Meeting your Protein Needs – Not Just for Shakes and Six-Packs

If I had a euro for every time someone told me they “don’t need much protein because they’re not a bodybuilder or training for a marathon,” I’d be writing this from a sun lounger in the Riviera instead of my kitchen table in West Kerry. The truth is, protein isn’t just for weightlifters grunting over dumbbells or elite athletes chasing finish lines. It’s for all of us — whether we’re running after toddlers, navigating menopause, recovering from illness or simply trying to get out of the armchair without sounding like a rusty gate. Protein is busy every minute of the day, building hormones, repairing tissues, keeping our immune system sharp, and yes, supporting our muscles. Yet somewhere along the way, protein picked up a reputation as either a gym-bunny’s obsession or something to fear in case it damages our kidneys. It’s probably time we straightened that out, don’t you think?
So what actually is protein, apart from something plastered across yoghurt pots and snack bar wrappers these days? In simple terms, it’s made up of smaller building blocks called amino acids, which our bodies use to build and repair tissues, produce hormones and enzymes and keep our immune system humming along. Unlike carbohydrates and fats, which mainly provide energy, protein is about structure and function — it holds us together and keeps everything running smoothly under the bonnet.
There are about twenty standard amino acids, nine of which are called “essential” because our bodies can’t make them, so must get them from food. Examples include leucine, important for building muscle; tryptophan, which helps make serotonin for mood and sleep; and lysine, crucial for immunity and collagen. The rest are called non-essential because our bodies can produce them as needed.
Animal proteins like eggs, fish, meat and dairy contain all the essential amino acids in the right balance and are easily absorbed. These are referred to as complete proteins. Plant proteins are excellent too but might be lower in one or more essential amino acids or slightly less well absorbed. That doesn’t mean you have to live on animal products — it just means if you’re plant-based, it helps to mix things up. For example, rice is low in lysine but high in methionine, while beans are the opposite, so pairing them gives you the full set of amino acids your body needs. The same goes for combinations like hummus and wholemeal pitta or peanut butter on wholegrain toast. Getting a good mix of protein sources can make a real difference to your health.
Now that we’ve busted the myth that protein is only for fitness fanatics, it’s worth busting another one: muscle isn’t just about looking toned or lifting shopping bags. Protein and muscle work hand in hand to keep us strong and resilient as we age. Muscle plays a vital role in maintaining metabolism, supporting our immune system and — here’s the part many people don’t realise — acting as one of the body’s main storage spots for glucose after we eat carbohydrates.
The trouble is, as we get older, we start losing muscle quietly and steadily. From our forties onwards, most people lose between three and eight percent of muscle mass each decade and the rate can speed up after sixty.
This is called sarcopenia. Part of it happens because hormones, including oestrogen and testosterone which help build muscle, naturally decline with age and part of it is simply because many of us become less active as the years go on. Whatever the reason, muscle loss leads to weakness and frailty. Less muscle also means less storage space for glucose, so more sugar lingers in the blood instead of being tucked away safely. Over time, this can raise the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. People with lower muscle mass are far more likely to struggle with blood sugar control and face a higher risk of metabolic diseases.
The encouraging news is that getting enough protein and doing some resistance exercise — whether it’s lifting weights, carrying shopping bags or simple bodyweight moves at home — can help maintain muscle and strength well into later life. Looking after your muscles isn’t just about staying steady on your feet; it’s one of the best ways to protect your metabolism, energy levels and overall quality of life as you age.
So, how much protein do we actually need? The old advice of 0.8 grams per kilo of body weight per day is likely just enough to avoid deficiency but not enough to help us stay strong and healthy as we get older. Many experts now suggest aiming for 1.0 to 1.2 grams per kilo daily and sometimes up to 1.5 grams for older adults, people recovering from illness, or those doing regular strength training. It’s also wise to spread your protein out across meals rather than loading it all into dinner. And for those worried about their kidneys — if yours are healthy, there’s no strong evidence that eating a bit more protein will harm them.
So how do we actually get enough protein without living on chicken breasts and chalky shakes? Some of the most bioavailable proteins come from eggs, whey, tofu and tempeh — great options whether you’re an omnivore or plant-based. Breakfast could be eggs on toast, Greek yoghurt or a smoothie with protein powder. Lunch might be a tuna sandwich, lentil soup or a tempeh salad. Dinner could be fish, chicken, tofu stir-fries or a hearty bean chilli.
If you’re plant-based, just mix and match. Rice and beans, hummus and pitta, or peanut butter on wholegrain toast all help tick the protein boxes. And don’t forget snacks — nuts, roasted chickpeas or a bit of cheese can quietly boost your total. Small changes really add up — no dumbbells or so-called protein bars required.
Signs you might not be getting enough protein include feeling tired, catching infections easily, thinning hair, slow healing or feeling weaker than usual. Even swelling in your legs can sometimes be a clue. Of course, these symptoms can have other causes too, so if they persist, check in with your GP. But sometimes, a bit more protein is all it takes to feel better.
If there’s one thing to take away, it’s that protein and muscle are key players in helping us live not just longer, but better. Around the world, people who stay strong and active well into old age combine regular movement with meals that include enough good-quality protein to keep their muscles in shape. It’s not about fancy diets or gym memberships but giving your body what it needs to stay steady, energetic and resilient as the years go by. Keep moving, eat a variety of protein-rich foods and look after those muscles – they’re working hard to look after you.

