Christmas Gift Wrapping Makes a Difference

by Brandi Pollock The Brandon Shoppers Mall and The Canadian National Institute For The Blind (CNIB) are proud to bring back Christmas gift-wrapping for another holiday season.

The two organizations work together to make this event successful; the Shoppers Mall provides the site, signage, marketing, and promotions along with some wrapping materials, while the CNIB is responsible for the rest of the wrapping material and all volunteers. “[This event is] now into its 30th year. The CNIB Christmas Gift Wrapping program is staffed by over 100 volunteers plus over 20 Corporate, small business and special interest groups.” CNIB Christmas Gift Wrap Coordinator Lin McMillan continued, “This

year, the CNIB is wrapping from December 1 through to Christmas Eve, December 24 at 5:00 p.m.”

The Christmas Wrap Centre is open during mall hours, which are 9:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m, Monday to Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday and 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve. “In total, there are over 420 man hours per week to fill with an average of 20 volunteers per day handling 3-hour shifts, it’s a daunting task to say the least,” said McMillan.

The Christmas Wrap Centre raises money strictly off of donations from holiday shoppers who take advantage of the service.

“All funds raised at the Christmas Gift Wrap Centre are through generous donations by customers and last year the CNIB raised over $ 14,000.00.” McMillan con-

tinued, “Funds are used for CNIB programs, materials, teaching and training.”

Not only is this a great place to get your last minute gifts wrapped during this busy holiday season, but it could also be a great opportunity for you to spread some Christmas cheer by lending a helping hand.

A simple phone call could be the difference between life and death on the streets and highways in and around Brandon this holiday season.

Beginning in late November, volunteers with Operation Red Nose began driving area residents home after their Christmas celebrations.

The service, which provides sober drivers to deliver you and your vehicle home safely, will run Friday and Saturday evenings from 9 p.m. until 2 p.m. until New Year’s Eve. Volunteers with Operation Red Nose can be reached at (204) 728-

For the past nine years, Operation Red Nose has been spearheaded by organizers with the Westman and Area Christmas Dinner. The service is free, but donations are accepted.

The money raised will benefit youth sports and organizations in the Brandon and Westman region. More than $4000 was raised through the 2016 Operation Red Nose campaign.

The service has been provided in communities throughout Manitoba for 23 years. Last year, local volunteers provided more than 350 rides to people who had consumed alcohol while celebrating the holiday season.

“This is a free, safe ride home with

their own vehicle after they’ve enjoyed the festive season,” said Operation Red Nose organizer Gladden Smith. “All they have to do is give us a call and we’ll get them home.”

Volunteers working in the program must be 18 years old and must fill an application that includes a criminal record check. Gladden said volunteer support has been good since opening the service on Nov. 24 and 25. However, there appears to be a shortage of help for Dec. 31.

“Our big night is New Year’s Eve and we’re still very short of volunteers for that night. We could use quite a few more people that evening,” he said.

“Preferably, we’d like to have 12 to 15 teams of three drivers. Volunteers are driven to the client’s location then we take the client home in their own vehicle. We’ll travel up to 30 kilometers outside of Brandon.”

Local sponsors have lent a hand with Operation Red Nose as well.

Volunteers are provided food and beverages from Domino’s Pizza, Pizza Hut, Marino’s Pizza, Old Dutch, Coke and Tim Horton’s.

The Westman and Area Christmas

Dinner provides a full-course Christmas meal to more than 3,500 area residents on Christmas Day. The event caters to the people living in poverty, are homeless, shut-ins and their children. Youth participating in the dinner will see Santa Claus and receive a gift.

The Westman and Area Christmas Dinner has been held for three decades. Today, it is held in the Grand Swan Room of the Victoria Inn on Victoria Avenue in Brandon from noon until 6 p.m. on Dec. 25.

More than 400 volunteers are involved in the event, from preparing food in the days leading up to the meal to serving the food itself.

Fans Flock To See Wheaties Win on Star Wars Night

by Brandi Pollock The Wheat Kings stretched their win streak to eight games after defeating the Kelowna Rockets 7-4 in Saturday night’s “Star Wars Game”.

