In an odd quirk of coincidence, two of this year's events at the Féile Bheag Filíochta (7-9 September, mostly in Ballyferriter) will feature well-known West Kerry personalities, who were well-acquainted with one another. The memory of Seosamh Ó Dálaigh, the folklorist and broadcaster from Baile an Bhiocáire, Dún Chaoin, is to be celebrated by the launch of a new collection of the material from the Raidió na Gaeltachta archives of his programme, "Cúinne Joe". That will follow the official opening of the Festival in Áras Bhréanainn on Friday 7th November, and will in turn be followed by a lecture by Dr Seaghan Mac an tSionnaigh on "File na Cille", from Cill Maoilchéadair, a seanchaí who provided lots of material to the collectors from the Irish Folklore Commission.

The two men were well acquainted, and Seosamh collected a great deal of material from Seán. And this year, almost a century later, the two will be, in a sense, reconnected by the Féile Bheag.

Bay Leaf it or Bay Leaf it Not!

Few herbs have swagger quite like the bay leaf — once a crown for emperors, now floating modestly in your stew. The ancient Greeks were stone mad for them, the Romans wore them on their heads, and Emperor Tiberius supposedly donned a hat of bay leaves to ward off lightning. Poets tucked them under pillows for inspiration, and witches and wizards prized them for their mind-bending magic. History’s obsession with this humble leaf is almost comical — but perhaps not misplaced. For centuries, bay leaf has been credited with curing everything from tummy aches to heartbreaks. And let’s face it, pondering the powers of bay might be a welcome distraction from the cost of living, rising energy prices, and missing out in the last budget!

The Laurus nobilis — also known as the bay laurel tree — hails from the Mediterranean, where it thrives in sunshine and sea air. Yet somehow, it has settled happily into Irish gardens, proving that even Mediterranean natives can learn to love a bit of drizzle. Traditionally, it’s been used for its flavour, fragrance, and healing properties — not to mention the odd “special potion for men.” Its leaves, bark, and essential oils are where the magic (and science) lies, giving us its distinctive aroma and flavour. The tree’s flowers and fruits remain charming but mostly overlooked.

We are familiar seeing a wreath of bay leaves (laurels) donned by the victorious in many modern sports harping back to a time when wearing a laurel wreath was prestigious and well-respected. The term “laureate” is bestowed upon those who have achieved high esteem or award for their work – Nobel prize winners and poet laureates are good examples of how the simple bay leaf has earned high regard throughout the ages right up to today. In traditional (folk) medicine it has been widely used to treat migraines, earache, rheumatism, sprains, earaches, and to enhance perspiration (not quite sure what this really means!). It also was used for digestive issues, stomach ache, colic, vomiting, diarrhoea and indigestion. There are reports that bay leaf tea relieved coughs, colds, influenza, bronchitis and upper respiratory infections. Poultices of bay applied to the skin were used to treat pain and neuralgia. It seems “resting on one’s laurels” might actually have been a pretty restorative pastime.

Modern science, as it turns out, has given bay its due. Recent studies have shown that bay leaf contains potent plant compounds like eugenol, linalool and cineole, which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. Researchers have even noted that bay extract may help support healthy blood sugar regulation — one 2022 review in the Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Nutrition found that consuming bay leaf powder improved insulin sensitivity and reduced cholesterol in people with type 2 diabetes. Not bad for something that spends most of its time quietly simmering in your soup. There’s also growing evidence that bay’s essential oil may inhibit certain bacteria and fungi, lending support to its old reputation as a remedy for infections. In short, bay leaf’s chemistry could rival a small pharmacy — though scientists remind us there’s more work to do before we start prescribing stew.