At our recent AGM of Kerry County Council in Áras an Chontae, on Monday 23rd June 2025, my term as Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council came to an end. I look forward to continuing to serve you, the people of Kerry with determination, ambition and endeavour as a County Councillor for Corca Dhuibhne in the Municipal District of Castleisland Corca Dhuibhne in the County of Kerry. Thank you for placing your trust in me. It has been my honour to represent you as Cathaoirleach.
To serve as Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council in 2024/2025 as my dad, Tom Fitzgerald did in 1979/1980 has been a great honour for me. Thank you to my fellow councillors for their collaboration and commitment throughout the year. Thank you to all of our Directors of Services and all our Council staff. Go raibh míle maith agaibh as an onóir agus an pribhléid a bheith tofa mar an chéad Cathaoirleach Comhairle Contae Chiarraί ό an Cheantar Bardasach Oileán Ciarraí agus Chorca Dhuibhne. It is with a mixture of pride, gratitude, and a touch of sadness that I stand before you today, as I formally bring to a close my term as Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council. Serving as Cathaoirleach over the past year has been both an honour and a privilege.
From the day I took up this role, I knew that the job would be both challenging and rewarding and it has been both in equal measure. We are making progress with delivering social housing like in Dingle, and a start with affordable housing in Tralee and Killarney.
I look forward to working with our new Cathaoirleach in making the case for the whole of our county to be able to deliver serviced sites and affordable housing. We have faced complex decisions and challenges, but throughout, I have been inspired every day by the resilience, warmth, and spirit of the people of Kerry.
This county, our county, is more than just a place on the map. It is a community of proud towns and villages, of traditions passed down through generations, of stunning landscapes that attract people from all over the world, and of people who never fail to support one another in times of need.
Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to visit every corner of Kerry, to meet with community groups, businesses, schools, and individuals working tirelessly for the betterment of their towns and neighbours. Those moments — the conversations, the shared ambitions, the pride in the county — are what I will remember most.
Thank you to my family and friends for putting up with me throughout the year. I couldn’t have done it without their support. I want to thank my fellow councillors for their collaboration and commitment throughout the year. We may not have always
agreed, but the strength of this chamber lies in our shared goal, to serve the people of Kerry with integrity and care.

The Slea Head Road

This curious road, steep as stairs – was made in 1759 by the Lord Ventry of that day for the improvement of his property. The road has proved to be of great advantage and is kept in working order at the expense of Lord Ventry and other gentlemen who use it.
It is too steep for nervous people to keep their seats as horses make their way up and down. Farmers have profited by this new road by carrying crops to the Dingle market and have increased their tillage to meet the demands of that market.
We drove to the village of Coumeenole, which is situated in a ravine of the mountain, and where the road at present ends. The village inhabitants are a hardy, handsome race. Many of the children are really beautiful with their large, dark Spanish eyes and bright coloured hair. They all speak Irish. After spending some time here, we walked around the cliffs towards Dunquin, then retraced our steps and drove once again around Slea Head. I was perfectly charmed with all I had seen and regretted that I had not brought a pencil and paper to make some sketches.

