As we approach the end of summer, it's crucial for both employers and employees to gear up for a smooth transition back to the regular work routine. With kids returning to school, summer vacations winding down, and college-bound students leaving the nest, this period marks a significant shift in many families' schedules. This transition presents a unique opportunity for businesses to foster a sense of reengagement and renewed focus within their workforce.

We prepared a few tips and guidelines to help with your transition:

1. Open Communication: Employers and employees alike should prioritize open and transparent communication during this transition. Employers should express their expectations for the post-summer period while being empathetic to the challenges employees might face. This could include addressing potential scheduling adjustments or any changes in remote work arrangements.

2. Flexibility: Recognize that some employees may still have ongoing childcare needs or personal matters to attend to as schools reopen. Offering flexible work arrangements, such as staggered start times or remote work options, can demonstrate your commitment to employee well-being and work-life balance.

3. Reestablishing Routines: The end of summer often disrupts established routines. Encourage employees to reestablish their work routines and help them get back on track. This might involve setting clear goals and expectations for the upcoming months, fostering a sense of purpose and direction.

4. Back-to-School Support: For employees with school-age children, returning to school can be both exciting and challenging. Consider offering resources or workshops that provide guidance on managing family and work commitments during this transition. This proactive approach showcases your commitment to supporting your employees as they navigate this change.

5. Reflect and Reset: The end of summer is a great time to reflect on the accomplishments of the year so far and set new goals for the coming months. Consider organizing team meetings to discuss achievements, lessons learned, and aspirations for the remainder of the year. This can help reenergize employees and foster a collective sense of purpose.

6. Employee Recognition: Acknowledge the efforts employees have put in throughout the year. Consider recognizing their dedication and hard work with a small gesture, whether it's a simple thank-you note, a team lunch, or a personalized token of appreciation. This can significantly boost morale and motivation.

7. Employee Development: As employees settle back into their routines, consider offering opportunities for professional development. Whether it's training sessions, workshops, or skill-building programs, investing in your employees' growth can lead to increased job satisfaction and enhanced performance.

8. Team-Building Activities: Organize team-building activities to strengthen interpersonal relationships within the workplace. Such activities can help employees reconnect after summer break, fostering a sense of camaraderie and collaboration.

The end of summer marks a transitional period that presents both challenges and opportunities for employers and employees. By prioritizing open communication, flexibility, and supportive initiatives, businesses can facilitate a seamless reengagement process and set the stage for a productive and successful remainder of the year.

WESTMORELAND COUNTY MANUFACTURERS’ MOST VALUABLE PRODUCT: CAREERS

Ask most residents of Westmoreland County about the fourth week of May this year and they’ll tell you it was just like any other. The Pirates hosted the Rangers for a 3-game homestand. Students and relatives started to trickle in from out of town in preparation for the observance of Memorial Day. But it was anything but ordinary for the community members packed into an auditorium on Old Route 30 in Irwin.

Everyone had gathered to celebrate the latest recipients of Grow Westmoreland’s and Achieving True Self’s scholarship and grant program, which totaled over $20,000 in awards this year. By the end of the ceremony, these organizations had distributed 11 Career Startup Scholarships, 13 Tools of the Trade Grants, and 3 Achieving True Self Scholarships. These awards are given to Westmoreland County students who have demonstrated outstanding community engagement and achievement and plan to continue their education or enter the workforce.

This is just one of the many efforts that our region’s business leaders are taking to develop the next generation of skilled workers to ensure our leading industries particularly manufacturing and agriculture are equipped with the best and brightest talent for years to come. Bolstering our area’s workforce is critical to shoring up our local communities that are wrestling with population decline and the ensuing erosion of the tax base and challenges associate with an aging citizenry. The best way to address these issues is showing younger residents the tremendous opportunities that await them right here in Westmoreland County.

Fortunately, our region’s manufacturers have a great pitch for young job seekers. For over a century, U.S. Steel has been producing the American-made products and materials that build our country’s homes, cars, appliances, and more right here in the Mon Valley supporting thousands of good-paying jobs across the greater Pittsburgh area. In Greensburg, General Carbide builds finished tooling, wear parts, and other components for an array of markets, including the automotive, aerospace, and oil and gas industries. The company also administers an internship program for high schoolers looking to pursue a career in manufacturing.

Sustaining these critical and innovative companies requires a steady supply of skilled labor, and that is why local entities like the Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce and the Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Board are dedicated to directing and providing prospective workers with the tools they need to succeed while helping our businesses attract and retain top talent. For example, the Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Board provides a wealth of resources for job seekers, including job training programs, career and technical education curricula, and assistance related to dislocated workers and vocational rehabilitation. The Board also shares employment information, including average wages and annual job demand, for high-priority industries, such as advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and transportation and logistics. This is part of a broader effort to leave no stone unturned when it comes to building out our regional workforce and making sure western Pennsylvania remains competitive on the national and international stage.