Have you ever noticed that once we are told that something is good for us, we automatically assume that more is better? Not this time! The best way to enjoy bay leaves is a few, regularly rather than a whole bunch of them just once. Bay leaves are indigestible and have a tough fibrous stem

and sharp, pointy leaves – they should never be consumed whole. Injury to the mouth, oesophagus and intestinal linings have been known to happen. However, do not let that put you off adding whole bay leaves to slow-cooking dishes and remove before serving. The flavour imparted by the leaves in cooking comes from its aromatic oils and beneficial nutrients. Similarly, you can make tea from whole leaves by simmering 4 or 5 leaves per cup of water for 10 minutes, leave to rest, covered with a lid for a little while – strain the liquid before drinking. You could also add whole cloves and cinnamon stick to the simmering tea for even more potency especially now as we enter the season of coughs, colds and flu. Sweeten with honey and serve with plenty slices of lemon or oranges for some Vitamin C! Bay leaves are perfect for Autumn and Winter cooking, as the slower cooking allows all the flavour to impart into the dish. Of course, there are other herbs that pack a greater punch, but bay adds a layer of subtle background flavour that allows the other ingredients to shine, a bit like what freshly ground pepper does to a dish. Dried leaves store well in a cool place or if you have more than you need right now, you can freeze them and they’ll last for years.

Bay is one of those quiet heroes of the kitchen — never the star of the show, but the one that makes everyone else shine. It adds subtle depth, a whisper of woodiness that ties a dish together, whether it’s soup, stew or sauce. Dried leaves store well, or you can freeze them if you’re lucky enough to have a tree bursting with bounty.

Manifest some good fortune by writing your wish on a bay leaf and burning it under the full moon Or, for the romantics, simply go to a bay leaf and pick a leaf together, then tear it in half and each keep a piece. Legend says you’ll see each other again — and remain faithful to one another. As the darker evenings draw in and Samhain just around the corner, what better way to pass away the evenings than a little bit of home witchery!

So there you have it: culinary charm, ancient magic, and some convincing science to seal the deal — all in one humble leaf. Whether you’re seasoning stew, taking care of yourself or sealing a spell, there’s something there for everyone.

Ceara & Bríd to “Share The Pain" for Kerry Mental Health Association

TWO west Kerry mothers, Ceara D Treacy and Bríd Lyne, are training hard for a gruelling Hyrox fitness challenge to raise funds for Kerry Mental Health Association. Their goal: to purchase a €10,000 sensory pod for Scoil Bhreac Chluain in Annascaul.

The pair will “Share the Pain” at the Sports Direct Hyrox event in the RDS, Dublin from 14–16 November.

In a true test of endurance, strength, and mental resilience, Hyrox is a global fitness race that blends running with functional strength challenges.

Ceara explained,

“Bríd and I are two parents who feel deeply moved by the challenges faced by children with a range of special needs – and the knock-on impact on the mental health of classmates, teachers, families, and the wider community. Our aim is simple: to purchase the pod outright through this fundraiser. Every donation, big or small, brings us closer to making this a reality. We’re proud to partner with Kerry Mental Health Association, as this project will provide lasting mental health benefits not just for the children, but for everyone involved.”

The Hyrox competitors will complete 8 x 1 km runs, each followed by a demanding workout station.

Ceara and Bríd, supported by the Board of Management of Scoil Bhreac Chluain, nominated Kerry Mental Health Association for this project as the mental health benefits to the children, their families, teaching staff and wider community will be enhanced.

Kerry Mental Health Association aims to benefit the community through the promotion of good mental health and the general welfare of persons with mental health difficulties and to support them, their families, and carers.

Bríd added,

“The sensory pod would offer a calm, safe and stimulating environment that can be tailored to the needs of each child. For pupils who experience a sensory overload, or difficulty with emotional regulation, the pod would provide a therapeutic space to help them self-regulate and feel secure within the school setting. Furthermore, the availability of such a facility within the school would bring a profound sense of reassurance and peace of mind to parents.”

Explosion on the Dingle Train

-Enniscorthy Echo 21 September 1906

On Thursday morning, while the seven o’clock passenger and goods train from Tralee to Dingle was making its way up the steep and dangerous incline from Camp through Gleanagalt, the engine driver observed a wagon containing barrels of petroleum to be on fire.

