Class of 2020 Valedictorian Marissa Alejandra Martinez Suarez

Ranked first in the Class of 2020, Valedictorian Marissa Alejandra Martinez Suarez is a young lady with great achievements during high school and an eye on an exciting future! She described her plans by saying, “Next year I will be attending the University of Denver and be involved in their Puksta, 1-GenU, and Honors program where I hope to learn more about and challenge our system. As an agent for social change, I want to focus on bringing more representation in higher education, creating equitable access to resources, and empowering students for my Puksta project and use the skills I gain for my future. While at DU, I plan on majoring in History and possibly getting a double major in Political Science, while minoring in Ethnic Studies. I have been so blessed that one of the things that I will not have to worry about in the upcoming years is paying my way through college, as I have gotten scholarships from the Latinas First Foundation, Westminster 7:10 Rotary, Westminster Rotary, Colorado Council on High School/College Relations (CCHS/CR), WPS Foundation, Elevations Credit Union Foundation, White Rose Foundation, Colorado Clerks Association, and some institutional scholarships from DU that I now have a full ride!” Reflecting on high school, she described her favorite class, “I think my favorite class in high school would definitely have to be tied between History of the Americas (HOA) and IB World Literature. Linenberger, Lee, and Breaslain always found creative ways to teach about the past and relate to the present. Their classes allowed me to critically think and tie back to the question of ‘Why is this important?’ I loved the class discussion I had with my peers. I find that the best way to learn is from each other and hearing different perspectives. The interactiveness is what made their classes unique and pushed me to challenge my thoughts.” Suarez described a learning experience that impacted her thinking, “One of my biggest learning experiences came from my time in TRIO Upward Bound. I was at one of my lowest points during my senior year, and then, I met Ms. Olivia Hunte who was able to bring me back up. As I wrote about my past for scholarship essays, Ms. Olivia would challenge me to go deeper, so I could heal from my unspoken stories. Ms. Olivia taught me to look at my past with pride, take care of myself, and not let go of my dreams. For any underclassmen, I would definitely recommend joining TRIO; it is a program that allows you to grow and has such high benefits!” You may wonder what a student like Suarez does in her free time. She said, “One of my favorite things to do in my free time is taking naps. I find it rejuvenating, and it lets me let go of all my stresses through my dreams. In all sincerity, one of the things that I am trying to work on and have quite enjoyed is practicing self-care and remembering that I’m a human being. I have found peace through journaling, going on walks, or just hanging out with my sisters or my best friends Jason, Emily, and Cindy.” Throughout high school, Suarez was involved in many activities including: Latinas Increasing Political Strength (LIPS), Peer Mediation, TRIO Upward Bound, National Honor Society Secretary, Student Council, Mock Trial, Track, FFA Secretary, the University of Colorado Denver Pre-Collegiate Development Program, Cross Country Captain, and Club Unify. Along her path of achievement, Suarez credits teachers as mentors for her on her academic journey, she said, “I had many teachers help me out through my educational journey (Crabtree, Falconer, Breaslain, Romanowski, everyone from TRIO), but the two teachers I would say that stand out are Mr. Linenberger and Ms. Olivia. Mr. Linenberger was my Humanities, HOA, and because I couldn’t be in AVID because of my schedule, he took me under his wing as his ‘Student Assistant’ my senior year. I say ‘Student Assistant’ because he helped me out more than I helped him, except that one time I did grade papers. Mr. Linenberger has always been there to guide me, give advice, read my essays, and cheer me up. One of my favorite memories with him was when I accidentally spilled glitter all over his floor, and he didn’t yell at me or get upset. Mr. Linenberger is the most patient teacher I know, and although he never smiles, you can tell he cares a lot about his students. Ms. Olivia, I sadly only got the pleasure of working with her my senior year in TRIO; however, I consider her to be like my guardian angel. Ms. Olivia has such a vibrant personality it is almost impossible to feel down when you’re with her. When I wanted to give up on myself, she would not let me, she is so supportive. I really aspire to be like Ms. Olivia one day, she is such a hard worker, and somehow finds time to do it all!” Suarez also mentioned a mentor from her past, “One of the teachers that holds the most special place in my heart would be Ms. Sandy Roose. I can truly say that without her I would not be here today. When I was in the process of getting my residency in my younger years, she would drive me to school because my parents had a lot going on, wrote me letters of recommendation, and was there to comfort me in a time of such uncertainty. I have never met anyone as charismatic as her, and I am truly blessed to have met her.” As Suarez graduates and moves on with an exciting future, she leaves behind some words of advice for underclassmen: “During the hard times, never forget your why. Your purpose will drive you and never let anyone turn down your dreams. You are capable of great things! Trust in the hard work you’ve put in, and life will take you to amazing places!”
