A TASTE OF PORT CHESTER Second chance to sample specialties from 30-some local restaurants

o matter how you look at it, last year’s Taste of Port Chester was a tremendous success. This year’s fundraiser for the Tamarack Tower Foundation, set for this Sunday, June 3 from 12-3:30 p.m., promises to be even better.

Last year 26 restaurants and other food establishments signed up to participate; this year 34 are on board. Last year 571 people bought tickets, and this year Joan Conklin, who spearheaded the idea last year and is heading the committee that is organizing the event for the second year, is predicting 700 to800 participants if the weather is fine.

If her prediction is correct, the non-profit Tamarack Tower Foundation (TTF) will raise significantly more this time around than the $13,000 made at the first Taste of Port Chester, after expenses, to support scholarships, individual school grants and other enhancements to the Port Chester public schools.

While there were about $3,000 in expenses last year, Conklin expects them to be less than $2,000 this year due to Eric Steilman from Signs on Demand donating the signs, banners and maps, “which saved us a ton of money,” and dropping some advertising that was ineffective.

This community-oriented event allows you to sample the cuisine from all the participating Port Chester restaurants, bakeries and food carts, plus taste some wine at Varmax, for $25 if you sign up in advance, $30 the day of the event.

Children under 12 cost $15 in advance, $20 the day of the event.

If you’ve paid your $25 in advance and received a wristband and map in the mail, you’re all set to go on Sunday. You can start at any of the participating restaurants and at your leisure visit as many or as few as you choose to get a taste of the chef’s specialties.

“Tandoori is going to do his usual buffet because he does it every Sunday,” said Conklin. “Neri’s brings out a platter to pick one of their delicious pastries.” Other than that, she doesn’t know what’s on the tasting menu anywhere else.

“We keep telling them it’s a taste, but it’s up to them what they offer.”

Drinks are not included.

In general, tasters will mingle around nibbling on food rather than sitting down. And, besides eating, what makes this event so much fun is the chance to see and chat with friends and neighbors along the way and catch up on the latest gossip.

New this year is the wine tasting at Varmax Liquor Pantry and food carts for Longford’s ice cream (celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2012) and Baron’s Foods (owned

by Port Chester Police Officer Chris Krzeminski and partners). The owners of one brand new restaurant— Coals at 35 North Main St., specializing in grilled pizza—smartly contacted Conklin about taking part.

Some who were on board last year willingly agreed to sign up again.

Others needed some arm twisting.

“Everybody should be clamoring to get into this Taste because I think it’s tremendous exposure for them so people can see their restaurants inside and the kind of food they give and it’s just great PR,” said the gregarious Conklin. “We advertise in newspapers, on radio stations and on banners. People have written to me after the Taste last year and said there were places they always wanted to try, never went and now they’ll go back.” She said more places should be offering discounts on future meals or putting out menus to lure tasters back for more.

If you haven’t paid in advance or not far enough in advance to have received your wristband(s) in the mail, you’ll have to sign in at a tent set up in the marina parking lot on Abendroth Avenue opposite Per Voi II and pick up your map and wristband which entitles you to visit all of the participating restaurants.

There will be one table for those who have paid or called in advance, another for those registering for the first time. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. Restaurants won’t open to tasters until noon.

A cart for Longford’s ice cream and a station for Baron’s Foods will be set up in the registration area.

WFAS will be broadcasting from the deck of Per Voi II from 2-4 p.m.

Participating restaurants will be designated with blue and white balloons outside and/or a large royal blue star with “A Taste of Port Chester” penned across it in white in the window. In addition, students from the Anthony Foust community service group at Port Chester High School will be directing tasters to the various eateries.

Port Chester High School graduate David Kucera, who owns County Coach, has donated three school buses that will take different routes so you can leave your car at one location and get a bus to take you to all the restaurants if you so choose. You can walk to many of the restaurants on North Main Street, for instance, but others such as Arrosto on South Regent Street and Il Sogno on the Boston Post Road will require either a car or bus.
