The Midlife Energy Trap

Many people arrive in midlife eating better than ever — more vegetables, fewer treats, good intentions all round — and yet feel more tired, not less. Energy dips mid-afternoon, sleep feels lighter and mornings begin with a negotiation rather than a spring. It is quietly baffling, particularly when you’re doing all the things that are supposed to help. The temptation, of course, is to double down: eat less, try harder, push through. Yet for many, this is exactly where energy slips even further away — not because the body is failing, but because it’s asking for something different.

What’s happening here isn’t a lack of discipline or motivation. It is a quiet mismatch between a body that has changed and habits that haven’t. While we loosely associate midlife with our 40s and 50s, it doesn’t tend to announce itself on a birthday; it makes itself known more quietly through changes in energy, sleep, and recovery. Subtle but significant shifts — in hormones, in how we handle stress, in how forgiving the body is of irregular meals or long gaps without food — begin to show up. Strategies that once felt virtuous can start to drain rather than support. This pattern appears most often in women navigating midlife, but it’s increasingly common across the board: people eating “well”, following the rules and running on empty all the same.

For many people, a gradual drop in energy isn’t about eating badly, but about eating cautiously. Over time, meals can become lighter, portions a little smaller, and gaps between meals easier to tolerate — or at least easier to justify. Breakfast may be rushed or skipped, lunch fitted in where possible, with dinner expected to restore what the day has taken. Coffee often helps bridge the gaps. None of this is inherently problematic, and for years it may barely register. But by midlife, the body tends to be less forgiving. What once passed unnoticed can begin to register as irregular fuel, rising stress, and a slow erosion of energy reserves. This is where it helps to stop thinking of energy as a personality trait — something you either have or don’t — and start thinking of it as a biological process. Energy isn’t generated by willpower or good intentions, but by the body’s ability to turn food into usable fuel. When that process is disrupted — by irregular meals, chronic stress or simply not eating enough to meet the body’s needs — energy doesn’t fail, it fades. The result isn’t a dramatic collapse, but a kind of persistent flatness that no amount of motivation can fix.

At the cellular level, this story plays out inside the mitochondria — tiny structures within our cells responsible for turning food into energy. They are often described as the body’s power plants, but they are surprisingly sensitive ones. Mitochondria need steady fuel, time to repair, and a relatively calm internal environment to function well. When meals are erratic, intake is too low, or the body is kept in a constant state of stress, energy production becomes less efficient. Energy doesn’t disappear all at once. Instead, it becomes less reliable — fading at the edges — and in midlife that change is often noticed sooner, with less room to recover. Midlife doesn’t create these vulnerabilities so much as reveal them.

Hormonal shifts, accumulated stress and years of adapting to busy lives mean the body has less spare capacity than it once did. Recovery tends to take longer, sleep becomes more sensitive and blood sugar swings are felt more keenly. Don’t depair - none of this signals decline; it signals specificity. The midlife body is clearer about what it needs and less tolerant of being under-fuelled or over-stimulated. What we once got away with now asks to be addressed.

What tends to support energy at this stage of life isn’t greater control, but greater attunement. The body responds best to rhythm — to regular meals, to daylight and darkness, to periods of activity followed by genuine rest. This mirrors the wider patterns around us: seasons that shift, days that rise and fall, environments that cue when to be alert and when to restore. When we eat in a way that respects these rhythms — earlier rather than later, enough rather than just “good”, consistently rather than perfectly — energy production becomes steadier. At a cellular level, mitochondria thrive under these conditions. They work more efficiently when fuel arrives predictably and stress signals ease, allowing energy to be generated rather than rationed.

Restoring energy in midlife doesn’t require a radical reset, but it does ask for nourishment that is both adequate and well-timed. Meals that combine protein, fibre and healthy fats help stabilise blood sugar and reduce the constant demand on stress hormones. For many, this means eating more earlier in the day and relying less on dinner to make up the difference. Nutrients that quietly support energy production — including iron, B vitamins, magnesium, iodine and omega-3 fats — are often depleted through years of stress or restriction. These aren’t quick fixes, but steady contributors, best supplied through real food eaten regularly and with little fuss.

