Alba’s: Same great food in a lovelier package

hen people ask me what I consider to be the best restaurants in Port Chester, Alba’s Ristorante is always among them. And it’s clear the owners of this fine northern Italian restaurant at 400 North Main St. are doing something right— they’ve expanded twice in the establishment’s 17-year history. The latest expansion and renovation were completed last summer. Alba’s was closed from July 22-Sept. 4 when the majority of the upgrade was carried out.

Business has been consistently good and the customer base has expanded since Albanianborn brothers Ray and Sammy Balidemaj opened Alba’s on Mar. 17, 1994. With that motivation and because “there was a demand for private parties and I wanted to update,” said Ray, the head chef, the $2 million upgrade was undertaken. Besides maintaining a simply elegant décor, the brothers added the latest technology including flat screen TVs and a sound system that provides the ability to play different music in each room.

“Mostly I wanted to upgrade the outside,” said Ray. “Before it didn’t look clean-cut on the outside.” Alba’s no longer looks like a house that was added onto but instead resembles an Italian inn complete with black lantern fixtures that match the tall lamppost in the middle of the fully landscaped parking lot enclosed by a decorative black metal fence. There’s even a lovely fountain that was erected adjacent to the building.

Two houses were razed to make room for the 52-space parking lot which replaced the previous smaller one (that one had 30-some spaces). Valet parking is still the norm, however, so more than 52 vehicles can fit in the space.

A 1,200-square-foot party room with seating for 70 was added off the bar on the first floor along with a prep room the same size one floor below where the desserts, pastas, bread sticks and focaccia the restaurant is known for are now made. The other private room, known as the library, was enlarged from its previous capacity of 35 to around 50. The main dining room was reconfigured and redecorated but still seats 110.

Beautiful wooden doors, painted white, between the rooms can be opened and closed so Alba’s can now accommodate private parties from 40 to 200 people and more than one party at the same time. The private rooms can also be opened for public dining as needed on the weekends.

As has been their practice for all holidays, the regular menu will be in effect plus the usual specials of the day. “I tried a fixed price menu twice and said no more,” said Ray, noting that regular customers always wanted something that wasn’t on the special menu, and how could he refuse them? Alba’s will be open from 1-10 p.m. on Mother’s Day, May 8. Of course, reservations are a must because it is one of the restaurant’s biggest days of the year.

Even on a Tuesday night, there was an energy at Alba’s among both the wait staff and the customers that made me enjoy the cuisine and dining experience all the more.

Excellent culinary tradition

Alba’s Ristorante was recognized for its fine food and service from the beginning, having been tabbed by the New York Times as one of the best restaurants in the suburban area in 1994, the year it opened, and every few years after that. In recent years it has consistently received “very good” ratings from the Times, and customers have given the restaurant high points in Zagat surveys.

That’s a tribute to the owners, both hands-on restaurateurs.

They arrived in the U.S. from Albania in 1983 and were previously involved in several restaurants in the metropolitan area before the Balidemaj brothers came upon what they thought was the perfect location in Port Chester for their first joint venture. Alba’s: Same great food in a lovelier package them well, and especially with this latest expansion, they have several family members involved in the operation, which now employs a staff of 30.

To ensure the freshest ingredients, Ray continues to make the trip to Hunt’s Point Market in New York City three times a week for produce, meat and seafood. He said he sends a staff member to Restaurant Depot in Mt. Vernon for dry and paper goods and to pick up food items, so Alba’s will take advantage of the Port Chester location for some items when it opens.

“Hopefully it’s going to work for everybody,” he said, acknowledging the congested location where the restaurant supply store is being built on South Regent Street.

Ray hasn’t changed the menu significantly since the renovation. Regular customers would be upset. He did bring in a consultant from the Culinary Institute to suggest some new appetizers and desserts to keep the menu current. Instead of suggesting any particular dishes, the head chef said he thinks all the dishes are “good in their own way. There’s a pretty good selection, so it depends whoever likes what.” He makes a practice of changing the menu twice a year and carrying over the popular items.

Simply elegant décor

The exterior of the new Alba’s is a soft peach stucco with an Italian style terra cotta red brick roof and matching awnings. There are lots of windows across the front of the building both upstairs and down including one circular fenestration. Off each downstairs window extends a decorative wrought iron balcony, a detail that adds to the structure’s European look and feel.

While the main dining room continues to be simply elegant, I find it even more beautiful than before.

Paintings, mirrors and prints adorn the walls in addition to modern sconces providing a subtle glow. Lighting comes largely from recessed fixtures in the ceiling. The gas fireplace, which has a marble front, has been moved from its previous location as the focal point of the room off to the left side so it can be seen from every table.

The many-paned white doors between the rooms and white wood cabinetry create a clean look.

The new party room has the same color scheme, a marble fireplace and a similar décor.

