LESS CLEANING.
MORE MEANING. “Several years ago, I realized that I was spending too much time alone in my house. I’ll admit that moving to Duncaster was a bit scary at first, but it didn’t take long to find my stride. Now I’m not only setting and achieving new goals—I have more time to do what I love most— volunteering to make a difference in the greater community.” – Susan Aller, Duncaster resident since 2015
“That’s why I
made my move to Duncaster.”
Maintenance-free living and LifeCare security—just two of the ways Duncaster makes aging easier and more fulfilling. Learn more at an upcoming LifeCare 101 webinar:

JEWISH HOLIDAYS Jewish holidays begin at sundown the evening before the date listed
CHANUKAH Chanukah — Hebrew for “dedication” — commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian Greek army, and the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. The miracle of Chanukah is that only one vial of oil was found with just enough oil to illuminate the Temple lamp for one day, and yet it lasted for eight full days, which we celebrate with the lighting of a chanukiah. 25 Kislev-2 Tevet November 28 – December 6, 2021 TU B’SHVAT Biblical in origin, this holiday has environmental and Zionistic themes that celebrate springtime renewal and growth. Traditions include eating fruit and planting trees. 15 Shevat January 17, 2022 PURIM A joyous celebration that commemorates the rescue of the Jews by Queen Esther of Persia and her uncle, Mordechai, from the evil Haman. The Book of Esther is read. Traditions include costume parties, mishloach manot (baskets filled with food), and eating hamentashen. Some also fast on the day before Purim to remember the fast by the Jews of Persia at Esther’s request. 14 Adar March 17, 2022
PASSOVER (PESACH) An eight-day holiday celebrating the liberation of the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt. At the seder, the Haggadah is read and symbolic foods are eaten. Jews refrain from eating leavened products to remember how the Israelites hadn’t the time to let their bread rise before fleeing. 15-22 Nisan April 16 – 23, 2022 (first seder, April 15) YOM HASHOAH HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY Day chosen by the Israeli Knesset to mourn the six million Jews killed during the Holocaust. Often commemorated with the reading of names of victim and testimonials by survivors. In Israel, the blast of a siren signals a collective minute of silence in memory of those lost. 27 Nisan April 28, 2022 YOM HAZIKARON ISRAEL MEMORIAL DAY A day to remember those who sacrificed their lives defending the State of Israel, as well as those killed in terrorist attacks. The sound of a siren brings the entire nation to a two-minute standstill during which all traffic and activities come to a halt. 4 Iyar May 4, 2022 YOM HA’ATZMAUT ISRAEL INDEPENDENCE DAY On May 14, 1948 Israel was declared an independent state. Jews the world over celebrate with parades and festivals. 5 Iyar May 5, 2022
10 | 2021 ALL THINGS JEWISH ®
LAG B’OMER The 33rd day of the Omer commemorates the break in the deaths of 24,000 students of Rabbi Akiva who were killed during the second century. 18 Iyar May 19, 2022 YOM YERUSHALAYIM (JERUSALEM DAY) A day that celebrates the reunification of Jerusalem during the 1967 Six Day War. 28 Iyar May 29, 2022 SHAVUOT Commemorates the giving of the Torah to the Israelites at Mount Sinai, as well as the spring harvest. The Book of Ruth is read. It is traditional to eat dairy products and fill one’s house with flowers. 6-7 Sivan June 5-6, 2022 FAST OF TAMMUZ Dawn-to-dusk fast that marks the start of a three-week mourning period (ending on Tisha B’Av) for the destruction of Jerusalem and the two Holy Temples, as well as several other tragic events in Jewish history that occurred on this date. It also marks the beginning of the siege of Jerusalem which culminated in the city’s destruction. 17 Tammuz July 17, 2022 TISHA B’AV Day of fasting and mourning commemorating the destruction of the First and Second Temples. The Book of Lamentations is read. 9 Av August 7, 2022 ROSH HASHANAH (THE JEWISH NEW YEAR) The Ten Days of Repentance begins on Rosh
Hashanah and culminates on Yom Kippur. 1-2 Tishrei September 26-27, 2022 YOM KIPPUR Holiest day of the Jewish year. Through fasting and prayer, Jews reflect upon their relationship with God and other people and atone for their sins. The fast ends with the blast of the shofar. 10 Tishrei October 5, 2022 SUKKOT Commemorates the fulfillment of God’s promise to bring the Israelites to the Promised Land after 40 years of wandering. Many build a sukkah, which resemble the huts constructed in the desert. Also celebrated with the blessing on the lulav and etrog. 15-21 Tishrei October 10-16, 2022 SHEMINI ATZERET Celebrated the day after Sukkot and thus sometimes considered an extension of the holiday. Marks the first time Tefillat Geshem (prayer for rain) is recited; a practice that continues until Pesach. 22 Tishrei October 17, 2022 SIMCHAT TORAH Celebrates the completion of the annual Torah reading cycle. After finishing the last sentence of the book of Devarim (Deuteronomy), congregants joyously parade the Torah around the synagogue seven times. The new cycle begins immediately with a reading from Beresheit (Genesis). 23 Tishrei October 18, 2022

