome Center, 11 Water Street, Brockport, where there is municipal parking and bathrooms. Participants will be traveling along the canal starting at the Main Street lift bridge parking area and traveling west and then turn around and return to the beginning. The route is about 1.5 to 2 miles and should take 90 minutes to two hours to complete. If there is not enough snow for snowshoeing, the excursion will be a hike instead. Please don’t bring pets.

On Wednesday, December 21, the Brockport JV and Varsity basketball teams received

(Class of 2018). The Odey brothers started their business, “Only They Know” clothing brand, in 2020. Varsity Coach Erbland is very proud of the brothers for giving back to their fellow Blue Devils. Erbland was their basketball coach while they were students at Brockport HS. He asked them to speak to the basketball team about their experience as past basketball players for Brockport. They said, “Your time here goes by so fast. You have to give it your all. You have to always be positive even if you lose a game, learn from it and move forward, support your teammates.” The brothers have also donated apparel to a few of the other sport teams. Plein air painting along the canal

Through the On the Canals program, the Village of Brockport purchased French half box easels, oil paints, and supplies for plein air painting along the canal. Local artist and gallery owner Sarah Hart will lead the free workshops which will be held every Saturday in February

from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. These are ticketed events with limited space per workshop for those age 15 and up.

All levels of artists are welcome. If you’ve ever wanted to experience what it’s like to paint outdoors or are a seasoned artist seeking to hone your skills, this is a great opportunity.

Meet at Hart Gallery 27, 27 Market Street, Brockport. Before leaving the gallery, participants will learn how to set up an easel, how to pack it with supplies, and see a simple landscape paint demo. The group will then go outside, along the canal, to set up and paint landscapes. The program will conclude back at the gallery to warm up, clean up, review work, and see a slideshow on winter landscape painters.

Spencerport Rotary holding Trivia Night fundraiser

Spencerport Rotary is holding a Trivia Night on Tuesday January 17, at Pinewood Country Club, 1189 Ogden Parma Townline Road, Spencerport. Doors open at 5 p.m. and trivia starts at 6 p.m.

Register a team of four members to participate. There are a limited number of tables. The entry fee is $10 per player/$40 per team.

AARP Tax-Aide offers free tax return prep

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide will be providing in-person tax return preparation free of charge, with a focus on taxpayers who are over age 50 and have low to moderate income. Tax-Aide volunteers are trained and IRS-certified every year to make sure they know about and understand the latest changes and additions to the tax code.

Hilton High School honors Hispanic and French Honor Society inductees

In a ceremony held the evening of December 1 at Hilton High School auditorium, 25 students were inducted into the Hispanic Honor Society and French Honor Society. “Our goal in creating a Hilton chapter of these honor societies was to recognize this prestigious group of students who has shown a deep interest in other languages and cultures,” said Michele Ariola, Hispanic Honor Society advisor.

To qualify, students must maintain an 88 percent average or higher in their high school language courses and complete an application that includes a personal statement addressing why they wish to be considered for admission, as well as their thoughts about the importance of knowing another language and understanding other cultures.

The Hispanic Honor Society was founded by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in 1953, for the students of North American secondary schools. The society’s motto is “Todos a Una” which means “All together or “All as one.”

The French Honor Society was founded by the American Association of the Teachers of French in 1949. The society’s motto is “L’homme qui sait deux langues en vaut deux” which means, “Someone who knows two languages is worth two people.”

Principal Dr. Jeffrey Green called the inductees’ names and they lit candles one by one before reciting

the oaths of the Hispanic and French Honor Societies. The candles represent the promise to use French and Spanish to promote international friendship, service and unity within the school and community; and symbolize the efforts to better oneself, one’s school and one’s community.

“As an International Baccalaureate school and district, we embrace the opportunity to be globalminded in our studies and in our appreciation of others,” said Green.

The Town of Sweden has a vacancy on its Zoning Board of Appeals.

The five-member board has the duty of granting or denying variances of the Sweden Town Code. Members serve fiveyear terms and meet as needed, generally six evenings per year. Stop the Violence Education Fair planned for January 9

Uniting and Healing Through Hope of Monroe County is holding a community event that is designed to bring an abundance of resources to area residents by offering a one-stop educational and vocational training opportunity fair. Visitors can look forward to talking one-on-one with educators and instructors eager to help provide a path for the next step in higher education or developing skills in a variety of vocational training fields.

