Medals stolen THIEVES may have used a doggie door to enter a Somerville house last week to steal two sets of war medals, jewellery, a laptop computer, childhood memorabilia and even rosary beads. The theft from the Whitneys Rd house has shocked the owner, Marc Burton-Walter, because the items have mostly sentimental value. They include his grandfather’s WWII medals – the 1939-1945 Star, the Africa Star, War Medal and Defence Medal (all original), and his New Zealand-born great uncle’s WWI replica medals – 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. “They will probably end up in a bin because they are worthless to anybody else, but are tremendously valuable to my family,” Mr BurtonWalter said. Thieves made their way into the house about 9.20am Friday – just after Mr Burton-Walter left the property to drive to the shops. “There are so many robberies in Tyabb and Somerville lately that everyone is very much aware these days,” he said. Detective Sergeant Dannie Dobell, of Mornington Peninsula CIU, said neighbours saw a white EF Ford in the driveway at that time of the thefts. Anyone with information should call Detective Senior Constable Toby Tyler, 59781300 or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 00.
State set to take helm at Hastings Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au THE state government appears to be getting ready to take over the day-today running of the Port of Hastings. The 20-year contract with port manager Patrick Ports Hastings ends next June and the government is awaiting a report on management options from the Port of Hastings Development Authority. The authority now has a staff of
eight, far fewer than the 61 – including 31 contractors – it employed just two years ago when the previous Liberal National coalition government was proceeding with plans for a container terminal at Hastings. Those plans ended abruptly with the election of the Daniel Andrews-led Labor government, which said a decision on where to locate the state’s next major port would rest on advice from Infrastructure Victoria. Time lines for a container port being built at Hastings, if ever, are now put
at 15 to 30 years. Latest figures show the port is now visited each year by 50 “big” ships (50,000-100,000 tonnes) and 100 “small” ships (100-2000 tonnes). However, the government says Hastings “offers significant development opportunities for bulk industries including the refined fuel, oil and gas industries”. That statement was made in a 1 April news release announcing the appointment of Malcolm Geier as CEO of the Port of Hastings Development Authority.
Mr Geier took over from long term former Mornington Peninsula Shire CEO, Michael Kennedy, whose interim appointment saw him replace the authority’s first CEO, Mike Lean. “Mr Geier brings to the role substantial qualifications following a successful 10 years at the Port of Portland, with the last six years as business development manager during a major growth period which saw significant increases in exports and volume,” the April news release issued by Mr Donnellan’s office stated.

In the past couple of weeks the authority has cut its staff from 13 to eight. The latest round of cuts included the executive assistant, its engineering manager, procurement manager, IT manager and acting chief financial officer. Mr Geirer said “having the state manage the port” was one of the options the port authority had investigated. He said the most recent shedding of five jobs ensured the authority “is the right size moving forward”. Continued Page 8

Tip a key part of waste plan Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au THE Rye tip will continue to operate until new technologies are adopted to cope with waste on the Mornington Peninsula. Mornington Peninsula Shire last week agreed to extend the life of the tip beyond 2018 and join other municipalities in finding a site and method to dispose of their waste. Cr David Gibb said it would be cheaper to use Rye rather than trucking the peninsula’s waste elsewhere. The shire’s plan could also see land in McKirdys Rd, Tyabb, used as a waste reduction and disposal site by several municipalities. The plan revolves around the use of alternative waste technology (AWT) to reduce the amount of rubbish ending up in landfill. Cr Gibb said prolonging use of the Rye tip would not jeopardise the shire’s bid to be carbon neutral within five years. He said claims that it was necessary to close Rye to achieve carbon neutrality had been “a fraud on ratepayers”. Trucking waste off the peninsula “to put into someone else’s landfill” would cost $1.5 million extra a year. “We are already capturing [at Rye] so much methane that we could buy carbon credits to cover our carbon neutrality 100 per cent,” Cr Gibb said. He said using the Rye tip for another 15 years had been costed at more than $28 million while using trucks and paying tipping fees outside of
the shire would cost more than $50 million. “People have realised the error of their ways that [trucking waste elsewhere] didn’t stack up financially or environmentally.” Council last week agreed to extend the use of the Rye tip for an initial three years providing it to remain flexible “in its ability to respond to the state government’s efforts to establish an AWT facility”. Meanwhile, the shire would join the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group (MWRRG) in tendering for an AWT south east of Melbourne “noting the option and opportunity of locating such a facility at council’s Tyabb waste facility adjacent to Western Port Highway”. Background notes provided to councillors stated that it is “very likely” that Melbourne would have just three landfills operating within 15, and all west of the city. “There are strategic risks, a greater expense and environmental disbenefits when transporting the kerbside municipal waste of [the peninsula] across the city to another landfill.” Cr Gibb’s motion to extend the life of the Rye tip was carried 6:4. For the motion were Crs Gibb, David Garnock, Bev Colomb, Andrew Dixon, Anne Shaw and Antonella Celi; against Crs Hugh Fraser, Tim Rodgers, Tim Wood and Graham Pittock. In February council has adopted a policy to become carbon neutral within five years. Cr Pittock, who late last year attended an international climate change summit in Paris, said the policy of achieving “zero emissions” would “return a financial payback to the shire and its community”.

