PENNSYLVANIA FREE ENTERPRISE WEEK (PFEW) HOSTS 104 WESTMORELAND COUNTY STUDENTS Your Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce is all about business! We love supporting not only local business, but anything that educates our youth about business and future employment opportunities right here in Westmoreland County. That’s why for years we’ve supported Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW). This award-winning program teaches students to understand and celebrate our American private enterprise system and provides a unique, hands-on learning experience

that helps students develop the vital skills businesses need to succeed. This summer, 104 students from Derry, Franklin Regional, Greater Latrobe, Greensburg Central Catholic, Hempfield Area, Ligonier Valley, Monessen, Mt. Pleasant, Southmoreland and Yough high schools joined over 2,000 students from across the state to participate in the 40th annual PFEW summer program recently concluded in Williamsport.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE October is the month we celebrate Columbus Day and Halloween. It is also the 2nd month of autumn with leaves changing colors and falling from their perch among the branches, and we usually experience the first frost of the year.

But there is a lot more to October: Adopt A Shelter Dog Month – According to the ASPCA, at least 12 million dogs go to shelters each year. Many, more than half, are euthanized due to lack of space and resources, and lack of willing adopters. Adopting a dog is a great thing. Go to a site like petfinder.com and look for your local shelter. There will be information posted by the shelter about the dog’s temperament, whether it gets along with kids, other animals, etc. Then complete some research on the breed, and schedule a visit to the shelter to see if this dog is the right fit for you and your family. If not, try again. Your new best friend is waiting for you!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month - Victims of domestic violence know what it’s like to live in fear or lose themselves behind a facade. But there is help and resources available to victims. The website for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, www.ncadv.org, is a good place to start. It is full of information, news, updates, events and postings. Domestic Violence is an issue that should not be focused on for just one month. Thousands of people are victims of domestic violence and more needs to be done to help them, even if all that can be offered at the time is different shelter and someone to listen.

October 20th: Spirit Day – Spirit Day isn’t a holiday, but a day of remembrance declared by the people, supporters, of the LGBTQ community. It is a day where people will wear purple in memory of the recent gay teen suicides. Many of these teens suffered from horrific homophobic abuse in their schools or at home, or in some cases, both. The decision to wear purple is because purple represents SPIRIT in the LGBTQ flag. The goal is for people to know that times will get better, and there will be people there to love them and who respect them. At PFEW, students form management teams of approximately eighteen students and run their own manufacturing company, competing against other student companies. Throughout the week, world class speakers address the students on a wide variety of topics relevant to the business world and their personal and professional development.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month – The lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is 1 in 8 and it’s the second leading cause of cancer death for American women. Early detection is crucial. Self-exams can be done at home very easily and if you find something that feels abnormal, call your doctor and make an appointment. They’ll do a manual exam and likely order a mammogram to make sure there’s not something they missed. Although October has been designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, women and men should be on the offensive and stay aware of their bodies.

National Arts & Humanities Month – Established in 1993 to encourage Americans to engage and explore the facets of the arts and humanities and other cultures, it is now celebrated every October. It is the United States’ largest annual celebration of the arts. The NAH has four primary goals: 1. To create a national, state, and local focus on the arts and humanities through the media; 2. To encourage the active participation of individuals, as well as arts, humanities, and other interested organizations nationwide; 3. To provide an opportunity for federal, state, and local business, government and civic leaders to declare their support for the arts and humanities; and 4. To establish a highly visible vehicle for raising public awareness about the arts and humanities.

The program is taught by volunteer practitioners from the PA business community, and each year, over 200 volunteers are needed to put on this program. Students attend via a $625 scholarship donated “I was correct in thinking that I would learn about business, but I have by a local business, foundation, civic organization or individual. This learned so much more in addition to that. Milestones

Westmoreland County Community College held a ribbon cutting ceremony August 17 to mark the renovation of its Public Safety Training Center (PSTC) located in Smithton. The PSTC provides education, training, certification and support services for the emergency response community including firefighters, police officers, emergency service workers and military personnel. The renovation included an addition to the building to house two new classrooms, a break room for students, and individual showers designed for firefighters and others following their training.

A ribbon cutting celebration was held on August 22 to commemorate the opening of Somerset Trust Company’s 35th branch, located in the North Huntingdon Walmart.

