District Engineer Sanny Boy Oropel said the road widening in Brgy. Lumbo, Pototan and the reconstruction in Brgy. Tumcon and Guinacas, all in Pototan town and Brgy. Cabalabaguan in Mina were completed in December 2019. The P26-million road widening from two lanes to four lanes involved the construction of additional 2-lane, 6.7-meter wide, 0.3-meter thick Portland Concrete Cement Pavement (PCCP) with the length of 1.015 kilometers including reinforced lined canal, cross drainage with catch basin and headwall, grouted riprap and stone masonry as slope protection, metal guardrails with end piece, and reflectorized pavement markings. “This widened road will provide easy access to basic services from Iloilo City to central and northern Iloilo, and reduce travel time from Pototan to Iloilo City of hundreds of motorists and commuters from 45 minutes to 30 minutes, hence, delivery of goods, services and commodities would be faster by at least 15 minutes. This will eventually improve the living condition and diminish the transport cost of the people in the said

towns,” Oropel said. “The better and wider road will also open opportunities for socioeconomic development in these towns as well as may reduce the percentage of road hazards,” he added. Likewise, the road improvement in the barangays of Tumcon and Guinacas in Pototan and Brgy. Cabalabaguan in Mina involved reconstruction of the deteriorated concrete road with the length of 1.434 kilometers in the amount of P22.9

million, provision of guardrails with end piece, and reflectorized pavement markings. “The reconstruction of this road section provides a convenient and safe travel to approximately 280 motorists and commuters who travel daily toward establishments, recreational areas, health centers and schools. This will also improve and facilitate the flow of goods from the province of Capiz to Iloilo City and vice versa,” he said.

EDITORIAL STAFF: IMEE GRACE B. TANTIADO Editor-in-Chief The month of March is declared as “Fire Prevention Month” or “Burn Prevention Month” as issued by Proclamation No. 115-A and Proclamation No. 360 in 1986. The initiative promotes "safety consciousness among our people every day of the year as a positive preventive approach to a problem that can be solved by more caution, vigilance, sobriety, exercise of common sense and respect for the law”. The theme for the year 2020 is “Matuto Ka, Sunog Iwasan Na” which emphasizes the need for people to be educated on the importance of fire safety. With March being the hottest month of the year and start of the dry season, fires can become more frequent. It’s important to stay alert and stay informed. To keep you and your family safe from fire, here are some tips from the Bureau of Fire Protection: 1. Prepare a fire emergency and escape plan at home and familiarize yourselves with escape routes. At the same time, try to educate yourself and your family regarding fire hazards and fire safety measures. 2. Unplug electrical equipment when not in use and conduct regular check-ups of equipment to avoid overloading. 3. Refrain from overloading electrical sockets designed to accommodate only one or two plugs by plugging several chords into the sockets. 4. Always secure loose cables and wires and replace old ones regularly. 5. When using cooking gas, always check for gas leaks. 6. Follow and enforce a “No Smoking” policy. 7. Practice proper housekeeping by keeping the flammables away from the reach of children. Likewise, store flammable materials away from materials that easily catch on fire. 8. If ever you find yourself in an emergency, get out and call for help; call 911 and inform the operator of your situation right .
