A TASTE OF PORT CHESTER A chance to sample specialties from two dozen local restaurants

hat does Port Chester have that sets it apart from other municipalities in Westchester? Lots of great restaurants.

If you could sample the cuisine from 25 of them on one day for $25, wouldn’t you jump at the chance, especially if all the proceeds were going to a great cause? Of course you would.

Well, now’s your chance.

The Tamarack Tower Foundation, a non-profit organization that raises money for scholarships, teacher grants and to otherwise support the Port Chester School District, is sponsoring A Taste of Port Chester this Sunday, June 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

If you’ve paid your $25 in advance and received a wrist band and map in the mail, you’re all set to go on Sunday. You can start at any of the participating restaurants and at your leisure visit as many or as few as you want to get a taste of the chef’s specialty(ies).

“Panera is going to concentrate on healthy salads, Tandoori is going to have some type of Indian food,” said Joan Conklin, who spearheaded the idea and is heading up a committee that is organizing the event. “You can take a taste of it and maybe get a drink. The drink you will have to pay for.”

Tasters will mingle around nibbling on food rather than sitting down. They’ll also have a chance to chat with friends and neighbors.

If you haven’t paid in advance or not far enough in advance to have received your wristband(s) in the mail, you’ll have to sign in at either T&J Villaggio Trattoria at 223-225 Westchester Ave. or at a table set up on

The restaurant tasting will take place Sunday, June 5 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Abendroth Avenue side of Rosie’s on the River and pick up your map and wristband which entitles you to visit all of the participating restaurants. They will be designated with balloons out front.

If you haven’t paid in advance, the cost will be $30.

As of press time, there were 25 participating restaurants, with more signing on every day. “We’ll take them up to the last day,” said Conklin.

little while at the train station while people sample the food from the three South American restaurants in that vicinity, travel down Willett Avenue and stop at Sonora (upscale Latino) and Frankie and Louie’s (Italian), turn right on Putnam Avenue and stop between Pasquale’s (Italian) and Café Mirage (international fare) before continuing on to Nessa (Italian enoteca), Tarry Market (Batali/Bastianich Italian provisions) and the other participating restaurants on North Main Street before turning right on Westchester Avenue and continuing back to T&J where it will start the route over again. You can pick up the bus, which will have A Taste of Port Chester signs on the outside of it, anywhere along the route.

Conklin, a Tamarack Tower Foundation board member, has a townhouse in Brielle on the Jersey shore. Two years ago through a Money Mailer she learned about a similar restaurant tasting event in Belmar, N.J. and decided to participate. There it’s held in March before the start of the tourist season and benefits Rose Catholic Church. “Last year I said if anywhere this would work it would be Port Chester with its variety of restaurants,” said Conklin.

But, she thought to herself,

“it’s going to be lot of work.”

The hardest part was getting the restaurants on board. “They have no idea what you’re talking about,” she said. “You want us to put out free food and why should we put out free food?” they asked. “It’s for the kids. It’s great advertising for you all over the place,” she and her committee members replied.

She thanked Tamarack Tower board member Margot and husband Mayor Dennis Pilla for getting some of the high end restaurants like Nessa, bartaco (Mexican), Tarry Market and Sonora to sign on and Margot appealed to some of the ethnic restaurants in Spanish. Once they had a solid nucleus, it was easier to get others to join in.

“Denise (Quinn), Margot and I have been going every Sunday to restaurants,” said Conklin. “We went to like 52 restaurants to get the 25.”

She was happy that Applebee’s, late to sign up, Panera Bread, Euro Asian Bistro and Buffalo Wild Wings, all in the same vicinity, are taking part. “That whole area will be full of balloons,” she said excitedly.

Besides Quinn, others on Conklin’s committee include Sally Dianni, Karen Mutino and Karen Corbetta, the latter who developed the tasteofportchester.com website and flyers. Tamarack

Tower Foundation President Bishop Nowotnik secured the bus. Board member Joan Gargone was responsible for getting permission for the signs and banners up around town and Peter Mutino dealt with the radio stations and cable TV. Eric Steilman from Signs on Demand made the signs installed at Messina Park and on South Ridge Street.

“It takes a village to do this,” Conklin concluded, adding that she’s got board members and her husband prepared to handle the lines of people signing up on the day of the event.

“It’s going to be so crazy and then I’m going to collapse,” she said.

Sixteen tickets were sold and many letters were passed out at Port Chester Fest last weekend. As of Monday, about 100 tickets had been sold. Conklin said she was expecting at least 200 attendees and if the weather is decent is planning on 400-500.

Advertising, balloons, etc. have cost about $3,000, so that money has been recouped already. “The day of the event is going to be big,” she said. “Mary [in Belmar] made $25,000 the first year, made $17,000 on a horrible rainy day the second year.

I’m figuring June, hopefully we will make a good buck.”

A Taste of Port Chester will take the place of the dinner dance and golf outing Tamarack Tower Foundation has held in the past. A raffle, with tickets selling for $100, is still on the table, with the winning tickets to be drawn the third week in September at T&J Villaggio Trattoria.

“Port Chester is always put down,” said Conklin, a retired gym teacher who taught at King Street School and the Port Chester Middle School.

“The greatest reward besides making money would be the feeling that, wow, this town is terrific. I got that feeling from Port Chester Fest. That would make my day.”

Conklin encourages all tasters to make it a 10573 day by heading over to the art show at Crawford Park being sponsored by the Port Chester Council for the Arts after filling their bellies. Art 10573 will go on from noon to 5 p.m. at the park, located at 122 North Ridge St. in Rye Brook.
