Auto Zone Command Saves Colony $78,000 by Eliminating Overlap ™

Sol Stahl couldn’t believe the huge savings he gained this past spring by eliminating overlap in his fields with Auto Zone Command overlap control, which came as a standard feature on three new SeedMaster systems he purchased recently.

“We saved $78,000 on canola seed alone,” says Stahl, the Farm Boss at Spring Water Colony near Biggar, Sask. While reducing overlap was one of the main reasons the colony bought the 80foot SeedMasters with 305-bu tanks, Stahl says he didn’t expect Auto Zone Command would have such an enormous impact.

As the colony seeded its 20,000 acres, Stahl worried his crew had made a major mistake as massive amounts of canola seed were carried back to the shed. “I even sat in the tractor to see what they were doing wrong, but they seemed to be doing everything right,” he says. “It was unbelievable the amount of seed we weren’t using. I figured it would be the biggest disaster ever.”

He’s now optimistic he’ll exceed last year’s 60 bu/acre canola yields. “We’ve never had a canola stand like this. All of our crops were phenomenal,” he says. “We targeted six plants per square foot and I had anywhere from 10 to 13 plants per square foot.”

He says many growers are looking for overlap control because wet conditions over the last three years have forced them to seed around more sloughs. “On average it saves them 12 per cent on inputs by eliminating overlap, and they get a yield advantage because they aren’t overcrowding plants by double seeding,” he says. “But growers often don’t realize how much they’ll save with Auto Zone Command until they’ve used it for the first time.”

No Lodging Spring Water Colony also had two large bins of fertilizer and a half bin of peas left over because overlap was drastically reduced on all crops – most notably on oddshaped fields and land with oil wells, low spots, and trees to seed around, says Stahl. “We’d always get lodging on the headlands before, because we were doubling up on fertilizer there. Not this year.”

SE¯D contributed $10,000 to support a successful fundraiser that will help rebuild the LeRoy arena, which was destroyed by fire in 2013 (see photo below).

The town of LeRoy, Sask., lost the ‘heartbeat of its community’ when a fire destroyed its arena in May 2013. However, thanks to SeedMaster’s SE¯D Foundation, which helped fund a successful auction fundraiser, the community is well on its way to building a new $5 million arena.

The SE¯D grant was used to help keep people at the auction for the entire day, says SE¯D Foundation Coordinator, Joey Tremblay. “They had a pancake breakfast, concession, beer garden, and an inflatable playground for the kids. It ended with a supper, an evening cabaret, and a dance.”

“Supporting LeRoy was important to us because of our long history with the community,” says SeedMaster President, Norbert Beaujot. “I took the first drill I ever built to LeRoy in 1993 for a no-till seeding demo. There were hundreds of farmers present for the first unveiling of my new opener technology, which eventually evolved into the SeedMaster,” explains Beaujot.

Giving Back “Since then we’ve gained many long-time customers in that area,” he says. “That’s what we look for with SE¯D – a way of giving back to communities that have supported SeedMaster over the years.”

Les McGrath, a long-time SeedMaster customer and an organizer of that 1993 seeding demo, says he appreciates SeedMaster’s support of the LeRoy fundraiser. “If what we did back then helped them out, we’re proud of that. We’re also very proud that they’ve come back to help our community. They’re a first-rate, top-notch company,” says McGrath.

SE¯D donated $10,000 to help cover expenses for the LeRoy Raise the Roof Auction and Fundraiser. “When SE¯D stepped up, it took the pressure off,” says event organizer, Ervin McGrath. “There were a lot of expenses to be paid up front like tent rentals, the band, and food costs.”

Auto Zone Command automatically halts product flow to drill sections in overlap zones of the field, explains SeedMaster ACE Advisor Colin McMaster. “And our exclusive FLIP (Full Last Implement Pass)™ technology creates virtual passes that ensure the seeded crop in overlap areas is never disturbed. FLIP seeds those virtual passes last, preventing overlap and maximizing yields.”

Huge Savings Stahl says he’ll never seed without Auto Zone Command again. “Inputs are expensive, and I saved 18 per cent on canola seed alone. At $12/lb on 8,000 acres of canola, that’s huge.”

Our Growing Team Local auctioneer Bruce Schapansky provided his services for free, and many individuals and businesses donated auction items. “We had everything from baking to eight Saskatchewan Roughrider tickets that sold for $9,250,” says Ervin.

SeedMaster Believes in Small Towns The event exceeded expectations. “We wanted to raise $100,000 and everyone said we’d never do it. We ended up raising $180,000.

The success of this fundraiser has proven that LeRoy really wants this rink,” says Ervin. “It’s also shown us that there are companies like SeedMaster that believe in small towns.”