“The energy in the building was different from a normal game.” The Voice of the Brandon Wheat Kings Branden Crowe said, “I think you had some crossover fans who love Star Wars but weren’t normally hockey fans. It was fun to look at the crowd and see all the costumes and the young kids getting into the theme night. It was different that’s for sure, but I think it was a lot of fun for the fans.”

It was a thrilling night as there were over 4,000 fans in the building and even some that were dressed in star wars costumes in support of the evening. The Brandon Wheat Kings raised $13,700 in the jersey auction on Saturday night, which was donated to the MS Society of Canada.

“Each time the Wheat Kings do a specialty jersey night, a different cause is chosen.” Crowe continued, “In the past, they have raised funds for CFB Shilo, The Canadian Cancer Society, the Diabetes Association of Canada and the Ashley Neufeld Complex. This was just another initiative that wanted to take part in an auction and were successful in raising a solid number!

The night turned out to be great on all accounts, the Wheat Kings came out with another win on the ice and certainly a win off the ice with a great fundraising event!

“I wasn’t sure what to expect,” Crowe added. “At the end of the day, the main goal is to raise funds for the cause at hand and on this night I think that was accomplished. A lot of fans went home with a new jersey, and plenty of money went to a great cause. I think the city embraced the night, had fun with it and really made it something the team can build on moving forward.”

The snow is falling and the degrees are dropping as winter is in full effect, so the Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association is conducting the Fur Everyone pet food drive across the province. Clinics everywhere are collecting donations of unopened bags and tins of pet food to distribute to shelters, rescues, local food banks and families in need.

The program is designed to help bring awareness of the issue and increase the number of donations given to clinics, and the participating locations are finding the expanded push of the campaign is brining positive results. “It’s something great to have going on in the clinic, as this time of year definitely gets harder for some people and sometimes pets go on the back burner when it comes to food, so it’s definitely nice to have some food that they can go to when they already have to be spending on toys and things for the season’’ said Megan Cummings of the Grand Valley Animal Clinic.

Our furry family members can be just as important to the household as any person, brining relaxation and happiness at a cost of their care and upkeep, but they aren’t able to clearly tell us when they are

in need. “I think there’s lots of toy drives for kids, as there should be, but the animals can’t speak up so we have to speak up for them. So this is our way of saying let’s help everybody, and people need their pets, they so often become more than just companions. Look at how many people that have animals that support

them, both with their physical and mental wellbeing,” commented Dr. Sherry Wurtz of the Wheat City Veterinary Clinic in an interview.

The participating clinics are all listed on the Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association website, and they are all accepting donations all this month until

December 21. The clinics accepting donations in the Brandon area are the Wheat City Veterinary Clinic, the Grand Valley Animal Clinic, the Brandon Hills Veterinary Clinic and the Brandon Animal Clinic, and donations made at any location will be distributed to where they can help the most.

Students of Brandon University have expressed concern in recent weeks after posters and stickers appeared around the campus grounds sporting slogans and promoting a website based around concepts of white supremacy. The website in question is European Brotherhood, and according to the site was created by “a group of European Nationalists who care about the future of their land”, and sells products such as clothing with the slogan “supremacy” in large white font, music by bands who are self identified as “neoNazi” or white supremacist, as well as the same stickers being found on campus Naomi Ledbetter, a student of Brandon

University, says she feels on edge that this type of display is happening. “The campus is probably one of the most diverse locations around, and the fact that the posters are put up somewhere that is supposed to be safe for everyone to learn, an academic institution, makes it appear at the very least as if people of other ethnicities are being targeted’’, said Naomi in an interview with the Journal.

The University administration has had procedures and protocols in place to assist students and campus members in situations where they feel they are being attacked or discriminated against, which includes provisions for unauthorized placement of posters or other materials on University property. The Diversity and Human Rights Advisor, Lisa Park, is also working hard to ensure that the

policies are being kept up to date and adequate training on these policies is given.

“We have trained over one hundred people since September in a workshop on the discrimination and harassment policy and procedures, and it’s an ongoing project at the University to make sure that people are aware how to address these concerns when they come up, and we’ve been doing town halls on these policies similar to what we had done regarding the sexual violence policy”.

December 10 was the seventieth anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, and was commemorated by Brandon University with Human Rights day.

A display of books and materials on the topic of human rights was set up in the

campus library and is still on display, and was deemed a success by those involved.

