FOR THE PAST 30 YEARS, THE WESTON community has served as the driving force behind the Harvest Drive. It started in 2002 as a simple canned good drive at Country Isles Elementary School with children donating food to help families in need within the school.

While the Harvest Drive’s signature event remains its annual holiday food drive – which provides a full Thanksgiving meal and week’s worth of groceries to more than 2,400 families throughout Broward County – Harvest Drive has now expanded into a year-round effort to help combat hunger.

The City of Weston has stepped up to help provide for neighbors in need with an ongoing Community Collection effort.

“Since COVID-19 first impacted Broward County (and our country) Harvest Drive saw a tremendous increase of families that are food insecure, and the number has not declined,” said Denise BarrettMiller, director of communications for the City of Weston. “They asked for our assistance and, of course, we said ‘Yes.’ This is where we have a reach within the community with our social media and newsletter and Weston residents always step-up when the need is great.”

Barrett-Miller says the Weston community has heeded the call and been very generous in its sup- port. Noting that hunger is a year-round issue, she encourages residents to drop off donations at one of the Community Collection bins conveniently located throughout Weston. There is one at City Hall, BSO Fire Station 81 (public entrance is off Royal Palm Boulevard) and the Weston Community Center.

Harvest Drive uses these donations to supplement the care packages it provides to food insecure families. There is an urgent need for healthy and hearty non-perishable items such as canned tuna and chicken, oatmeal, cereal, pancake mix, pasta, macaroni & cheese, peanut butter, canned fruit and applesauce.
