Angelo’s Pizza & Pasta: A tiny place with huge portions

T

here are at least 20 places in Port Chester and Rye Brook that serve pizza. In Port Chester, just about every section of the village has its own neighborhood pizzeria. Angelo’s Pizza & Pasta fills that bill in the area around the train station.

This tiny corner restaurant, which only seats eight, is pretty much designed for takeout and delivery, as well as the casual passerby or neighborhood worker who may want to grab a slice or a pizza roll and eat in. While Angelo’s, located at 147 Irving Ave., corner of Pearl Street, may not be as well-known as other more established pizzerias in town, the pizza and other Italian food the chef cooks up are pretty darn good, and the portions are generous.

There are three other varieties as well. They all come with fries or a small salad for $7.95.

A number of lunch specials are available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.: an 8” hot mini wedge (meatball parmesan, sausage and pepper parmesan, chicken parmesan, Chicken Francese or Chicken Scarpata) with a can of soda for $6.49; a pasta dish such as penne chicken with broccoli, oil and garlic, Rigatoni di Capo (sautéed chicken, fresh garlic, spinach and white wine in a brown sauce), or Penne alla Vodka for $8.99; Chicken Francese over penne or Chicken Marsala for $9.99 or Veal Scarpariello or Parmigiana for $10.99, all served with a side salad.

Gomez speaks English well, as do most of the others who work at Angelo’s, albeit with an accent. All of the workers are Hispanic, so when you call up to place your order, you may at first think you have reached the wrong place. Just confirm that it’s Angelo’s and you’ll be all set.

They haven’t gotten my order wrong yet.

For delivery, the cost is $1 in town, $1.50 or $2 to Stamford or White Plains. Not knowing the exact protocol, I wondered if you’re supposed to tip the driver, even though I always do. “Being a delivery guy, everyone knows they live on tips,” said Gomez. “I try to give them a salary, too, so they stay with me.”

Angelo’s is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. except Saturday and Sunday when they open at 11.

Although the restaurant doesn’t technically serve breakfast, if you want peppers and eggs, Angelo will make it for you.

So far business has been decent considering the economy, Angelo said. As the pizzeria in closest proximity to the Capitol Theatre, he does get some business from theater-goers. However, he added, “you can’t rely on that. I rely on people from town.”

Mexican Philly Cheesesteak Pizza ($10.49, $15.98, $18.99 and $20.99) sounds intriguing (Philly steak, sautéed onions, jalapeno peppers, Monterey Jack and mozzarella) or, if you’re not into spicy food, skip the Mexican and go for the Philly Cheesesteak with green peppers and American cheese, often available at $3.75 per slice.

Besides the more traditional salad pizza ($9.99-$18.99), at Angelo’s you can request a chicken Caesar salad pizza with Caesar dressing on the side. I don’t see it on the menu, but I happened upon a gentleman delightfully eating a slice when I went in to take pictures.

Gomez said the Port Chester (grilled chicken, Portobello mushrooms, feta cheese and balsamic vinegar), Rye Brook and Cobb (mixed greens, grilled chicken, gorgonzola cheese, bacon, walnuts and dried raisins) salads are the most popular. Salads generally cost $8.49 small, $10.49 large, some even less.

Another meal I can recommend is the spaghetti with minced garlic, oil and broccoli ($7.99 for a small portion which is plenty for one person). It’s on the menu without the broccoli, but of course Angelo’s entertains special requests. Add a small tossed salad ($4.95) and you’ve got the perfect meal.

The lasagna, too, brings a huge portion two can easily share. It is filled with chopped meat, ricotta, tomato sauce and topped with loads of melted mozzarella cheese ($11.99). When I ordered this meal with a salad to go, I not only got warm Italian bread but delicious baked garlic knots oozing olive oil and covered with fresh garlic, parsley and other seasonings. “We give them to try if you order over $30,” said Gomez. You can also order garlic knots separately at six for $2.69.

For lunch, besides pizza and salad, the Panini are a good bet. Angelo recommended the grilled