The Stop the Violence Educational Fair will be held on Monday, January 9, from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. at the Blue Cross Arena. All high school and college students as well as adults are invited to attend this free event.

All higher education, vocational training providers, and businesses are encouraged to participate and to contact Uniting and Healing Through Hope via its website. Groups of students traveling on district buses from city and area school districts are welcome. School districts are asked to register on the website and select a two hour time slot to attend.

Veterans honored in Riga on Wreaths Across America Day

Saturday, December 17, marked Riga’s third year participating in National Wreaths Across America Day. The day’s events started at Riga Cemetery at 11 a.m. Shaun Smith, his daughter Macey, and Girl Scout Troop 60487 performed a ceremony and presented the eight ceremonial wreaths. Ben Wermuth rounded out the ceremony by playing Taps. At the conclusion, 95 wreaths were laid in honor of the veterans buried there, some dating back to the Revolutionary War.

The event moved to Creekside Cemetery at noon for a ceremony delivered by Harvey C. Noone Post 954 Post Commander and retired Army Colonel Ken Juergens. The ceremonial wreaths were presented by active duty military members and Girl Scout Troop 60487. Mae Ennis performed a rendition of “A Soldier’s Christmas Gift” that touched the hearts of many in attendance. Taps was played by Adam Sargent and Robert Wilkinson to conclude this ceremony.

A total of 489 wreaths were placed by the many community members who came out. When a volunteer places a wreath on a veteran’s grave on National Wreaths Across America Day, they are encouraged to speak that veteran’s name aloud, thank them for their service and sacrifice, and reflect on that person and their life.

The New York State Division of Consumer Protection offers the following tips to keep families safe and warm this winter.

When temperatures plummet, home heating systems may run constantly and the potential for carbon monoxide poisoning increases. During and after dangerous weather, using alternative sources of power can also cause CO to build up in the home.

Carbon Monoxide Dangers and Safety Tips:

•Install carbon monoxide alarms. Have a carbon monoxide alarm on every floor and outside sleeping areas.

•Inspect all fuel-burning equipment every year. Have a trained service technician inspect your home heating systems. Make sure that all gas heaters are properly vented to the outside.

•Use generators safely. Do not use a gas or electric generator in a home, garage, basement, or any enclosed space. Plug in appliances to the generator using only individual heavy-duty, outdoor-rated electrical cords. When used, gas generators should be located at least 20 feet from any window, door, or vent – preferably in a space where rain and snow does not reach them.

•Avoid build-up of carbon monoxide fumes. Open the fireplace damper before lighting a fire and keep it open until the

ashes are cool. Never use a gas range, oven, or grill to warm up a home. Never leave a vehicle running while parked in a garage attached to a home, even if the windows are open. Have vehicles’ mufflers and tailpipes checked on a regular basis to prevent accidental CO build-up.

•Keep furnace and dryer vents clear of ice and snow. Check furnace and dryer vents on the exterior of your house during and after heavy snowfalls, and clear snow away from the vents’ openings if it builds up. When a furnace or gas dryer vent is blocked, carbon monoxide can build up inside the home, and on newer furnaces, the system may shut off completely as a safety measure leaving the home without heat. While electric dryers do not pose a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, a blocked vent could still be a fire hazard.

•If one suspects carbon monoxide poisoning, they should get to fresh air immediately and then call 911.

Heating Assistance:

New York’s Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) can help eligible New Yorkers heat their homes. The program provides up to $1,126 to eligible homeowners and renters depending on income, household size, and how they heat their home. Administered by the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, applications for HEAP are accepted at local departments of social services in person or by telephone,

with funding provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents outside of New York City may also apply online for regular heating assistance benefits at https://mybenefits. ny.gov/mybenefits/begin. To qualify for benefits, a family of four may have a maximum gross monthly income of $5,485, or an annual gross income of $65,829.

