Same quality cuisine at Giorgio’s after 25 years F

or almost a quarter of a century Giorgio Canzoniero has been the heart and soul of the restaurant that bears his name in the Village of Port Chester. For 15 years Giorgio’s was a tiny restaurant conspicuously located across from the Rye Town Office Building at 11 Pearl St., moving almost 10 years ago to a much larger venue off the beaten track at 64 Merritt St. Since then this fine Italian restaurant has existed quietly and successfully tucked away in a largely residential neighborhood. While business has unquestionably been down the last year or two due to the economy, the quality of the food and service has not changed, nor has Giorgio, who at 60 is as attentive as ever to his customers and as enthusiastic as ever about the food he serves.

“I have the same mentality,” said the Argentinian-born restaurateur. “I haven’t changed.

I like to work.” He wishes times were better and he could count on a booming business, but he’s learned to adapt. He’s no longer open for lunch and is closed Monday. On slow days he does the cooking himself, an art he learned from his mother.

In April 2000 Giorgio’s opened in its present location at the corner of Merritt Street and Ellendale Avenue which between the upstairs and downstairs spaces seats almost three times the 50 accommodated on Pearl Street—40 downstairs and 100 upstairs.

It will be 10 years in April that the upscale restaurant has been open at its current address,

and Canzoniero has no regrets about the move.

“I never had any doubt,” he said. “Customers followed me, but the economy is up and down as it was in the 90s.” While business has been off 40%, maybe things are looking up. When we spoke last week, Giorgio had more holiday parties booked this year than last, including two on Christmas Eve. Besides the economy, however, Giorgio’s now has lots of competition. In the past 25 years, the number of restaurants in Port Chester has increased dramatically as has the number of fine dining establishments in the area.

Consistent food and menu

The food is consistent but not inexpensive at Giorgio’s.

“The menu doesn’t change, but I do change the prices,” said Canzoniero. “In fact, I lowered the prices from two years ago.”

The demand is down, so the prices are lower at Hunt’s Point for meats, he said. He shops at Hunt’s Point Market in New York City as well as at Restaurant Depot in Mt. Vernon. He gets his seafood from Elaine’s Seafood in Port Chester. And he rarely buys anything frozen.

Although the menu lists Filet of Sole Francessi ($24) and Snapper Marinara or Livornese ($28), sometimes Canzoniero substitutes one or both of those for varieties of fish he can buy fresh. “I’d rather offer something that’s appealing to me,” he said. Besides the printed menu, which consists of a simple sheet of 8 ½” x 14” cream-colored paper folded like an envelope, there are 2-3 daily specials.

Entrées range in price from $24 for Filet of Sole Francessi or Pollo Scarpariello to $38 for a broiled center cut veal chop. All include vegetables.

Besides 10 entrées, six pasta

appetizers ($12-$13) can also be served as main dishes for about $10 more. Choose from Angel Hair or Tortellini Bolognese, Fettuccine Alfredo, Angel Hair with Clam Sauce, Ravioli Filetto (tomatoes and basil) and Penne alla Vodka.

Among the nine appetizers are Clams Oreganata ($13), Casino ($12) or on ice ($12), fresh mozzarella ($15), Prosciutto di Parma and Melon ($18), Caesar Salad ($9) and Insalata di Casa ($7).

It’s pretty standard fare, nothing out of the ordinary, but everything is made fresh with the finest ingredients by expert chefs, sometimes Giorgio himself. Portions are generous, and you come away feeling like this meal was not at all ordinary but in fact extraordinary. What more could you ask from a restaurant?

What we had

A large window filled with greenery is the focal point of the main dining room downstairs at Giorgio’s.

My husband and I had dinner at Giorgio’s twice in recent weeks. On our first visit we ordered the Clams Oreganata ($13) which brought seven clams in the shell which were delicate and crunchy swimming in a lemony sauce with parsley.

These are made with whole Little Neck clams, bread crumbs, herbs including oregano, garlic, parmesan cheese and olive oil in

a white wine, parsley and lemon sauce. Delectable!

The Seafood Salad ($16) was simply elegant. It consisted of five or six (I forgot to count) good-sized shrimp, petite, tender calamari, red peppers roasted in the kitchen, green and black olives and thinly sliced onions in olive oil with some greens on the side. Delicately delicious!

The beautifully presented special salad ($10) brought arugula, chopped tomatoes and roasted red pepper and chunks of gorgonzola cheese tossed with a slightly sweet balsamic vinaigrette for a delicious combination of flavors.

We unfortunately ate too much of the wonderful Terranova bread from Arthur Avenue along with our appetizers and found that we didn’t have much room for our entrées.

The Sirloin Steak Pizzaiola ($34), cooked to a perfect medium, was mouth-wateringly delicious. The good-sized piece of meat was first sautéed in garlic and oil, then white wine before being topped with marinara sauce, fresh porcini mushrooms, garlic, white wine and crushed red pepper. It was served with ribbed carrots and broccoli cooked al dente.