“We were really happy with the response and it’s the latest in a series of events on campus to try and make it a more open and welcoming space. We invited people to talk about what human rights means to them and we had over seventy responses from all three campuses, Dauphin, Winnipeg and Brandon, and we are really trying to work on the positive side and keep the campus really open”.

Applying a Rural and Remote Lens to the KPMG Review There has been much discussion and analysis of the KPMG Manitoba Fiscal Performance Review recently released by the provincial government. However, the potential impacts that will occur in rural and remote Manitoba communities, if some of the review’s recommendations are implemented, have not yet been part of the dialogue. The review itself fails to recognize the realities of delivering public services across our province’s vast geography and into places with low population densities.

As the review characterizes it, there are “areas of opportunity to bend the cost curve” across government, some of them directly related to delivering services to rural and remote Manitobans. In this piece, I will highlight some policy recommendations that require much more analysis, with a specific focus on how rural and remote Manitoba could be impacted. One of the review’s overarching themes relates to taking advantage of opportunities to change service delivery and reduce the costs per client served by, for example, using the internet and social media as alternatives to publishing advertisements in newspapers, and co-locating departments in rural/ remote communities in order to “rationalize real estate”. Emphasis on this theme neglects to point out that not all public services can be delivered online; internet and cellular coverage in rural/remote areas is patchy and unreliable . There can also be more costs associated with providing front-line services to Manitobans living far away from urban centres in communities with small populations, such as transportation and fewer people per front-line worker. It is unclear from the review or the province how these

important factors will be taken into consideration as changes to service delivery are implemented for the sake of “bending the cost curve.” Funding to educate rural and remote students from kindergarten to post-secondary is very much at risk if recommendations are implemented to the existing funding model. In the K-12 system, eliminating the Formula Guarantee, freezing transportation funding, and eliminating the class size initiative are measures that will cut education funding for rural and remote communities. The annual FRAME Report provides a detailed accounting of how education funding was spent across divisions . According to the 2016/17 Report, 19 of the22 school divisions that received the Formula Guarantee were located in rural or remote Manitoba. In addition, rural and remote divisions by far spend more per pupil on transportation costs than their urban counterparts. Fuel price increases significantly impact their budgets. For example, the 2016 cost per pupil for transportation in the Frontier School Division was $1,867, while it was $220 in the Winnipeg School Division.

Finally, rolling back the K-3 class size initiative will result in the loss of teaching positions, which are good jobs in rural and remote communities. A 2011 Senate Report on post-secondary education in Canada identifies students from rural and remote areas as a specific under-represented group.

These students also incur higher housing and transportation costs, possibly leading to higher student debt upon graduation.

The KPMG Review highlights two areas in the post-secondary education system as opportunities for spending reductions that will make repaying education-related debt

for rural and remote students more difficult: the elimination of the Tuition Tax Credit, which has already taken place, and the possible reintroduction of interest in Province of Manitoba student loans.

Both of these measures were aimed at decreasing students’ financial burden, putting graduates on a better financial footing so they could make investments such as purchasing a home or buying RRSPs earlier in their career. KPMG’s recommendations for the Department of Families suggest opportunities for cost savings in two main program areas: Adult Disability Services and Employment, Income & Rent Assist. There is a potential for vulnerable people living in rural and remote Manitoba to suffer greatly if reductions are made to these programs without a geographical lens. There are nearly 20 municipalities in rural Manitoba where the population is growing and there is a higher than average level of poverty , which means that there are barriers to these individuals leaving their communities to access education or find jobs. Some of these individuals, as well as those living in other rural and

remote communities, receive support from one or both of these program areas and will be acutely impacted if cost per client is the only criteria used as government considers cost reductions. Rural Municipalities could experience a direct financial impact with respect to infrastructure and policing costs. The review suggests investigating whether municipalities are in a better position to manage low volume highways and agriculture drains, as well as a review of policing agreements to find efficiencies. The review suggests looking at the long-term viability of organizations that receive funding through Sport, Culture, and Heritage, as well as the province’s role in supporting them.

