Experience exceptional Italian food in warm surroundings at Trattoria 632 I

love to be able to recommend a restaurant where I can almost guarantee that no matter what you order it will be top notch. That’s the case with Trattoria 632, a short distance over the Rye Brook line in Purchase. This lovely trattoria has a rich, warm décor, pleasant wait staff and exceptional Italian food at commensurate prices.

Opened in December 2010 as Full Moon Trattoria, the restaurant at 632 Anderson Hill Rd. closed six weeks later following a fire in the heating system which destroyed half the building. Although it looks like two old stucco houses that have been connected, this location has long been a bar/restaurant—for many years The Hilltop and more recently Jordan’s Hilltop Bar & Restaurant.

After undertaking renovations to open Full Moon Trattoria, owner John Gresia of Eastchester took the opportunity following the fire to make the bar and restaurant a location that would appeal to a diverse clientele— from the students at Purchase College, to the residents of Purchase, Harrison, Rye Brook, Port Chester and Greenwich, to nearby corporations such as PepsiCo, Morgan Stanley and MasterCard.

Full Moon Trattoria reopened in August 2011 with additional seating and a raised ceiling plus a new rich mahogany décor in the bar and a

classily renovated room upstairs that seats 45 and is equipped with screens for corporate meetings that might require audiovisual presentations. It is also used for dining on weekends.

In March 2012, the restaurant went through a name change to give it “more of an Italian flair” and “something a little more catchy,” said Gresia, 46, who also co-owns a catering hall in Hastings called Westchester Manor. It is now named for its number on Anderson Hill Road.

With its little alcoves and stained glass windows, Trattoria 632 is an appealing choice for Valentine’s Day. Although the menu had not been set as of press time, Gresia said there would be a number of specials—some for two—plus the regular menu. A few examples: Hot antipasto for two featuring Eggplant Rollatini, stuffed mushrooms, stuffed clams and Shrimp Oreganata ($19) and bone-in filet mignon ($38).

Experience exceptional Italian food in warm surroundings at Trattoria 632 Continued from page 3 also order a slice of pizza at the pizza counter or in the bar area of the restaurant ($3 for cheese, $4.50 for specialty slices like chicken parmesan or eggplant focaccia) but not in the dining room. In the more informal bar area you can also get Sicilian or Grandma’s pizza (a thinner Sicilian topped with plum tomatoes and fresh mozzarella), calzones and broccoli rabe rolls.

And let’s not forget the homemade gelato ($8) that is made especially for the restaurant. This creamy delicacy comes in chocolate, vanilla, hazelnut and pistachio flavors.

Dinner for two I visited Trattoria 632 three times for dinner in recent weeks and each time had a pleasant experience, receiving efficient, attentive service by manager George Malico and his staff.

The artichoke soup of the day ($8) had a delicate, slightly tangy flavor, a medium consistency and tiny orzo and bits of spinach swimming in it.

I can rave about the pork chops with hot and sweet vinegar peppers ($24). This dish was nicely presented with sprigs of parsley and red peppers on top of two large, moist chops in a spicy sauce created by the peppers and a disappointingly few slices of potato. Needless to say, one chop found its way home and provided another meal for another day.

We were first served a basket of Italian casa bread accompanied by a ceramic dish filled with olives and olive oil for dipping.

On one visit my husband and I started our meal with the Cozze Fra Diavolo ($12), Prince Edward Mussels, plum tomatoes

smoked bacon, fresh pears and balsamic vinaigrette.

To complement our meal, we selected a bottle of the Gavi Figini ($40), a reasonably priced Italian dry white variety from their list which includes a good selection of wines by the bottle as well as by the glass.