He put on all possible speed and had only just reached the level area at the top of Gleanagalt Hill when one of the barrels exploded. The result was that all the woodwork of the wagon was shattered and the rails on the line of the permanent way were displaced.

The prompt action of the driver prevented a major catastrophe. Fortunately, none of the passengers or crew were injured and the passengers were able to proceed to Annascaul. A special train left Tralee when the accident was reported for the purpose of clearing the line.

(Amazing that the other barrels didn’t explode. Can you imagine the train and carriages rolling down the valley from the top of Gleann na nGealt, the highest narrow gauge railway line in Ireland and Britain at that time.)

Objection to Ventry Pub Licence

-Kerry Evening Post 01 October 1902

At the Courthouse in Dingle District Inspector Leonard opposed the signing of the certificate for the renewal of the spirit licence held by Miss J. Manning, Ventry, on the grounds that the publican had removed a part of a wall between the licensed premises and the outer yard. This action resulted in an entrance being made to the public house. The alteration meant that it created a difficulty in determining who were the people who would go there for drink on Sundays other than bone fide travellers.

Upon hearing Miss Manning’s solicitor, Mr. Kennedy, as well as the District Inspector and Sergeant Kennedy, the Bench signed the certificate on the understanding that the publican would comply with the requirements of the Constabulary.

Murder in Kerry

-Irish Times 06 September 1879

A private magisterial inquiry was held in the Courthouse in Listowel on Saturday into the circumstances surrounding the wilful murder of James Brosnan, at Islandary, (?) on the 18th of August.

Four people, viz, Patrick Collins, his son Dennis Collins and daughter, Margaret Collins, along with James Brosnan, nephew of the deceased, who were in custody, charged with the crime, were put forward on remand.

The prosecution was conducted by Mr. Mc. Gillycuddy, Crown Solicitor. Several witnesses were examined but nothing was elicited that would throw additional light on the mystery which still surrounds the circumstances of this brutal murder.

The main evidence given merely detailed the unhappy domestic relations which had existed between the deceased and his wife. It is said that this arose out of some extraordinary aversion with which she had regarded her husband ever since they were married. The nephew was discharged from custody, but the other prisoners were again remanded. (Pity we didn’t learn how long they were married and the circumstances of the murder. Can’t find Islandary on any map. Could it be Islandmacloughry?)

Woman Murdered in South Kerry

-Liverpool Daily Post 27 May 1902

Intelligence has reached Tralee that a woman named Amy Riordan was murdered in her own home near Glencar, South Kerry, yesterday. She had two puncture wounds on her head and another on her arm.

The Glencar police are investigating the case. Particulars as to the circumstance surrounding the murder and the motive for the killing are not yet known.

Fisherman Fell from Fenit Pier

-Kerry Evening post 25 June 1915

On Sunday evening last at about 9.30 pm a man named Michael McCarthy fell off the Viaduct, and into the sea at Fenit, while fishing. The tide was fairly rough at the time and McCarthy, who was unable to swim, managed to get to the piling on the disused pier.

It was almost an hour before his cries for help were answered. Patrick Curran, who was living close to the pier, was the first to respond to the shouting. He arrived on the pier, climbed over the railings of the bridge and made his was along the old timberwork to the stranded man. With the aid of a rope, he kept the unfortunate man afloat until more help arrived. That came in the form of Sergeant Gildea who brought a stronger rope. The rescuers succeeded in securing the rope around the man’s body and held him above water until a boat was procured. The rescued man was in a very exhausted condition when first seen and could not have held on much longer.

Shameful Attack and Robbery

-Kerry Evening Post 05 June 1897

An outrage of a most cowardly and inhuman nature was perpetrated at Beale, North Kerry, a few nights ago on an old woman named Mrs. Keane by unknown ruffians. It appears that the victim, who lives alone in a little cottage, was preparing for bed at about half past ten when a loud knocking came to her front door.

