Heap on the talent for 2015 Every time I write a tourism story for The Western Producer, I am amazed by the events our province hosts that I didn’t even know about. It stands true with this story about music festivals. You can almost fill up each weekend from mid-June to Mid-August with music from every genre – whether it’s folk and jazz, to country and rock, and everything in between. Most festivals are family-friendly, with children’s activities that include parades, special crafts, kite festivals and cultural experiences that will teach them about the wonderful people groups in Saskatchewan. While this list is by no means complete (I’ve left out some of the more well-known events like the Craven Jamboree and the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival in Saskatoon) it’s a great resource to get your fill of music that will keep your toes tapping and your heart singing! | By CHERYL KRETT

une 17-21 JazzFest Regina: Now in its seventh year, JazzFest Regina is four days of jazz concerts sure to thrill all ages. For 2015, there are over 30 free stage performances in various locations around Regina during the day, with over 100 musicians from across Canada. Organizers also expect to have 15-20 restaurants and clubs in the city hosting world-class music from the festival’s main headliners - most of these events will be free to the public. There will also be special ticketed evening concerts: the Piano Series (Wednesday); the Heavyweights Brass Band (Thursday); the Christine Jensen Big Band on Friday (this will include three local musicians: Donny Kennedy, Steve Caldestad and Dave Mossing, who are now playing on the world stage); Little Miss Higgins (Sat-

urday) and a special Jazz Program on Sunday in honour of Father’s Day. Organizers are looking at doing a Friday night satellite concert series at Regina Beach.

June 18-21 Long Day’s Night Music Festival: For four days in June, the city of Swift Current is transformed into Festival Central, with national performers bringing their best music to the stage – from folk ballads and Celtic beats to soulful blues and jammin’ rock. Several large tents are set up, with most of the concerts being held in a big top tent at Windscape Field, located in the very southwest corner of Swift Current. The music starts at 8:30 p.m., with two bands each night. During the day, you can feast on the beautiful colours of the kites at the SaskPower Windscape

Every year, the kite festival, held on the “windiest hill in Swift Current,” attracts over 40 national and international kite performing/kite making stars from Thailand, Germany, France, England, Belgium, the United States and Canada. June 19-20: Country at the Creek: This event, celebrating its fourth year, hosts main stage performers and beer gardens talent who play late into the evening both nights.

The popular Ness Creek Site, 20 kilometres northeast of Big River, is where the fun takes place. It is chock full of high-energy country music performers from Saskatchewan and across Canada, including the opening act – Big River’s Tilly and The Billygoats – as well as Thirty Aught Six from Spiritwood, Trick Ryder, Stephanie Lloyd and The Big River Boys. A unique part of this festival is the Star Search, where two winners are chosen from a group of non-recording artists who then open for the headlining act (TBA) on June 20.

June 19-21 Eagle Creek Jamboree: If you have yet to experience Eagle Creek Regional Park, 24 kilometres northwest of Asquith off Highway 376, now’s your chance. You won’t be disappointed as you’ll be treated to coun-

try and rock acts on the Friday and Saturday, and country and folk acts on the Sunday.

More details: www.eaglecreekjamboree.com July 3-5 Carlton Trail Jamboree: Hosted on a site 2.5 kilometres south of Rabbit Lake, this festival’s claim to fame is its lineup of Canada’s finest country music stars as well as up-and-coming talent (what other event can claim they’ve had nearly every Canadian country singer perform on their outdoor stage in their 27 year history?). This year’s lineup includes Big River Boys, Coffee or Scotch, Idyll Wild, The Stampeders, Lisa Lambert and Trail Dust, to name a few. Organizers are excited to announce they will be hosting three Saskatchewan artists who are releasing their first singles – Brody Siebart, Darlene Tuleta and Cody Prevost. Along with the great music, there is free children’s entertainment Saturday and Sunday, concessions, beer gardens, free camping with each paid admission, and a free pancake breakfast each morning. July 3-5 All Folk’d Up Music Festival: The idea for this festival began in 2007, when six women went on an amazing road trip to the Winnipeg Folk Festival and wondered if such an event could be transported to Saskatchewan. The dream came true in 2010, when

the first festival was held at Kemoca Regional Park, adjacent to the town of Montmartre.