Sound cushioning panels on the walls keep it from being as noisy and therefore more conducive to conversation than the main dining room on a busy Saturday night.

The expanded library, which used to be my favorite place to eat, still features a few shelves laden with books, but I haven’t seen it set up for dinner.

The attractive lounge is ringed with windows hung with sheer draperies tied back as in the new party room. Wooden stools with royal blue suede cloth seats run the length of the dark green marble-topped bar. A combination of beige marble and mirrors provide the backdrop to the bar. A lovely oil painting of a French street scene, which Ray said came from a restaurant the family owned back in Albania, hangs over the bar. Two glass-topped wooden tables for four and two other smaller marble-topped tables for two all have comfortable magenta chairs around them and can be used for eating as well as drinking. Tan and white tile covers the floor adjacent to the bar and oak flooring completes the picture.

To go with our meals, we selected a glass of chardonnay ($10) and another of Gavi di Gavi ($11), both dry white wines. Both were smooth, the latter having a more complex flavor.

In keeping with my love of shrimp, I ordered the Shrimp Scampi over rice ($27.95), which brought five good-sized,

toes. The meat was moist and the marinade created a dish that was umm, umm, good.

An array of luscious desserts was wheeled to our table on a cart and described by our waiter.

I went with the warm apple streudel with vanilla ice cream ($9). As with many of the desserts, it was served on a pretty, colorful plate surrounded by chocolate sauce crafted into an intricate design. It was yummy, not too heavy and the perfect amount for two. With two coffees ($1.50 each), our tab without tip came to $115.85.

Service was attentive and friendly without being intrusive.

Most if not all of the waiters were born in Albania, so they exude that European charm.

Menu, wine list, desserts

Alba’s Ristorante, which now resembles an Italian inn, is located at 400 North Main St. Walls are painted beige with darker soothing green accent walls and a deep reddish brown below a bright white chair rail.

Long sheer curtains hang at the windows. Rich oak floors are set off with varied Oriental and area rugs in deep reds as well as more subtle beiges and pastels.

On a recent Tuesday night my husband and I started our meal with the Caesar salad for two ($20), a real treat. It was prefaced by a basket of Terranova bread along with the restaurant’s yummy house made focaccia and irresistible bread sticks served with pats of butter.

The olive oil in the decanters on each table is also an option for dipping. There’s just noth-

lightly seasoned shrimp fanned and sautéed in a delicious white wine, garlic and lemon sauce which accentuated the delicate taste of the shrimp and also flavored the rice impeccably without soaking it. The Shrimp Scampi was served with perfectly cooked green beans (not too hard or soft) and a handful of small moist roasted potatoes.

My husband’s entrée choice, the Galleto alla Brace (grilled, marinated Cornish hen at

As a special appetizer on a recent visit I had the outstanding Fettucine Toscano ($12, $24 as a main dish), whole wheat pasta topped with chunks of lobster meat and fresh tomato.

Soups, from minestrone to Pasta e Fagioli, cost $8 and $9.

Sometimes there are special soups such as cream of asparagus as well.

Besides the Caesar for two, salads run $8, $1 extra with gorgonzola cheese. I can recommend the Insalata alla Alba, a lovely combination of arugula, endive, peppers, olives and sundried tomatoes. And the house dressing is outstanding. This salad is even better with the gorgonzola. I’ve also had the Insalata Trecolore, a combination of argula, endive and radicchio

with gorgonzola.

Besides the Gnocchi alla Alba mentioned earlier, pastas range from Fettucine Verde Bolognese (spinach fettucine in a tomato meat sauce) at $18.95, the price of most pastas, to Linguine al Vongole for $21.95, linguine with red or white clam sauce.

Chicken dishes go from $19.95 for Pollo Alba (marinated breast of chicken with grilled polenta, roasted garlic and oregano) to $21.95 for fresh farm quail with polenta, mushrooms and wild rice. I tried the latter a while back since I’d never had quail before and really enjoyed it.

Veal entrées cost from $21.95 for Scallopine di Vitello alla Sorentino (thin sliced veal topped with prosciutto, eggplant and mozzarella cheese) to $22.95 for Scallopine di Vitello alla Alba (veal scallopine topped with crabmeat, asparagus and fontina cheese in a cognac sauce).

As for seafood, besides the Shrimp Scampi, you can get Shrimp Fra Diavolo for the same price ($27.95) or Zuppe di Pesce (mixed seafood with fresh herbs and tomato broth) priced according to market besides the fresh fishes of the day. I can recommend the wild salmon with mustard sauce ($29.95) which was delicate, cooked perfectly so it melted in your mouth and topped with a slightly tart mustard sauce.

You can also get steaks and chops, as well as rack of lamb, for $33.95.

The lunch menu offers most of the same items for a dollar or two less.