Energy is also restored when we remember that our bodies evolved in rhythm with the world around us. Long before artificial light, constant stimulation and questionable food available at all hours - energy rose with daylight, settled with darkness and was shaped by seasons of abundance and rest. We still carry that wiring. Regular meals, morning light, quieter evenings, and genuine downtime aren’t modern wellness trends — they’re the conditions under which human energy systems developed. When we live in ways that honour those rhythms, mitochondria do what they’ve always done: respond to predictability, adequate fuel and periods of recovery. What feels like a modern energy problem often turns out to be a body that hasn’t changed as fast as the world around it.

Attempted murder of Brosna farmer

-Sheffield Daily Telegraph 13 March1888

A telegram from Listowel states that a report has reached the local police barracks that a party of ‘Moonlighters’ broke into the home of a farmer named O’Connell near Brosna. The farmer was shot by the intruders, but he still lives, albeit in a precarious condition. His wife and daughter were also injured in the attack on their home.

(No information as to why he was shot but most likely because he had paid the rent to his landlord. This was a period when the Whiteboys were demanding that farmers should not pay rent.)

Dingle College of Irish

We wish to offer our congratulations to the promoters of the Dingle College of Irish on its success and on their choice of Principal teacher, Mr. Kane. He is known, not only to Munster men, as one of our best Gaelic writers, but is known throughout Ireland as one of our most successful Irish Teachers.

We wish to bring to the notice of the National Teachers of Kerry the opportunity they will have for a further two weeks in Dingle. We hope they will add to the now large numbers of students, from all parts of Ireland, attending this college

Violent storm in East Kerry

-Kerry Evening Star 18 February 1904

On Friday night and Saturday morning a storm, which for intensity and violence has not been experienced for many years past, prevailed over Castleisland, Brosna and other East Kerry districts.

The ferocious storm was accompanied by thunder and lightning of unprecedented severity. Houses within the storm area were severely damaged with portions of them being blown away. Trees were uprooted and lowlands submerged in water to a considerable extent. There were also reports of hailstones accompanying the storm.

Eleven men drown in Smerwick Harbour

-York Herald 04 November 1820

We regret to report that the Sally of Workington (Cumbria) was totally wrecked yesterday in Smerwick Harbour. However, the greater part of the disaster resulted in the lives of eleven of the twelve men on board ending in a watery grave. The Sally was bound from Trinidad to Hull with a valuable cargo of sugar but was forced, through stress of weather, to seek shelter in Smerwick Harbour.

The captain believed he had secure anchorage and decided to travel to Cork to purchase some materials. However, while he was absent the cables broke, because of powerful gales, and drove the vessel ashore. A gathering of local people watched helplessly as the tragedy unfolded, their own boats unable to face the mountainous waves. There was one survivor who is named as George Foster.

Among the people who were drowned were two Dingle Revenue Officers, John Neligan and J. Kennedy. None of the cargo was saved. (How did George Foster escape? There was no coastguard station in the area in 1820.)

Ban on quarry-powder

-Kerry Evening Post 18 July 1832

Hundreds of labourers and quarrymen are now out of employment in this County, for want of quarry-powder (aka black powder or gunpowder). Without the powder it is impossible to carry on quarrying work and a variety of other work in the Agricultural industry.

The Government is certainly perfectly correct in using every precaution against popular violence when that kind of excitement is practiced to

rouse the evil passions of the multitude in the South of Ireland. However, Kerry is still in perfect tranquillity.

We therefore respectfully submit, that a restriction on the sale of gunpowder in this County is unnecessary providing that none, but the proper people are licensed.

(There were fears, in 1832, that the country would be engulfed in an uprising relating to the Tithe War which compelled the Catholic tenant farmers to provide one tenth of their produce to the Anglican Church of Ireland.)

Give us a job

-Central Statistics Office (CSO) 19 November 1833

Letter from Patrick Brosnan of Ardrinane, Annascaul, County Kerry, to Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, asking to be permitted into the service of the Constabulary, despite being half an inch short, or else to be given an appointment in the Revenue Police.