For households facing no-heat situations due to non-working heating equipment, OTDA is also accepting applications for its heating equipment repair or replacement benefit. Eligible homeowners can apply for up to $4,000 for repairs or $8,000 for replacement of a furnace, boiler, or other direct heating equipment necessary to keep the household’s primary heating source working. Additionally, eligible households can receive energy efficiency services, which include the cleaning of primary heating equipment to allow for safe and efficient operation. Thankful for community storm response efforts

I wanted to take a moment to thank our Clarkson highway crew who worked every other shift for five days keeping our roads safe throughout the winter storm, despite treacherous conditions and zero visabilty at times. They missed holiday time with family and did whatever was necessary to keep our buildings, pump stations and generators in good working order in sub-zero temperatures.

My thanks also goes out to our neighbors and partners Kevin Johnson (Town of Sweden), Margay Blackman (Village of Brockport) and especially Sean Bruno (Brockport Central Schools) who

opened and helped staff the Oliver Middle School as a warming station for residents and utility workers. In addition, to Kevin Moore our Building Inspector who assisted with the impacts of the storm and related issues at Autumn Woods and Wellington Woods.

Hawley announces distribution of free weatherization kits

Assemblyman Steve Hawley’s office is distributing free fuel weatherization kits courtesy of National Fuel Gas at select libraries in Orleans, Genesee, Monroe, and Erie counties. These kits will help New Yorkers to better afford the costs of heating their homes this winter.

“I am pleased to assist the constituents of my district to be better prepared for the winter this season,” said Hawley. “Living in this region for many years, I understand how difficult it can be to escape the temperatures of Western New York. I hope that these

kits will help to protect families from the long winter to come.”

Sweden to conduct traffic assessment in Sweden Village

The Town of Sweden has surveyed residents of Sweden Village and a common complaint is driver speed. In 2022, the NYS Legislature granted towns the authority to lower speed limits to below 30 mph. However, the legislation comes with stipulations that certain criteria must be met and certified by a professional traffic engineer.

Sweden has engaged Passero Associates to conduct the requisite

assessment and certify the results. If Sweden Village is eligible for the lower speed limit, the Town Board must create a local law, hold a public hearing and then adopt the law. Passero will be conducting field and aerial reviews of traffic in the subdivision in the coming weeks. The Town Board will share the results of the study and what actions the Town may subsequently take.

Adapted for the stage by William Glennon, this version of Hansel and Gretel tells the story of White Bird and the Gnome who fall under the spell of the Wicked Witch and are forced to lure children deep into the forest so that the Witch can eat them. When Hansel and Gretel’s father returns home without food or money, the whole family goes berry picking. They become lost in the

woods where they encounter the White Bird and the Gnome. Hungry and tired, the White Bird and Gnome bring the children to the Witch’s delectable cottage made entirely from candy and cake. There the exciting and often-comical adventure ensues.

DMV extends validity of commercial learner permit

To build on the state’s efforts to reduce barriers and support the commercial driver industry amid a national driver shortage, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has expanded the validity of the commercial learner permit (CLP) from six months to one year. Previously, applicants were issued a CLP that was valid for 180 days with the option of renewing it for an additional 180 days. CLPs will now be valid for 365 days.

“The need for new commercial drivers is critical so we are doing all we can to facilitate the licensing of qualified applicants,” said Mark J.F. Schroeder, DMV Commissioner and Chair of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. “By extending the validity of the commercial learner permit from six months to one year, we are streamlining the process and making it easier and less costly for those who would have to renew to get on the road.”

CLP applicants issued an original document on or after December 27, 2022, will be issued a one-year permit.

Applicants who were issued a sixmonth document with an expiration date on or before June 26, 2023, will be given the option to renew their permit for an additional 180 days.

The extension of the CLP validity is just one of the many steps the state has taken to address the shortage of commercial and school bus drivers. Other measures include authorizing third parties to offer the Commercial Driver License (CDL) road test, opening new CDL Driver Testing sites and removing the 14-day waiting period between the permit test and the road test.