Two years after Boston’s Hebrew College sold its distinctive building to pay off debt, the 100-year-old pluralistic institution announced that it will move to the Temple Reyim campus in the Boston suburb of Newtown, which is already home to Mayyim Hayyim Living Waters Community Mikveh and Education Center, and the Zamir Chorale of Boston.

In July, at B’nai Tikvoh-Sholom in Bloomfield, Governor Ned Lamont was joined by legislators and faith leaders, including Michael Bloom, executive director of the Jewish Federations Association of Connecticut and Rabbi Deborah Cantor (shown here), to announce the release of $3.8 million in security grants for houses of worship.
To better protect members of the Jewish communities who attend area synagogues, day schools, etc., the Jewish Federations in Southern and Western Connecticut announced a new partnership with the Secure Community Network (SCN) to launch a new regional security program, including the hiring of a regional security advisor. SCN is the official safety and security organization of the Jewish community in North America. With the announcement of the Community Security Initiative (CSI), Southern/Western CT joins the growing network of Federations and communities partnering with SCN to launch community-based security initiatives designed around an “All Threats, All Hazards” approach to preparedness, safety, security, and resiliency.

In August, the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford’s giving circles, JewGood Hartford for young professionals and the Lillian Fund for women, awarded $10,000 grants to two local nonprofits that help empower children, youth and families: COMPASS Youth Collaborative of Hartford received a grant to support COMPASS Junior Peacebuilders; and Klingberg Family Centers of New Britain received a grant to support Klingberg Children’s Advocacy Center.
In April 2020, Jewish Family Services of Greater Hartford launched a free and confidential emotional support hotline. JFS ONCALL is not a crisis line, nor is it a replacement for therapeutic telehealth appointments. Rather, JFS ONCALL is an outlet for community members to express their worries, be heard, and gain support — an essential service anytime, but especially during the stressful pandemic. “JFS is on the forefront of responding to persons impacted by this pandemic in many different ways and we are prepared to provide the requisite services as the needs increase,” said JFS President Pia Rosenberg Toro.

Joshua Solomon, owner of the Hartford Yard Goats baseball team and co-founder and president of The DSF Group, was named recipient of the 2021 Jewish National Fund-USA’s (JNF-USA) prestigious Tree of Life Award, in recognition of his outstanding community involvement and dedication to the cause of American-Israeli friendship.
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) announced that it will not host a policy conference in 2022, the second consecutive year it has made the decision citing ongoing COVID-19 pandemic concerns. Another concern was that activists may not be able to fully access congressional offices on the last day of the conference, when thousands of activists lobby in person. AIPAC opted not to run a conference online. Here, former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg speaks at AIPAC’s 2020 policy conference. (Saul Loeb/AFP via Getty Images)

The JCC was honored along with other members of the community for its positive impact during the COVID-19 pandemic. Said Executive Director David Jacobs. “The way our staff pivoted during this crisis is nothing short of inspiring.” The Mandell JCC closed its doors on March 13, 2020 and was running online the next day with a host of free programs.

About 15 community members walked through the streets north of the Green one Sunday afternoon, looking for traces of Jewish life in New Haven during the late 19th Century. Sponsored by Temple Emanuel of Greater New Haven, the tour was conducted by the Ethnic Heritage Center and the Jewish Historical Society of Greater New Haven.

National Council of Jewish Women closed its Greater Hartford section on May 20. “On behalf of the Board of Directors of the National Council of Jewish Women, Inc., we want to express our deep appreciation for all that the NCJW Greater Hartford Section has accomplished over the years,” wrote NCJW President Dana Gerson, and CEO Sheila Katz in a letter to members. “It is our hope that you will continue to collaborate with NCJW nationally in our change-making efforts to improve the lives of women, children, and families at the local, national, and global level.” The organization’s work, they added, “will live on through the three NCJW endowment and scholarship funds for students that will remain active through the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Hartford.”