Getting no response to their knock the ruffians tried to force the door, but the door resisted their efforts, being a new one and was securely locked and bolted. Using a pitchfork, the attackers then smashed a window and gained access to the cottage.

Then they began to beat her with the sash of the window, demanding to know where her money was hidden. Then knocked her to the floor and kicked the poor old woman. Eventually they left having ransacked the cottage and stolen whatever money she had. The badly injured woman was found the following morning by some people on their way to Mass. She was lying on the floor, unable to get up and bleeding from several wounds.

A priest and doctor were sent for. They administered to the wants of the injured woman. It is said that no hopes are entertained for her recovery. A young man named Mulvihill has been arrested in connection with the assault.

Plans Announced For An Oral History Archive For Milltown

Oral history expert and historian, Dr Tomás Mac Conmara will speak in Milltown at the end of this month to support the launch of a new oral history archive for the area. The Milltown History and Heritage Society has announced plans to begin the collection and preservation of the stories and folklore of the community which it is hoped, will serve as a valuable resource for future generations.

Dr Mac Conmara, who is an award-winning oral historian, lecturer and author, will speak at the Muintir na Tíre Hall in Milltown at 8pm on Friday, 24 October and will introduce the fundamentals for the collection of oral history. The presentation is free of charge and is supported by funding from the Creative Communities Grant Scheme 2025.

Participants will be introduced to the practical skills required in interviewing, recording, and documenting local heritage, as a first step towards creating an oral heritage recording project in Milltown for generations to come.

“We are really excited to have Tomás setting us on the right path towards developing an oral history archive for Milltown,” said Stewart Stephens of the Milltown History and Heritage Society. “The collection and retention of oral history needs to be approached properly, drawing on the right advice and maintaining high standards, so we are pleased to be getting the input of such a renowned expert. The event is open to anyone who would like to attend,” he said.

County Clare native, Dr Tomás Mac Conmara is an award-winning oral historian, author and lecturer who has made over 1,000 oral history recordings across Ireland and has written several books on memory, including The Time of the Tans and The Scariff Martyrs. Tomás runs a Heritage Consultancy with clients across Ireland and internationally, as well as Managing the Cork Folklore Project on behalf of UCC. He is recognised as one of the leading oral historians in the country and delivers a regular history slot on RTE’s The Today Show.

Creamy Butternut Squash Pasta and Sage Brown Butter

As the evenings draw in and the light fades earlier each day, this is exactly the kind of cooking we all crave — warm, deeply comforting and rooted in the season. Butternut squash and other local gourds are at their very best in late autumn, full of natural sweetness and velvety texture. If you can, look for Irish-grown squash. The flavour is worlds apart from the imported varieties.

This dish brings those flavours to the forefront in the simplest, most satisfying way. The pasta is coated in a silky purée of roasted squash, enriched gently with butter and sage, while the remaining diced squash is left whole for a little texture. A quick sage brown butter poured over at the end adds incredible aroma — nutty, savoury and almost caramellike. It’s generous, nourishing food, yet still elegant.

Perfect for a dark November evening, when you want something cosy that feels like a hug but still has a sense of care and craft. Comfort food, done properly, with the best of what’s around us.

Serves 4

Ingredients

350–400g pasta (such as fettuccine or tagliatelle)

1 large butternut squash or local pumpkin, peeled and diced small 100g butter (divided some for sage brown butter and some for cooking squash and the purée)

8–10 fresh sage leaves (whole) + 2–3 chopped salt and pepper

freshly grated Parmesan or Coolea cheese, to serve Method

Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil, add the pasta and cook until just al dente.

While the pasta is cooking, prepare the rest. In a wide pan, melt most of the butter with a few whole sage leaves over medium heat. Let the butter turn just nutty and the sage go crisp — this takes about 3–4 minutes. Remove the sage leaves and keep the brown butter aside.

