CROP PRODUCTION | STATISTICS CANADA
CROP LARGER THAN EXPECTED
Canola, wheat beat expectations
The Canadian crop is much smaller than last year’s record harvest but production turned out better than was expected earlier this fall. Statistics Canada’s farmer survey shows canola and wheat production topped analysts’ expectations. Durum was also up from the September outlook, but analysts expected that. Flax, peas and some special crops turned out worse than expected.
Statistics Canada report | Total production lower than 2013-14, better than expected BY MARY MACARTHUR CAMROSE BUREAU
There wasn’t a collective yawn when Statistics Canada released its final crop estimate Dec. 5, but there may have been collective eye rolling. Instead of reacting negatively to Statistics Canada’s estimates that canola and wheat estimates were higher than previously estimated,
the market took it all in stride. Statistics Canada pegged canola 1.5 million tonnes higher than its estimate of 14 million tonnes in the previous report, which was issued Oct. 3. The new 15.5 million tonnes estimate should have sparked a market drop, but canola prices rose after a brief dip, said market analyst Errol Anderson of ProMarket Wire. SEE CANOLA PERFORMS, PAGE 2

Non-GM flax variety in limbo Flax council withdraws funding agreement for Cibus research project BY SEAN PRATT SASKATOON NEWSROOM
A breeding project that was supposed to bring flax into the 21st century has stalled. The Flax Council of Canada has stopped funding a multimilliondollar project to develop a nongenetically modified herbicide tolerant line of flax. In 2010, the council announced with much fanfare that it had signed an agreement with Cibus Global to develop and commercialize herbicide tolerant flax using Cibus’s patented Rapid Trait Development System (RTDS). The council had said it would pay Cibus $5.5 million to develop the trait, with up to $4 million of that coming from the federal government. SEE FLAX PROJECT, PAGE 3