Now going into its sixth year, the festival mixes a variety of music genres to satisfy its ever-growing audiences – at least five different genres each year. Organizers are promoting this as a family festival open to all ages, with a strong children’s program offering crafts, face painting, a petting zoo and children performers. Dead South is confirmed for 2015. More details: www.allfolkedup.net July 16-19 - Ness Creek Music Festival: The outdoor festival takes place about 20 kilometres northeast of Big River. While not all the details have been confirmed, organizers are guaranteeing a main stage lineup that will feature indie artist from Saskatchewan, Canada and around the globe. Confirmed are Buck 65 from Nova Scotia, The Slocan Ramblers (Canada’s young bluegrass band to watch), Bombolesse (an explosive tropical fiesta of music!), The Moondoggies, Bocephus King and Los Texmaniacs. The festival, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015, has evolved into more than just great concerts – there is plenty for all ages to enjoy during the family-friendly event: an artisan’s market with hand-made arts and crafts, and children’s area offering songwriting workshops, crafts, face painting, nature walks, circus arts

and a Sunday parade. You can also learn more about First Nations and Metis arts, music and songwriting. There’s even drum and dance circles, sharing circles and daily tours through a forest garden. Camping is included with a weekend pass. More details: http://nesscreek. com.

July 24-25 Gateway Festival: This is the 11th year for this annual music festival in Bengough. It is promoted as a “high energy family-friendly celebration of music and culture with something for everyone.” Three stages pump out incredible music ranging from country, folk, rock, blues, alternative and more.... plus there are children’s activities, multicultural groups, art/craft vendors, food vendors and beer gardens. August 7-9: Dog Patch Music Festival: In Whelan, 18 kilometres west of Loon Lake on Grid 699, space has been carved out for what many would call a festival reminiscent of Woodstock - without the drug culture component, of course. One hundred per cent family oriented, the festival is going into its second year and promises you’ll not only come away with great memories of the music (leaning toward the bluegrass, country and blues genres), but a better understanding of Saskatchewan and its multicultural signifi-

cance. Some of the performers secured for 2015 include Dead South from Regina, Lorrie Church, Theresa Sokyrka, Donna Kay, and David James and Big River (a Johnny Cash tribute show). Adding to the positive, familyfriendly experiences are the pow-wow dancers, outdoor volleyball, children’s activities, food vendors, marketplace and onsite camping free with admission. August 13-16 John Arcand Fiddle Fest: At Fiddle Fest, not only will you listen to some of the best fiddlers in Canada and parts of the United States, you’ll also get a chance to learn from them in special workshops and maybe even take a turn on the dance floor to learn some new steps! All of this takes place at Windy Acres, seven kilometres southwest of Saskatoon on Pike Lake Hwy 60. This four day, family-friendly festival, now in its 18th year, is also a chance for fiddlers to compete and take home a prize. Rounding out the fun is a children’s area with interactive activities, cultural camp with Metis crafts and traditions, and pancake breakfast Saturday morning. Evening concerts are held from Thursday to Saturday, and an old time dance follows the Friday and Saturday performances. More details: www.johnarcandfiddlefest.com.

August 14-16 Northern Lights Bluegrass and Old Tyme Music Festival: As the name suggests, this festival focuses on bluegrass and old time music. The education component is a big part of the festival, where people of all ages and skill levels can receive instruction from the mainstage acts one week prior to the festival. The Ness Creek Festival site, 20 kilometres northeast of Big River, provides the perfect setting for this event, which also includes jamming sessions, family-focused activities, and opportunities to share bluegrass and old tyme music and dance with a new generation. he Saskatoon Farmer’s Market at River Landing is bustling every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, full of farm-fresh foods, flowers and home-made products. Many summer weekends face painters, buskers and other entertainers gather crowds in the outdoor market square. Grab a coffee and people-watch or chat with the friendly local vendors as you sample their wares.

