Another Successful Wheat Kings Sportsmans Dinner Branden Crowe WESTMAN JOURNAL newsroom@wheatcityjournal.ca

The UCT Pavilion was jam-packed on Thursday, February 8 for the 2018 QCountry Brandon Wheat Kings Sportsmans Dinner. The annual event, held as a fundraiser for the Wheat Kings education fund was sold out once again and fans and members of the business community were treated to a great meal and a night of hockey talk and laughter. Over 600 people converged on the Keystone Centre for the event which was headlined by the Voice of the Winnipeg Jets Dennis Beyak, as well as Sportsnet’s John Shannon and comedian Graham Chittenden. In addition to the dinner, the evening featured both live and silent auctions and among the high bids during the night included signed jerseys from former Wheat Kings Ivan Provorov, Nolan Patrick, Mark Stone, Brayden Schenn as well as a game-worn jersey from Vegas Golden Knights’ goalkeeper Marc-Andre Fleury. “To see the corporate response and the fan support for the event was truly special,” said Wheat Kings Director of Game Day Operations Chris Falko. “These folks helped raise a lot of money for these young kids and despite the amount of work that goes into it, it’s a very satisfying feeling when it’s all said and done.” Since 1968, the Sportsmans Dinner has been an annual event in the Wheat City and year after year the venue is packed with passionate Wheat King fans looking to rub elbows with their favorite players. “There aren’t many events that bring people in our community together like this dinner does,” added Falko. “It’s a unique event and being in such a hockey market and seeing so much pride and passion these folks have for our team turns it into more than just a fundraiser.” In 1993 the WHL began their scholarship program in which a player receives a year of tuition and books for each year they play in the league. In that span, over 5,000 scholarships have been handed out with over 300 players attending post-secondary schools each year. With the onus on preparing these young men for a future outside of hockey, the focus quickly turns the next event. SOBEY’S WEST R0011515731