At St. Paul’s, Avenue Road, London, Captain Robert Hickson, The Buffs, of Ballintaggart, Dingle, County Kerry, married Annette Younghusband of College Villas, on February 7th.
(The Buffs were a regiment of the British Army.)
The Bride was Aged Eleven
-Mayo Constitution 10 October 1862
This paper focuses on a story that a marriage took place in Kerry between a groom aged twenty years and a bride aged eleven years. The mother of this poor child, it should be recorded, did everything in her power to prevent the unnatural union.
She tried in vain to conceal her daughter and, equally in vain, tried an appeal to the clergyman who was prepared to perform the marriage ceremony. But her efforts were futile, the marriage went ahead, and the clergyman received £17 – a very large fee. The groom’s father has been served with notice to quit his home by his landlord.
The 1822 Famine in West Kerry

Dingle and its District once had a comfortable peasantry, but not a frac tion of that comfort now remains. The town once carried on a successful commerce in corn, butter and the linen trade. However, nothing of those days remains except the memory.
Efforts to support half the population of 33,143 souls, who are currently without means, and local efforts of a generous nature, in an hour of such calamity, should be recorded of those who owe their wealth and respect ability to the work and sweat of the people.
It should be remembered that the linen manufactory supported over 3000 people and these people are now in a state of extreme distress. The ter rible storm of last April caused the total destruction of 20 fishing vessels which resulted in almost 1,000 people being out of work and dependant on charity. Most of these people are now facing scarcity, starvation and famine.
Ballyheigue Runaway

During the annual horse meeting in Ballyheigue on St. Stephen ‘s Day a horse attached to a common cart bolted through the village and dashed
itself against the Castle gate.
During its mad gallop two men were struck by the animal or the cart resulting in their being wounded with cuts on their heads and hands. The horse was badly injured in its forelegs.
On St. Stephen’s Night (no location) an army reserved man named Clifford was admitted to the County Infirmary with his ear split and a deep cut on his head. He told the authorities that a bottle had been thrown at him during a row.

Kerry Dancers Return From World Cup 2025 in Spain
The West Kerry and Tralee School of Dancers, who have just returned from the experience of a lifetime at the Dance World Cup 2025 in Burgos, Spain. This prestigious event features over 120,000 children and young adults from 73 countries competing in their national qualifiers and the world finals. Dancers aged 4 to 25 participate in various genres, all vying for a spot at the annual DWC World Finals. Eight dancers from Castlegregory, Tralee, Killarney, and Killorglin were among 8,500 selected to represent their countries, showcasing Ireland and Kerry with pride and excellence. The group was brought together by Dr. Trish Melton, Director Of Cantarina Music and Dance School and The Kerry Tap Ensemble and Tara Dore, Principal of Tara Dore School of Dance. The two directors formed an Elite Training Team, selecting dancers from their schools to train intensively on an Elite Training Programme, a six month initiative led by Dr. Trish Melton who also served as the main choreographer for the 20 routines entered by these 8 dancers covering a wide range of styles from tap to jazz to contemporary to ballet.

Once again, our Féile an Phráta has been fantastic fun, we have had a few super nights tasting, analysing and socialising. In total, 60 Growers entered the eight area competitions in the past week, the youngest was 14, the oldest 85, HUP! The 8 Finalists battled it out in the Final on Sunday 13 Jul. Ensuring the Competitions were run off without a hitch involved a total of 34 Judges, 22 other Volunteers and eight Publicans.

Because the weather was particularly suitable during this spring, the standard of potato was exceptionally good.
In the end, the overall Champion of the ‘Spud Off’ was Deirdre O’Callaghan of Baile na nGall Cois Cósta (Queens), Deirdre was the first woman ever to win the Spud Off. Páid Bán Baker of Baile na nGall Cois Chnoic (Queens) was in second place; Micí Ó Conchúir of Ceann Trá (Queens) was in third place. Each received a cheque (€200.00, €100.00, €100.00) and a speciallycommissioned plaque, by famous potter John Sheehy. The Paddy Phurge Cup was also presented by Geoff Penny (Spud Champion 2024). The Sunday Evening of the Final Competition concluded with traditional music, bragging and stories, deep into the night.
An Fhéile has always been firstly about the craic, about our community, about celebrating with our neighbours, about connection, and about promoting our native language, an Ghaoluinn, - just fun and games. However, the Organisers and the Judges ensure that everything is done in a way that guarantees the competitions clearly remain a ‘blind’ tasting. An independent person receives the spuds, delivers them to the Judges; the Judges do not know whose spud they are tasting at any time.

