A few of my favorite foods

he song “My Favorite Things” from “The Sound of Music” inspired this column, the third in a series, about some of my favorite foods from Port Chester and Rye Brook restaurants. After more than 15 years of writing reviews and stories about eateries in the two villages (we started this restaurant guide in February 1995), certain foods stick out in my mind that I’ve eaten at various local dining spots. Some I eat often, others I get cravings for from time to time and others I just recall as exceptional from reviews I have done.

Lasagna at Frankie & Louie’s and chili at Q Spaghetti with clams at John’s of Arthur Avenue Pain au chocolat at Kneaded Bread and the pleasure it brings These are a few of my favorite things When the rain falls, when the meetings drag, when I’m feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite foods, and then I don’t feel so bad.

Spaghetti with clams At the newest restaurant in town, John’s of Arthur Avenue at 508 Westchester Ave., there are many delicious specialties, including the various styles of pizza, but I’m infatuated with the spaghetti with clams. Not to be confused with spaghetti or linguine with clam sauce offered at other restaurants, this dish features al dente spaghetti (which I find better than linguine as it is more delicate) tossed in a tasty garlic, olive oil and clam juice combination and topped with a dozen or more little necks in the shell. This delicate, meaty combination ($15.95) is very satisfying.

John’s opened Aug. 24 in the space that had been P&D Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria.

Lasagna At Frankie & Louie’s Restaurant at 414 Willett Ave. the creative Italian specials as well as traditional Ital-

ian specialties keep me going back for more. However, more often than not, I’m drawn to the scrumptious lasagna.

Moist, loaded with chopped beef, topped with Frankie & Louie’s delicious tomato sauce and smothered in melted mozzarella cheese, this lasagna is to die for.

One large serving ($10.95) feeds two, unless you’re really pigging out or have an extremely healthy appetite. Combine the lasagna with Frankie & Louie’s excellent house salad topped with gorgonzola cheese ($5) and the crunchy, warm, seeded Italian bread from Arthur Avenue that comes with all entrées and you’ve got one fabulous meal.

Chili Chili comes in endless varieties and degrees of spiciness, but the majority are made with chopped meat. The Texas No-Bean Chili at Q Authentic Barbecue Restaurant at 112 North Main St., however, features chunks of tender beef in a savory, perfectly spicy sauce.

The Texas No-Bean Chili at Q Authentic Barbecue Restaurant on Port Chester’s North Main Street is so meaty you can eat it with a fork. lots of yummy cheddar cheese, it’s so meaty you can eat it with a fork and split one portion ($8.25) between two people. Combined with Q’s moist, delicious corn bread, which is served on the side, the chili makes an exceptional meal for lunch or dinner.

Grilled pizza and a flight of beer

The Mac ‘n’ Cheese ($6) at Westchester Burger Co. in the Washington Park Plaza at 275 South Ridge St. is rich and creamy. If you add chunks of lobster to it (another $6), which is one of the choices, the resulting dish can accurately be described as decadent, which is what the waitress called it on my last visit. Listed under Starters and Snacks, the Lobster Mac-N-Cheese comes in a large crock and can be enjoyed by itself with a salad or split into two smaller crocks upon request so you can also share a burger and salad or fries with another person to make a satisfying meal for lunch or dinner.

The grilled pizza is so nice and thin at Coals, located at 35 ½ North Main St., that you can really taste all the ingredients. Coals’ super thin oblong pizzas ($11-14) come right off the hot grill, are placed on decorative oval ceramic plates and then cut into irregular-shaped pieces before serving. I’ve tried just about every variety on the menu and have found them all delectable. The flavors are bold, the ingredients fresh, the crust crunchy and the cheese seems to melt in your mouth.

It’s especially fun to pair a pizza with a flight of craft beer ($8), consisting of four 4-ounce glasses served on a wooden paddle. You can choose from the 10 beers on tap, and even though you might not like every one, the enjoyment is in the sipping, tasting, sharing and comparing.

T&J Pizza & Pasta at 227 Westchester Ave. serves up many wonderful Italian dishes, but I get cravings for their tortellini soup ($4.95 small, $6.95 large), especially on a cold day in the winter. The combined texture and taste make it stand out. Lots of chewy cheese tortellini plus egg yolks dropped into a satisfying chicken broth give this soup a wonderful consistency. I combine it with T&J’s fantastic house salad for a warming noontime meal.

I have several favorites at The Kneaded Bread bakery at 181 North Main St., corner of Mill, but this time around I’m going to recommend the pain au chocolat ($2.25), also called chocolate croissants.

These sweet gems go fast in the morning and therefore are rarely available in the afternoon. Buttery like the croissants and filled with just the right amount of chocolate, they are as close to the authentic French version as you can get.

Peekytoe Crab Toast

The Peekytoe Crab Toast ($10.95) at härth in the Hilton Westchester at 699 Westchester Ave. is one of the executive chef’s favorite items on the menu. It is also one of mine.

I always pair this sandwich with Lyon Park’s house made macaroni salad, which is unlike any other I’ve tasted. It’s light on the mayo and consists of elbows, chopped carrots, celery and parsley.

Somewhat bland in flavor, it cuts the spiciness of the sandwich. However, it’s also appetizing on its own. A large container costs $2.50.