(The required height for entry into the Police Force in the 1830s was five feet seven inches or 1.7m).

Transported for life

-Kerry Evening Post 18 March 1835

At the Kerry Assizes in Tralee John Reily was tried for stealing a horse, the property of Martin Clifford. The horse was found 24 miles from the location where the felony was committed. The thief was apprehended and the horse recovered by the laudable exertions of Darby McGillicuddy and Denis Connor. Reily was found guilty and sentenced to be transported for life.

Michael Connor, who was charged with the murder of Patrick Lynch near Castlegregory, in the month of October last, was acquitted. (Was he in jail for the previous six months?) Mago Sheehy, stood indicted for stealing a cow, the property of Michael Dowd. He was found guilty and sentenced to be transported for life.

Andrew Coffey was indicted for stabbing a young man named James Ross, in this town. Coffey had left the County and had enlisted in the Artillery of the East India Company’s Service. However, he was arrested at Chatham, Kent, and brought to trial. His sentence has not yet been announced but it is believed he will be sent to his regiment in India.

We understand that the trial of the persons charged with the riots and the massacre at the Ballyeagh Races, near Ballybunion, in June last will commence tomorrow. The trials are generating great interest by the public.

(Between 2,000 and 3,000 people took part in a faction fight on Ballyeigh Strand in June 1834 and more than 200 people were killed, depending on source.

The sentence of ‘transportation for life’ usually meant being sent to Australia or Van Dieman’s Land, which became Tasmania in 1856. Before that, thousands were sent to North America, but that route stopped when the American Revolution began.)

Potato, Leek and Bacon Gratin

A good gratin always has a place on the table and especially this time of the year as when comforting food is exactly what we crave. This recipe is a variation of the popular potato and garlic gratin. In this, I have added leek and bacon to give it a little more body. This will work as a main meal or can be served as a side. Hope you love it.

Ingredients

2 leek, washed and halved lengthways

15g butter

5/6 rashers, cut into small pieces

3 garlic cloves, sliced finely thyme leaves

150ml milk

150ml cream

800g potatoes, thinly sliced

50g breadcrumbs

salt and pepper

rapeseed oil

Method

Preheat the oven to 180ºC.

Heat a medium sized pot over medium heat and add a little oil. Add the leek and a pinch of salt. Allow to cook gently for about three minutes. Add the butter, bacon, garlic and thyme and continue to cook for a further five minutes. Add the milk and cream to the pot and once it comes to a gentle boil turn it down to a simmer and cook this for about ten minutes. At this stage the liquid will have thickened slightly. Strain the liquid into a bowl.

In a rectangular ovenproof dish measuring about 23cm x 18cm and 6cm high, grease the bottom with some butter. Put some of the leek and bacon into the dish. Spread them to make a thin even layer. Season well with salt and pepper. Add a nice even layer of potatoes and pour some of the strained cream and milk mixture over it. Continue to layer this until all the ingredients are gone. Cover this with foil and place it in the oven. Leave it covered for about one hour. Remove this from the oven and remove the foil. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the top. Put this back in the oven uncovered for about 15 minutes.

A review of the first 10 language plans was published last week, even though the report has been with the Department with a few years now. A review was to be done on our work in Dingle after the third year, in 2025, but we are yet to get any information on that. The review was more of a national overview than a review on the work of the plans that we had expected, which is disappointing. There are a list of suggestions at the end of the report, one of which that there would be at least three employed to work on each plan, this would greatly strengthen the work being carried out and the overall process.

Sing for the Love of it

February is here and love is in the air so why not give a little to yourself and spread some around by joining the Sing For the Love of It sessions at An Díseart on Thursday mornings. We will be singing easy to learn, positive and uplifting songs together. There will be no sheet music, no auditions, no performance, just melody, harmony, improvisation and fun. Abigail is a Natural Voice facilitator who believes that singing is our birth right - its for everyone, so whether you sing in the shower, were branded a ‘crow’ at school or you are a confident choir member, this group is for you. And if English is not your first language don’t worry, the songs are easy to learn.