Add a little more butter to the same pan, then add the diced squash, a little chopped sage, salt and pepper. Turn the heat up slightly and allow the squash to take on a bit of colour. Add a splash of water and cover with a piece of parchment. Cook for 6–8 minutes or until the squash is tender. Remove about half of the cooked squash and blend it with a little butter and a splash of water to make a smooth purée. Add more water if needed to loosen.

Add the drained pasta to a large bowl, spoon over the purée and stir to coat. Fold in the remaining squash. Taste and season with more salt and pepper if needed.

Divide between four warm bowls. Grate plenty of Parmesan on top and finish with the crispy sage leaves. Warm the brown butter for a few seconds and spoon over the pasta.

Old Memories Brought Back To Life

On Saturday 11th October an exhibition of old photographs was unveiled in Halla Le Cheile, Baile Uí Dhuinn An Clochán Bréanainn. It was the culmination of Trojan work done by the local Grúpa Oidhreachta (heritage group) over many months. Photographs were gathered from biscuit tins and attics, from near and abroad, and a huge amount of detective work was put in to identifying those in the pictures while that knowledge was still available. The final results were printed on seven large panels covering specific themes (farming, the sea, the bog and the local schools) with a number of smaller panels showing work which is still being done and will be presented in the future.

The public were thoroughly engrossed in the finished work and studied each of the photographs in depth, some of which are over a hundred years old. A great and important piece of work in preserving the memories of the past and those who went before us. Well done all! Prior to commencement of this year's championship West Kerry seniors hadn't won a game in six years. West Kerry senior football was at an all time low and nobody was rushing to put it right.

A new management team was required. Great credit is due to board chairman, Muiris Ó Fiannachta, who pursued the matter with great vigour and eventually succeeded in installing a very experienced management team with Gabriel Ó Cathasaigh as Bainisteoir and Tomás Ó Flatharta as coach with selectors from all the four participating clubs. Both Gabriel and Tomás lived outside the county and showed extraordinary committment in travelling to all the training sessions from late July onwards. Every facility was made available to players and management and no expense was spared. Funding was required, sponsorship was sought, and there was a very generous response, for which the board is very grateful. The assembled panel, inspired by the passion and commitment of their management team, responded in kind despite the difficulty involved due to An Ghaeltacht's extended run and ultimate success in Intermediate. The team spirit engendered was reflected in a great come back against a very good South Kerry side in Killorglin.

Going into their game against Dingle, West Kerry were missing four players from their starting fifteen, including their captain Brian Ó Beaglaoich and were soon to lose their key centre back Franz Sauerland, who was doing very well on Paul Geaney.

Playing against the wind West Kerry were just two points adrift after nineteen minutes. The awarding and conversion of a penalty was a major boost to Dingle and left the score at 1-9 to 0-6 at half time. A West Kerry two pointer on the 38th minute left the deficit at three points. Dingle responded with points and another great two pointer from West Kerry left four points between sides. Both two pointers were delivered by Cathal Ó Beaglaoich. Dingle would go on to win game on a final scoreline of 1-16 to 0-13. Paul Geaney would score all but one of Dingle's second half points and was hugely influential notching up a personal total of 1-9. This was a cracking hard fought entertaining game of football befitting a local derby. Dingle were pushed to the limit and were never comfortable until the final whistle as evidenced by nobody leaving the ground.West Kerry gave a tremendous spirited performance and they can hold their heads high. Dingle's greater experience and guile helped them see out the game. Despite their obvious disappointment West Kerry team and management will know that they played a huge role in restoring the reputation of West Kerry football. Many thanks to all concerned.

We wish Dingle all the best and hope that they now go on and win it out, following a great win against a much fancied Mid Kerry team in their semi final, and give a man from the west an opportunity to captain Kerry. How fitting that would be given the contribution West Kerry men have made to Kerry football in recent times. Hard to believe it's forty years since Tommy Doyle and Paudie O'Shea did so. Tempus fugit. Also we look forward to An Ghaeltacht's progression in Munster Championship and who would bet against them being there or thereabouts on final day in Croke Park.