How will viability be defined? Will this analysis take into account that viability in a community of 1,000 is more challenging than a community of over 700,000? Will these organizations turn to their local municipal governments for support if provincial funding is reduced? These questions and more should be incorporated into the province’s decision-making process. The fact that the geography of our prov-

ince is vast and diverse must be considered by the province as they decide whether or not to act on recommendations in the KPMG review. Efforts to reduce government’s cost per client must take into account added costs of delivering services outside of cities and limits to current broadband and cellular infrastructure. Reduced funding for education, less support from the Department of Families for those struggling with a disability or living on a low income, and downloading infrastructure to Municipalities are recommendations that, if implemented as recommended, are poised to have a direct, negative impact on rural and remote Manitobans. Over half of the PC Caucus, nine of whom are members of Premier Pallister’s Cabinet, represent rural or remote constituencies.

These MLAs have an important job making sure that their constituents do not suffer in their government’s efforts to “bend the cost curve”.

Green Screen Adventures

Danielle Hubbard LIBRARY TALKS I sit in front of a green screen and talk about death and destruction.

I speak into a tiny microphone concealed in my collar, and stare into the anonymous eyes of three cameras.

A man’s voice booms in from somewhere unseen. The floor and the walls behind me are a shocking, synthetic green – a

shade that carries no shadows and provides the illusion that I’m hovering. Later, when the segment is aired, an entirely different background will be shown behind me.

Is Danielle starring in the next dystopian Hollywood thriller?

No, alas. Even better, I’m recording book talks at the Westman Communications Group studio. The studio’s a comfortable place, staffed by a friendly, oft-times hilarious contingent of guys.

I visit them once a month to film Between the Pages, a program I host. Last month I interviewed Souris author Rebekah Lee Jenkins (The Night They Came for Til).

The month before that, I spoke with Cheryl Swark, Administrative Director of the Brandon Branch of the

Learning Disabilities Association of Manitoba (a very long title for a very magnanimous organization). Between the Pages is a fun way to showcase literacy and culture in the Brandon area.

Today, however, we’re filming book talks. Rather than lining up an interviewee, I arrived at the station accompanied by a bag of books. I talk about the books in groups of three at a time, in little four- to ten-minute segments.

WCG’s Production Coordinator (the ever-accommodating Dan) slots my segments in between other programs.

Basketball game wrap up early? No problem. Enjoy a book talk, courtesy of your neighbourhood librarian!

One of my favourite things about book talks – predictably – is picking the books.

I only talk about books I’ve personally read; I don’t want any bland or insincere endorsements.

Once I start talking, I realize what intense topics I’ve picked. First come three books about human rights violations, including Daoud Hari’s The Translator. Hari, a Sudanese tribesman, lived through the Darfur genocide, and witnessed the massacre of most of his family.

Then comes a trio of survival stories. My current favourite is Alfred Lansing’s Endurance, about Earnest Shackleton. In 1915, Shackleton set out to be the first man to cross the Antarctic continent. The mission was ill fated, however, and he and his 28 men spent over a year trapped in pack ice on the Weddell Sea. Their travails

included frostbite, rowing the Drake Passage (one of the most tumultuous bodies of water in the world), and a diet of gamey penguin meat.

(I love this book so much I’m going to have to write about it more in a later column).

After those jolly topics, I switched to a lighter tact. I told the studio cameras about the Library Book Club’s top three reads of 2017, and the top three reads of the Library Youth Book Club (ages eight to twelve). For the adult book club, top picks include The Circle, by Dave Eggers, and Fifteen Dogs, by André Alexis. For the youth, I’d have to go with The Tale of Despereaux, by Kate DiCamillo, a charmingly poetic adventure story about a mouse that falls in love with a princess.

noon, Dan and I have captured a good few book talks.

We high-five, and chat as I disentangle myself from my mic. If all goes well, the talks will pique people’s interest. I imagine swarms of eager Access Channel viewers pounding down the library doors in search of Shackleton and Despereaux. Both heroes deserve the attention.

I doubt the results will be quite so dramatic though. I hope people enjoy the segments, and give books – and the adventures they hold – a nod of appreciation before diving into the next basketball game.

A new American survey shows that 1 in 3 of our neighbours (that’s a third) wish they could skip gift giving ( bah humbug) so they could save money.

The survey doesn’t indicate if those same folks would refuse gifts at Christmas.

Another falala fact That same survey shows that 1 in 4 Americans ( a quarter as we say in Canada) want stuff for their home instead of gifts..that stuff includes things they don’t want to buy like toilet paper, tissues and hygiene products.