If dining out is what you’re after, Saskatoon has many options to fit even the most particular palates. A staple for years on the city’s west side is The Park Café, a family-friendly favourite. Get there early, since their breakfast menu usually draws line-ups out the door.

Open from April to December, The Berry Barn offers home-style cooking in a serene setting surrounded by orchards and overlooking the beautiful South Saskatchewan River. Nearby, The Strawberry Ranch has U-pick berries, a popular place in the summer and fall to spend some time with kids. Be forewarned, it’s tempting to eat the delicious strawberries and Saskatoon berries as fast as you can pick them.

For those wanting to experience one of Saskatoon’s most popular new fine dining restaurants, head for dinner and drinks to Ayden Kitchen & Bar. Canada’s Top Chef winner in 2011, Dale MacKay returned to his hometown of Saskatoon after training with

some of the most renowned chefs, to bring mouth-watering homegrown and locally inspired dishes to his latest food establishment.

Saskatoon has welcomed MacKay and what has been called a ‘culinary dream team’ to the local growing restaurant scene.

A stroll along the Meewasin Valley’s 64 km of parkland trails, gives the feel that you are on the edge of nature, while still in the city.

Visit their Interpretive Centre to learn about the history of Saskatoon and all about the river valley and trails.

Outdoor enthusiasts and those wanting to learn even more about the area’s history, can visit Wanuskewin Heritage Park, a look at a Continued on page 10

natural prairie landscape with an opportunity to be a part of the longest running active archeological dig site in Canada and learn the stories of the Northern Plains Indians who gathered at this scenic meeting place for more than 6000 years. Try some traditional bannock or bison dishes and shop for traditional items like moccasins and pottery, made by local First Nations artisans.

To find out more about our local history, a visit to the Western Development Museum is a unique opportunity to stroll through Boomtown, a replica of a 1910 western Canadian town - complete with turn-of-the-century shops and interactive experiences.

Not only are there trains large and miniature at the WDM to capture the imagina-

tion, but there will be a replica of a CP train with locomotive and caboose at the Kinsmen Park Playland. The highly anticipated re-opening in summer 2015 of the first phase of Kinsmen Park will feature a ferris wheel, carousel, children’s play area with water features, in addition to the new train.

For ten days this summer, from June 25 to July 5, Saskatoon will burst into song during the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. More than 85,000 music fans groove and sing along to jazz, blues, funk, pop and world music by world class artists. This is the second largest festival of its kind in Western Canada, and definitely one of the most highly anticipated events in Saskatoon each year.

From June 26 to July 5, don’t miss watching the ISF World Men’s Softball Cham-

pionship, when the best softball teams in the world will meet in Saskatoon to compete in action-packed games.

Celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Canada Remembers our Heroes air show on July 11th and 12th. This nationallyawarded event features the world famous Snowbirds-431, RCAF CF-18 Hornet Demo Team, the SkyHawks Parachute Team, and a whole lot more action both on the air and on the ground.

The annual Fringe Festival has been a highly anticipated summer festival in Saskatoon since 1989. From July 30th to August 8th, the streets of Broadway come alive with independent performers from around the world. Vendors, buskers and actors delight audiences of all ages for this week-long event.

One of the newest festivals to Saskatoon is the YXE Street Food Festival, this year on September 19th, when music and food trucks hit the streets for one high-energy, tasty day. Bring your appetite.

Another new addition to the local entertainment scene is a fabulous night-time arts festival. Nuit Blanche takes place this fall on September 26 in the heart of Riversdale. This free event celebrates the vibrant arts and culture community in Saskatoon.

Like so many great discoveries, Moose Jaw’s geothermic mineral water was found by accident. It was located during a natural gas exploration more than a century ago, and the original well was eventually sealed. he geothermal water is said to relax muscles, hydrate the skin and ease joint pain. A tunnel connects the outdoor and indoor pools, where various depths and temperatures can be found. The make-up of the water is much like the famous mineral pools of Bath, England with epsom salts, magnesium, silicon, potassium and many other compounds.

