STUDY PATHWAYS Westminster Kingsway offers a variety of options post-GCSE. Options range from Level 2 to Level 4, giving you qualifications equivalent to GCSE all the way up to degree level. We offer a balance of academic and vocational pathways to ensure you can reach your goal, no matter the journey.

A Levels A Levels are a Level 3 qualification, usually studied over two years. Students are tested rigorously on three or four areas of interest. A Levels provide access to and preparation for Higher Education at some of the world’s top academic universities.

Vocational Diplomas & Certificates: BTEC & UAL BTEC, UAL (University of the Arts London) or other Vocational Diplomas enable you to develop practical skills that could help you secure a job in the future. Each course is made up of units. The number of units you will take depends on the level of the qualification that you

choose to study. You are assessed regularly during your course, so you can analyse and improve your own performance.

Foundation Learning Foundation Learning courses are vocational, personalised programmes at Entry and Level 1. You will gain Functional Skills or GCSEs in English, Maths and ICT, taught in a practical way using real-life situations. You will also benefit from personal and social development to prepare you for employment and working with other people.

Bridging Courses A Bridging Course is designed to help students progress onto a Level 3 course. At Westminster Kingsway College, we offer Bridging Courses at Level 1 and Level 2 in Art & Design, Business and E-business, Health & Social Care, Digital Media and Creative Media.

Apprenticeships As an apprentice, you are employed, trained and paid to work in a real job in a specific industry. You will work alongside

experienced staff to gain job-specific skills. At the same time – usually one day a week – you will attend training sessions to refine and document your workplace knowledge to gain a recognised vocational qualification.

Supported Internships Finding employment can be challenging, especially if you have additional support needs. Westminster Kingsway College is here to help individuals, who may be in need of tailored support, to move into employment. As part of the programme, you will be placed with an employer for 5-12 hours a week. Your personal Job Coach will make sure you get the correct assistance and support in the workplace and help you to develop the skills needed for the job. In the taught sessions at college, we will work with you to develop your general employability skills, which includes team working, communication and how to manage your disability in the workplace.

STUDY PROGRAMMES All learners aged 16-18 will be on a study programme which will consist of a main technical professional qualification, development of employability skills and relevant work experience. A study programme combines your course with work experience opportunities and the chance to develop skills with tutorials and extra-curricular activities. The aim is to equip you with the versatility and experience needed to adapt to life after college. A study programme can be built around your academic or career prospects to ensure you leave with a well-rounded portfolio. The Study Programme will ensure you receive: • A substantial qualification at Level 1, 2 or 3 e.g. a Diploma, Extended Diploma, City & Guilds qualification, A-Levels or other professional qualification • The opportunity to undertake work experience for all students on academic and vocational courses • Tutorial time, study skills and enrichment activities

Extended Project Qualification

Maths & English

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is popular with top universities in the UK.

It is very important that you have the skills and abilities to be able to clearly express what you learn through good written and verbal maths and English and when using a computer. GCSE Maths and English are now seen as crucial to your success in employment. You will join a programme that matches your individual learning needs, with students typically joining either our GCSE or Functional Skills programmes. You may also be offered extra support where needed. For example, additional support is available for students with dyslexia.

The qualification offers you the chance to carry out in-depth research into your own area of interest. Examples of past EPQ titles include ‘Rupert Murdoch’s power in the UK’, ‘The evolution of fashion from the 20th century to the 21st century’ and ‘Staging a play about child protection’. Final submission is by a 5000 word dissertation, a performance or production of a design or artefact. Students who join the EPQ have developed their skills in independent study in preparation for the demands of higher education. The EPQ is the equivalent of one AS Level and can be completed in the second year of studies alongside A-Levels.

If you don’t already have a GCSE grade 4 or above you will continue to study Maths and/or English as part of your course. If you have a grade 3 you will need to resit these exams until you achieve at least a grade 4.

07

CAREERS & EMPLOYABILITY At Westminster Kingsway College, we know that when it comes to preparing for your future career, you need top quality information, advice and guidance. Activities are informed by up to date labour market information and the college’s Careers and Employability Strategy is aligned with the Gatsby Benchmarks of best practice in Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG), as championed in the recent government Careers Strategy for FE colleges (Feb 2018).