As SeedMaster develops new, innovative technologies, it has expanded its Engineering Department with the addition of two new employees.

Matthew Neilson joined the company in July as a production engineer.

Saurabh Patel, who has been with SeedMaster for five years on the production floor, is now a drafting technician.

“It’s exciting to add talented, new people to our Engineering Department who can enhance our production processes, and provide support to our existing product designers,” says Greg Vennard, SeedMaster Engineering Manager. “This allows our Engineering team to develop new products that keep raising the bar on direct seeding technology, and help our customers achieve even greater success on their farms.”

The SeedMaster Advantage on Soybeans No Difference in Seed Survival Between Tilled Vs. No-Till Plots As interest in soybeans grows across Western Canada, trials at the SeedMaster Research Farm comparing tilled versus no-till soybeans on cereal stubble are pointing to some valuable conclusions for growers.

“So far there is no visual difference between the two treatments, and there was no difference in seed survival or emergence,” says SeedMaster’s Field Research Manager, Owen Kinch. “We expect yields will also be similar once harvest is complete.”

Farmers Eager for Results Farmers are eager for the trial results, says Kinch. “Many of our farmers operate large farms, and don’t have time for anything but direct seeding in the spring,” he says.

“We hope the yield results will confirm they can use their SeedMasters to successfully direct seed soybeans without requiring tillage or harrowing to blacken the soil.”

Garry Hnatowich, a research scientist with the Irrigation Crop Diversification Corporation in Outlook, Sask., says no-till soybeans can be grown successfully in Western Canada as long as seeding is delayed until soil temperatures reach 10 degrees Celsius.

“In seeding studies this year, soybean plant populations seeded during the first and second week of May were significantly lower than those seeded after May 15th,” he notes.

Hnatowich says the blackened furrow that a SeedMaster creates can help warm the soil quicker for earlier emergence. “Soybeans are shallow seeded so it doesn’t take much black surface to get them going,” he explains.

The gentleness of SeedMaster’s on-frame Individual Row Metering tanks is also an advantage because “the seeds will crack and split with aggressive handling,” says Hnatowich. The precision placement of SeedMaster

Hnatowich points out that soybeans need to be inoculated because Western Canadian soils don’t have the N-fixing bacteria they need. This is another area where a SeedMaster system can be beneficial. “Growers with two-tank systems may have to choose between applying granular inoculant or phosphate fertilizer. A multi-tank system like the SeedMaster lets growers carry seed, fertilizer, and inoculant and apply it all in one pass,” he explains.

Foundation in Saskatchewan. He agrees the SeedMaster is a good tool for direct seeding soybeans into cereal stubble. “We’ve always had success with it. You don’t need a planter to grow soybeans.”

Wet Weather Drives Interest in Soybeans Holzapfel says interest in soybeans across Western Canada is largely driven by wet weather over the past few years, which has resulted in lower pea and lentil yields. “They can’t handle excess moisture, whereas soybeans can,” he says. “Growers need to choose the earliest maturing varieties, but soybeans are a pretty easy crop to grow and harvest,” he notes. “They don’t need much fertilizer, weed control is straightforward, and we haven’t had disease or insect problems with them.”

New Research Partnership Announced SeedMaster is partnering with the South East Research Farm (SERF) in Redvers, Sask., on a collaborative agreement that will benefit growers across Western Canada.

“We’ve signed a Memorandum of Understanding that gives SERF access to fields at the SeedMaster Research Farm to conduct more agronomy-based research plots,” says SeedMaster Field Research Manager, Owen Kinch.

Greater Accountability For SeedMaster, the agreement provides third party verification of all SeedMaster trials at the Research Farm. “Having our data overseen by SERF staff, who are arm’s-length from the company, is important,” says Kinch.

“Our focus has always been to conduct objective research that provides growers with valuable information they can use to achieve greater profitability and success on their own farms. This new collaboration with SERF helps us take that to a higher level – to achieve even greater accountability and objectivity in our work,” he explains.

SERF is a non-profit, independent research farm with a very small land base, says Shaw. It’s one of eight producer-driven, Agriculture Applied Research Management (Agri-ARM) sites in Saskatchewan.

“A good portion of our land has been too wet to seed lately,” says Shaw.

“I’ve had to be really careful over the last few years about what projects we can initiate because of land constraints. With this new partnership, we’ll be a lot less limited for land.”

New Technologies Unveiled We’ll also officially unveil several new technologies at the conferences, including our new corn meter (see page 6). It gently places corn more evenly down the row than any other drill, allowing growers to apply fertilizer in a single pass, and saving them from having to purchase a corn planter.