Ask about mineral pool yoga, gentle and beginner yoga classes that incorporate movements both in the water and on deck. The Sun Tree Spa offers a full range of treatments geared towards renewal and healing. Spa treatments include scrubs, massages, facials, body wraps and packages. Hotel guests can explore the adjoining Casino Moose Jaw or the many shops, museums and restaurants within walking distance. The popular Tunnels of Moose Jaw are also nearby.

The European-style spa of Manitou Springs Resort and Mineral Spa boasts waters with salt concentrations five times more than the ocean. The rich and highly buoyant saline waters beckon many visitors to central Saskatchewan each year. Affectionately known as Canada’s “Little Dead Sea,” the lake was formed when the glaciers retreated after the last ice age. First Nations people believed in the healing powers of this water, and named the lake Manitou after the great spirit. The earliest story is of Assiniboine people drinking and bathing in the water and later recovering from smallpox.

ounge in the soothing waters of The Manitou Springs Resort and Mineral Spa. Affectionately called ‘Canada’s Dead Sea,’ these mineral-rich waters are used in the European-style spa where three temperature sections offering a soothing soak. Services include a range of therapeutic treatments and esthetic services, a fitness centre, restaurant and lounge and a poolside cafe. The spa has been a finalist for Tourism Saskatchewan’s Business of the Year award, the Canadian Tourism Awards and ranked fourth in Canada in the Spas of America’s top spa poll.

The story goes that as soon as the music starts at the Danceland Ballroom, the floor is full. Dancers have floated across the famous horse-hair sprung floor since the booming 1920s. Today the beautiful old building is host to all manner of gatherings. Check the schedule for weekend dances, square and pattern dance evenings, dinner theatres and more.

Check out the 1930s fieldstone chalet at the Manitou Lake and District Regional Park. There are more than 200 campsites and a nature trail leading to Welling Park Manitou Beach. The Manitou Beach Golf Club has a full slate of tournaments during the summer. This well-treed course offers challenges of bunkers and water hazards and a beautiful view.

The nearby Last Mountain Lake Wildlife Area has long been recognized as an important place for wildlife, and was first protected as a breeding ground for wild foul in 1887.

It is a prime spot on the central flyway of North America, with spectacular amounts of migrating geese, ducks and cranes passing by each year. With more than 280 recorded species, this is truly bird-watchers paradise.

Although they don’t make quite the hubbub that thousands of geese do, many breeds of songbirds and birds of prey also stop here along their journey each year. Shorebirds, songbirds and more than a dozen species of ducks nest in the area, with the Western Grebe, the Wilson’s Pharlorpe and the American Avocet among them.

Remarkable places to discover Legend has it that the highly saline waters of Little Manitou Lake have healing properties.

With three sandy beaches in the area this is a great place to beat the heat. The beaches all have showers, washroom facilities and playgrounds. | By JESSE GREEN

Put Lloydminster on the itinerary this summer and you’ll discover arts, culture, lively events and a huge selection of recreation including some great golf courses. The fastest horses and best drivers are in town each summer for the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association circuit finals. Other highlights on the summer calendar are the Colonial Days Exhibition and Art Without Borders, a wonderful festival that celebrates literary, visual, media and performing arts.

Founded in 1903, this was North America’s largest single colony.

Today, the story of Canada’s only border city is told at the Lloydminster Culture and Science Centre. The public art gallery features collections by Count Berthold Von Imhoff, while the interactive Heavy Oil Science Centre leads visitors through geology, drilling and refining. One of North America’s largest taxidermy displays is here; the lifetime work of Nicholas Fuchs is an impressive display.

The sprawling Bud Miller All Season’s Park is home to the world’s largest working sun dial, as well as countless ways to spend the day. Walking paths, tennis, lawn bowling, fishing, playground, volleyball, miniature golf, disc golf and a new splash park... phew!

