Host committee preparing for Safeway Championship Lanny Stewart Editor lstewart@westmanjournal.com
The Safeway Championship is less than a month away from taking place in Brandon and the host committee is hard at work preparing for the event. Jeff Cristall, a co-chair of the host committee, says things are coming along smoothly for the provincial men’s curling championship, slated for Feb. 4-8 at the Keystone Centre. “We’ve got some good experienced people doing all the things necessary to get ready,” Cristall said. “We’ve been focusing on getting sponsorships all done and that kind of stuff. “We’re also focused on getting bums in seats,” he added. He says private boxes have been sold for the event and that general admission ticket sales have been “picking up” as of late – however there are still plenty of tickets still available to purchase. Cristall says the committee is also well on their way to getting roughly 200 volunteers who will be needed for the five-day event, which will consist of 32 curling teams vying for the provincial crown. He says the Safeway event is just the beginning however when it comes to bringing more curling events to Brandon in the near future. “This is one piece of a strategy to get us back in the game of curling hosting,” he noted. “We did the Memorial Cup and since then, there haven’t been very many things done [hosted in Brandon],” he continued. “We’re trying to go back after some of those things that are ideally suited for a barn our size (referring to Keystone Centre, Westman Com-