Diseart Christmas Market

As the days are getting shorter and nights darker, we are looking forward to our next Diseart Christmas Market, which will take place on December 7th!

Put a note in your calender, you don t want to miss it! We are going strong in our fourth season, with locally made crafts, a raffle and a cafe with live music. An event with and for local people, for visitors and passers-by. All donations and stall fees, as well as proceeds of raffle and cafe will go to Focus Ireland, the wonderful work of Sister Stan for the homeless.

CD Benefits

Dingle Coast & Cliff

Donations were made to Dingle Coast and Cliff and to the RNLI in Valentia this week, following a fund-raising campaign for the marine rescue organisations. Dingle musicians, Fergus O'Flaherty, Mazzarella O’Flaherty with Michelle Flannery operating under the name, Dingle Bay Music produced a version of the timeless classic Dingle Bay, on a single CD. Dedicated to “the memory of those lost at sea” the CD was released in July 2022 and was for sale in businesses, shops and music outlets around the town.

A total of €3,064 was raised from local sales. All the proceeds from the sale of the CD were donated to the two critical rescue groups, with Dingle Coast and Cliff and the RNLI in Valentia each presented with a cheque for €1,532. The organisers would like to thank everyone who supported the project.

Biodiversity in the Inch Dunes

A group of girls from Annascaul School, guided by ecologist Cathy Eastman and with design support from Hannah Sayers, have created a beautiful biodiversity sign for the Inch dunes. Thanks to funding from a Clean Coasts grant and proceeds raised by Inch Community Council at the recent pub quiz, the sign has now been printed and installed outside Sammy’s. The official unveiling took place at the beginning of October. Thank you to everyone involved in bringing this meaningful project to life.

and at least 4 weeks after the baby is born. If you have enough social insurance (PRSI) contributions, you are entitled to Maternity Benefit (including self-employed) for the 26 weeks of basic maternity leave. Maternity Benefit does not cover additional maternity leave.

What is adoptive leave?

If you are a parent who is adopting alone or as part of an adopting couple, you can get 24 weeks’ leave off work with adoptive leave. Only one parent in the couple can qualify for adoptive leave.

What is paternity leave?

Paternity leave gives new parents 2 weeks off work. You can take time off if you are employed or self-employed and can start the leave any time in the first 6 months after the baby's birth. You can also take paternity leave when you adopt a child. Usually, fathers take paternity leave. Paternity leave is also available to same-sex couples.

For an adopted child, the relevant parent is the parent who is not the qualifying adopter for adoptive leave. This means one of you can take adoption leave and the other paternity leave. If you are adopting alone you can take paternity leave if you are not taking adoptive leave. Your employer does not have to pay you during paternity leave, but you may qualify for Paternity Benefit if you have enough PRSI contributions

What is parental leave?

Parental leave lets parents take unpaid leave from work to spend time looking after their children. You can take up to 26 weeks’ parental leave for each eligible child before their 12th birthday. If you work part-time, your entitlement to parental leave is reduced on a ‘pro-rata basis’. Generally, you must have been working for your employer for a year before you are entitled to parental leave. However, if your child is very near the age limit and you have been working for your employer for more than 3 months (but less than one year), you can take ‘pro-rata parental leave’. If your child has a disability or a long-term illness, you can take parental leave until they are 16 years of age.

What is parent’s leave?

Parent’s leave is a statutory entitlement for parents in employment or self-employment. It aims to let working parents spend more time with their baby or adopted child during the first two years. Each parent is entitled to 9 weeks leave for an eligible child.

You may also qualify for a payment called Parent’s Benefit during parent’s leave. It is paid while you are on parent’s leave from work if you have enough social insurance (PRSI) contributions.