Councillors’ costs are on the rise Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au MORNINGTON Peninsula Shire councillors were on Monday poised to give themselves the right to spend an extra $14,000 over their four-year terms, bringing the total to $30,000. The success of the latest bid to define their entitlements could depend on one councillor agreeing to being paid travelling expenses of 76 cents a kilometre. A move to set new four-year spending limits - $16,000 for conferences and seminars; $10,000 education and training; and $1000 a year entertainment – missed out on being adopted on Monday 22 August by one vote. If voting patterns stayed the same on Monday this week, Cr Andrew Dixon would have held the deciding vote. Cr Dixon has previously told The News that he disagreed with the draft policy which suggested councillors receive 67 cents a kilometre. He said he had a six-cylinder car and was able to claim $1.07 a kilometre. In the lead up to this week’s meeting other councillors seemed certain Cr Dixon would accept the compromise 76 cents, which is part of the package aimed at increasing councillor entitlements to $30,000. Councillors also receive a $29,000 a year stipend. The mayor gets a $92,000 a year
stipend and under the new package is also allowed to spend an extra $3500 on conferences and seminars and $2000 a year on entertainment. Under the new expenditure policy councillors cannot claim for alcohol and are subject to more definite conditions for child care payments. The new policy states that child care payments cannot be made to someone who “normally or regularly” lives with a councillor. Child care rates are put at $31 an hour for day/evening weekday care; $42 an hour on weekends; and $53 an hour on public holidays. The long road to setting limits and adopting a new expenses policy included a council resolution in April for Cr Antonella Celi to repay about $9000 of the $28,520 paid by the shire for her attendance on conferences and seminars. This decision was reversed in May. This followed legal advice was received which cast doubts on the $16,000-a-term spending limit for each councillor and that repayment of any perceived overspending could not be forced. Cr David Gibb said he was opposed to councillors being able to use their expense allowances to buy alcohol or pay for overseas flights. However, while accepting that overseas trips would be allowed he would not back the new expenditure policy if
alcohol purchases were given the all clear. “I don’t believe that alcohol should be charged to ratepayers at any time,” he said. When it came to overseas trips and “luxury hotels”, which he had “consistently voted against”, he would now “let that one pass; I can see several points of view”. The policy also states that councillors must travel in economy class if flying and Cr Gibb said being a councillor was “the equivalent of being a company director” and believed it appropriate pay for councillors to undertake professional courses “with an exam at the end”. The shire has paid for Cr Gibb to do a company director’s course. Cr Gibb said the new spending limits “are ceilings, not targets – I’d be amazed if anyone got there”. Cr Hugh Fraser on Thursday branded the new expenses policy as “such a silly exercise”. “We need to revise all policies within six months of the election of the new council,” he said. “This new policy is costing an extra $110,000.” The motion to adopt the revised expenditure policy was lost on the casting vote of the mayor, Cr Graham Pittock, supported by Crs Fraser, Dixon, Tim Rodgers and Tim Wood. For the motion were Crs Celi, Anne Shaw, Bev Colomb and David Garnock.

Young tackle bay pollution ABOUT 50 primary school “marine ambassadors” last week had a close look at trapped pollutants at Narambi Reserve, Mornington. The experience was part of the Dolphin Research Institute’s ‘i sea, i care’ school ambassador program, a partnership with Mornington Peninsula Shire. Pupils saw and smelt rotting waste being emptied from a gross pollution trap which stops stormwater pollutants washed from streets reaching Port Phillip. Emptying the trap came just weeks after a significant algal bloom was seen in Mornington harbour. The ambassadors, trained as peer
educators, will go back to their schools and share their experiences. Their goal is to reduce pollutants entering drains and, ultimately, threatening our marine treasures. Cleaning the pollution traps is a massive financial cost to state and local government – but poses a bigger cost to the environment if they weren’t there. “The institute is concerned about the link between water quality in the bay and the health of our dolphins,” DRI executive director Jeff Weir said. “If it’s not safe for us to swim in our bay after rain, then it’s also not safe for our dolphins, either. We need to do much better.”