The Angel Hair with Clam Sauce, on the menu as an appetizer, came as a full portion ($24) of delicate pasta in a light white clam sauce with a little bite thanks to crushed red peppers. I could have done without the bite to more fully enjoy the delicate flavor of the clams. The pasta was offset by two Little Neck clams in the shell.

I enjoyed a glass of chardonnay with the appetizers and a glass of Lindeman Shiraz Cabernet blend with my steak, each priced at $9. My husband had two scotch and sodas ($10 each). Our tab with tax totaled $144.95.

Gregory Lerner, who grew up in Rye Brook and now lives in Port Chester, waited on us and provided the same excellent service he has been giving at Giorgio’s for 15 years.

There is no wine list at Giorgio’s, but the restaurant does offer a number of wines by the glass (Chianti, Pinot Grigio and White Zinfandel besides what I had) and a small but good selection of wines from California and Italy by the bottle (Cabernet, Chianti, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay), “the most popular and drinkable wines,” according to Canzoniero. Restaurant review

Same quality cuisine at Giorgio’s after 25 years wine for which a $20 corkage fee will be charged. That’s actually not a bad idea if you think ahead because we had a bottle of Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio on our second visit and, while it was a good selection, it was pricey at $48.

We had no room for dessert on our first visit but ordered the homemade cheesecake ($9) on our second because we heard Giorgio’s mother whips it up. Made with cream cheese and ricotta cheese, it’s creamy, relatively light and delectable.

It’s garnished with strawberries and the plate is decorated with strawberry and raspberry sauce.

Also on our second visit, my husband loved the roasted red pepper and anchovies ($13) appetizer. The anchovies aren’t too fishy and the peppers, roasted on site and topped with olive oil, are lovely.

The Caesar salad ($9), too, is fantastic, the dressing made from the traditional recipe using real parmesan cheese and croutons made on the premises from the Terranova bread. The only thing that would make it better is if it were prepared tableside.

I can also rave about the Shrimp Meuniere (spelled incorrectly on the menu) at $24. You get four large shrimp in a tangy lemon butter sauce with capers.

Like the others, this entrée is served with vegetables.

Décor, chefs, etc.

Giorgio’s looks classy even from the outside. The creamcolored building is clapboard on the bottom and stucco on the top with navy trim and awnings.

“Giorgio’s” stands out in fancy while lettering on the awning over the front door and script “G’s” decorate the window awnings on either side. Lanterns flank the navy front door, which serves a decorative purpose only.

Entering the restaurant from the parking lot off Ellendale Avenue, the small dining room to your right is painted deep red with oil paintings on the walls, beige brocade window treatment and plants on the sill in front of a large window. Tablecloths are white over beige and china is white. Wooden chairs have beige seats and beige brocade fabric backs. A chandelier in the center of the room and small colonial style shaded lights on the walls provide subtle lighting. Candles with shades and fancy olive oil bottles adorn the tables.

Across the way there is a long bar with black granite top and bar stools with green, orange and yellow fabric seats.

A large mirror covers the wall behind it. The bar is currently decorated for Christmas with red poinsettias, a Santa and a wreath. Two tables are set up in the bar for anyone who chooses to eat there. A total of 40 people can dine downstairs.

Red velvet bows, old-fashioned Santas and a snowman holding a sign that reads “Let it Snow” decorate the dining room.

Earth tone tweed carpeting covers the floor downstairs and the long stairway to the large party room upstairs. Once upstairs, the room to the left, which is used for regular customers on the weekends, is offset by green and gold carpeting. The beige motif and chair fabric is carried through here with framed prints on brownish walls.

The other side of the divided upstairs room has a small bar, stone fireplace and hard wood floor. An artificial Christmas tree stands in the corner while red and green garland decorates the mantle. The restaurant can accommodate catered parties for up to 100 people.

Besides Giorgio, the chef is Ecuadorian-born Moises Tenesaca of Port Chester. He has been with the restaurant for 15 years. While he likes to cook, Canzoniero’s strength is managing his staff and dealing with customers.

Originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Canzoniero came to Port Chester at age 23. Both of his parents were from Italy.

When he came to this country, Giorgio worked at the Rye Town Hilton for 10 years as a waiter at the hotel’s Penfield’s Restaurant and then as manager at Umberto’s in Rye, both defunct, before he decided to go out on his own.

Canzoniero and his second wife of seven years live in Rye Brook. She often bartends on weekends. They have a 4-yearold son Sebastian. Giorgio also has a son Christian, 29, who is manager at Last Licks in the Rye Ridge Shopping Center.

Hours and parking Giorgio’s is open Tuesday through Sunday from 5 to 10 p.m. The restaurant also does catering. Free parking is available in a small private lot behind the restaurant or on the street.
