Truck drivers urgently needed BY BARB GLEN LETHBRIDGE BUREAU

The shortage of truck drivers in Western Canada has reached crisis proportions, say those in Alberta’s trucking industry. In some cases, loads of goods are sitting at truck terminals ready for delivery but no qualified drivers are available to take them to customers. And it is likely to get worse, say members of the Southern Alberta Truck Exposition Association. “Two feet and a heartbeat, and the body’s fairly warm, you could be a truck driver,” quipped one trucker at a March 17 meeting of the group in Lethbridge. His joke drew rueful grins from those gathered to discuss ways to attract people to a job that is at least 20,000 people short of the needed workforce. A study that the Conference Board of Canada did in 2013 on behalf of the Canadian Trucking Alliance predicted Canada will have a truck driver shortfall of about 30,000 by 2020 if the industry fails to find new recruits in addition to replacements for retirees. Have farm groups become federal cheerleaders? Some farm groups craft communications to land federal favour rather than debate important issues BRANDON BUREAU

The communication team at the Alberta Wheat Commission has a fondness for affirmative verbs. When employees craft public statements for the commission,

they like to “applaud,” “commend” and “congratulate” the federal government or agriculture minister Gerry Ritz for supporting Canadian farmers. The commission gets a lot of mileage from those words because six out of the 15 news releases posted on its

website praise the good works of the federal government. For example, in late February Ritz announced that Bill C-18, the Agricultural Growth Act, had received royal assent. Shortly after, the commission issued its own release, commending

the federal government for getting the bill through Parliament. The commission isn’t the only commodity or farm group that has good things to say about the federal government. SEE FARM GROUPS, PAGE 4