Four sessions will be taking place during February: on the 5th, 12th, 19th & 26th, start time 10.45am, finishing at 12pm, on the top floor of An Díseart . Cost €20 for 4 or €7 drop in. For more info please contact Abigail 086 1528174 .

Lecture 1

BEC Ecologists will talk about the upland habitats and species they encountered whilst on survey in Páirc Náisiúnta na Mara in the Summer of 2025.

Botanical, Environmental & Conservation (BEC) Consultants Ltd. is a group of experienced ecologists set up in 2000. BEC staff have been at the forefront of the interpretation and identification of internationally important habitats such as Annex 1. habitats.

This is an opportunity to learn more about the uplands surrounding Mt. Brandon and to become familiar with this unique habitat.

Lecture 2

Date: 11.02.2026 @ 8.00pm

Dr Simon Barrow will give a talk on the Basking Shark, for which the waters around the Dingle Peninsula, including Brandon Bay are particularly important.

Dr Simon Barrow is a founder member of the Irish Whale & Dolphin Group. (IWDG) He lectures part time at the Atlantic Technological University (formerly the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology). He has worked on cetaceans, (whales, dolphins & mammals) in Ireland since 1987 and has also worked in the Antartic and Cabo Verde off West Africa.

Basking sharks can be seen along the west coast of Ireland from April to August. Sometimes up to twelve meters long. In the past they were almost hunted to extinction for their liver oil. Known as “Ainmhí Sheoil” in Irish, the basking shark is the largest fish in the North Atlantic and the second largest in the world.

As we slip into spring, the Dingle Peninsula’s Calendar of Events for 2026 takes off. Every Monday will see Tinteán Ceoil in action from 7.30pm to 9.30pm in An Clochán / Cloghane. Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh returns the 18th to 22nd February, and Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé, Ceann Trá is back in action on the 21st and 22nd of February. Again, thank you to all for the incredible work of the Committees and Volunteers who work so hard throughout the year to bring us such wonderful festivals and events celebrating the heritage and culture of Corca Dhuibhne for both our local communities and visitors alike.

SHU Rural Futures / Todhchaí na Tuaithe Conference 8th to 10th June 3-day conference features keynote speaker Nessa Cronin (U Galway) & conversation on rural Irish literature w/Belinda McKeon (Maynooth) & Mike McCormack (U Galway). The conference invites considerations of rural politics, social history, culture, arts, economy, history of rural life, intersections of past & present; critical discoveries in ecology, archeology, language, demographic change, & transformations (continuities) of landscape & place, as well as tourism. We welcome proposals in all areas: creative, practical arts

to explore the multiple futures of rural Ireland. We welcome practitioners working in rural contexts, scholars, artists, & writers. Fáilte roimh pháipéirí as Gaeilge.

Mid-Kerry Biddy’s Day Festival 2026

The Mid-Kerry Biddy’s Day Festival returns this winter with an expanded and richly layered programme of events celebrating one of Ireland’s most distinctive living traditions. Running from Thursday 22 January to Monday 2 February 2026, the festival will take place across Killorglin, Cromane and the wider Mid-Kerry region, bringing together craft, music, language, ritual and community in the lead-up to St Brigid’s Day. At the heart of the festival is the ancient Biddy tradition, rooted in Imbolc and the honouring of St Brigid a time associated with light, renewal, creativity and protection. Over twelve days, the festival offers a wide mix of family-friendly, traditional and contemporary events, culminating in its most anticipated moment of the year: The Biddy’s Parade.

The Biddy’s Parade, taking place on Saturday 31st January, is the centrepiece and defining event of the festival. On parade night, Killorglin town is transformed as Biddy groups from across Mid-Kerry gather in straw hats and traditional costume, carrying Brídeógs through the streets in a powerful procession of fire, music, movement and celebration. The parade is free, open to all to join in or support, and remains one of the most atmospheric and visually striking expressions of living Irish folklore in the country. Fire performers, live music and street celebrations follow, before the night continues into the town’s venues.

