Improve lives. Save lives.

The problem today

Honest situation

1 in 2 people will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime.

This year alone, nearly 10,000 people across South Yorkshire will receive the devastating news that they have cancer. Today over 57,000 are living with the disease close to our home.

Cancer touches every family.

The problem today

Honest situation

A cancer diagnosis is not just devastating for the person who receives it, but the impact affects the whole family. The people of South Yorkshire are both more likely to suffer from cancer and more likely to die from cancer sooner.

What we need to do and why now

We must, we can, improve the way we identify and treat cancer here.

We want the people of South Yorkshire – our wives and sons, our daughters and fathers, our husbands and partners, our family, friends and colleagues – to get the very best treatment and care following a cancer diagnosis.

We want them to know they are in the best hands and have the very best treatment and technology at their disposal at Weston Park Cancer Centre in Sheffield.

see it. treat it. appeal

We want to bring a breakthrough MRI simulator cancer scanning machine to Weston Park Cancer Centre, but we need your help.

With its exceptional body imagining capabilities, the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanning machine has become a powerful tool to help more precisely define areas of the body affected by cancer. Our dedicated oncologists will be able to see tumours more accurately and faster, to plan more targeted treatments, with fewer side effects. This will change futures. More people close to us will have more precise scans and treatments sooner.

In 2025, Weston Park Cancer Charity celebrates its 30th anniversary of supporting Weston Park Hospital, the only specialist cancer hospital serving South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, and North Nottinghamshire.

Over the past three decades, the charity has funded research, treatment, and care, benefiting thousands of patients. A new opportunity to bring an advanced cancer scanner to Sheffield to help improve lives and save lives is now here.

Help see cancer more clearly and target treatments more precisely. Improve lives. Save lives.

Our Target is to raise £1.85m to purchase and install this new MRI cancer treatment planning machine at Weston Park Cancer Centre, which will transform cancer treatment in our region.

The need The benefit

“Magnetic Resonance (MR) simulation will revolutionise our approach to cancer treatments. By improving the accuracy in targeting cancer, heightens confidence-potential to reduce treatment volumes, reduce side effects and improves quality of life.

A dedicated MR SIM immediately provides a direct benefit and equitable care for cancer patients. A recent development in treatment of prostate cancer using SABR (Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy) meant that radiotherapy can be reduced from 20 treatment sessions to 5 for suitable patients, reducing hospital visits by 75%. MR simulation is a pre-requisite for such SABR treatments.”

Weston Park Cancer Centre urgently needs an MRI Simulator to enhance cancer treatment.

This advanced machine provides superior scans, allowing for more precise targeting of cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue. Currently, the nearest MRI Simulator dedicated to cancer is in Leeds. Bringing this life-saving technology to our region is crucial.

Patients:

Improved targeting means more effective treatment with fewer side effects and fewer hospital visits.

Staff:

Attracts and retains top medical talent, offering opportunities for professional growth of the NHS services.

Community:

Enhances local healthcare, ensuring our families and friends receive the best care close to home.

Research:

Provides exciting opportunities for cancer research in adaptive radiotherapy – the future of precision medicine by utilising advanced technology.

Your place within the dream

This new simulator scanner will provide more clarity to ‘see it.’ and more precision to improve cancer radiotherapy to ‘treat it.’, changing lives and saving lives.

30 years ago, Weston Park Cancer Charity was set up to raise funds for a new cancer scanner. Scientific advances have moved on and now we need your help to bring new insights, new approaches and new technology to Sheffield, as soon as we can.

Improve lives. Save lives.

“A Magnetic Resonance Simulator will directly benefit patients who need radiotherapy treatment. It will allow us to provide state of the art radiotherapy by better targeting of the cancer and minimising dose to surrounding organs. This really is a crucial step to allow us to deliver high precision radiotherapy. The introduction of this new MR-SIM will help our teams to continue developing more effective ways of treating our patients”.

Your place within the dream

This will be revolutionary

Only five cancer centres in the country have a dedicated cancer MRI simulator scanner such as this. We want the next to be here in South Yorkshire next year to help people as close to home, as soon as possible. To make this happen, Weston Park Cancer Charity needs to raise £1.85m.

Our aim is for the first patient to receive treatment in 2026.