We’ll unveil our new Auto Lift™ – an option now available on 2015 SeedMasters. The Auto Lift senses when the headland is approaching – automatically turning product off and on, and lifting or lowering openers at exactly the right time as the grower performs the turn. This year at the farm, we adapted our 100-foot SeedMaster to create tramlines for our 100-foot sprayer. By moving two of the openers on each side of the drill, we reduced crop damage from trampling by two per cent. It’s a simple idea that’s worth considering for larger farmers.

50 Per Cent More Trials Shaw estimates SERF could increase the number of research trials it conducts by 50 per cent because of the abundance of land available to SERF at the SeedMaster Research Farm.

Shaw says she’s excited by the opportunity to reach more growers with SERF research trials through SeedMaster communication channels such as its newsletter, website, and field days.

“A lot of farmers come to look at SeedMaster plots,” says Shaw. “If we can get 100 to 200 growers looking at our projects too, we’ll have much more impact.”

Shaw hopes to conduct soybean trials, as well as corn trials with SeedMaster’s new corn meter, when SERF begins trial work at the SeedMaster Research Farm this spring.

SeedMaster Training Sessions Planned SeedMaster is gearing up for another round of training seminars for its dealers and new SeedMaster owners this winter.

“These sessions fill up fast. We often have to add additional dates to accommodate everyone,” says SeedMaster Sales Manager, Rochelle Beaujot. “We typically offer eight dealer training sessions in February, and four to five customer training sessions in March.”

Expert Technical Training for Dealers “The dealer sessions are very in-depth,” says Beaujot.

“They equip our dealers with the technical training they need to be experts on how to fully service SeedMaster systems for their customers. The training includes all hydraulic and electrical functions, the Raven Viper Pro™ monitor, and how to use Slingshot™ to provide remote access in order to troubleshoot for customers who are in the field seeding crops.”

Travis Mohr, Sales and Service Manager with Peace Country Equipment in Donnelly, Alta., says his dealership sends two people to every SeedMaster training session.

SeedMaster Makes Variable Rate Easy Darryl MacKay is among a growing number of farmers using a SeedMaster system to do variable rate fertilizer applications on their farms.

“Variable rate is simple to do with a SeedMaster. You just upload your prescription map to the Raven Viper Pro monitor and it does everything for you,” says MacKay, who farms with his father Mervin near Irma, Alta. The MacKays use their 70 ft. SeedMaster system – which includes a 300-bu onboard tank and 520-bu Nova Smart Cart – to vary the rate of fertilizer on some fields.

This spring MacKay used his SeedMaster to apply variable rate fertilizer on a hilly, 200-acre canola field. “We applied more fertilizer in higher-yield areas, and we cut back on hilltops where the soil is lighter and yields are lower,” says MacKay. “It’s all about better utilizing fertilizer to get the best return.”

The Benefits of Variable Rate MacKay has noticed more even emergence, growth, and maturity with variable rate. “Everything is much easier when you have a nice, even field – things like fungicide timing, swathing, and combining. I’m also expecting a yield bump from applying higher fertilizer rates to the productive areas.”

Agronomists Choose SeedMaster Garry Brolund, a Precision Agronomist with Farmers Edge, says ease of operation, flexible tank configurations, and precise metering are the main reasons that he and many other agronomists across Western Canada choose SeedMaster systems when doing variable rate trials.

Brolund says SeedMaster’s on-board Individual Row Metering (IRM) tanks and various Nova Smart Cart models let him vary the rate of multiple products at the same time. “The precise metering system and weigh scales are also a nice fit with variable rate,” he says, noting that IRM and Smart Cal provide him with certainty that he’s always achieving his targeted rates accurately.

Growers who do variable rate fertilizer applications typically enjoy yield increases, cost savings, or other benefits, says Brolund. That’s because they’re addressing production limitations in their fields, such as salinity, sandy soils, or eroded knolls, he explains.

Makes On-Farm Trials Easier MacKay also used his SeedMaster’s variable rate capabilities to do canola seeding rate trials – comparing rates of three to five lbs/acre – to see which produces the highest yields.

“An increasing number of SeedMaster owners are using their SeedMaster to do on-farm trials because the technology makes it so easy,” says Tim Ottenbreit, SeedMaster Product Development Specialist. “It helps them fine-tune their farming practices and improve their bottom line.”

Variable Rate Trials at SeedMaster Research Farm While fertilizer is the focus of most variable rate applications, the concept of variable rate seeding is now being explored at the SeedMaster Research Farm, in collaboration with Farmers Edge. Ongoing trials are comparing three spring wheat seeding rates on three production zones in the field.