A strong emphasis on children and families runs throughout the 2026 programme. The much-loved Kids Lantern Making workshop is back this year facilitated by Jane McMorrow, giving children the opportunity to create lanterns that become part of the parade itself. Young dancers are invited to take to the floor at the Kids Céilí – the Kids Biddy Ball.

Music, dance and social gatherings form another key strand of the festival. The Biddy’s Ball in Francie’s takes place on parade night, offering a latenight celebration filled with traditional music, dancing and community spirit. Singing sessions, céilís and informal gatherings will take place across local pubs and venues throughout the festival, reinforcing the social heart of Biddy’s Day.

Cultural heritage and language remain central to the festival’s identity. A series of Irish language events, including Caint & Comhrá, invite both fluent speakers and learners to take part in relaxed, welcoming settings. Traditional craft workshops, including straw hat making, felting, pottery,

Brigid’s cross making, storytelling and folklore sessions continue the festival’s long-standing commitment to preserving and passing on skills that are intrinsic to the Biddy tradition. The intimate Lighting of the Brigid Flame offers a reflective ceremonial moment, marking renewal, hope and the return of light.

Cromane and Beaufort once again play an important role in the programme, hosting a range of community-led events that reflect the area’s strong connection to landscape, tradition and seasonal ritual. These events form part of the festival’s wider Mid-Kerry reach, ensuring the celebration extends beyond Killorglin town and into Mid-Kerry.

Founded in 2017, the Mid-Kerry Biddy’s Day Festival has been instrumental in reviving a tradition that had been in serious decline. From just two active Biddy groups less than a decade ago, the region now supports a growing network of

groups, with children, families and new communities actively involved. The 2026 festival continues this work, blending heritage with creativity and ensuring the tradition remains relevant, inclusive and alive.

History Makers

Croke Park, 18th January 2026.

When referee Martin McNally blew his whistle for the final time, it marked the end of an extraordinary journey for this group of Dingle footballers and all that have followed them on the adventure.

Along the way, a first County title since the late 1940s was delivered on a thrilling October afternoon in Tralee, a day when the weight of history was lifted by a new set of heroes. Top of the pile in the country's finest footballing county, days just don't get any better than this. Or so we thought.

In reality it was only the first chapter in an epic fairytale. More silverware was raised on a nerve-shredding day in Thurles when they were crowned Munster champions on a day of heroics and drama.

They took us to down to Cork where they produced a performance for the ages, coming from 10 points down in the second half to get the better of a relentless Ballyboden side. Refusing to accept defeat, they reached for the stars as a full moon rose over the scoreboard with the contest ticking towards it's conclusion. Hollywood couldn't have scripted a finish like it. We floated out of Páirc Uí Caoimh barely able to comprehend what we had been witness to. The word on many people's lips was that it was the best sporting day of their lives, a privilege to be there.

Which brought us to the closing chapter. The All Ireland Club Final in Croke Park. The biggest day of them all played out on the grandest stage, where after a campaign with more twists than a corkscrew they saved their best wine til last. Displaying utter belief in their destiny they gave a complete performance, full of courage, skill and absolute determination that this was to be their day.

When the whistle blew at the end of extra time in a classic contest, the graduates of Páirc an Ághasaigh claimed victory by the slimmest of margins. A fitting finish to an unforgettable journey.

St Patrick's Day Parade -We are taking names of people /groups who would like to take part in this year's Patrick's day parade. Please send/ bring in your details to the information office. The closing date for this will be 7th March.

There was a great turn out for the Set dancing classes that started last Wednesday in the West End Hall . If you are looking to shake off the winter blues come along to the West end hall on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm and dance the Winter blues-and the pounds- away.

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

FDC Group announces new office opening in Killorglin

FDC Group is proud to announce its continued expansion across County Kerry through the newest office opening in Killorglin, week commencing February 9th, 2026. At the centre of FDC’s business strategy is growth, expanding the number of communities the firm serves across Ireland. The opening highlights FDC Group’s deep roots in the area. Founder and Chairman, Jack Murphy, who established the firm in 1973, and recently appointed CEO, Barry Murphy, both share strong personal and professional ties to Kerry, making this expansion particularly meaningful.