Your employer does not have to pay you while you are on parent’s leave, although some employers may ‘top-up’ your parent’s leave- this is set

out in your contract of employment. If you qualify for Parent’s Benefit, you will get €289 each week from the Department of Social Protection. To check the eligibility criteria for Parent’s Benefit, you should contact your local Citizens Information Centre.

What is Force Majeure Leave?

If you have a family crisis, you have a right to limited time off work. This is called force majeure leave. You may need to take force majeure leave for an urgent family reason, such as the unexpected injury or illness of a ‘close family member’. Close family member includes your child, your spouse or partner, your parent or grandparent, your sibling, someone you have a duty of care for or someone who depends on you for care. You can take force majeure leave of one or more days up to a maximum of 3 days in 12 consecutive months, or a total of 5 days in 36 consecutive months (3 years). Depending on your employer and your contract of employment, you may be able to take more than this.

You get paid while you are on force majeure leave. If your employer allows you to take additional force majeure leave, you should check if it is paid.

What is unpaid leave for medical care?

Unpaid leave for medical care gives you 5 days unpaid leave if you need to take time off work to deal with serious medical care for a child or other relevant person like a family member. Your employer can request relevant evidence of the medical need for the leave. The leave is available to both parents and carers. You do not need any minimum service with your employer to take this leave.

You don’t have to give your employer notice to take the leave in emergency circumstances. You should give notice if it’s possible to. Unpaid leave for medical care is different to force majeure leave, which is paid leave for an urgent family crisis.

The Manx Shearwater Rescue Project

This year has seen the largest amount of Manx Shearwater fledglings rescued on the Dingle Peninsula since the Manx Shearwater Rescue Project was started some 15 years ago, with about 150 or more birds collected and released between August and October. While the large increase in rescued birds might well be due to a heightened awareness of the birds’ plight by the people of the peninsula, together with a larger than ever group of volunteers not only responding to calls but actively patrolling stranding hotspots during the night and early in the morning, the reason for the birds straying from their migratory routes by sea and stranding on land remains our ever increasing light pollution on business, private and County Council owned premises and roads.

We are currently evaluating the data we gathered throughout the last few months and would love to hear from anyone who has picked up and released birds without contacting the volunteers so that we can add their birds to our final count (you can whatsapp Britta Wilkens on 087 2316131 with your info).

Finally, a big thank you to everyone on the Dingle Peninsula and beyond (one bird was brought to us all the way from Fermoy, Co.Cork!) who helped with the reporting, collecting and release of these beautiful, long-lived, amber listed seabirds that return year after year from the waters off South America to breed on the Blasket Islands during the summer months.

CAMPFEST

Well folks, that's another successful Campfest done and dusted, and what a great weekend it was for the 21st year. The weekend had everything from wind and rain to a few beers, plenty of craic and is no doubt a great weekend for the body, mind and soul.

Well done to Mark on the purchase of his dream Bar, I'd say he will be sleeping in the workshop tonight! Thanks so much to everyone who gave very generously at the auctiont, with this year's charities being very special and close to home. As always, the biggest thank you goes to the entire O'Neill family, Eoghan, Brian, Tracy, Jess, Ann and staff. Special mention of the main man himself Mike, who was certainly looking down on us this weekend with the weather, and never far from our thoughts.

Thanks also to Mike Fitzgerald and his staff from The Junction Bar for feeding everyone and letting us use his car park again this year.

DISCOUNT WEEKEND IN DINGLE . The Business Chamber and Dingle Peninsula Alliance are planning a series of events and offers to encourage more people to support their SHOP LOCAL efforts this year. The programme includes activities for children to allow parents more free time to visit retail outlets who will be participating in a Discount Shopping Weekend from Friday December 5th through to Monday December 8th. The Childrens events will continue through December which so far has some very popular music and cultural concerts as well as the world renowned Lá an Dreoilín on St Stephen's Day.

