The Big Writing Challenge 2023

The Big Writing Challenge run by London Metropolitan University is here with us again!

The BWC is a creative writing competition empowering young people to transform their imagination into words. The competition introduces students to professionals from the publishing industry including writers, agents and publishers.

Who can take part?

WLC students who enjoy writing, and want to develop a greater awareness of publishing and the different opportunities within the industry can take part in the competition. You need to be creative and willing to develop your writing and talk about your ideas in a group.

Last year, WLC - Ealing Green student, Elyana Guler, won the 2022 Big Writing Challenge competition

If you are interested in the Big Writing Challenge competition please speak with your teacher to contact careers or email careers-team@wlc.ac.uk.

Pastoral & Wellbeing

Tips to staying positive over the holidays:

1. Acknowledge your feelings: Realise it’s normal to feel sadness and grief. It’s ok to take time to cry or express your feelings.

2. Reach out: If you feel lonely or isolated, seek help from family, friends or support groups

3. Be realistic: The holidays don’t have to be perfect. We make and shape holidays around us. Don’t fall into comparisons or unrealistic expectations.

4. Learn to say no: Saying yes when you should say no can leave you feeling resentful and overwhelmed. People will understand, so set those boundaries!

5. Take a breather: Make some time for yourself! Take a break for yourself. Spending even 15 mins to yourself, without any distractions, may refresh you enough to handle everything you need to do.

Bursary West London College

BURSARY UPDATE

Most of you should have now received your November bursary payment.

If you have not applied yet, it is not too late, please click here to be taken to the online bursary application form on Pay My Student.

For further information regarding the college bursary, payments and support information please click here or check out the Student Services financial support page on your learner portal for further information.

All future bursary payments for the Spring and Summer term will be linked to your commitment to your course so payments can be withdrawn or withheld if you are not attending regularly.

We do understand that the higher cost of living is affecting us all so please contact us if any further support is needed and we will do our best to advise and support you in any way possible.

We still advise those learners who live within a London borough and are aged 16,17 or 18 on the 31st August 2021 to apply for the 16+ Zip card from Transport for London which offers free bus travel and 50% off on trains. Click here

Learners who are aged 19 years over, on a full time course can apply for the Student 18+ Oyster Card which will give them a 30% discount of the cost of a weekly or monthly travelcard. Click here

There is a £20 admin fee payable to TFL to purchase both of these cards.

Travelling around London and getting to and from College can be expensive and the bursary is only there as a contribution towards these costs. Therefore, we strongly encourage all students to purchase a discount card to give you as much discount with your travel costs as possible, even if that means getting up earlier and using the buses instead of trains!

Here is the link for more info.

https://tfl.gov.uk/fares/free-and-discounted-travel

The next deadline date to get applications approved in order to receive January 2023 bursary is Wednesday 18th January 2022