If you still have the energy, there are outdoor picnic areas with fire-

wood provided.

A mainstay in the Lloydminster arts community is the Root Community Emporium. Local food and art are featured and events include live music, documentary movie nights, salsa dancing and more. Catch a show at the Vic Juba Community Theatre, or keep it in mind for your next big function.

Just outside the city is the Sandy Beach Regional Park with a 9-hole sand greens golf course and camping. While away a hot summer day on the beach, or hit the water with your boat.

The 800km shoreline of Lake Diefenbaker beckons. Sailing, boating, swimming and fishing are all well enjoyed on this massive central Saskatchewan lake. Anglers may snag any number of game fish, like walleye, rainbow trout, burbot, goldeye and many others.

Water flows through the dams at either end, and this deep lake is clean and clear.

Marinas include the Lakeside Marina in Elbow, Anchor Marine in the Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park and Rustys Coulee in Palliser Regional Park. There are also a number of boat launches.

Campers are spoiled for choice with more than a thousand sites in the area. Tenters and RV campers alike can find a great spot to enjoy. There are three provincial parks and four regional parks in

the area. Visitor centres, Trans-Canada Trail, cafes, large wooded campgrounds, hiking trails and interpretive programs await.

Our turn of the century pioneers were hardy people. Among the toughest may have been the Russian Doukhobors. At the Blaine Lake Doukhobor Dugout House, learn of the survival and struggles of these early settlers from costumed guides. Near the reconstructed dugout house visitors can hear the traditional acappella singing and visit the Doukhobor Prayer Home. A highlight at this National Historic Site is the freshly-baked Doukhobor bread.

To the east is another notable settlement, the Doukhobor Heritage Village at Veregin. This 13-building village has early homes, a brick oven, bathhouse, prayer home, barns and a blacksmith shop.

Thousands of artifacts line the museum, and the Prayer Home is a provincial Heritage Building.

Yorkton is one of Saskatchewan’s largest cities and has a great deal to offer the summer traveller. The annual Yorkton Exhibition fair in July is a thrill with chuckwagon and chariot races, entertainment at the grandstand and that great fair food.

The rolling terrain of the Deer Park Golf Course offers a picturesque setting for a top-ranked golf course. Water, sand and multiple tees make for a challenging round of golf. Just southeast of town is the Cherrydale Golf and Campground, where the pro shop is in a historic farmhouse and the wandering creek and rolling hills make for a spirited round of golf. Explore nature trails at the campground, play some volleyball, horse shoes or relax around the fire pit.

See the work of contemporary artists, both local and national, at the Godfrey Dean Art Gallery. The Sunflower Arts and Crafts Show and Sale has attracted quite a following, and each September thousands of people visit the show for its quality arts and crafts.

Tour the city’s beautiful yards and gardens on Yorkton’s Historical Walking Tour. The leisurely stroll allows visitors to get a sense of early years and takes in both private and public buildings. Brochures are available from Tourism Yorkton and City Hall.

The Western Development Museum’s Threshermen’s Show and

Seniors’ Festival each August features horse-drawn wagons, steam tractors and stooking and threshing crews. Be sure to get a slice of the fresh bread, cooked in the outdoor clay oven. Celebrate history with the old-fashioned picnic complete with period games.

Experience the splendor of the Painted Hand Casino Pow Wow in June, with hundreds of dancers from Canada and the United States.

Brush up on sporting heritage at the Yorkton Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

The Gallager Centre water park is a top attraction on the prairies. Ride the thrilling two-story waterslide, challenge yourself on the climbing wall, surf the wave pool or relax in the lazy river and sauna. Enjoy a self-guided nature walk through the Ravine Ecological Preserve, starting from the Gallagher Centre. The preserve is open all year, and guided tours are available on request.

Legendary healing waters, sprawling sandy beaches, the excitement of a summer fair and top notch recreation await. Whether you are after a relaxing day on the beach, an adventure on the water or a stroll through a gallery, you are sure to find the vacation you are looking for in central Saskatchewan. 