The office opening has been a fantastic opportunity for some of FDC’s Killorglin natives to return home and serve their community, including a longtime FDC employee, Rosie Soffer, who has been with the company for over 5 years and will be the Area Manager of the Killorglin office. The new Killorglin office becomes part of the wider Kerry network, alongside locations in Killarney, Listowel and Tralee.

Joining Rosie are Deirdre O’Sullivan, a South Kerry native, and Ian Courtney, with several other new and veteran FDC employees joining the ranks in Killorglin. The team in Killorglin will offer a full suite of services from the office, including accounting, tax advice/ administration, tax consultancy, the likes of Capital Acquisitions Tax and Capital Gains Tax planning, auditing, financial services such as life assurance and pension services and agri consultancy services.

About the Team

Rosie Soffer

I am a Killorglin native. I attended Killorglin Community College and earned my degree in South East Technological University (previously Waterford I.T.). I trained there as a trainee accountant, gaining my ACCA qualification. I have been working both locally and abroad in the U.S.A. in accounting and finance. I joined FDC Group in 2020 as a Qualified Accountant.

I am honoured to assume the role of office manager in Killorglin and beyond thrilled for this opportunity to support the continued growth of FDC Group here.

I look forward to engaging with new clients while continuing to serve existing clients, ensuring they can continue to access a full range of services provided by FDC Group. I am dedicated to delivering a high standard of professional, personable and reliable service to all new and existing clients.

Ian Courtney

Following my secondary education at Secondary School Milltown, I earned a Bachelor of Business Studies from the University of

Limerick. My professional career began in 2017 at Curran Moore & Co., which merged with FDC Group in 2019.

Over the past nine years, I have gained extensive experience by working with diverse teams and serving a broad spectrum of clients across various industries. I am proud to support the expansion of FDC Group in Killorglin. With deep-rooted ties to the Killorglin community, I look forward to delivering a highly professional, client-centred approach to business in my local area.

Deirdre O’Sullivan

I am a South Kerry native, born in Dromid, and I currently reside in Waterville. I attended secondary school in Coláiste na Sceilge, Cahersiveen and I received a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from UCC. I am a Part Qualified Accountant, having worked previously in industry. I joined FDC in January 2026 to complete my ACCA exams.

I look forward to joining the team in the new Killorglin office. The transition from industry to practice is both challenging and exciting.

Leadership Support Driving the Killorglin Expansion

FDC Management is aligned with and actively supporting the venture in Killorglin as part of the FDC Group’s broader business strategy. Longtime FDC employee and Killorglin native Mike Walker has been instrumental in developing the office. Mike commented on the opening, “I believe that this is a great opportunity for both FDC and the people of Killorglin and its hinterland. We already have a significant client base in the Killorglin area and obviously hope to attract additional business when the office opens.”

The recent victories of An Ghaeltacht and Daingean Uí Chúis have been really celebrated and appreciated locally, nationally and internationally and the huge crowds at the homecoming events brought the West Kerry Community spirit to a new level.

And to really capture the spirit what did you think of the wonderful idea of The Dingle Hug by Jimmy Bambury on stage at the homecoming celebrations!!!!.

A special thanks to the clubs, communities and individuals who set bonfires and lined the route during the homecoming evenings and all who travelled to support the teams throughout the long championship campaign. Molaim sibh go léir.

PHONE SCAM MESSAGES. The bogus scam phone messages continue with some very personal and real life appeals which on first glance seem very genuine and needing the recipients immediate attention and response. The most recent this week on my phone reads Hi Dad I’m using this number now, I’ve got a new phone. Can you save it and send me a WhatsApp. This from a 089 number was unsigned and is one to be deleted immediately as are many more which do not seem relevant so caution is required when responding to anything which is unexpected or relevant to ones everyday life, family or interests.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADES. With up to at least 100 American visitors already booked in to take part in the 2026 Dingle St. Patrick's Day Parades its time to get our act together and start planning with about 6 weeks left to Tuesday March 17th.