On that note, should we send the President of the United States, Donald Trump, a package of Canada’s finest toilet paper. Af-

ter all there are some who think that would be fitting considering some of the stuff that comes out of his mouth and tweets!

Taken from the headlines...this is real stuff not like that emitting from the White House.

Fishing could become a lot easier in parts of Ontario.

Residue from antidepressant drugs are flowing into a wetland located at the western end of Lake Ontario and it’s making the fish more vulnerable to predators.

The exposed fish avoid cautionary instincts such as keeping still after being startled. The drugged fish would stop, like normal, at signs of danger. But they would resume swimming much more quickly.

So a precautionary note to my fishing buddies.. don’t bring pills with you next time you’re on the lake to dump in your favourite casting spot.

With fishing next summer how many fishers will be using their catch to satisfy the munchies after smoking some weed ( and

we ain’t talking seaweed here).

Now there’s a show idea for the CBC, stoned fishermen trying to catch stoned fish.

A point to ponder...if someone says they don’t want any gifts this Christmas and you honour their wishes, how do you react when that same person displays disappointment on Christmas day that you didn’t get them a gift?

Remember when socks and underwear were cheap gifts to give someone?

“This campaign is a school-wide initiative,” said “Stuff the Bus” coordinator and Vincent Massey staff member Crystal Coleman. “We have over 950 students and staff in our building. The students from our Youth in Philanthropy and Youth Revolution programs will be helping to load the bus and deliver the items to Samaritan House.”

The Samaritan House Ministries Resource Centre and Food Bank is located at 820 Pacific Ave. in Brandon. The organization also has other facilities that provide various services to the homeless, people struggling financially and victims of domestic abuse.

Samaritan House Ministries includes a Training Centre, which provides adult basic education and literacy programming, GED preparation services, and computer classes. It also operates shelter and housing for the homeless, an employment resource centre and a community gardens program.

There are only three days left for students and staff at Vincent Massey High School to “Stuff the Bus.” For the third consecutive year, the school is attempting to completely fill a school bus with non-perishable food and various household products. The items are being donated to Brandon’s Samaritan House Ministries Food Bank.

The effort began on Dec. 1 and will end on Monday, with the bus arriving at Samaritan House on Tuesday.

This made up 19,000 hampers for needy families in the city. About 22,000 hampers have already been distributed based on the donations collected this year.

“We wanted to have a campaign in our school that recognizes the importance of giving back to our community and helping those in need,” Coleman said.

“Students are able to see the impact that our school can have when we all work together for a cause.”

Coleman suggested the “most-wanted” items include healthy soups and stews, infant formula, whole-grain cereal and pasta, canned fish and meat, beans and canned vegetables.

YWCA Brandon’s “Keeping Spirits Bright” campaign is “illuminating” the public about the organization’s holiday season fundraising campaign.

A Christmas tree in front of their 11th Street location is being lit with purple lights, the color symbolizing the plight of people who have experienced domestic violence. As donations come in, more lights are added to the tree, providing passers-by a daily update on the campaign’s success.

YWCA funds development and marketing officer, BJ Kirouac, said the organization hopes to raise $10,110 this month.

“We try to coordinate the fundraising with some sort of meaning, tying it to what we do and the people we serve. This year, when we put the numbers together, we wanted to increase our goal from last year, which was $7000,” Kirouac said.

“We thought this year, we’d raise $10,000. But why? When you go to the stats, we provided 10,000 bednights at the shelter through the year and the $110 is for the YWCA’s 110 years in Brandon.”

This initiative was first tried in 2016. Kirouac begins the campaign with a strand of lights, which grows as the donations begin to come in. All of the money stays in Brandon and helps support programming in the Westman region. “(The fundraising) is absolutely vital in the sense that, when you look at having to cut kids programs, it’s kind of a shame to cut when these kids are fleeing domestic abuse,” he said. “With the transitional residence, these are people who want to take steps forward in their lives and if they don’t get that service in the community, where else are they going to go?”

The Brandon YWCA operates the Meredith Place transitional Homeless Shelter and the Westman Women’s Shelter, alongside couples counseling services. Meredith Place is a 21-bedroom facility that helps people with mental health issues, parolees, transients, travelers, the unemployed and others. It provides shelter, meals, support, referrals and aid for individuals seeking a more independent lifestyle.