The Northern Gateway Museum is one of Saskatchewan’s oldest museums. See the lost art of birch bark biting by Angelique Merasty, mining artifacts, First Nations beadwork and fur trading artifacts.

History of law and order speaks at the Royal Northwest Mounted Police Post Museum in Creighton. Rough cut lumber floor boards and hand-hewn log walls house artifacts and historic photographs. Take home an original print from the Lakefront Gallery at Denare Beach, open during the summer.

Just south of Denare Beach is the “recent” geological marvel of the Limestone Crevices. Formed about 10,000 years ago and surrounded by billionyear old precambrian rocks, this formation is found on Highway 167. Visitors to the Pre-Cambrian Wild Rice Plant at Denare Beach learn about wild rice, history, processing and more. Explore the natural beauty of this area on one of Canoe Saskatchewan’s documented routes. Route 14, 41 and 44 all take in the Amisk Lake and Denare Beach areas, and range in length from two to seven days.

Saskatchewan has some of the best fresh-water fishing in the world. The Amisk Lake (Beaver Lake) area is packed with beautiful, clean lakes and walleye, northern pike, perch, lake trout, whitefish and stocked rainbow trout are the catch of the day.

Amisk Lake has hundreds of islands and depth ranging from shallows to 40 metres, with abundant walleye, northern pike, perch and whitefish.

The horse-shoe shaped Deschambault Lake has a vast 3,200km of shoreline and five spawning rivers.

Well-treed Hanson Lake offers sheltered fishing and, like Deschambault, has northern pike, walleye, whitefish and perch.

Northern pike and walleye are found in at Jan and Mirond Lakes, both of which have many sheltered bays. Fish for stocked rainbow trout at McRobbie, Nistum and Mid Lakes, or tackle the picturesque and deep Mosher Lake for northern pike, walleye and perch. It is almost impossible to list every lake and river, but the fish are plentiful, the water is clean and this ageless pastime is enjoyed by many.

and more. Visitors may tour the studios, visit the artists and in some cases watch them at work. Guest artists are also featured. Also held in August is the Northern Horizons Journey of Creativity. This driving tour winds through the rolling parkland on a scenic tour of the lakes, forests and agricultural areas near Medstead. This tour showcases the workshops and studios of a diverse group of artists and craftspeople.

The Meadow Lake Provincial Park is a true gem of the north. While the fishing, water recreation and golf are fabulous, it’s the hiking that truly sets this park apart. Hiking ranges from one hour family-friendly hikes to the grand Boreal Trail. Spanning 120km, the trail can be tackled in multi-day backcountry trips or smaller treks. Hikers who plan to spend the night in backcountry campsites should register with the administration office.

Try the high-tech treasure hunt of geocaching and experience a fun family adventure. The caches are registered at geocaching.com, and should all be a waterproof container with a log book to sign and record comments. Some provincial parks have units available to borrow.

Keep your eyes peeled for beaver, moose, squirrels, wolves, songbirds and so many more species of wildlife. Maps are available at the park gate. Go for 45-Love at the park’s two tennis court or try out Dutch Treat Mini Golf. Enjoy the smooth fairways and grass green of the Loon Lake Golf and Country Club. The Waterhen River winds through the 100km expanse of boreal forest, dotted with dozens of sparkling lakes. It’s easy to see why this is a Saskatchewan favourite.

ing. With single and double track biking through parkland and boreal forest, the trail system through the Meadow Lake Provincial Park has a variety of riding from novice to expert. Rock outcrops through the forest bed offer some challenging climbs, and all trails are clearly marked.

At the St. Cyr Hills riders can choose routes ranging from one to 30kms in length, with trails of hard-packed soil running alongside three of the area lakes. There are many challenging sections for the technical rider, but the great variety of trails means it’s easy to change to a less demanding route.

Another great spot for mountain biking is the Candle Lake Provincial Park, where natural sand dunes and nordic ski paths offer trails varying from single track weaving through the forest to more technical fire roads where tricky climbing sections await.

