Il Pizzaiola: Great gourmet pizza and much more By Jananne Abel


t’s been almost a year since brothers Frank and Mario Dattilo bought Marini’s Pizza in downtown Port Chester and renamed it Il Pizzaiolo Pizzeria & Catering. However, the change of ownership was no doubt unclear to customers since the restaurant remained open during the transition and the sign out front wasn’t replaced until January. “It took us a while to get going,” said Frank Dattilo, 27, who undertook a major renovation of the space at 46 North Main St. Frank, in fact, did all of the work himself over a period of about three months. He transformed a typical pizzeria into a clean, attractive, inviting place to eat. The Datillo brothers took over the pizzeria in July 2006, Frank having previously been a partner at Frankie & Louie’s Italian Restaurant on Willett Avenue. He said he was originally going to move to Florida but then decided against it, Marini’s came up for sale and he snagged it. Mario, 34, of Rye Brook also works at Mario’s Pizza in White Plains, a family business their father—also named Mario-started 15 years ago. The long-awaited sign out front displays a man twirling a pizza—perfect for a restaurant called Il Pizzaiolo—Italian for The Pizza Man. Mario said he and his brother came up with the name for their pizzeria and Italian restaurant together. It’s not easy, however, for most Americans to pronounce and doesn’t just roll off their tongue. Frank, who lives in West Harrison, brought chef Luis Morales with him from Frankie & Louie’s.

He said the food is pretty much the same at all three family restaurants. With everything running smoothly at Il Pizzaiolo, two months ago Frank opened Capri Pizza & Pasta in Tarrytown with another partner. Both brothers agreed that gourmet pizzas, wraps, salads and pizza rolls are the specialties and biggest sellers at Il Pizzaiolo. And while it’s a pleasant place to eat in, much of their business is takeout. There is free delivery with a minimum purchase of $6. Inside the restaurant orders are placed at the counter and either picked up there or delivered to your table. Service, whether over the phone or in person, is always friendly and efficient. Pizza rolls come in three varieties: chicken, meat (a combination of ham, pepperoni, sausage, meat sauce and meatball) and veggie (spinach, broccoli and mushrooms), all $4. You can also get a hotdog wrap (hotdog wrapped in American cheese and pizza dough) for $1.75. Recently my party of three shared a large gourmet pizza, half Buffalo chicken and half lasagna, for a total of $15. I can recommend both varieties, but the Buffalo chicken, topped with pieces of

The pizza is fairly thin-crusted and crunchy. Examples of other gourmet pizzas are Veggie Pizza (spinach, broccoli, mushrooms, onions, peppers and olives) at $16, Grandma’s Pizza (a Sicilian pizza topped with chunky tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella cheese and chicken cutlet) at $17, Philly Cheese Steak Pizza (steak, mozzarella and American cheese) at $16 and Il Pizzaiolo Special (pepperoni, sausage, peppers, onions, meatballs, mushrooms and meat sauce) at $17. All varieties are available in the thicker Sicilian version for $2 extra. If you prefer a pizza made to order with the topping(s) of your choice, that is also available starting from a base price of $11 for a large pie and $13 for Sicilian with each topping adding $2 to the price. I can also vouch for the freshness and quality of all seven of the salads on the menu, which range from $3 for a small house salad to $7 for a large Caprese (tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil and olive oil), chef or arugula. Every Italian restaurant makes Penne ala Vodka a little differently, and I like many versions. At Il Pizzaiolo it’s more tomatoey and saucy than some but also very good and a healthy portion for $9. In general, prices are reasonable at Il Pizzaolo and the food is reliably good, with only a few disappointments. A blackboard displays daily lunch specials ($7.95-$9.95) such as Penne ala Vodka with chicken cutlet parmesan, ravioli with chicken and arugula, Buffalo chicken wrap with fries and prosciutto and fresh mozzarella wrap.

Central to the décor at Il Pizzaolo, a storefront space that seats 26 at square butcher block tables with ice cream chairs, is a large fish tank

filled with colorful fish against one wall. The same small variegated tile in earth tones covers the base of the fish tank as well as the front of and behind the counter where you place your order. Textured panels of wood painted brown cover the lower portion of the walls in the dining room while the top of the walls are sponge-painted beige. The floor is covered in large rustcolored ceramic tiles.

Dinner for six

We recently placed a takeout order at Il Pizzaiolo and fed six people for $58 with plenty of leftovers. We had a Fried Ravioli appetizer (pasta is stuffed with ricotta cheese, deep fat fried and comes with a side of marinara sauce) at $5.50, small Caesar salad ($4) with tasty dressing and crunchy croutons, an exceptional large arugula salad ($7) made with the greens, tomatoes, onions, fresh mozzarella cheese, mixed olives and balsamic dressing, a refreshing cucumber salad ($6) consisting of chunks of cucumber, onions, tomatoes and gorgonzola cheese, a chicken parmesan wedge ($6), a sausage parmesan wedge ($5.50), baked ziti ($9), linguine with red clam sauce ($11) and an order of lightly battered and deep fat fried potato cones ($4). Besides the positive comments above, these were the complaints: The sausage wasn’t spicy enough for my daughter, the pasta in the baked ziti seemed a little too well done and the linguine with clam sauce had chunks of tomato and too much of a tomato taste for my liking.

Other menu items

The menu at Il Pizzaiolo is a large one, with many appetizers such as chicken wings (12 pieces of Buffalo, barbecue or teriyaki at $6), mozzarella or zucchini sticks ($5), fried calamari ($8), Clams Oreganata ($7), antipasto ($10), garlic bread ($2) and garlic balls ($3.50).

Five soups, all priced at $4, include chicken orzo, lentil, minestrone, pasta fagioli and tortellini & brodo. Among the wraps, mostly $6, are oven roasted turkey with avocado, bacon, provolone and mayo; Italian combo; BBQ chicken; chicken Caesar; grilled chicken and tuna melt. Besides the two hot wedges we ordered, following are some of the other offerings in this category: meatball parmigiana ($5.50), veal and peppers ($6.50), Philly cheese steak ($6.50), shrimp parmigiana ($7.50) and eggplant parmigiana ($5.50). And there are cold wedges such as Tri-color (grilled chicken, arugula, fresh mozzarella and roasted peppers ($7), BLT ($4), tuna ($5) and Italian combo ($6). Burgers on rolls or wedges ($59), calzones ($3.50-$4.00), a dozen pasta dishes including those mentioned above plus lobster ravioli ($11), cavatelli with broccoli rabe ($12), gnocchi with meat sauce ($9), fettuccini Alfredo ($9) and Penne Arrabbiata (with crumbled sausage in spicy marinara sauce at $11), to name a few, as well as chicken, eggplant, sausage, veal, shrimp and calamari entrées complete the menu. The entrées are served with bread and choice of pasta or salad. All appetizers, salads, pastas and entrées on the menu can be ordered for parties by the half or full tray. Il Pizzaiolo is open late. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12 midnight and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Parking is on the street. Both Dattilo brothers said business has been okay but could be better. That may be because the name of the restaurant hasn’t caught on yet, and I’m sure most people think it’s just a pizzeria and don’t know about their extensive Italian menu.