Last Year the organisers were a little disappointed with the lack of participation by some local big business outlets so be warned we will be especially knocking on the doors of those who did not feature in recent years. Surely there is plenty time in 6 weeks to organise a float or good topical entry especially with so many talented people around in various business and professional activities and with the aforementioned community spirit so evident in the past few weeks.

With the expected increased international participation and following recent events the theme proposed is ---Celebrating Community and Welcome -- which is a wide choice from

which to arrange an entry. Groups and individuals of all shapes and sizes are most welcome to join in what is the official start of the season in West Kerry.

SCOIL CHEOIL AN EARRAIGH. This year the Scoil Cheoil runs from February 18th to 22nd. The 5 Day Traditional Music School pays particular attention to the music and style of Corca Dhuibhne with lessons, displays and concerts led by experienced tutors across many different instruments. Great to see some local outlets recognised in a recent national newspaper coverage of favourite hostelries and experiences by 50 travel insiders and tastemakers.

Kennedy's Bar in Goat Street and the 505 Res-

taurant in Dykegate Street were the Dingle outlets with Tomáisíns in Stradbally also mentioned for their unique charm, welcome and appealing offerings to the public in general. Well done everyone and well deserved for the huge effort that goes into running a successful business outlet at any time of year.

TIDY TOWNS. Dingle Tidy Towns Committee wish to acknowledge the generous donation of €1,500 from The Dingle Marathon organisers to their funds. This donation follows similar such contributions from the Marathon over many years as reward for help with stewarding at various locations before and during the annual events since 2010.

Inch Christmas Day Swim 2025

On Christmas Day, many brave swimmers and cheerful supporters gathered on Inch beach to make a splash for the Kerry Cancer Support Group. A huge thank you to all who jumped into the water, donated money, cheered on the brave swimmers and helped out on the day. A whopping €3647.87 was raised and gratefully received by the Kerry Cancer Support Group who help local families and individuals on their cancer journey. Many thanks to the Inch First Responders team who were available to provide medical assistance if required.

Here’s to Christmas Day 2026, we look forward to welcoming you all to this ever growing event.

IFA

IFA National President Francie O’Gorman was guest speaker at the Regional IFA Meeting held in Halla le Chéile, Brandon recently. Also in attendance were Jason Fleming, County Chairman, IFA along with County Executive and National Kerry delegates. The agenda included updates on key issues affecting farmers, followed by a lively and engaging questions and answers session. Local West Kerry branches held their Annual General Meetings and elected officers for the coming year.

Camp Branch IFA officers elected were:

Second Delegate: Brigid O’Connor. All branches in the West Kerry area were represented on the night.

Complimentary finger food was kindly provided by the IFA. Sincere thanks to the chef and team at Halla le Chéile for the excellent food— it was delicious. Go raibh míle maith agaibh.

Thanks also to Francie O’Gorman, Jason Fleming, all who attended, and to Cumann Forbartha and Leith Triuigh for the use of the hall and local IFA branch members.

Overall, it was a very successful and well-attended meeting.

BURNS NIGHT

Robbie Burns Night in the Railway Tavern Camp on Friday was, as always, a great night of entertainment and fun. The haggis was presented in traditional style by our Scotsman, Alex Reynolds, and piped in by local musicians led by Maria and Tracy.

Our very able Master of Ceremonies, Liam O’Regan, had everyone singing, and Edinburgh man Stuart Flynn joined in contributing eloquently to the theme of the evening, reciting an old Scottish poem in his native language. Absent friends were remembered and included in the toasts to the lassies and laddies. Brendan Kennelly put pen to paper and wrote a lovely tribute poem to a friend no longer with us and the Tralee visitors were not found wanting, singing and reciting throughout the night.

OBITUARY

The death of John Fitzpatrick, Skirlough, Camp occurred on Thursday 22nd January.