The new office hosts several teller windows and a customer service office for opening new accounts and handling loan applications. An independent community bank headquartered in Somerset, Somerset Trust Company has locations throughout Westmoreland, Fayette, Somerset, Cambria and Bedford counties, as well as in Grantsville, MD.

On August 23, Keller Williams Realty-Westmoreland celebrated their grand opening at the Mountain View Financial Center in Unity Township (the former Mountain View Interiors furniture store at Route 30 and Village Drive). The celebration included the unveiling of a portrait of late golfing legend Arnold Palmer created at last year’s Westmoreland Arts and Heritage Festival. The unique mural, fashioned from rows of colored gumballs in clear tubes, will be displayed in the lobby of the center. Tony Ferry, owner, invites residents to stop in and see the art and take pictures with it.

NexTier Bank celebrated the opening of their new Greensburg Loan Office on August 23.

The office is located at the Mountain View Financial Center in Unity Township (the former Mountain View Interiors furniture store at Route 30 and Village Drive). NexTier Bank is a combination of several longstanding community banks – Eureka Bank, Farmers & Merchants Bank of Western PA, Manor Bank, and NexTier Bank. They boast over 350 years of combined experience at their nearly 30 locations in Armstrong, Butler, Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties.

All fun aside though, you can actually learn a lot about business from playing in a bowling league. Read on for some of the key lessons you can learn on the lanes.

Heartland Payment Systems Meet our Member Spotlight for October: Amy Miller, Territory Manager with Heartland Payment Systems.

Teamwork Is Everything In team bowling, it is not just each player's individual score that determines the final result, but also the combined scores of all teammates. If one player isn't performing well, the other team members must make up for the deficiency in order to win. It is much the same in business. When working on a team project, each member is responsible not just for their own work, but for the completion of the project as a whole.

Heartland Payment Systems is a merchant services, gift card, loyalty and payroll provider. As Territory Manager, Amy educates merchants regarding credit card processing so that she can help them make sense of that part of their business.

“I provide honest and transparent pricing and solutions while keeping the merchant’s best interest at heart,” she says. She is also tasked with managing a team of relationship managers.

Scheduling Is Important From practices to tournaments, it is important that every member of a bowling team be on the same page in terms of scheduling, and business is no different.

Between company-wide meetings, team meetings and individual projects, your employees have a lot on their plates, so it is important to provide detailed schedules to help everyone manage their work efficiently.

Amy finds it personally rewarding to have a job where she can feel good about how she’s helped the business owners she meets. “I meet with merchants every day that don’t want to discuss credit card processing because they don’t understand it or have been burned by another processor,” she explains. “I love being able to help them and eliminate that fear. I usually walk away from the meeting with an understanding of the merchant’s business and their goals and I get to help make a positive influence on their business.”

Team Changes Are Sometimes Necessary It's never easy to say goodbye to a bowling teammate, but sometimes this is necessary to ensure the ongoing success for your team. For example, a teammate could get injured, or a scheduling conflict could arise. In the business world, an employee could resign or get fired, or the scope of your project may change, resulting in the need for different team members. When making changes to your team, be sure to keep the rest of the team informed to avoid your team feeling blindsided.

What does Amy enjoy most about her Chamber membership? She says, “I enjoy the networking opportunities and committees I have been able to be involved with. I have met so many wonderful people through the Chamber. I love that the Chamber gives me opportunities to hear great speakers that I wouldn’t have heard had I not been a member. The Chamber helps keep me up to date on issues and information that are important to business owners in Westmoreland County which typically helps me grow my business. It also helps me to find businesses that I can trust when I need someone to do business with.”

When she’s not working, Amy enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters. She rides and shows horses alongside her daughters, and serves as the head coach for the WVU English Equestrian Team.

Momentum Is Real In sports, including bowling, many players talk about momentum. When your team is performing well, the energy that provides makes it easier for the rest of your team to succeed. Similarly, poor performance can be demoralizing and hurt others' ability to perform well. In business environments, it can be easy to get caught up in minor setbacks, causing them to snowball into much larger issues. When this happens, take a few moments to step back and look at the big picture.

Even a brief pause can be enough to break negative momentum so that you can turn it around.