Candle Lake’s Minowukaw, Wasketeena and Sandy Bay are rated among Canada’s top inland beaches. Check out the miles of sandy beaches, hike the sand dunes or launch your boat for a day of fun on the water. Check the bulletin boards for special events and interpretive programs throughout the summer months. Musker Pond is stocked with trout with its hard-pack walkways offers an ideal, sheltered spot for fishing. Fisher Creek connects Candle and Torch Lakes and is a popular spot for angling. The Fisher Creek Store offers canoe rentals.

he northern edge of the grain belt in eastern Saskatchewan gives way to the boreal forest of Narrow Hills Provincial Park.

It is an exceptional place to experience the powerful effects of 10,000-year-old glaciers, when great ice sheets scoured the land and formed long ridges such as eskers and push moraines. The best way to get in touch with this landscape is to follow an impressive scenic drive and take one of the most delightful short hiking trails anywhere.

The Narrow Hills Scenic Drive begins near the park’s core area at Lower Fishing Lake. Interpretive panels along the way relate stories about the geology and history of the hills.

The road starts out fairly smoothly as it steadily climbs the push moraine ridge but soon becomes a narrow, one-lane track that is deeply rutted in places. It could be challenging in spots if your vehicle has low clearance or you’re visiting after a heavy rain.

We wind through thick forest much of the way, but higher onto the ridge, vistas open up over seemingly endless tracts of forested lake lands. A highlight is the view over the Grace Lakes, with its gracefully curving shorelines.

The officially designated scenic drive ends here, although the road continues down the hills to the south. However, the park doesn’t recommend going any farther because the trail becomes extremely rough and is often not passable in wet conditions. Before modern roads, this track along the ridges was the main access to the hills and lakes.

The best hiking is in the northwest part of the park. To get there, continue north on Highway 106, west on Highway 913 and then follow the signs to the Gem Lakes.

Lakes are scattered throughout northern Saskatchewan, but these jewels of the forest stand in a class by themselves. Rare formations called tunnel valleys formed here as glaciers retreated. Melt water carved valleys as it flowed beneath the ice. Huge blocks of ice settled in the sandy base, eventually becoming lakes when they melted. The five lakes are small but deep. While practically next to each other, they aren’t connected.

The lakes seem to shimmer like gemstones because of their sandy bottoms and amazingly clear deep water. Colours are accentuated by reflections of the blue sky and surrounding vegetation. It’s easy to see why the lakes were named Jade, Opal, Pearl, Diamond and Sapphire.

Follow the 5.5 kilometre network of hiking trails to visit all the lakes.

One of the best viewpoints is only a few minutes from the trailhead where a high ridge looks over Jade Lake. The shallow edge of Opal Lake has an iridescent tinge that really is reminiscent of opals.

Another of our favourite spots is Pearl Lake where, if you happen to hit conditions just right, the water appears an almost unreal deep greenish-blue.

Walk-in backcountry campsites are located at Diamond Lake and Opal Lake in case you want to linger longer in this special spot. The lakes are stocked with trout, so freshly-caught fish might be another bonus.

We especially like visiting the Narrow Hills in autumn, when fall colours are at their prime and campgrounds are almost empty. The main campground is at Lower Fishing Lake, with smaller camps at Zeden, Ispuchaw, and Baldy lakes. Our top choice is Baldy, where only six spacious sites line the water’s edge. During our most recent trip in late September, we had the entire campground to ourselves.

A destination for every imagination Don’t let his cute name fool you - Scotty is the world’s biggest and most complete skeleton of the fearsome T.rex. When a large verebra was discovered near the town of Eastend in 1991 it opened the door for the thrilling discovery and excellence in scientific research and education. | By JESSE green

ee a full-size skeleton replica of Scotty and learn about the meat-eaters, horned and duck-billed dinosaurs who once roamed the land. The T.rex Discovery Centre is carved into the magnificent Frenchman River Valley and has guided tours, screenings of the film ‘Dinosaur Hunters’ in the Canada Discovery Theatre as well as public programs. Kids can excavate their own fossils, paint a T.rex tooth or make dinosaur slime. You can’t go wrong with kids and slime! Group visits can be arranged, and there is a gift shop on site.