Guided Walks with Historical Talks from Dingle Mart Car Park to The Famine Graveyard and also to Garfinny should interest locals and visitors as should a Car Treasure Hunt taking in some of West Kerry's hidden or forgotten gems. AMERICAN PROMOTION IN THE BIG E. Having spoken to a number of people who were part of the now annual business promotion trip to the Big E this year I was pleasantly surprised to learn what an amount of business results for various local producers and outlets which really pays dividends for The West Kerry Peninsula. Most of those whom I met spoke of the affect and affiliation of the descendants of Irish Emigrants domiciled in America who are so keen to have contact with people from this area which saw so many permanently leave their native sod in difficult times.

AMAL/DOCHAS PROJECT. Following a huge fundraising effort by the local Refugee Community Sponsorship Group it is planned to welcome a Syrian Family of two Adults and three children to resettle in Dingle within the next few weeks. They will indeed be most welcome and hopefully will integrate as part of our community in a short time.

PHOENIX CINEMA. The plans by Yvonne McGuinness and Cillian Murphy to convert the Phoenix Cinema in Dykegate Lane recently got a huge boost with the announcement of a grant close to one million euro from the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund. Although the plans are only at a design and architectural stage every positive step will be welcomed by the many people involved in different cultural groups in West Kerry and beyond who know such a facility is badly needed in a town like Dingle. Accommodation Awards keep coming to the Peninsula this time its Greenmount House who are were announced as The Guest House of the Year at the Georgina Campbell Irish Food and Hospitality Function 2025 in Dublin recently. Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

OIFIG AN PHOIST The Dingle Post Office will be relocating to Garvey’s Supervalu Shopping Centre in Holyground from its present location in Main Street in early November with the reopening date to be confirmed once suitable renovations are completed. Directional signage will be in place to avoid confusion for users of this essential service.

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

FOOD FESTIVAL. The theme and hard work behind the adopted slogan of ZERO WASTE TO LANDFILL during the recent FOOD FESTIVAL certainly took a huge step forward again this year. Very little litter was evident on the streets throughout the weekend with most of the huge numbers who sampled the offerings taking care to use the bins or enquire at the transfer/rinse stations on the correct method to dispose of their surplus or leftovers. Aodán Ó Conaill & Judy O'Shea lead the Dingle Chapter - one of Ireland’s largest with over 130 members and continuing to grow. Other parts of Kerry have chapters too - remote workers can attend any chapter’s events.

Circa 18 members of Dingle/Corca Dhuibhne chapter met up recently and had a great social evening. Several of those were newcomers (returnees or new to the area) who took a chance on joining-in with something they hadn't done before. Because we aim to keep it informal and friendly, they were rewarded with getting to know regular attendees and a relaxed jovial occasion resulted.

Introductions made at events like these are a great springboard for further connection, which in turn is undoubtedly helping build a stronger, better connected

West Kerry community. We also love that Grow Remote events are supporting our local businesses and organisations.

Memorial Walk

Join a community memorial walk in Muiríoch this November.

Walking the short route from Halla na Muirí to Ballydavid village on Sunday, 17 November, around 3.30pm. The third Sunday of November each year marks the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDR). #WDoR2025

Remembering in particular this year is the family of Seán Ó Criomhthain, who walked this route most days — to go fishing, or to meet his friends in Begley’s pub of an evening.

This time fifty years ago, at 77, Seán was a widower living alone in his home in Muiríoch. He had moved his young family there from the Great Blasket over thirty years earlier. Like his father, not only was he a fisherman, but also a published author, writing about island life and then about the change to living on the mainland.

By Christmas 1975, he was no longer with us — having been struck by a vehicle as he was walking to Ballydavid, earlier that month.

In the fifty years since, many families have faced similar sudden loss. Help remember all who’ve died on our roads by joining this memorial, if you are able — a kind act of remembrance.

Meeting point: The yard by Halla na Muirí.

Use Eircode V92 VY15, but parking elsewhere would be best.

The walk is about one kilometre, along a coastal road.

Those unable to go on foot could take the LocalLink bus, which passes around the same time.