John is predeceased by his loving wife Susan. Sadly missed by his loving family, his sister Dorothy, brother Michael and cousin Monica, niece Zoe, brother-in-law Steve, neighbours, relatives and friends.

John Hilliard in a lovely tribute recalled happy days in the life of his good friend John. His travels after retirement which he enjoyed so much and how he came on a motor bike from London with his beloved Susan in 1970 and fell in love with the place and the people of Camp and never went back.

Concluding with words from a poem, a tribute to John from Bernadette Fitzgerald, a good friend of his !

Bridie Goodwin née Deane, Killiney, Castlegregory, died peacefully, at home, surrounded by her loving family on 20th January. Beloved wife of the late Robert and cherished mother of Pádraig, Maura, Brendan, Margaret and Kieran. Bridie’s granddaughter, Emer, delivered a lovely, heart-warming tribute to her grandmother, recalling her commitment, encouragement and her voluntary work within the community.

As President of the ICA, Bridie set up and supported many local guilds. A Carnival Queen in her time too, Bridie was a wonderful ambassador for the community and leaves a great legacy in all she did.

Sadly missed by her loving family, her grandchildren Anthony, Lisa, Robert, Jason, Tara, Emer & Aedín, great-grandchildren Brendan, Sloane and Ciara Rose, sons-in-law Martin & Pádraig, daughters-in-law Susan & Treasa, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends. Sympathy is extended to all.

Jim McCarthy of Keelballylahive, Castlegregory, died peacefully on 18th January.

Beloved son of the late John and Mary, he was a cherished brother of Mary (O’Sullivan, New York) and the late Eugene and Pat, and a dear uncle to Jeanne, Mary, Michael, John, Theresa, Kathy, Diane, Eugene, John, Brian, and the late Joe.

In a lovely and heart-warming tribute at Jim’s funeral Mass, his nephew John reminisced on JIm's life; happy and content, he lived his entire life in the peaceful setting of his home place. John likened his uncle to the biblical Good Shepherd: “I know mine and they know me.” Jim was an expert sheepman, with dogs he trained himself, responding to his commands high in the glen.

Jim was never alone, friends and neighbours called regularly, and his devout Catholic faith sustained him to the end. He bought and sold sheep at Camp Fair over many years, and we pray that he now enjoys the company of all those sheepmen who have gone before him, resting peacefully in the Kingdom of the Lord.

Jim will be sadly missed by his loving family, brother-in-law Michael, grandnephews and grandnieces, relatives, wonderful neighbours, and many friends. Sympathy is extended to all.

Jim was laid to rest in Killiney Cemetery following the requiem Mass celebrated by Fr. Eamonn Mulvihill PP at St. Mary's Church, Castlegregory on Friday. Rest In Peace, Jim.

ST MARY’S BICENTENARY

As St Mary’s Church, Camp, prepares to celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2026, our parish bicentenary celebrations have begun.

The Rosary Group have started with an ancient custom and celebration of St. Brigid's Feast Day this year. On Sundays after the rosary they commenced making St. Brigid's Crosses at O’Dwyer’s Mace Café, prior to St. Brigid's Day on 1st. February. Thank you to our young ladies Brigid Sogabe assisted by Clara Crean who have helped us perfect the making of the crosses.

Fr Eamonn Mulvihill will bless the crosses at the 7.00 p.m. Mass on Thursday, 28th January. Crosses will be available at the back of the church and at O Dwyers Mace over the weekend.

St Brigid’s Cross is an ancient Irish symbol of protection, faith, and new beginnings as we welcome the arrival of spring. Wishing everyone a very happy and blessed St Brigid’s Feast Day.

Díseart Christmas Market

The days are getting longer and brighter, and time is racing off with us into the New Year. About time to pick up my pen and write a heartfelt thank you to all who helped to make the Díseart Christmas Market as uplifting and magical as it was!

THANK YOU helpers, vendors, musicians, visitors, accomodators, supporters! The stalls looked beautiful and Christmassy, the wonderful music made the whole event festive, the donated cakes were a treat, and on top of that we managed to raise €3,300 for Focus Ireland!! And thank you Diseart for having us!
