DIDYOU KNOW?

Now that football season is upon us and the leaves are starting to drop, this time can provide some valuable lessons for small business owners looking to build a winning organization.

Here are 10 key strategies that can help any business owner achieve success:

1. Set Clear Goals: Just like a football team aims to score points, a business should have clear objectives. Define your short-term and long-term goals to provide direction for your organization.

2. Teamwork: In football, no one player can win the game alone. In business, foster a collaborative culture where your team works together to achieve common goals.

3. Develop a solid business plan that outlines your strategies, target audience, marketing tactics, and financial projections. This plan should serve as your playbook. Strong Leadership:

4. Effective leadership is crucial in both football and business. Be a strong leader who inspires and motivates your team to perform at their best.

5. Adaptability: Football teams adjust their strategies based on the opponent and game circumstances. Similarly, adapt to market changes, customer preferences, and emerging trends in your industry. Continuous Learning: Football teams study their opponents to gain a competitive edge. Stay updated with industry trends, technology, and best practices to remain competitive.

6. Effective Communication: Clear communication is essential on the field and in the office. Ensure that your team understands their roles and responsibilities, and encourage open dialogue.

8. Training and Development: Just as athletes practice to improve their skills, invest in the training and development of your employees to enhance their capabilities.

9. Customer Focus: Understand your customers' needs and preferences. Tailor your products or services to meet their demands and provide exceptional customer service.

10. Data-Driven Decision Making: Football teams analyze data to make informed decisions during games. Utilize data and analytics to make strategic decisions that drive business growth.

Remember, winning in business is not just about shortterm victories but also about sustained success. Continuously assess your strategies and adapt as needed to stay competitive and achieve long-term goals.

I am honored to serve as the President/CEO of the Westmorland County Chamber of Commerce, and I am excited to share with you the ongoing efforts and initiatives we are undertaking to address the pressing issue of workforce development in our community. Our commitment goes beyond ceremonial ribbon and event hosting; it's about actively contributing to the prosperity and growth of our local business community. Here are a few items and needs associated with workforce development and job placement that we are tirelessly working on:

Legislative Advocacy: We firmly believe that staying engaged with federal and state legislation related to workforce development is crucial. By advocating for policies that support job creation, training programs, and employment opportunities, we aim to make a significant positive impact on our community.

Collaboration with Non-Profits: The integration of non-profit organizations within the Chamber office is a significant milestone. This collaborative effort allows us to embark on more comprehensive workforce development initiatives and provide invaluable resources for our residents seeking employment.

Job Seeker Training and Education: We recognize the importance of offering training and educational programs for job seekers. Equipping them with the necessary skills and qualifications for available positions is a key priority. This includes conducting job readiness workshops, offering resume building support, providing interview coaching, and implementing upskilling programs.

Business-Community Partnerships: Strengthening the relationships between our local businesses and the community at large is of paramount importance. By encouraging businesses to engage in mentorship programs, offer internship opportunities, and facilitate apprenticeships, we are creating clear pathways for residents to secure gainful employment.

Access to Job Listings and Networking: We understand the challenges job seekers face in navigating the employment landscape. To address this, we are committed to providing a centralized platform or resource where individuals can easily access our website job listings and networking opportunities. This could take the form of an online portal, regular job fairs, or networking events.

While we acknowledge that this is not an easy fix by any means, we remain steadfast in our efforts to help our business community Connect, Grow, and Engage! Together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of our community members by ensuring they have the resources and opportunities they need to secure employment and contribute meaningfully to our local economy.

Thank you for your unwavering support. We look forward to continuing this journey with you and driving positive change in our community.

Warm regards,

WORKFORCE,WORKFORCE AND MORE WORKFORCE!

Chamber Champion of Baltzer Meyer Historical

Preserving the Rich Heritage

The Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce is delighted to recognize the Baltzer Meyer Historical Society as our Chamber Champion of the Month for October. This nonprofit organization, founded in 1993, has dedicated itself to the preservation and study of Old Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, with a particular emphasis on the heritage of Southwestern Pennsylvania families. Today, we shine a spotlight on their remarkable efforts in safeguarding the history and memories of our cherished region.

The Baltzer Meyer Historical Society's mission is as noble as it is vital – the study, preservation, and sharing of the records of the settlements of Westmoreland County. While many historical organizations focus solely on political and military history, this society's scope goes beyond that. Their interests encompass the lives of the families who made Westmoreland County their home. It's about understanding the people, their stories, and the collective tapestry of our shared past.

What's truly remarkable is the society's commitment to growth and inclusivity. Membership is open to all who share an interest in Westmoreland County's history and heritage. It's heartening to note that their members extend beyond our local community, with enthusiasts joining from as far away as Australia. This global connection underscores the universal appeal of preserving history for the benefit of future generations. The society operates from offices conveniently located approximately three miles west of downtown Greensburg in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County. Here, a dedicated team of volunteers and historians tirelessly work to curate and expand their collection of historical records. New data is continually added to their archives, ensuring that the story of Westmoreland County remains vivid and accessible to all.

