Back To School

Class is back in session at Weston University. This year’s students were not even born when the civic education program started 21 years ago. Throughout the seven-month program, selected high school students learn about municipal government through a combination of classroom instruction and real-world experiences.

Mayor Margaret Brown, City Manager Don Decker and City Attorney Jamie Alan Cole led the first program day which focused on Weston’s history and an overview of City operations. The curriculum also exposes students to law enforcement services, fire and EMS services, planning and zoning, community services and more. The hands-on program culminates with students partaking in a simulated City Commission meeting.

Going Green

In an effort to reduce our carbon footprint, the City of Weston has rolled out its first all-electric vehicle. You may soon see members of the Public Works department driving around town in Ford F150 Lightning trucks to perform their daily duties. To help residents go green, the City is also installing EV charging stations for public use at Weston Regional and Vista Parks through an agreement with FPL. This is all part of the City’s ongoing sustainability efforts, which also include installing energy-efficient LED parking lot lighting at all city facilities, hosting annual household hazardous waste and electronics recycling events, and maintaining a dense tree canopy – about 240 acres – to help reduce air and water pollution by increasing oxygen production and reducing surface runoff.

Checkmate

Weston Mayor Margaret Brown and Commissioners Mary Molina-Macfie and Henry Mead were on hand to greet participants when Weston hosted the Mayors’ Chess Challenge. More than 200 chess players of all ages and skill levels gathered at the Weston Community Center to enjoy a friendly game or two.

The Mayors’ Chess Challenge was created by the City of Sunrise to support scholastic chess. It now takes place in different Broward County cities throughout the school year. The next event will be November 12th in Miramar.
