“My menu has something on there for everybody in the family,” said Ferraro. He said he went to college for marketing and his menu, with its bright yellow and orange background to look like fire, is his main marketing tool.

The meatballs at Ferraro’s are wellseasoned and make a super meatball wedge ($8)—with the bread slightly crunchy after being warmed in the pizza oven.

Co-owner Frankie Ferraro is running Ferraro’s Pizza & Pasta in the Washington Park section of Port Chester. over linguini. Frankie said he used to whip it up for himself all the time when he worked at Glenville Pizzeria and decided to include it on his menu. The portion was large enough to bring some home for lunch the next day.

Besides Frankie’s Favorite Pasta, The Grizz, another favorite, is also named for him—white chicken chunks with broccoli in a garlic and white wine sauce over penne ($14.50 for dinner, $9.95 for lunch).

Lunch prices for specialty pastas are in effect from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Portions are smaller. Dinner prices include a small side salad and bread with pastas; salad and pasta with entrées.

Frankie’s other recommendations include Penne Vodka ($9.50 lunch, $12.95 dinner), which he said is “phenomenal,” as well as the Penne Carbonara ($9.95 lunch, $13.95 dinner). This dish consists of penne tossed in a bacon cream sauce with peas. And, he added, “my chicken parmesan dinners are the best ever.”

In creating the menu, Frankie said he “just went one by one and built the menu with things I liked and things I thought would sell.”

The lasagna ($11.50 for dinner) brought two squares of layered pasta, meat sauce and cheese, a large portion topped with melted mozzarella and sauce. It was yummy, but I’ve had better.

The Healthy Choice portion of the menu includes any pasta dish made with whole wheat penne or linguine, grilled chicken with various vegetables ($9.95), whole wheat pizza ($7) or Grilled Chicken and Shrimp Delight ($16.95), two pieces of grilled chicken and five grilled shrimp in a light garlic sauce on a bed of baby spinach.

There are chicken, veal, eggplant and seafood entrées ranging in price from $14.95 (with pasta and salad) to $16. Another option not on the menu is to order family style where you get an entrée, pasta, salad and two garlic breads to serve 4-5 people for $32-38 depending on the entrée.

Currently a special is being offered on Mondays and Tuesdays whereby you buy one large pizza and get a choice of chicken or Buffalo wings, mozzarella sticks, curly fries, house salad, soup, zeppoles, pepperoni twists, garlic knots, or a 2-liter bottle of soda free.

Right now there’s a choice of bottled or fountain sodas, but eventually Ferraro’s will also serve beer and wine. Frankie said they have applied for the required license.

Simple décor What had been Mirabello’s was only closed for a week before Ferraro’s opened in its place. During that time the restaurant was “brought up to par to our standards,” said Ferraro. It was thoroughly cleaned, the

menu changed, the ovens recalibrated, some painting done, mirrors added and ceiling tiles replaced. The small dining area was restored in the back where there had once been one, and a plasma TV was added.

While there is a seating area and friendly service—you order at the front counter and food is brought to your table—the majority of the business at Ferraro’s is takeout. And they do deliver to Port Chester, Rye Brook, Greenwich, Purchase and parts of Harrison for a $2 charge.

Deep red and off-white tiles cover the counter and walls at the front of the pizzeria where a lighted sign lists the toppings and prices for regular and Sicilian pizzas. A soda dispenser allows customers to serve themselves. A narrow walkway leads to the back of the restaurant where a small dining area seats 16. Oak-colored wainscoting covers the bottom portion of the walls while the top is painted white or covered with mirrors. Posters of Italy, a flower, an abstract painting and a collage of pictures in the shape of a slice of pizza decorate the walls.

Ferraro has hung photos of his father, his grandfather Francesco (for whom he is named), himself spinning a pizza outside Glenville Pizzeria, his two nephews (whom he adores), a few celebrities, the celebration marking the year Italy won the World Cup and a framed newspaper clipping about his father having recently won a Greenwich tennis tournament.

You can watch a ballgame or whatever happens to be on TV while enjoying your meal at tables for two or four with magenta tops. Most of the chairs have light and dark striped deep red fabric seats. Four bright red chairs don’t match the others.

Hours to be extended Hours are currently Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday from 12 noon to 10 p.m. Ferraro said they never close early and you can order a pizza at 10:59 and it will be delivered. Starting Jan. 1, he plans to stay open and deliver until 5 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays in order to capture the late night crowd and compete with the diner.

Parking is on the street.

Great reception so far Besides having great food, Ferraro’s goal is to make customers happy by treating them like family, and it seems that he is succeeding.

“The community has been great,” he said.

The business he and his father had projected to be doing after a year they succeeded in attaining after one month. “A lot of people know me,” said Frankie. “The community has been real supportive. I’m definitely happy I opened here.”