Chamber the Month Historical Society

Heritage of Old Westmoreland County

Two historic buildings, the Harrold Schoolhouse and the Old Zion Lutheran Church, stand as physical testaments to the society's commitment to preservation. The Harrold Schoolhouse, built in 1881, holds the memories of generations of students who received their education within its walls. The Old Zion Lutheran Church, constructed in 1884, witnessed countless community gatherings and milestones. These historic buildings, situated on the original 158-acre tract of land known as "Good Purpose," were preempted by early settlers for the specific purposes of church and school. Today, the Baltzer Meyer Historical Society is working diligently to preserve these valuable structures and transform them into spaces that can be used for museums, classrooms, and community events. This endeavor ensures that the history they represent continues to serve as a source of inspiration and education for present and future generations.

In closing, we would like to emphasize the importance of supporting the Baltzer Meyer Historical Society in their mission. As guardians of our past, they play a pivotal role in preserving the memories, history, and heritage of Old Westmoreland County. Donations can be made through their website, www.baltzermeyer.com to ensure that their tireless efforts continue to flourish.

The Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce commends the Baltzer Meyer Historical Society for their unwavering dedication to our shared history. They are true Chamber Champions, and we are proud to recognize them as our Chamber Champion of the Month.

Thank you for your invaluable contributions to preserving the legacy of Westmoreland County.

Non-Profit of the Westmoreland Walks,

Westmoreland Walks: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Our Community

In the spirit of highlighting outstanding organizations making a meaningful impact in our community, we are thrilled to introduce Westmoreland Walks as our Chamber's Non-Profit Organization of the Month. Westmoreland Walks is a remarkable 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission deeply rooted in raising awareness about breast cancer, funding crucial research, and providing unwavering support to local breast cancer patients and their families.

A Heartfelt Beginning - In 2002, Westmoreland Walks emerged from the collective passion and commitment of a small group of women who had experienced the profound effects of breast cancer firsthand. Some had bravely battled the disease themselves, while others had stood alongside friends during their fight. United by a shared desire to make a difference, these women set out on a mission that remains at the core of Westmoreland Walks today:

 Raise Awareness: Westmoreland Walks strives to shine a spotlight on breast cancer within Westmoreland County, ensuring that knowledge and understanding of the disease are widespread.

 Fund Research: The organization allocates funds towards breast cancer research grants in Pennsylvania, contributing to the critical effort to find a cure.

 Provide Support: Westmoreland Walks extends direct support to local breast cancer patients, survivors, and their families, offering them a lifeline during their challenging journey.

Community-Powered Impact

What sets Westmoreland Walks apart is its incredible reliance on the support of sponsors, in-kind donors, dedicated volunteers, and our local community members. This collective effort allows the organization to take substantial steps towards addressing breast cancer's challenges within Westmoreland County and across Pennsylvania.

Events That Make a Difference - Throughout the year, Westmoreland Walks organizes various fundraising events to support its mission. In 2022, these included events like the "Passionately Pink Fashion Show," "Spa Serenity Day," "Give Breast Cancer the Boot" Fundraiser (new for 2022), "Pink Ribbon Walk," and "SereniTea Fundraiser." These events not only raise funds but also bring our community together in the fight against breast cancer.

the Month

Walks, Inc.

Making Every Dollar Count - Since its inception in 2002, Westmoreland Walks has raised an impressive sum of over $900,000. What's even more commendable is how they meticulously allocate these funds to maximize their impact:

Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC): Westmoreland Walks is a dedicated partner to PBCC, having donated a substantial $738,000 to PBCC initiatives. This support aids in legislative advocacy, educational programming, and unique outreach initiatives focused on breast cancer survivors and their families.

Local Initiatives: While a significant portion of their funds goes to PBCC, Westmoreland Walks also directs resources to initiatives closer to home. Their Spa Serenity Day provides much-needed pampering and care to local women diagnosed with breast cancer. Additionally, their Pink Ribbon Scholarship offers financial support to graduating high school seniors whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer, nurturing the next generation of advocates.

Pink Angel Fund: In 2013, Westmoreland Walks established "The Pink Angel Fund" to assist families facing financial difficulties during breast cancer treatment. This fund has provided relief through insurance copayments, necessary items like lymphedema sleeves, and even essentials such as groceries, meals, and housekeeping for patients too ill to care for their families.

Westmoreland Walks exemplifies the power of grassroots efforts, demonstrating how a dedicated group of individuals, with the support of the community, can make a profound impact in the fight against breast cancer. We salute their unwavering commitment to raising awareness, funding research, and providing crucial support to those affected by this disease. As the Chamber's Non-Profit Organization of the Month, Westmoreland Walks serves as an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the positive change that can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose.