The women’s shelter, meanwhile, furnishes a safe living space for women and children fleeing fam-

ily violence. It is open 24-hours per day and includes counseling, meals, clothing, medication, personal supplies and childcare. The shelter can accommodate up to 24 women and children.

An average of 500 people are provided services through the shelter on an annual basis.

“We do whatever we can for them, but many of these people don’t have anywhere to go or don’t have family to go to or spend time with,” Kirouac said. “The residents are their family right now. The situations where women are fleeing from violence are doing so at a time of year that is supposed to be joyful.”

Kirouac also noted that the “Keeping Spirits Bright” fundraising campaign is also integral to the YWCA’s operations outside of the Christmas season.

“The more funding we can get the better for everyone, not just during the Christmas season, but going into the new year as well,” he said.

Two Brandon Wheat Kings are in St. Catharines, Ont. this week, vying for a spot on Canada’s entry in the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships.

Forward and Wheat King team captain Tanner Kaspick, and defenseman Kale Clague were among 32 players invited to Canada’s 2018 World Junior selection camp, which is taking place Tuesday through Friday. The camp will include three exhibition matches, two versus a university sports all-star squad and one against Denmark’s national team.

Clague is one of seven players returning to Team Canada after participating in the 2017 World Junior tournament. In seven

games, he collected six assists and had a plus-six rating. He also competed internationally in 2015 as captain of Canada’s entry in the Under-17 World Hockey Championships.

“As I go through this process, it’s so important to have those returning players back in the mix,” Hockey Canada head scout Brad McEwen told The Westman Journal last week. “There are lots of ups and downs in the event and the team needs the experience to get through it.”

McEwen said Clague – a four-year Western Hockey League veteran from Lloydminster, Alta.

– has an exceptional ability to move the puck and is capable of playing the fast-paced strategy Team Canada intends to implement during the tournament.

Through 28 games with the Wheat Kings, Clague had 10 goals and 37 assists for 47 points and 35 penalty minutes. The Los Angeles Kings drafted the 19-year-old, 177-pound left-hander in 2016.

Kaspick, meanwhile, has a “hard skill set” that McEwen said would be a great addition to Team Canada’s line-up.

The 19-year-old, 6-footone-inch, 205 pound Brandon native had 11 goals and 23 assists for 34 points through 27 games with the Wheat Kings. He is also in his fourth WHL season and previously played with Team Canada in the 2015 Under-17 World Championships.

Kaspick was also drafted last year, picked up by the St. Louis Blues.

“He plays a real good inside game and goes to the hard areas of the

ice,” McEwen said. “His knowledge of the details of the game is really good as well. You can put him in different situations, like penalty killing or fiveon-five while defending a lead.”

The left-handed forward also brings some grit to his play that opens the ice up for his teammates, McEwen said.

“I thought he has really good skill and he brings a hardness to it. He’s not a real big guy, but he’s a heavier guy who plays a heavier game,” McEwen said. “He’s more of a puck pursuit guy who plays an inside game that opens space for skill and creates lanes.”

A total of 13 players attempting to crack Canada’s World Junior roster are coming from WHL teams. The selection camp includes four goaltenders,

10 defensemen and 18 forwards. That number will be cut to 22 players before the IIHF World Junior Championships begin on Dec. 26 in Buffalo, N.Y. The 2017 tournament last winter in Montreal, Que. saw Team Canada fall to the United States in the gold medal final.

Canada will seek its 16th World Junior Championship victory next month.

Canada will open round-robin play on Boxing Day when they face Finland. They are playing out of Group A, which also includes the United States, Denmark and Slovakia. The tournament will run until Jan. 6.

“We’re lucky to have as many choices as we have in terms of selecting a roster. There are lots of good players and it made for tough decisions when we went through the selection

camp picks,” McEwen continued.

He said the team’s goaltending will be competitive, while the defensive core will move the puck and transition well. Meanwhile, the offensive output is expected to come by committee.

“Among the choices we have, we can spared our offensive tools through the line up,” he said. “We don’t have that generational player this year, but we have some really good players. It will be up to the coaches to set it up and develop what they want from the final roster.”