AGRICULTURAL SHOW. The Annual West Kerry Agricultural Show will be held in the Dingle Mart premises and surrounding fields this Sunday July 20th starting from midday. All entries are requested to be registered as early as possible to facilitate the judging and the smooth running of the many sections and categories on the days programme.
Some minor traffic diversions for safety reasons will be in place for some hours during the day. Another local event worth supporting so we urge our readers to head to Spa Road for a few hours on Sunday afternoon.
SUMMER MARKET. The Bia Dingle Summer Sunday Market will continue in the Wave Theatre Car Park in The Wood from 10a.m. to 4p.m. each Sunday in July and August.
A wide selection of locally produced goods will be on offer by the members of Bia Dingle so fresh food and ingredients available for all.
SPORT. Well done on the recent results and best of luck to the Kerry Ladies and Mens teams who have progressed to the latter stages of the All Ireland Finals over the past few weeks. Now the hunt for those elusive tickets really begins with a number of groups organising draws for club funds so with a bit of luck one might still be in Croke Park to cheer on the Kingdom on

One bone of contention I would like to air with regard to the very ill-considered decision by the GAA administrators not to match up the Kerry and Tyrone Minor and Senior Games on the same day when the opportunity presented itself. It shown little regard for the hard pressed supporters of both counties let alone the opportunity for the Minors to play in Croke Park as was the tradition for many years.

TIDY TOWNS. Work evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. We really need support with litter collection, gardening to keep our flower tubs and beds weed free and regular maintenance of the footpaths, kerbs and hedges which are all growing fast at present due to the combination of heat and moisture. Míle buíochas to the few regular volunteers who strive to keep our town in a presentable state for locals and visitors to enjoy.
In this era of emphasis on sustainability, less travel and rising costs surely the authorities could have made slight adjustments to the fixture list and help the environment with less travel and more safety on our roads and less costs for the genuine supporters who like to attend every fixture.
Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.
PARKING. The Business Chamber again appeal to the employees who drive to work in Dingle to please park your vehicles in the outskirts of town and leave the town centre parking spaces for people who come to do business in town. We have noticed on a continuous basis the same vehicles parked for hours in the same positions which become vacant around 6p.m. in the evening. The turnover of vehicle parking spaces in the town centre and side streets should be happening every hour at least which is the normal time taken for most business or shopping experiences but is not happening at present.
A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.
There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!
Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.
Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A quick check on one street recently saw just 3 spaces become vacant over a 1 hour period and those 3 spaces then turned over every 15 minutes.
A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Community Rallies for Inch Beach
A heartfelt thank you to all who showed their support at the Kerry County Council Meeting in Castleisland on Thursday, July 10th. Your presence, placards, and passion sent a clear and powerful message: Inch Beach needs urgent attention and proper investment.
The silent protest held outside the meeting drew strong media coverage, with radio and news outlets helping amplify the voices of locals who have long endured seasonal traffic chaos, unsafe parking, and inadequate facilities. The gathering shone a light on the frustration felt by many residents, as the €50,000 awarded in 2021 for the Inch Beach Infrastructure Plan has yet to produce a visible result.
While the long-awaited plan itself was not presented, there were encouraging signs of movement. Kerry County Council has agreed to the formation of a steering committee involving the Council, National Parks and Wildlife Service, and local community representatives. This step marks a positive shift toward collaboration and accountability.
Over the weekend, some improvement was observed, with new road signage installed and a better management of beach parking, offering a glimpse of what could be achieved with consistent and coordinated effort.
To all who made the trip to Castleisland, crafted posters, or sent messages of support—míle buíochas. Your commitment made it a proud day for Inch and laid the groundwork for future progress.

Explore the Seashore on Kerry’s Blue Flag Beaches
Throughout July and August, Kerry County Council have engaged marine biologists from Sea Synergy to deliver Seashore Explore events on all Kerry’s Blue Flag beaches. Walk the shoreline and go beachcombing and rock pooling in these informative, fun and FREE workshops sponsored by the Heritage Council. Sea Synergy’s marine experts will open your eyes to the amazing marine life living along our coast, explain why these beaches are so special and how we can all help to protect and look after these important habitats.
Discover the amazing behaviours and features the animals and plants living on the seashore have evolved to cope with one of the harshest environments on our planet. “Introducing people to our blue backyard is so important. We are all connected to the ocean and when we uncover its wonder and what lives on our local beaches it helps build our pride of place, understanding of the marine environment and can move us to help protect it” says marine biologist and Founder of Sea Synergy Marine Awareness, Research & Activity Centre, Lucy Hunt.
Twelve workshops are being held at Kerry’s Blue Flag beaches throughout the summer, kicking off with Derrynane Beach on July 18th and Ballinskelligs Beach on July 26th. The Seashore Explore events will last for approximately 1.5 hours and be led by a marine biologist from Sea Synergy. There are limited places so booking is essential! CAMP TWINNING
Twenty people from Camp enjoyed a wonderful week in Glomel, Brittany from 5th - 12th July on the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the twinning between Camp and Glomel founded by Serge le Faucheur and Kathleen Simmons in 1995.
Celebration of our common cultural connection was the keynote of the week with long established friendships being renewed and new ones made and all the while, a mutual sharing of music, song and dance to create a marvellous ambiance.
There was one long day when we visited a chapel dedicated to St. Michael situated on top of the second highest hill where a raging inferno destroyed the roof some years ago but the building itself was saved thanks to the helicopters spraying water on it from the air.
Many of us went to see the Valley of the Saints where there are approximately 180 statues from all over Brittany and some from elsewhere, including St. Patrick, who was ordained a Priest in France.
We enjoyed fabulous walks around the lake in Glomel and some cooled off in its waters and the culmination of the exchange was in Salle du Lac, beside the lake on Thursday night, a very joyous occasion, renewing ties of friendship once again with a celebratory meal, music, song, dance and presentation by our group of a book of photos covering the 30 years.