The wine list, bound in a book, is extensive, featuring Champagnes, sparkling wine, and red and white wines from Italy, France, California, Washington, Oregon, Argentina, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. They range in price from $30 to $720. There is something for every palate and price range.

On a recent visit with friends, we had both the Chardonnay Libaio Ruffino ($35), described as “a fresh, medium-bodied wine with a clean, crisp finish,” and found it went down nicely. This wine surprisingly had a screw cap.

The Pinot Grigio Friuli 2009 ($40), described as “a beautifully structured wine of delicacy, finesse and subtle depth of flavor with a clean, fragrant bouquet,” was equally as good, maybe even better, because it had more character.

No menu exists for dessert, except the Zabaglione al Moscato D’Asti for two ($18) is on the takeout menu. Otherwise the desserts ($9) are displayed on a cart or are rattled off by your waiter. Besides the apple streudel, I can recommend the Italian cheesecake (smoother than traditional ricotta) and the chocolate almond cake (you’ll probably want to bring some of it home).

Mother’s Day tidbits and trivia

Mother’s Day is a day devoted to celebrating mothers and expressing love for the special women in our lives. Mother’s Day can also be a time to share some trivia and tidbits with those special women who mean so much.

• Americans owe Mother’s Day to West Virginia native Anna Jarvis, who held a memorial for her mother two years after the latter’s death in 1905. After the memorial, Jarvis devoted her efforts to a campaign to make Mother’s Day a nationally recognized holiday. The hard work paid off in 1914 when the day was nationally recognized.

• Anna Jarvis and her sister, Ellsinore, eventually grew to detest what they felt Mother’s Day had become. The sisters felt the day had grown too commercialized and spent their family inheritance campaigning against Mother’s Day. • Ironically, Anna Jarvis never married and had no children.

• Rajo Devi Lohan of India is believed to be the world’s oldest new mother. Lohan gave birth to a baby girl at age 70 after receiving IVF treatment. Within two years of the child’s birth, reports indicated Lohan’s health was deteriorating.

• Lina Medina is considered to be the youngest to ever give birth.

Medina delivered a 6 1/2-pound baby boy in Peru at the age of 5 years and 7 months. Medina was believed to have a rare condition known as precocious puberty which enabled her to conceive at such a young age.

• Ancient Egyptians had their own form of Mother’s Day by honoring the goddess Isis, who was known as the mother of pharaohs.

• The wife of Russian peasant Feodor Vassilyev is considered to be the record holder for birthing the most children. Mrs. Vassilyev is believed to have delivered 69 children between 1725 and 1765.

These children were delivered in a total of 27 births, including 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets.

Though little is known about the births or Mrs. Vassilyev, 67 of the 69 children were said to have survived infancy.

• The bond between mother and child is not exclusive to the human race. Mother chimpanzees, for instance, are said to develop lifelong relationships with their children.

• Carnations are the flowers most associated with Mother’s Day. White carnations are worn in memory of deceased mothers, while red and pink carnations are worn for those mothers who are still alive.

Famous quotes for Mother’s Day Mother’s Day is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world. Many countries and cultures choose to celebrate Mother’s Day in March, April or May. Though the Mother’s Day many people know today dates back a little more than a century, historians note that ancient Romans kept a festival to Cybele, a great mother of the Gods. One of the traditions associated with the current Mother’s Day is to give Mom a gift. Motherhood can be the ultimate selfless gesture Becoming a mother can be one of the most selfless and loving gestures a woman makes. In the course of bringing new life into the world, a woman experiences a host of physical and emotional changes, some of which may be long-lasting and undesired.

The body undergoes many transformations while pregnant.

Women must sacrifice some control over their bodies throughout a pregnancy, a sacrifice most are not accustomed to.

There are a number of things that take place that can surprise the average person. Here’s a look at some of them.

• Mood swings: Pregnancy brings with it great hormonal changes as the body manufactures the chemical messengers

necessary to transform an egg into a full-formed human being.

It is common to experience mood swings as a result of these fluctuating hormones. One moment a woman may want to cry while the next she is overjoyed. Mood swings are often the butt of jokes regarding pregnant women.

Other areas of the body can become blotchy or darker. On the bright side, pregnancy is known to stimulate extra blood flow, which can produce the side effect of rosier skin and the “pregnancy glow.”

• Hair changes: Women may find hair grows faster during

• Hair loss: After giving birth,

a woman’s hair actually may fall out or change in texture. It’s not uncommon for wavy hair to turn straight.

• Incontinence: While a new mom is changing her baby’s diaper, she may need to wear one of her own. That’s because pressure and strain to the pelvic area can compromise the pelvic floor muscles that staunch and start the flow of urine. This may improve over time, or Kegel exercises can be done to strengthen the area again.

While there are many uncomfortable and undesirable physical and emotional changes that take place upon becoming a mother, the ultimate reward is a beautiful child who will soon adore his or her mommy.