To illustrate how these efforts pay off, consider an event that took place a couple weeks before Grow Westmoreland’s awards ceremony. Governor Josh Shapiro joined political and business leaders to announce Re:Build Manufacturing’s $81 million investment to create the New Kensington Advanced Manufacturing Park and 300 new jobs in Westmoreland County. It’s thrilling to think that one day, one of the scholarship recipients in that Irwin auditorium may lay claim to one of those 300 jobs.

No one wants to imagine a child that is worried about where they will live or who will take care of them, but sadly there are children in Westmoreland County that live that fear being placed in the foster system.

Fortunately, we have groups like CASA, complete with kind people in our neighborhoods that are willing to be the voice for children. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) was chosen as the September Non -Profit of the Month because of the devotion they provide to changing a child’s story.

What is CASA?

CASA of Westmoreland, Inc., is a volunteer-based organization providing a voice in the courts on behalf of abused and neglected children in Westmoreland County. The recommendations of these volunteers assist the courts in determining the child’s placement in safe, permanent, and nurturing homes.

CASA of Westmoreland, Inc. (Court Appointed Special Advocates) was initiated by a group of community members, led by Family Court Judge Christopher Feliciani, who recognized the need for a CASA program to advocate for the most vulnerable members of Westmoreland County’s community. Judge Feliciani believed that CASA would be the best solution for the then 330 children living in foster care due to severe abuse and/or neglect. This initiative led to the appointment of a steering committee, and then a Board of Directors. With support from the Westmoreland County Commissioners and many community members, CASA of Westmoreland, Inc. was incorporated in 2006 and recognized as a 501 (c) 3 organization, and opened its doors to start advocating for children in 2007.

Who is CASA?

The CASA office is located on the 4th floor of the Westmoreland County Courthouse annex at the opposite end of family court. Nine employees commit their time to the mission including Executive Director, Mitch Samick and Development Director, Evan Markowitz. Anyone that knows the staff here, recognizes that they are the kindest group that is passionate about their vision for children in our county.

The 501(c)3 is led by a twelve member Board of Directors with Janeen Moffa (First Summit Bank) as President Chris Mohler-King (Sendell Motors) as Vice-President.

CASA has been a member of the Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce for over fourteen years and are very active in our organization.

Lasting Impacts

Children with a Court Appointed Special Advocate are less likely to spend long periods in foster care, more likely to find a permanent home, less likely to re care, and more likely to pass all their classes in school.

Volunteering with CASA

A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is a specially trained community volunteer who is appointed by a Family Court Judge to provide consistent and caring support on behalf of an innocent child going through the family court system due to abuse and/or neglect by parent(s) or guardian(s).

Chamber’s Financial Wellness & News for September!

EXPANDING MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS

In the past couple years, many employers have expanded their company’s mental health benefits as a show of support for potential jobseekers, employees and their families. The intention is to help promote employee wellbeing through better access and improved benefit levels for those feeling stressed about personal or work-life matters.

Workers seem to appreciate the efforts and are taking advantage of the services. Some of the changes business owners are making include:

• Increasing access to mental health services through methods like telehealth

• An expansion of access to in-network mental health providers

• Reduced cost sharing for mental healthcare visits

• The addition or expansion of employee assistance programs for mental health services

• Access to yoga, meditation and mindfulness sessions at the workplace or home

Providing apps that support wellness, focusing on fitness, sleep and relaxation

By addressing issues like stress and anxiety in a more proactive fashion, employers can reduce or even eliminate costly treatment for conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and cardiac problems. The small financial investment the employer makes now can often save substantial costs in the future.

The Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce offers its members access to My Benefit Advisor as a solution for employee benefits, including voluntary offerings. For more information about My Benefit Advisor, visit our website at wccc.mybenefitadvisor.com or contact Craig Pritts at (800) 377-3539.

What a tremendous grand opening and ribbon cutting event at Mind Dojo in Irwin!

We applaud Justin and Corey for their commitment to provide holistic care for those in need of mental health services in our community! Their journey to establishing Mind Dojo stemmed from their own personal experiences and realization that there was a need for this service in our neck of the woods.

Their new space on Hill Drive is just magnificent! It’s a mix of contemporary yet still cozy.

A special thanks for Congresswoman Summer Lee and County Commissioner Ted Kopas for their presence at this grand opening.
