Good value in a cozy setting at Nico’s Chicken N

ico’s Chicken, a cozy, comfortable, reasonably priced Peruvian restaurant at 137 Irving Ave., serves more than just chicken.

It opened in February 2009 with a limited menu of strictly chicken dishes, but because customers came in asking for more, that menu has since been expanded to include a cornucopia of Peruvian specialties.

Mother and daughter Saida and Barbara Oshiro of Port Chester are continuing the restaurant tradition started by the Oshiro family at that location 19 years ago. The restaurant was then Acuario, which moved to North Main Street in February 2007 while continuing to do business for a time at this address as well. Once the new location took off, this one closed and, following some renovations, reopened as Nico’s Chicken.

“We were starting something new with the whole chicken theme,” said Barbara Oshiro, 33, who came to this country from Peru when she was 9 years old. She went to Our Lady of Mercy School, Port Chester

(a mixed platter of grilled Anticuchos, Rachi (omassum, a compartment of the cow’s stomach), Pancita (pork stomach) and Choncholi (beef tripe) at $13. Barbara also recommends the Lomo Saltado, strips of sirloin sautéed with onions and tomatoes served over fries with a side of rice at $9, Tallarines Verdes con Bistec o Pollo a la Parrilla (linguini in a pesto sauce with grilled steak or chicken and Papa a la Huancaina (potato in a spicy cheese sauce), all for $13, and Chaufa Mixto de Carne y Pollo (mixed chicken and beef Peruvian style with fried rice at $10).

High School for one year and graduated from Greenwich High School. She also noted that Nico is short for Nicholas, her father.

Saida and Nicholas Oshiro came to Port Chester from the port city of Callao, Peru—near Lima—in 1986 and, already experienced restaurateurs in their native country, opened some of the first Peruvian restaurants in Port Chester. Saida founded Acuario #1 in 1990 which was taken over by son Eduardo in 2001 and renovated. Barbara served as waitress and manager of that restaurant. Acuario #2 opened on Valentine’s Day 2007.

Renewal of the lease on Irving Avenue was uncertain which led to securing the North Main Street space when it became available.

“We’re back to the old menu,” said Barbara this week.

“We only started with chicken, but people were used to the old, so we are back to the old menu again.”

That old menu includes Peruvian specialties like Pollo a la Brasa ($6-15), seafood and grilled specialties like Anticuchos (beef heart skewers at $9) and Parrillada Mixta

daily specials.

Besides the menu, 5-7 specials are listed on a standing blackboard each night and the same number of lunch specials is offered daily for $7.50 from 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. In addition, smaller portions of five dishes and two sandwiches can be ordered for lunch during those hours priced at $6-7. These include Arroz con Camarones/ Mariscos (Peruvian style paella with assorted seafood or shrimp at $7), Seafood de Pescado/ Mixto (mixed fish and seafood ceviche at $7), and Sandwich de Pollo (rotisserie chicken sandwich served with fries at $6). You can get these with soup or salad and soda for $7.50. If you buy six, kept track of on a punch card, you get the seventh lunch free.

A Back to School Special is currently being offered where you get a whole Pollo a la Brasa with two sides for $12 instead of the usual $15. Sides include your choice of French fries, salad, green plantains, beans, fried yucca, rice, mixed vegetables and sweet plantains.

Barbara, who grew up in the restaurant business and is fluent

in both English and Spanish, said she does most of the managing at Nico’s (she also waits tables as needed) while her mother could step into the kitchen at any point and make any of the items on the menu. In fact, she trained chefs Javier Santana and Alejandro Urbina, both of Port Chester, and all of the recipes are hers.

Barbara loves food and dealing with people and chose to return to restaurant management after going to college for international business. “It’s all I know,” she said.

Simple décor You walk into Nico’s Chicken, which seats 32, and feel right at home. It’s small, tables are nicely spaced, not at all crowded, and you can talk or even work while you eat without being disturbed or intruded upon.

The most comfortable place to sit is on the red banquettes along the left wall. Otherwise the silver metal chairs, the same used at some outdoor dining spaces, are fairly uncomfortable.

Tables are topped with beige cloths covered with white paper.

There’s also a small counter with two stools for those eating alone.

Walls are painted pastel colors—yellow, blue and green on top with dark stained wood on the bottom. Two framed prints of chickens decorate the walls besides unusual silver square lights at various intervals and a large screen TV. Large beige ceramic tiles cover the floor.

To create added interest in the room, an open wooden structure was built outside the bathrooms.

I had the beef soup ($8), a tasty concoction served in a large white bowl on a square plate.

The beef broth flavored with cilantro and other herbs and spices contained chunks of beef, noodles, chopped tomatoes and onions. Half of the soup went home for lunch the next day.

We were first served a warm, toasty Italian roll followed up with warm Italian bread which comes with butter as well as red and green dipping sauces, one made with jalapenos, the other

On another occasion, we tried the Papa Rellena appetizer special ($7). Mashed potatoes are mixed with egg and filled with beef, onions and black olives. The potatoes are then lightly deep fried. This appetizer was served with a refreshing onion and lettuce salad drenched in a tart, lime-based dressing.

Another of our selections, Tallarin Saltado (Peruvian style lo mein), made with linguine, chunks of beef, onion, green pepper, celery and tomato stir fried in a soy sauce-based mixture ($9), demonstrates both the Chinese and Italian influences in Peruvian cuisine.

We also feasted on the seafood salad ($15), which had the same ingredients as the seafood ceviche, this one with lettuce added and tossed in an Italian Meals for two dressing with added spices.