“The aim is to determine optimal seeding rates across the various field zones,” says Garry Brolund with Farmers Edge. Brolund expects less tillering and reduced disease pressure to boost yields in the higher rate zones.

Trial results will be shared at the upcoming Master Seeders Conferences.

New SeedMaster Corn Meter Launched

As SeedMaster unveils its new corn meter now available as an option on 2015 seeding systems, the new technology is proving to offer major advantages to farmers who are already using it to plant silage and grain corn.

‘No Yield Difference’ “We saw no yield difference between the 700 acres of grain corn we planted with our SeedMaster and the new corn meter, versus the 160 acres we planted with a neighbour’s corn planter last year,” says Brooks White, a Master Seeders Network member who has tested the new corn meter for two years on his farm near Pierson, Man. “As we’ve refined the corn meter design – striving to achieve the same near-singulation precision of our UltraPro Canola Meter – we’ve invited Master Seeders Network members like Brooks to test the technology and provide us with feedback,” explains Owen Kinch, SeedMaster Field Research Manager.

Wet conditions this spring limited White to seeding only 250 acres with the corn meter. While the crop looks good, it was too early to determine yields at the time of publication. “The SeedMaster does a great job of seed placement and depth control,” says White. And although the in-row spacing between plants is “not quite as uniform as a corn planter, it’s pretty good and I plan to keep using it,” he says, especially considering there was no yield difference and it eliminates the need to buy a corn planter.

One-Pass Fertilizer Sol Stahl, another Master Seeders Network member, had been poised to buy a new corn planter for his 400 acres of silage corn before hearing about the SeedMaster corn meter. “We tried the corn meter this year and I’m very pleased. The plants all came up nice and even,” says Stahl, the Farm Boss at Spring Water Colony near Biggar,

Sask. “We can now seed any crop with the SeedMaster, and apply all our fertilizer in one pass. With a corn planter we have to work our ground three times to blacken it up, apply fertilizer, and smooth it out.”

While most corn acres grown on the Prairies are for silage, there is definitely strong interest in grain corn, says Ken Coles of Farming Smarter, a non-profit, producer-led, research organization in Southern Alberta.

“Seed companies are investing heavily in lower heat unit varieties because they see tremendous potential for grain corn in Western Canada,” says Coles. “With clubroot issues in canola and lower commodity prices, growers want to try something different, and corn is getting lots of attention.”

Big Savings Whether they’re growing silage or grain corn, SeedMaster’s new corn meter offers growers many benefits, says Kinch. “The corn meter uses our on-frame, Individual Row Metering – so the seed’s not damaged by going through towers and hitting manifolds,” he explains.

“And seed spacing down the row is more uniform than any other seeder.”

“It adds up to big savings – minimizing the investment required to experiment with new crops like grain corn – and giving growers a one-pass system that can successfully seed all crops,” says Kinch.

Narrow Row Spacing Trials on Corn Research trials at the SeedMaster Research Farm are exploring whether narrower row spacing on grain corn will out yield the more common 30-inch spacing.

“Iowa State University research showed no yield difference between 15-inch and 30-inch rows,” says Owen Kinch, SeedMaster Field Research Manager.

“We want to see if we’ll get the same results in our Western Canadian climate. And we want to

explore any potential benefits of narrower rows – such as possible quicker canopy closure to help suppress weeds. It may also enhance the uniform plant spacing offered by our new corn meter,” he explains.

Currently no corn headers are built for 15-inch row spacing, but there are companies trying to develop headers for any row spacing, says Kinch.

Keeping Growers Ahead of the Curve “Our new corn meter and these research trials are part of our R&D focus to continually develop new direct seeding technologies that keep growers ahead of the curve,” says Kinch. “So when the right corn seed varieties become available, SeedMaster owners will be ready and equipped with the best technology.”

Mohr says the training gives him the knowledge to tackle any service issue his customers might have. “Seeding can be a stressful time, especially if something’s not working and growers are under the gun,” says Mohr. “When you’re trained properly, you have the confidence and ability to diagnose and fix almost any problem, and get the customer going again quickly. The training also gives our customers confidence that they can call us for service support.”

Training for Owners of New and Used SeedMasters SeedMaster customer training sessions have been offered since the company first began. “These sessions teach new SeedMaster owners – of both new and used systems – about the various functions of their drill and tank systems, so when they step into their cab they’re comfortable with how everything works,” says Beaujot.

“Customers who attend the training seminars tend to have fewer problems during spring seeding.”

Most training sessions are held at the SeedMaster manufacturing facility in Emerald Park, and include a plant tour showing participants the quality and care put into each drill and tank system, says Beaujot.
