Director’s Note Director’s Note

Dear Horizons Friends and Supporters,

First and foremost, thank you. Thank you for believing in our mission, thank you for supporting our work, and thank you for allowing us to provide such a meaningful and joyful program for our Horizons students. Just like our students, our program has evolved in many meaningful ways over the years, including this summer when we expanded to 135 students in Grades K-8. We also hosted our inaugural 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony where we pledged our continued support as our oldest students -- and our program -- venture into high school! This growth and the impactful summer we just concluded would not be possible without the loyal and generous support we receive from our Horizons at Westminster community.

As you review this report, I hope our core values of joy, community, exploration, and growth shine through. From the classroom, to the swimming pool, to the tennis courts, dance studio and dining hall, our students are trying new things, building strong connections, and becoming better citizens and students. I am immensely grateful for our exceptional staff, families, board members, volunteers, and donors -- like you -- who sustain our program and help us deliver on our mission. We are a better program because of you.

With gratitude

ACADEMICS

Academics continue to be the bedrock of our program. Throughout the summer, students learned and practiced essential skills in literacy, math, and STEAM with the aim of preparing for the school year ahead. Our classes were led by experienced and certified teachers and supported by college-aged assistant teachers and high school-aged counselors and CITs. We also employed two learning specialists to provide individual and small group interventions. Our 4:1 student-to-staff ratio ensured that each student received the individualized support they needed to make significant gains over our six weeks together.

FIELD TRIPS

This summer, our students explored the greater Hartford area on 12 different field trips: Connecticut Science Center, Matterhorn Mini Golf, Ron-a-Roll, IT Adventure, Fun City, Wadsworth Atheneum, Simsbury Public Library, Flamig Farm, Talcott Mountain Hike, Spare Time Bowling, New England Science & Sailing Center, and an 8 grade planned field trip to Six Flags to celebrate their promotion! th

Summer Program Summer Program

ENRICHMENTS

In addition to our rigorous academic curriculum, we provided our students with 30 different enrichment offerings over the course of the summer! Each day, our students participated in two enrichments, including art, dance, basketball, tennis, swimming, squash, volleyball, soccer, selfcare, LEGOs, reading, baking, flag football, wiffelball, kickball, bracelet making, planetarium visit, outdoor adventures, golf, speech & debate, yoga, frisbee golf, board games, news team, mindfulness, mock interviews, jump roping, chess, financial literacy, and boat building!

New Program Spotlights

New Program Spotlights New Program Spotlights

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT: FORENSIC SCIENCE

Our 7 and 8 graders became crime scene investigators for the day, thanks th th to Dr. Jen O’Brien, a forensic scientist. Dr. O’Brien set up a crime scene and our students completed a forensic analyst of all the possible clues. They also learned how to dust for and analyze fingerprints. All of their teachers were suspects, but once they completed their thorough investigation, they concluded that Ms. Abreu was the culprit!

FIELD TRIP: NEW ENGLAND SCIENCE & SAILING

Our middle schoolers traveled to Ocean Beach and set sail with New England Science and Sailing for one of the best field trips of the summer! Science came alive as students kayaked, snorkeled, searched for sea creatures, and explored the estuaries both in and out on the water. It was a perfect day, and we look forward to returning again next summer!

SPORTS ENRICHMENT: SQUASH

As a result of a generous offer by one of Westminster School’s squash coaches, our students were able to learn the sport during Saturday Academy sessions and weekly coaching during the summer. It turned out to be one of our favorite enrichments!

SPECIAL EVENT: 8 GRADE SIX FLAGS FIELD TRIP

th th th

This year, our 8 graders planned and executed a special trip before the promotion. The students had to manage a budget, secure chaperones, and schedule the day to ensure a successful and safe class trip to Six Flags. A special thanks to our 8 grade team for joining our 8 grade class on this special trip to celebrate!

CAREER FAIR

As we begin to design and implement a dedicated high school support program, we were excited to host our first annual Career Fair in July. We asked our middle schoolers at the beginning of the summer to list possible careers they would be interested in pursuing - and were fortunate to get an incredible group of local professionals to join us.

Our students were able to meet with an engineer, lawyer, politician, professional athlete, doctor, podcast host, news anchor, forensic scientist, police officer, video game designer, real estate agent, in addition to some incredible leaders from ESPN, Hartford Yard Goats, and Travelers!

HIGH SCHOOL READINESS

This summer, we continued to host weekly “Lunch & Learns” where middle schoolers were able to hear about different high school options, including Simsbury ABC, CREC and RSCO, boarding schools, and single gender schools.