They encouraged their classmates to plan their own trip or gap year in Israel and spoke passionately about the need to support the Jewish state. The survey also found that about half of respondents have felt the need to hide their Jewish identity on campus or in virtual campus settings. A slim majority also said they “are somewhat or very reluctant to share their views on Israel.” Commissioned by the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law, the survey was conducted before the spike in antisemitism surrounding the Israel-Gaza conflict . The Academic Engagement Network (AEN) announced the creation of a new video which charts the history of antisemitism, from its ancient origins to its contemporary manifestations. “Antisemitism in Our Midst,” was created as part of the Antisemitism Education Initiative at the University of California, Berkeley (pictured here, credit Sundry Photography/Shutterstock), which brings together campus stakeholders to discuss and develop the resources to respond to antisemitism. AEN is supporting the Antisemitism Education Initiative with a multi-year grant.

Campers at Ramah Sports Academy in Cheshire got more than Band-Aids and throat lozenges from the camp’s doctor, John Frank. They also heard stories from the nice Jewish boy about playing tight end with Joe Montana on two NFL Super Bowl San Francisco 49ers teams from 1984 to 1989. Dr. Frank, pictured here with his wife and kids, was also founder of the Israel bobsled team.

(JTA) — Now for some happy news. A Jewish couple in Florida is celebrating two hefty milestones together this year: 100 years of life, and 80 years of marriage. Lou and Edith Bluefeld, of Boca Raton, have known each other since they were 16. They ran a kosher catering business that served visiting U.S. presidents and helped to kosher the White House kitchen. They also cooked for former Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin when he was in Washington, D.C., for the 1978 Egypt peace accord announcement. Lou turned 100 on Saturday, Jn. 9, and Edith hits the number on Aug. 4. Their 80th wedding anniversary was Feb. 23. Their plan was to celebrate with their children and grandchildren later in the year if the family has all received the COVID-19 vaccine. No word on whether that celebration has taken place.

A Taste You Remember
It’s like a hug from your grandmother, but not smothering and never makes you feel guilty.
(JTA) — FOR JEWISH FANS OF AMERICAN GIRL DOLLS, CHANUKAH CAME EARLY THIS YEAR. In September, the popular doll company released a new set of holiday doll outfits and accessories to diversify its holiday outfits. Kids can now dress up their dolls in special outfits for Eid Al-Fitr, Diwali, the Lunar New Year, Kwanzaa and Chanukah. The new holiday outfits come with a booklet explaining the significance of each of the holidays. The Chanukah outfit includes a sparkly blue dress, silver shoes, a head band, and a Star of David necklace. In addition to the clothing, priced at $36, fans of the dolls can also purchase a Chanukah gift set that includes a menorah, Star of David bracelet, dreidel and Chanukah gelt. American Girl is known for its lifelike dolls with backstories — and a series of short novels and movies about them — spanning the globe and set throughout history. The company released its first Jewish doll named Rebecca Rubin, whose story was set on the Lower East Side in early 20th century, in 2009. While that doll was recently retired, her own Chanukah set is still available, along with a Shabbat set that includes a teapot, pastries and a braided challah.

ARCHAEOLOGISTS FIND EVIDENCE MEDIEVAL BRITISH JEWS KEPT KOSHER Archaeologists have discovered the first evidence that Jews living in England in the 12th and 13th centuries observed Jewish dietary laws, reported The Jewish Chronicle in March. The findings revealed are from a 2016 project on the site of demolished shops that overlapped Oxford’s old Jewish quarter. A team of archeologists was digging at a centuries-old outhouse when they made the discovery. Julie Dunne, a biomolecular archaeologist at Bristol University who worked on the project, said that 171 animal bones were found at the site—136 were from poultry, and there were no bones from non-kosher food, such as pigs or shellfish. More than 2,000 fragments of ceramic cooking vessels were also discovered. Using organic residue analysis, archeologists identified the kinds of fats that were absorbed into the pottery and sealed in it through constant use. There were no traces of non-kosher fats in the pottery, and no evidence of meat and milk being used in the same vessels. The opportunity to search the excavation site almost did not happen because commercial developers were nearly complete in gaining planning permission to build over the area. After intervention by historians from the Oxford Jewish Heritage Committee, development of the site was put on pause for four months so that archaeologists could excavate the area.