•Harris, Bonnie Jean Armendinger Lippa, age 80, of Springwater, died December 25, 2022 after a long battle with MS and diabetes. Bonnie is predeceased by her parents, Ernest and Helen Armendinger. Survived by her husband Howard Harris; son and daughter-in-law Todd and Lori Lippa; grandchildren, Ashley and Ryan Lippa; siblings John Armendinger (Cathy), William Armendinger (Pok), Gary Armendinger (Phyllis), David Armendinger (Barbara Martin), and Sue McElhaney (Steve); along with nieces, nephews, and other loved ones. Bonnie retired from Spencerport Schools as a teacher after 31 years. She loved participating in Ski Club where she met her husband. She never stopped talking about her zip line adventure, trips to Ireland, visiting National Parks, and winter getaways in Florida. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.

•Young, Lynda L., age 72, died December 20, 2022 after an extended battle with cancer. Lynda was born in Rochester, NY to Elsie and Donald Vink, and married her lifelong partner and best buddy Roger Young in 1971. Lynda was a graduate of Brockport High, attained a degree in Accounting from Genesee Community College, and worked for Wegmans until staying home to raise the couple’s four children. She returned to the workforce in 1993, working for Wal-Mart for 28 years, until retiring in 2021. Surviving are her beloved husband of 51 years, Roger Young; her son Josh Young and his wife Danielle, of Brooklyn, and their children Sydney, Hudson and Alexa; her daughter Vanessa Sarrazola and her husband Javier of Union City, PA and their children Samuel and Adrian; her daughter Sharalyn Stott and her husband Jason of Brockport and their children Adalyn, Kaylie and Emelia; her daughter Robin Georgiev and her husband David of Brockport and their children Malachi, Elijah, and Noah; and her sister Sally Vink and brother James Vink.

•Burrows, Barbara C., died December 23, 2022 at age 82. Predeceased by her brother, Bruce Collins; and son-in-law, Kirk Reber. Survived by her husband of 60 years, Lawrence; children, Susan Reber, Karen (Chris) Shadders, Larry (Tammy) and Bill (Nicole); grandchildren, Carson, Ben, Alex, and Lydia Reber, Mike, Jacob, Tyler and Josh Shadders, Abby (Lucas) Galbier, Gregory, Natalie and Theo Burrows; brother, Barry (Judy) Collins; sister-in-law, Karen Collins; brother-in-law, Robert (Anita) Burrows; and several nieces, nephews and dear friends. Born in Rochester, NY on August 10, 1940, to Francis X. and Marion Collins. She earned her nursing degree and began work at Rochester General Hospital as an RN. She was also an avid reader, always learning and even going back to school to earn her master’s degree in English Literature at 62 years old. Later in life, Barb also found much joy working part-time in the Produce department at the Chili-Paul Wegmans for over 20 years.

Nancy is survived by her children, Susan Johnson and Diane (Henry) Staab; her grandchildren, Kyle and Kelly Johnson, Amy (Matt) Ostrander, and Jessica (Eric) Bell; her great-grandchildren, Bryceson Johnson and Rowan Bell; her brother, Robert (Cher DeFreze) Graupman; her sister, Priscilla Graupman; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Nancy was a loan officer for First Federal Bank in Brockport for many years. She was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church as well as the Hamlin Seniors, and enjoyed volunteering for Life Solutions in Hamlin.

She was very involved in her community; also an avid gardener, a true green thumb. In her leisure, she enjoyed playing piano, painting, making beautiful artwork, and crafting.

•Zimmerman, David J., died suddenly December 22, 2022 at age 30. David enjoyed playing his guitar and throwing the football around with his brothers. He will be remembered for making it his job to make people laugh.

Catherine Ann was a retired Spencerport elementary school cafeteria employee. She prepared and served children their lunches for 20 years.

•Dostman, Elizabeth “Betty,” died December 10, 2022, one month shy of her 96th birthday. Betty Dostman was number 13 of 13 children, born to Joseph and Clara Harrington. In addition to her 12 siblings and parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Danny Dostman. Betty is survived by her loving daughter Dedi (Bill) Kuhns and her son Ralph Dostman; grandchildren, Colby (Alexandra) Kuhns, Sonya Kuhns, Alona Kuhns (Jim Beerse), Eric Dostman; great-grandchildren, Kyle Kuhns and Holden Grace Kuhns. Betty worked at Eastman Kodak Company for 25 years. She traveled to many places and visited her beloved Ireland a few times.