Massive congratulations to Annascaul Seniors, Division 4 champions. The Club would like to thank all supporters who travelled to Waterville for the game and who supported the team all
year. It was a great evening for the parish who are very proud of all the players and also pay tribute to all the management and parents and those who help the team in any way making days like this happen. Fantastic achievement, Annascaul Abu!
Well done to our B team who defeated Dingle GAA Club on 1-17 to 1-13, recently in the West Kerry GAA - Ciarraí Thiar CLG Championship.

Our new event this year was the Race for All, which really represented our inclusive ethos as a community. The year is not finished for our 7 a side soccer, our artists and for our athletes who have regional and All Ireland finals in the coming weeks. A dark cloud of sorrow and sadness descended upon us on hearing of the untimely death of Bríd Reidy, a lovely young mother and much loved wife, daughter and family member and friend.
Brid died peacefully at home in Drom, Cloghane, surrounded by her heartbroken family, on 7th July, adored wife of Warren, devoted mother of Hannah & Nathan, cherished daughter of Eila and the late Daniel and dear sister of Siobhán. Deepest sympathy is extended to Warren, Hannah and Nathan and all her family and friends who mourn Brid.

The news of the passing of Deborah Uí Dheargáin (née O'Dowd) Páirc An Fhia, Lispole, was received with sadness by all who have fond memories of her in life, a great community person, always promoting the Irish language and culture of Corca Dhuibhne.

Margaret Anne Murphy (née Kirby) of Riverside, Oakpark, Tralee and formerly Blackpool, England, died peacefully on 3rd July in the tender care of Our Lady of Fatima Home, Tralee. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Sean Murphy Tralee and Camp who passed away on 14th April. Deepest sympathy is extended to Ann and Dan Maloney and family, Camp and all the Murphy and Kirby families on their sad loss.
Margaret is remembered fondly in Camp often visiting with her late husband Sean. She was a lovely lady. Rest In Peace.

On this the first anniversary of Nora's passing, we; Michael, Moss and the Kennedy family would like to thank most sincerely those who attended the removal, funeral mass and burial. We would like to thank all of those who sent mass cards, messages of condolences, floral tributes and helped in any way during Nora's time in hospital. We would like to thank the staff in ICU in University Hospital Kerry, in ICU in Cork University Hospital and finally the palliative care unit in Tralee.
We would like to give a special thanks to Fr. Michael Moynihan for officiating at Nora's funeral mass and Noreen Ashe for her beautiful music. A sincere thanks to Donal O'Connor of O'Connor's Funeral Home for all of his kindness. Thanks to Adam's Restaurant Dingle for the delicious food after the funeral.

Dingle Woman on Shortlist for Business Book Awards
Dingle woman Susan Ní Chríodáin was somewhat stunned and thrilled that her book Leading Beyond the Numbers has been shortlisted for the 2025 Business Book Awards in the U.K. The awards are presented to authors whose books inspire leadership skills and styles for positive impact. The full title of the book is Leading Beyond the Numbers: How accounting for emotions tips the balance at work. The book has been recognised in the Leadership Category for its bold challenge to conventional thinking and reframing emotional intelligence as a strategic advantage.
One reviewer described the book as ‘A roadmap for measuring the unmeasurable’ while another asked the question ‘How come nobody ever thought of this before?’ Combining neuroscience, finance and personal experience it shows that the most effective leaders focus on people and performance – never one at the expense of the other.
The Head Judge of the Business Book Awards Jacq Burns commented: “This year’s shortlist shows a diverse range of powerful ideas and practical tools for business leaders, entrepreneurs and changemakers”.
“I was shocked and delighted when I heard the news about the shortlisting and I’m really looking forward to the final selection of winners at a function in London in September. Winning would be great, but a nomination is almost as good” she told West Kerry Live this week.
Susan, who lives and works in Oxford, was also surprised to receive a silver medal for her book from the Indie Book Awards.

