Many people enjoy most of their time outdoors in the summertime and that’s a good thing! Research has shown that spending time in nature is good for your mental and physical health. However, being in the elements brings additional safety/health challenges. Here are some tips to help you stay safe and healthy this summer:
• Stay hydrated - you guessed it - when it’s hotter out, your body needs more water to function at its best. don’t wait until you are thirsty to reach for your water.
• if you must exercise outside, plan to exercise in the morning or evening when it’s cooler out. Workout in the shade if possible.
• Wear lightweight, light colored and loose-fitting attire. it will help sweat evaporate and keep you cooler.
• if you are going to be in the sun, wear sunscreen, a wide brimmed hat, and clothing that covers the skin.
• use insect repellent and wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to prevent mosquito bites and ticks.
• Wear the recommended safety gear for each of your summer activities such as a bike helmet, knee, elbow and wrist guards, lifejacket, sup ankle tether strap, etc.
Going to have some fun on the water like swimming, boating, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking? here are some tips to staying safe on the water:
• never swim alone.
• When travelling by boat, create a trip plan: tell someone:
1. The names of everyone in the group.
2. Where you are going and when you are leaving.
3. When you expect to reach your destination and stops you plan to make along the way.
4. When you plan to return.
• Supervise children when around water. if you are not within arms reach of your children any time they are around water, you have gone too far.
• Always wear a lifejacket and carry the required marine safety equipment whenever you are on a boat. Ensure you check your lifejacket for proper fit – they aren’t one size fits all.
• enter water feet first - severe injuries can occur when jumping or diving headfirst into shallow water.
• Stay away from pool drains - hair, bathing suits and even limbs have become stuck or broken in faulty pool drains.
• Stay within designated swim areas
• never encourage anyone to swim in water deeper than their abilities will allow.
• drugs/Alcohol and water don’t mix: swim/boat smart and swim/boat sober. never drink alcohol when you’re supervising your children in the water – drowning is fast and silent, (not like in the movies) there’s no splashing and no screaming.
• Learn CpR so that you know what to do if you need to react and respond.
• Check the weather conditions before you go and be prepared for any weather and water conditions that may affect the safety of your trip.
• Be cautious when swimming in open waterswimmers or waders can be swept away in an instant if there are any currents, rapids, undertows or abrupt drop-offs present.
• Water shoes are a good idea to protect your feet from broken glass or other unknowns lurking at the bottom of the lake. They can also help you grip a slippery riverbank and prevent an unexpected fall.

Some of the criterion to apply for the Jumpstart program includes:
• Eligible children are between the ages of 4 and 18 years.
• Eligible children participating in sport and recreation in West Kelowna and Peachland.
• Funding goes to individuals, not to teams.
• Up to $600 per child can be allocated per year.
• Funding should be for a sustained program that lasts a season therefore a one-week camp would not qualify.
• Funding can be provided to the same child for successive seasons, although the goal is that Jump Start continues to fund new children.
• Funding preference is to pay for registration fees with consideration to fund equipment or transportation costs on a case by case basis.
• Applications are not retroactive and must be submitted before the start of the season.
Canadian tire Jumpstart has helped give more than 159,573 kids in financial need, the chance to play. Funding is based on the individual child’s financial need. The goal is to help those children who would not have been able to participate in a physical activity without the assistance of the Jumpstart program.
Research shows that participation in sport and recreation increases a child’s chance of success in life.

youth resilience programming/r2
Resilience is more than just an individual’s ability to cope—it also depends on access to supportive environments. The R2 Approach highlights 52 resilience factors, divided into rugged qualities (internal traits like confidence and attitude) and resources (external supports like healthcare or community). Both are essential: inner strength alone isn’t enough without supportive environments. This approach recognizes the shared responsibility of families, schools, and communities in fostering resilience. Our programs use the R2 Approach to help youth strengthen their internal skills and connect with the resources they need to thrive, especially during times of stress or adversity.