Chamber’s Financial Wellness & News for October!

Embracing Family Friendly Benefits

In today’s work environment, the line between personal and professional life is becoming increasingly blurred. As a result, employees are seeking more comprehensive benefits that accommodate their family responsibilities and foster a healthy work-life balance. More employers today have begun to understand that an expansion of family-friendly benefits above and beyond federal law requirements is a key facet to protecting the physical and mental health of their workers.

Family friendly benefits are essential in attracting and retaining top talent, as they demonstrate an organization’s commitment to supporting its employees beyond the workplace. Employers can utilize a few key strategies in order to effectively include family -friendly benefits in their employee benefit package, which can help lead to positive impacts on employee well-being, job satisfaction and overall organizational success.

• Flexible Work Arrangements

One of the most fundamental principles of family-friendly benefits is that of flexible work arrangements. This can allow employees to better balance their professional and family obligations, and include options like telecommuting, flextime, compressed workweeks or job sharing. Offering such flexibility not only enhances employee happiness but also improves productivity and job satisfaction. By focusing on results rather than strict office hours, employers can demonstrate a trust of their employees to manage their time and deliver the required performance, leading to a more motivated and engaged workforce.

• Paid Parental Leave

Paid Parental Leave plays an important role in promoting family-friendly policies. Providing adequate time off and compensation for new mothers and fathers allows employees to bond with their children during those formative early months. Beyond the emotional benefits, paid parental leave also contributes to increased employee loyalty, reduced turnover and a positive employer brand that attracts top talent seeking a supportive work environment.

• On-Site or Subsidized Childcare

Supporting working parents by offering on-site or subsidized childcare is a game-changer for many employees. By alleviating the stress of finding reliable childcare, employers can demonstrate their commitment to the well-being and needs of their employees. Additionally, on-site childcare can improve attendance, reduce lateness, and boost overall productivity. When on-site childcare may not be feasible, partnering with nearby childcare centers and offering financial assistance can still provide valuable support to working parents.

• Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)

Dependent Care FSAs allow employees to set aside pre-tax dollars to cover eligible childcare expenses, such as daycare, after-school programs, or summer camps. By offering this benefit, employers help reduce the financial burden of childcare costs for employees, making it easier for them to manage work and family responsibilities without sacrificing their financial stability.

• Elder Care Support

Family friendly benefits should not be limited to childcare, organizations should also consider elder care support for employees with aging parents or family members in need of assistance. Offering resources, counseling and referrals for elder care services can provide much needed relief to employees navigating these complex family situations.

• Work-Life Balance Programs and Resources

Implementing work-life balance programs and resources can help employees better manage their personal and professional commitments. This may include wellness programs, stress management workshops, counseling services or flexible time-off policies. Employers can encourage a healthy work-life balance by promoting self-care and providing avenues for employees to recharge and rejuvenate, ultimately leading to increased productivity and reduced burnout.

It was a scorcher of a day, but September 6th was the perfect day for our chamber members to celebrate Hempfield Township's 250th anniversary at Hempfield Park!

Thanks Doug Weimer and the staff of Hempfield Township and Parks and Recreation for a lovely "Party in the Park" as a chamber member event.

Hempfield will continue the year celebrating the 250th anniversary with a time capsule and the Founder's Gala on October 19th.

We were highly impressed at the member event at Johnny’s Seafood Shack, the new cafe adjoined to the Western Edge Seafood Outlet! Our members tasted some lobster Mac and cheese and enjoyed some shrimp tacos for Taco Tuesday!

There is NO doubt that the staff here is passionate about what they do and so very knowledgeable about their product!

The outlet store is open daily, and the cafe is open WednesdaySunday for dine in or take out!

If you love fresh seafood, stop in to the store/cafe located right behind the mall and talk to the friendly staff: Mark, Sunny, Chris, Shawn, and Selena!

Danke (Thank you in German) Integrity Retirement Solutions! Thursday evenings Octoberfest BASH was phenomenal!

Over 60 members turned out to network at the Business After Scheduled Hours hosted by Kevin and Jeanie Bock. There was great food and music to accompany the great comradery. Integrity Retirement Solutions partnered with two of our other members for drinks: Bella Terra Vineyards and Quinn Brewing.

It was a beautiful evening and we truly appreciate the effort that was put in to make this September BASH a true success!

The Women of Westmoreland did it again at the September fall luncheon!

We were inspired by the narrative of Hanifa, a victim of an acid burn, who’s positive attitude and drive for change just radiated. She has impacted government change and awareness for medical needs for women. Most of all she expressed that the idea that change starts with helping one person. Thank you Hanifa for sharing your incredible story with us.

Thank you to Redstone who was our sponsor for this luncheon and made this event possible for our members. We appreciate all that you do for the senior community of Westmoreland County!