Summer Stars is the public library national summer reading programme for children that runs from the start of June until the end of August. All children throughout the country are invited to join the adventure and to enjoy the fun and pleasure of reading and writing over the summer. Notice Of Traffic Management System On Slea Head Drive
Kerry County Council have re-established the advisory clockwise traffic management system for motorists on Slí Cheann Sléibhe during the peak visitor season, until Friday 12th September. During this period, the Council invites vehicles to travel in a clockwise direction around Slea Head, commencing in Dingle / Daingean Uí Chúis, then on to Ceann Trá, Cheann Sléibhe, Com Dhíneol , Dún Chaoin, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, Muríoch, An Fheothanach and return to Dingle / Daingean Uí Chúis.
A Kerry County Council employee will be stationed each day from 10.30 am to 4.00pm at Com Dhíneol encouraging vehicles travelling anti-clockwise to respect the advisory.
Visitors will be encouraged to follow the recommended route from the outset resulting in more time to relax and enjoy the magnificent views, attractions, history and culture of this beautiful part of Kerry.
Local access will be maintained as normal.

Who Was Sam Maguire?

Every man, woman and child in Ireland has heard of the Sam Maguire Cup and indeed most Kerry people have laid a hand on it at one time or another. But who was Sam Maguire and why was the leading trophy in Gaelic football named after him?
Before I was asked to write this article, I had a vague idea that he was just a personality in recent Irish history. When I began to ask people about him, I discovered a profound absence of knowledge. So, I had to explore many sources before succeeding in painting the following im -
age of the man.
Sam Maguire was a Protestant and a West Cork man. He was born in Maulabraca, near Dunmanway, in 1879. He was a brilliant student and had a very successful academic career. He joined the Civil Service and was transferred to London just before the end of the 19th century. He immediately joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood and worked tirelessly for the Irish cause.
He used his influential position in the British Civil Service to obtain invaluable information which he passed on to the movement in Ireland. His position was one of great danger and if discovered he would almost certainly have been executed as a traitor to the Crown. He became the chief intelligence officer of the I.R.B. in Britain and his service to the organisation was colossal. It was Sam Maguire who swore Michael Collins into the I.R.B. and the ‘Big Fella’ always had the greatest respect for his fellow countyman.
Sam Maguire was also a footballer of renown and played for London in three All-Ireland finals, 1900, 1901 and 1903. He captained the 1901 and 1903 teams. The system at the time was that the home All-Ireland winners played London in the real final. However, London never won an All-Ireland title.
During Maguire’s years they were beaten by Dublin, Tipperary and in 1903 by Kerry, who won their first final. Sam was described as a player of immense skill, a shrewd defender and very mobile.
He continued to serve in London where he was a vital cog in the I.R.B. network leading up to
the 1916 rising. He finally returned to Ireland in 1922, and, in declining health, he retired to his native parish. He died there at the comparatively early age of 48. Sam had dedicated his crowded life to Irish freedom. But, like many others who did likewise, he was heartbroken because of the Civil War. He is buried in St. Mary’s churchyard in Dunmanway.
The famous trophy which bears his name was first presented to the All-Ireland winners of 1928, the year after Sam’s death. Bill Gannon, of the Kildare team was the first captain to lift the Sam Maguire Cup. But the cup is now the worst for wear and 1986 is the last year it will be presented. The retired Sam Maguire Cup will then be exhibited in the National Museum. The name of Sam Maguire, Gael and Patriot will thus be remembered for generations to come. After you register for the scheme, you will get a plastic swipe card for each person named on the registration form. You should show this card whenever you collect your medication or appliances from the pharmacy. You should use the same pharmacy in a month to avoid paying more than the maximum €80. You do not have to register with a pharmacy for the scheme.
The HSE Primary Care Reimbursement Service provides a list of medicines or aids provided under the Drugs Payment Scheme. Appliances
covered include positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines and rental costs for oxygen.

How to claim a refund for amounts over the threshold
If you use two or more pharmacies in one month you may spend over the maximum threshold of €80. If this happens you can then apply for a refund of the amount you spent above the €80 threshold. To apply for a refund, complete the refund claim form which you can get from your Local Health Office or local Citizens Information Office, or call 0818 22 44 78. Post the completed claim form to the address given on the form. You can check the status of your application for a refund at drugspayment.ie.

