Antonio’s Pizzeria & Restaurant: Where thin-crusted pizza is king I

n every corner of the Village of Port Chester and in each shopping center in the Village of Rye Brook lies a pizzeria. In fact, I have counted 17 places within the two villages that serve pizza, down from the more than 20 pizzerias/Italian restaurants/bars that made pizza 10 years ago. Over the years I’m pretty sure we have featured every one of them—except Antonio’s. I’m not sure why that is. We’ve ordered takeout pizza from Antonio’s for our office in the past, but before this review, I had never physically set foot in the place. I was shocked to learn that it has been in business for 30 years.

I do know that pizzerias tend to be neighborhood hangouts and that people generally frequent those in their neck of the woods. Maybe that’s why Antonio’s Pizzeria & Restaurant, located in the Pathmark Shopping Center at 130 Midland Ave., hasn’t been on my radar—it’s not near my house or office.

But when you can get pizza or any of Antonio’s other Italian specialties delivered for only $1.00, where it’s located shouldn’t really matter.

So, if you’re looking for excellent pizza and generally good Italian food at reasonable prices, Antonio’s is a good bet.

tently fresh—soft and just a little chewy and crunchy. When I visited Antonio’s with a group of people later on a Friday night, the lasagna pizza ($3.50 per slice, $17 for a small, $19 for a large pie) seemed to have been sitting around and a slice was less than fresh, the crust brittle.

Of course it’s always best at any pizzeria to order a whole pie to guarantee its freshness, but that’s not always possible.

The times we’ve ordered a whole pie at our office we were all raving about it—large thin slices, fresh ingredients and lots of cheese. This past week I watched William Santos of Port Chester lovingly make a cheese pizza, throwing it, stretching it to take up the whole area of a pizza board and ensure its thinness, adding cheese, then adding some more, and popping it in the pizza oven.

While owner Adam Merida of Port Chester said cheese pies ($12 for a small 16”, $14 for a large 18”) are the most popular, he said all the pizza varieties on the menu are big sellers. Toppings cost $2 each extra. On my list to try in the future: focaccia pie ($18).

On my first visit, a meatball wedge ($5.50) was tasty and hot on warm, crunchy Italian bread.

Usually there are daily specials posted on the wall near the front counter—pastas, heroes and salads. “They are things on the menu, but we lower the prices,” said Merida.

Refrigerated cases of bottled beverages are available as well as fountain drinks including Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper, Tropicana fruit punch, Sierra Mist and Diet Pepsi.

As I said, prices are reasonable, and if you want to get $2 off any pie, a free topping, $5 off any order of $25 or more or enjoy a Family Feast of two 18” pies, one order of wings

Adam Merida has been working at Antonio’s Pizzeria & Restaurant since he was 16, a year after immigrating to Port Chester from Guatemala. He’s now 38. He started as a dishwasher but quickly moved to the front of the restaurant. He worked for the original owner, Antonio Petrolo, for whom the restaurant is named, and the recipes have remained pretty much the same over the years.

Seven years ago Merida and a partner took over the restaurant and ran it for four years. Merida has been the sole owner for the last three.

During all the transition, the name of the restaurant has remained constant. “What’s the point of changing the name if business is good?” he said.

Even though he’s satisfied with the business his restaurant has been doing, Merida, who’s on the shy side, admits that “it could always be better.”

Antonio’s has a lot of regular customers and, even after 22 years, Merida enjoys going to work every day. “What else am I going to do?” he said. “This is what I know.”

Hours, parking

Antonio’s is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. However, no breakfast is served. It is only closed three days a year—Christmas, New Year’s Day and Easter. There is convenient free parking in the shopping center lot adjacent to the restaurant.