Neither of Brandon’s two entries were able to leave a mark in the 2017 Victoria Inn High School Hockey Tournament held in Brandon last weekend.

The host Crocus Plains Plainsmen collected one win through the 24-team competition, ultimately losing on the ‘B’-side draw of the Crocus Plains Division (Division III) to the Westwood Warriors.

Meanwhile, the Vincent Massey Vikings – coming off their participation in the JSerra Elite Thanksgiving Hockey Tournament in Anaheim, Cal. – won two

of their five matches. They ultimately defeated the Dauphin Clippers 5-2 in the consolation final of the Royal Oak Division (Division II).

Both teams were winless through the two-game, preliminary round-robin draw. The Vikings lost two games by a score of 4-3 to the Sanford Sabres and the Prairie Mountain Mustangs, while the Plainsmen dropped 7-1 and 5-1 decisions to the Garden City Fighting Gophers and the Transcona Titans.

“We played really tough teams in the round robin, which certainly tested their will and determination,” said Crocus Plains head coach Jeremy Byc-

zkowski. “They worked very hard and performed at a very high level, but just started to run out of steam by the end of the weekend.”

The Plainsmen lost 4-2 to the Major Pratt Titans to open their Crocus Plains bracket play, but rebounded with a 2-1 victory over the Red Lake Rams. They lost in the ‘B’ final to the Westwood Warriors, 4-3.

Byczkowski said the Plainsmen earned valuable experience during the meet while competing against some of the best high school hockey teams in the province. He suggested the players realized the importance of playing hard every shift

and learned that even the minor details of their play can be the difference in the score.

“There were a few players that really worked hard all weekend long and really tried to step up their game while facing some tough competition,” he said. “I honestly couldn’t name any single player without feeling like others would be left out. I do, however, make sure that my players know when I see them pushing their game and really stand out.”

‘AAA’ Wheat Kings gain upper hand in MMAAAHL The Brandon Midget ‘AAA’ Wheat Kings have jumped to a

four-point lead in the Manitoba Midget ‘AAA’ Hockey League standings after extending a winning streak to 17 games last weekend.

The Wheat Kings required extra play to defeat the Eastman Selects 2-1 on Friday in Beausejour.

Lynden McCallum scored the lone goal in the shootout, while goaltender Trent Miner stopped Eastman’s Cole Dekoninck in the third round for the victory.

Eastman opened the scoring at 11:34 of the first period with a goal from Jesse Mistelbacher, but

Wheat Kings make it eight wins in a row The Brandon Wheat Kings have carried momentum from a recent road-swing home with them, boosting their winning streak to eight games after three victories at Westman Place last week.

The Wheat Kings return to Westman Place Friday, when they face the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

They will hit the road west on Saturday to meet the current leaders of the Western Hockey League, the Moose Jaw Warriors.

As of Monday, the Wheat Kings were third in both the Eastern Conference and the overall WHL standings with 22 wins, seven losses and a shootout loss for 45 points.

Samuel Dawson ROSS ( 29 years of age )

- Unlawfully dwelling in a house - Assault - Fail to appear in court - Breach of Recognizance (x2) It is alleged that on October 4th 2017, that the suspect Samuel Dawson ROSS entered without consent or lawful excuse into the residence of a female with whom he was previously involved in a domestic relationship. ROSS then forcefully pushed the female, ripped her clothing and fled the residence prior to Police arrival. A criminal record check of the suspect found that he was bound by a Recognizance with a condition to have no contact or communication with the female. A further condition of the same Recognizance states that the suspect is to abide by a curfew. On October 5th, Police attended to the residence of the suspect during a time when the suspect was to abide by the curfew conditions.

The suspect was not present and his whereabouts are unknown.

Attempts have been made by Police to locate the suspect which have met with negative results. A Warrant of Arrest for Unlawfully in a Dwelling House, Assault and Breach of Recognizance X2 has been issued for Samuel Dawson ROSS.

On December 6th 2017, an employee of a business in the 300 Block of Park Avenue East reported that sometime overnight the business was broken into. Investigation revealed that a door to the business was smashed and entry was gained. Cash was stolen from within the business and a vehicle stolen from the parking lot. The vehicle has since been recovered and Police continue to investigate this occurrence.