Strawberry Dutch Baby Pancake

Carefully remove the hot pan from the oven and add the butter. Once it melts, pour in the batter and return the pan to the oven. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the pancake has puffed up and is golden brown around the edges. Take care when removing the pan, as the handle will be very hot.
To serve, spoon the warm strawberry filling into the centre of the pancake and top with a generous dollop of freshly whipped cream, lightly sweetened with icing sugar. Garnish with a few mint leaves and enjoy immediately.

Summer time in West Kerry, there’s nothing better than cooking with local, seasonal produce – and few things capture the taste of the season quite like fresh local strawberries. Bursting with sweetness and flavour, they’re the star of this simple yet stunning dish: a Strawberry Dutch Baby Pancake.
This baked pancake is the perfect mix of ease and elegance. It comes together quickly and makes a brilliant brunch centrepiece, a light lunch, or a show-stopping dessert. The pancake puffs up beautifully in the oven, creating a golden, crispy edge with a soft, custardy centre – the perfect base for a warm strawberry compote, a dollop of whipped cream, and a scattering of mint.
It’s one of those recipes that looks impressive, tastes even better, and couldn’t be easier to make. The secret? Letting good local ingredients do the talking. So, find yourself with a punnet of sweet Kerry strawberries this week, give this recipe a go – you won’t be disappointed.
Ingredients
For the Strawberry filling
250g large strawberries, sliced
1 tbsp. local honey
1 lemon, juiced some thyme leaves
ground black pepper
For the pancake
3 eggs
1 tbsp. caster sugar
150ml milk
100g flour
dash of vanilla extract
pinch of salt
30g butter
To finish
100ml fresh cream, whipped and a little icing sugar added to it mint leaves, to garnish
Method
To make the filling, place the sliced strawberries in a small saucepan with the honey, lemon juice, and a few thyme leaves. Cook gently over a low to medium heat for about 5 to 8 minutes, until the strawberries begin to soften and release their juices. Taste, then add a pinch of freshly ground black pepper to enhance the flavour. This can be done while the pancake is cooking.
For the pancake, preheat your oven to 220°C and place your pan in the oven to heat while you prepare the batter. In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs with the caster sugar until light and frothy. Whisk in the milk, then add the flour, a dash of vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Continue to whisk until the batter is smooth and thin.

A new West Kerry senior management team has been appointed for 2025. In recent years West Kerry has not performed well in the county championship and there was a general feeling that the district should be doing better. In the modern era there is a lot of emphasis on club sides and club championships. As a consequence the district West Kerry side appears to have suffered and didn’t seem to attract the same interest from players as heretofore. Bearing that in mind there is huge credit due to those managers and selectors who put their hands up and took on the role in recent times and made the most of what was available to them, when it was difficult to get people.
Being selected for West Kerry was always seen as a badge of honour in the past and so it should continue to be. After all, you’re picking the best footballers from four different clubs, and it’s the highest standard a club player can aspire to to outside of inter county football. Without the successes of West Kerry in the 1980s, great players like Paudie Ó Sé and Tommy Doyle would never have been afforded the opportunity to captain Kerry teams to All Ireland victories.
In this context the West Kerry Board is making a special effort this year to revive the fortunes of West Kerry football. A very strong and experienced management team has been appointed and all necessary resources have been made available. All four clubs have been invited to submit a list of their best players and a panel will be selected from this list. Gabriel Ó Cathasaigh has taken on the role as Bainisteoir and Tomás Ó Flatharta will coach the side.

The organisation helps workers find and thrive in remote jobs while also advocating on behalf of this sector. Potential downsides of working remotely include isolation, without colleagues next to you to share the load. To combat this, Grow Remote creates regular opportunities for remote workers to socialise and connect with each other. Towns across Ireland have local chapters with volunteer leaders setting up social events to enable locals meet-up. Aodán Ó Conaill & Liz Ryan are the Dingle Chapter leads, which is one of Ireland’s largest with circa 120 members, growing steadily every month. Other parts of Kerry have chapters too - remote workers can attend any chapter’s events. The Dingle chapter tries to do something different each month, taking advantage of the brilliant resources here. 2025 highlights: beginners yoga, making St Bridget’s crosses at Púca café, cheering on the Six Nations Rugby in Paddy Bawn’s, Craic in Neligan’s with Irish set dancing, making pendants with Celtic Coastal Creations and a killer-pool evening in Dingle Bridge House! We love working with local organisations and businesses - especially newer and small ones & we welcome collaboration ideas, especially in the outdoor pursuits area. Also open to considering volunteer efforts locally.