Set on the Red Coat Trail, Eastend boasts a wealth of arts and heritage with a North West Mounted Police post, Crazy Horses’ 1876 encampment and breathtaking views.

You are in cowboy country at the Wood Mountain Historic Regional Park. The Wood Mountain Sports and Stampede is a Canadian Cowboy’s Association sanctioned event, and is Canada’s oldest continuous rodeo. (Yes, even older than the Calgary Stampede.) It features the popular Little Britches rodeo, team roping jackpot, rodeo performances and a dance with live music.

Nearby Rockglen is a natural headquarters for exploring the South Country Recreation Area. Coronach’s Outlaw Days, the Big Muddy Badlands, St. Victory Petryglyphs and the Willow Bunch Museum are all within an hour’s drive. The Grasslands National Park preserves a rare tract of untouched mixed grasslands and offer a home to the endangered black-footed ferret and colonies of prairie dogs.

and Saskatchewan’s first stone masonry construction. In a time when the round barn has all but vanished from the prairie landscape, this exceptional building stands as a reminder of innovation and heritage. It has been reconstructed just north of its original 1882 site, and houses the interpretive

centre as well as old time dances, a Saturday afternoon horse fair and other special events.

Visit the Grand Theatre 1904 in Indian Head. This community owned and operated theatre shows movies and live performances from the beautifully-restored heritage building on Main Street. Indian Head also has a lovely 9-hole grass greens golf course set amid mature spruce, an outdoor swimming pool, splash park and plenty of trails and parks to explore. Just a 20-minute drive away is the Katepwa Provincial Park in the scenic Qu’Appelle Valley. Katepwa is one of a string of lakes known as the Fishing Lakes. Echo, Mission and Pasqua Lakes all offer wonderful summer recreation like swimming, fishing and boating.

Just up the way from the Qu’Appelle Valley is the Motherwell Homestead, which recently celebrated 130 years. A dedicated group called the Friends of the Motherwell ensure that this piece of prairie history remains open to the public, with displays and special events throughout the summer.

The Long Creek Golf and Country Club is a challenging 18-hole course set in the valley with streams, cliffs and century-old ash and maple tress in play.

A summertime favourite, Moose Mountain Provincial Park is known for its distinctive forests of aspen, birch, ash and maple. Seasonal interpretive staff are on hand to answer questions about programming and park events from the Visitor Centre, a historic fieldstone chalet overlooking Kenosee Lake. The park has an extensive trail system with many interpretive signs and beautiful views of the small lakes in the area.

Kenosee Lake hosts so many recreational activities. Swim, build a sand castle, launch a boat or rent a canoe or kayak from the visitor centre. Whether your sport is tennis, basketball, baseball or mini golf, you’ll find the facility here. Golfers are spoiled with one of western Canada’s most scenic cours-

es, Golf Kenosee. The Kenosee Superslides offer a day of family fun, while the Kenosee Lake Riding Acadamy has guided, lakeside trail rides. Nothing quite says summer like the drive-in theatre. Just south of the park, the Prairie Dog Drive-In offers the magic of a bygone pastime with the modern technology of digital, high definition video and stereo sound.

The Cannington Manor Provincial Park was once a British settlers’ society with croquet, cricket and fox hunts. Although the way of life flourished for some time, it wasn’t long before the Cannington bachelors abandoned the settlement. Today the park recreates this exciting time with costumed interpreters, special events like Victorian Tea and buggy rides.

From ancient times to the more recent history of prairie settlement and the industrial revolution, chronicles of the past live on in southern Saskatchewan. The fabulous geography of the Frenchman River Valley and the badlands to the beautiful tree-lined lake valleys, there is much to explore. 
