It’s that time again to think about gift giving for the gardeners on your list.

Gardeners are fun to shop for because typically they are passionate about their hobby and are always happy to receive something that will add to their enjoyment of growing things.

Make sure your first place to look for gifts is locally. There are many fantastic garden centers nearby and they are so much fun to visit at Christmastime.

Many have great decorating ideas and plenty of inspiration for garden gifts.

Another benefit of shopping locally for gardening gifts is the expertise that staff can offer regarding the latest products and what works in our growing conditions.

With that in mind, here are a few ideas of items to look for at local garden centers. Watering cans are always welcome both for outdoor and indoor use. Watering cans are a very functional gift, of course, but many are very visually appealing and fun and can even add charm to the outdoor garden or inside windowsill.

Garden centers are also a great place to find a wide selection of planters, another very functional and welcome gift of which any gardener can never have enough. Check out the large selection of fairy garden accessories that are available year round. Miniatures can be used inside in terrarium and dish gardens in both summer and winter, and outside in container and fairy gardens during the growing season.

Stepping stones are a lovely garden accent, whether you are using just one or two, or are making a complete path.

Kits are available for make-your-own

stepping stones, a fun activity for gardeners during the winter months. Don’t forget about plants. Garden centers are abloom with holiday plant options as well as succulents and houseplants that can be enjoyed during the long winter months. Encourage the green thumb in your life to try something new by presenting them with the gift of a plant they have never before tried to grow, or perhaps has been off their radar. There are beautiful Christmas-tree shaped potted herbs available right now that can be used all winter for cooking and then moved outside next spring.

If the gardener on your list has it all, consider giving a gift that supports our local farmers and agriculture. Local farm markets offer apples and other produce which make beautiful and tasty gifts. We are fortunate to have many local fruit farms and wineries that offer local jams, jellies, wine, craft beers and hard ciders which make festive and welcome gifts.

Maple syrup is a local crop that supports local agriculture and is a delicious gift to share especially with gardening friends who are far away.

Finally, here are a few trending gifts that you might be able to find locally. Raging Skillet fires up CenterStage Theatre The irreverent comedy “Raging Skillet” by Jacques Lamarre, based on The Raging Skillet: The TrueLife Adventures of Chef Rossi, A Memoir with Recipes, runs Saturday, December 7 through Sunday, December 22, on Thursdays, Saturday and Sundays at CenterStage Theatre at the Jewish Community Center, 1200 Edgewood Avenue, Rochester.

Raging Skillet is one woman’s story of cooking her way through some of life’s most significant challenges in New York City’s unlikely kitchens. Talking her way into any cooking job she could get, the self-taught and self-made Rossi ended up owning one of the most sought-after catering companies in the city.

Chef Rossi grew up “orthodox light” (her family kept the meat and dairy dishes separate but ate McDonald’s fish sandwiches). A rebellious daughter, she was shipped off from her Hungarian Yiddish family to live with a Chasidic rabbi in Brooklyn. Feeling restless, Rossi broke free from religious and familial constraints to create a life of her own. What began as a revolt against the microwave turned into a quest to make food that is fearless, fun, and, most importantly, delicious.

The show is directed by Tara Wiseman, with Stephanie Roosa as Chef Rossi, Davida Bloom as her mom and Laron Spratt as DJ Skillet.

Performances are at 7 p.m. on Thursdays, 8 p.m. on Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays. There will be a Meet and Greet Book Signing on December 7, 21 and 22, and a Post-Show Talk Back and Signing with Rossi after the show on Sunday, December 8. Open Captioning available for performances on Sunday, December 15, and Thursday, December 19. Tickets are $33, $29 JCC members, $20 students.

newsmakers Brockport native Ashton Scott helped guide the Wesleyan University football team to one of its best seasons in the 137-year history of the program and was named 2019 All-NESCAC. Scott was named to the Second Team Offense in his first year as a starter. The sophomore quarterback led the NESCAC in completion percentage (61.3) and ranked second in pass efficiency (150.0), third in passing touchdowns (17), fourth in passing yards (215.4 ypg), and fifth in total offense (243.2 ypg). He was 147 of 240 for 1,939 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, and only three interceptions. Scott also rushed 109 times for 250 yards and one score to finish third on the team in rushing. He was named the NESCAC Player of the Week once this season.