Acceptance, one of the 9 attitudes of mindfulness is a tough one. We find it very hard to accept pain, injustice, defeat and really, most things that we don't like or don't want.
But the well known adage ‘God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference’ never gets old, because it strikes a chord with nearly everyone. We recognise some fundamental truth in it.
Suffering, in its various forms, is part of the human condition but nobody wants to suffer or see anyone else suffer. We will do whatever we can to avoid it, to resist it. Resistance is the opposite of acceptance and requires far more energy. Think of the physical strain and effort it takes to do resistance training, to push against or lift a heavy weight ; to withstand an opposing force.
Conversely, when you stop exerting yourself , there is a feeling of relief, ease and steadiness - a rebalancing of energy.
Equate this with the mental resistance we all tend to exert when unwelcome thoughts, feelings and emotions show up i.e. suffering - we tense up: the jaw , the shoulders, the chest contracts, the stomach knots, the heart pumps faster- all the many physiological responses to stress kick in. Then, there is the corresponding relaxation of tension: the ease and peace of letting go, letting all the worries dissipate by allowing and accepting what we cannot change.
There is huge energy expended in not wanting, denying, dreading, defying, wanting things to be different, or even clinging to our hard earned comforts : resisting change, fighting against all the challenges life presents. And as with physical exercise, a certain amount of mental stress is healthy but when it is ongoing, relentless, it can be exhausting and that sense of fighting off or pushing away is often the underlying cause of stress overload.
The tension builds up as we strive to manage all the things in life that we simply cannot control. Most of us will know to a greater or lesser extent that tight, unsettled, anxious feeling that stands between us and a peaceful mind/body. Life is unpredictable, things don't always go our way, nothing is certain and yet, we choose to believe in the illusion of control. We are like Sisyphus, pushing a boulder up a steep hill for eternity, refusing to accept that it will roll back down every time. An attitude of acceptance or non- resistance is a tool we can cultivate to help us live a more integrated, happier life. Our nature is to be born, get sick, get old and die. It seems stark, we generally don't like to dwell on it but it is our nature. No matter how hard we try we cannot change it. Life simply will not play by our rules- but we do get to choose how to play the cards we are dealt. We do get to choose how we value the life we have- all of it ,not just the perceived good bits!
By nurturing acceptance and equanimity, even though none of us know the outcome, we learn to let life live through us, with all its twists and turns we take good and bad as simply what happens in life.
Maintaining an open and receptive mind and not clinging to any outcome, desired or dreaded- we give life the space to flow, with all its unknowables and its possibilities too. That doesn't mean we don't care or become numb to what happens in our personal and collective lives. We give life our best effort, make the wisest choices we know how and then let go. We fight for the causes we truly believe in, work hard to develop our talents and make the best possible life for ourselves and everyone in it.
Acceptance does not mean putting up with less, passively accepting injustice in the hopes that one day it will turn out alright. Equanimity can actually give us the strength and courage we need to do the hard things as it helps us accept and deal with uncertainty, the possibility of failure and to mitigate the adrenaline-fuelled highs of success.
It does not mean relinquishing responsibility-we have to make judgement calls and decisions all the time, to the best of our ability and knowledge but the truth is we don't always know whether an event will ultimately prove to be ‘good’ or ‘bad’ so, a balanced perspective allows us to hold the full range of our experience more lightly and we are better able to take the bad times and the good allowing neither to knock us from a grounded centre.

The Narcotics Anonymous Message
An addict, any addict, can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use and find a new way to live.
Anyone who wants to stop using drugs may become a member of Narcotics Anonymous. Membership is not limited to addicts using any particular drug. Those who feel they may have a problem with drugs, legal or illegal, including alcohol, are welcome in NA. Recovery in NA focuses on the problem of addiction, not on any particular drug.
Our program of recovery begins with abstinence from all drugs, including alcohol. Sometimes people come to NA meetings while still using drugs, detoxing from drugs, or on drug replacement therapy. Regardless of what you may be taking when you first come to NA, you are welcome. NA’s primary approach to recovery is its belief in the therapeutic value of one addict helping another. Members take part in NA meetings by talking about their experiences and recovery from drug addiction. The NA programme is one of complete abstinence from all drugs, including alcohol.
Narcotics Anonymous is not a religious organization. It does teach basic spiritual principles such as honesty, open-mindedness, faith, willingness, and humility that may be applied in everyday life. Recovery in NA is a process, ongoing and personal. Members make an individual decision to join and recover at their own pace.
Our experience in NA is that those who keep coming to our meetings regularly stay clean.