Our middle schoolers also toured the campuses of Watkinson School and University of Hartford. We also hosted another successful mock interview day where students completed interviews with Westminster staff to help prepare for future school or career interviews!

WE WILL OFFICIALLY LAUNCH OUR HIGH SCHOOL SUPPORT PROGRAM FALL 2025

A MILESTONE MOMENT

On August 1 , we hosted our first-ever 8 Grade Promotion Ceremony marking a significant milestone for both the students and the program. The ceremony, which featured student speakers and family shout outs, celebrated the achievements of our program ’ s inaugural cohort as they prepare to enter high school. The majority of the 8 Grade class started as first graders when Horizons at Westminster launched in 2018, including Lilyana who shared in her speech, “ over the years, I have formed special bonds with my peers, counselors, and teachers, so when I say Horizons is my second home, I mean it with my whole heart.”

Our Horizons 8 grade class is attending a mix of public and private high schools in the area, including Jacob Flores (3 from left) who just started his 9 grade year at Westminster School! th rd th

We look forward to continuing to provide support and mentorship to our high school students as our Horizons program continues to grow.

School Year Program School Year Program

SATURDAY ACADEMIES

Horizons students came to Westminster School on five Saturdays throughout the school year for academic enrichment and to participate in a wide variety of activities on campus led by Westminster student volunteers. Join us for one of our 25-26 school year Saturday Academies on September 13, October 25, January 24, February 28, April 11, and May 9!

HOLIDAY PARTIES

This year, we invited Horizons students for an evening of trick-or-treating on Westminster’s campus! They visited the dorms and faculty houses before enjoying dinner with Westminster students. In December, Westminster students also hosted our holiday party for Horizons students and families at Moylan School complete with face painting, ornament making, and more.

This summer we hosted a visit from Horizons National leadership who conducted a comprehensive assessment of our program. On average, Horizons at Westminster ranked 4.9/5 on the assessment, including 49 five star ratings out of a total of 51 categories.

The Horizons at Westminster program demonstrates strong performance across all four domains of the Program Quality Assessment (PQA), creating a vibrant and supportive learning environment for students.

Key Strengths:

Smooth Transitions: Arrival, departure, and meal times are wellorganized and community-centered, reinforcing belonging and shared responsibility.

Horizons at Westminster operates under the 501(c)(3) status of Westminster School Horizons does not receive any direct financial support from Westminster School, but does receive substantial in-kind operational support, including administrative support, facility and equipment use, and supplies. Horizons at Westminster relies on raising funds independent of the school to cover staffing, programming, transportation, field trips and other costs. We also benefit from community volunteers who support program initiatives.

Horizons History Horizons History

1969: Westminster’s connection to Hartford began with SPHERE (Supplementary Program for Hartford Educational Reinforcement and Enrichment).

2002: Led by Todd & Mary Eckerson, the Crossroads Cooperative Learning Program (CCLP) emerged, followed by the Westminster Crossroads Learning Program (WCLP).

2017: Todd Eckerson proposed the launch of a Horizons program at Westminster School with Kathleen Devaney as founding Executive Director.

2018: Horizons at Westminster launched with one class of 15 first grade students.

2022: Horizons at Westminster Endowment was generously created from gifts received by Brad Raymond & Soledad O’Brien, Ben & Julie Wurts, and Madeleine & Börje Ekholm.

2025: Horizons reached its commitment to supporting 135 students in Grades K-8 --- and announced expansion of support for high schoolers.

After 43 years of dedication to Westminster School, Todd Eckerson retired this year. In honor of Todd’s retirement, many gifts were received to the Horizons at Westminster Endowed Fund.

We are very grateful to those who recognized Todd & Mary with a special and meaningful gift to Horizons in their honor:

We are excited to announce our inaugural fundraiser for Horizons at Westminster! It is the perfect time to gather and celebrate as we completed our first summer with a full K-8 academic program and announced our expansion to high school programming. We are also excited to celebrate Todd Eckerson’s retirement and honor the legacy of Hartford partnership work that Todd and Mary helped build during their 43 years at Westminster, culminating in our Horizons program that exists today. Please join us for a night of fun as we celebrate the incredible work that has brought the program to where it is today -- and all the exciting things to come!

“I give to Horizons for many reasons--I see the joy and engagement of children, the love and support from the staff and the palpable growth of the students. They make great improvements in their academic progress, they build confidence, and they find and develop passions through enrichment opportunities. All of these are reasons for supporting Horizons. But it is the way in which the program enriches Westminster that also fuels my support. Faculty, staff and Westminster students are recipients of the joy that the program generates and we learn, too, from our involvement. It is not a one way street; Horizons is a beautiful, mutually beneficial learning experience for every person connected in any way with the program. ”