Hospital protest: Mental health staff unhappy at staffing levels amid violent assaults by some patients. Picture: Gary Sissons
Mental health staff fears for safety Neil Walker neil@mpnews.com.au
Big day looms: Somerville Rise Primary School Grade 6 leaders Olivia McClelland and Charlie Hammond with principal Nicky Fammartino.
MENTAL health workers walked off the job for two hours on Tuesday 9 August in protest over “violent incidents and increasing demand” at Peninsula Community Mental Health Service at Frankston Hospital. The Health and Community Services Union (HACSU) said extra staffing and safety for staff should be a top priority and is demanding a new enterprise bargaining agreement “to improve service delivery, staffing levels and safety for workers and consumers”. “We need a system that meets the demand, we need to attract, retain and value the work of mental health work-
ers in order to meet this demand,” HSU representative Paul Healey said. “The Victorian government must invest in this area or it will pay a heavier price down the track with people becoming marginalised, creating social dislocation and suffering.” Mr Healey said violent attacks on staff are “not uncommon”. “Clinicians have been pinned down, spat on and assaulted.” Peninsula Health nursing acting executive director Fiona Reed said: “Peninsula Health values our staff who work in mental health and respects their right to participate in industrial action.” EBA negotiations are being held between the HACSU, Victorian Health Industry Association and the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services.
“Peninsula Health is not involved in these negotiations,” Ms Reed said. The staff’s strike action came just a week after Premier Daniel Andrews visited Frankston Hospital to announce a $27 million program aimed at increasing workforce training, school-based support and mental health literacy program within several regions including Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula. A spokeswoman for Mental Health Minister Martin Foley said the government hopes to agree a new EBA for mental health workers soon amid talks to resolve “final points”. “We recognise that people working in our mental health system do vital work in a difficult environment,” Hayley McNaughton said.

‘Significant’ arrest over hoon meets A SOMERVILLE man has been remanded in custody after appearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court last week following an investigation by Taskforce Regarder. The man, 23, was arrested Thursday afternoon on charges of reckless conduct endangering serious injury, prohibited person possess firearm, trafficking drug of dependence and possessing a drug of dependence. The taskforce was established in November in response to the growing number of hoon gatherings across metropolitan Melbourne. It has since made more than 50 arrests. Acting Inspector Mike Daly, of Dandenong CIU, said police the man’s arrest was “significant”. He said police would be alleging that he was one of the ringleaders of the gatherings in which hotted-up cars do wheelies and burn-outs in suburban streets in front of up to 300 spectators. The potential loss of control by the drivers poses significant risks to the public, he said. The man has been remanded in custody to appear at court at a date to be fixed. A 21-year-old Belgrave South man has also been charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury as part of the investigation. He has been bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 28 October.

‘Incentives’ to ease power use spikes IT’S a baking hot day and it seems all the home air-conditioners on the Mornington Peninsula are switched on and guzzling power at the same time. This surge in seasonal demand, spurred on by holiday makers, leads to an unsustainable peak and then crash, the system fails and there’s a blackout. That’s the sort of scenario underpinning the Community Grids project – described as a “landmark” demand response and energy storage project, about to be rolled out on the southern peninsula. Community Grids aims to improve the reliability of the area’s electricity supply without the need for costly infrastructure upgrades. It will involve solar panels, battery storage systems and demand response enabled device units, which will allow businesses, households and community centres to reduce or shift their energy use during “peak demand events” such as heatwaves. The company behind the project, GreenSync, says that over the next five years it will engage and “incentivise” households, small businesses and community organisations from Rosebud to Portsea to help them reduce or shift their electricity use manually or through the use of solar panels and energy storage systems. Participants reducing their demand at critical times will be given cash payments, credits or products to make their efforts worthwhile. “We will use our cloud based technology platform to monitor and coordinate energy demand. During a critical event the platform will automatically reduce equipment use or notify participants to manually control their load,”
Community Projects director Bruce Thompson said. This will affect the use of air-conditioners, water pumps, battery storages and diesel generators. GreenSync will receive $554,886 in state government funding to support the control platform which “co-ordinates and optimises renewables connected to the grid”. The organisation has 25 staff at its Melbourne headquarters and has an office in Singapore. Mr Thompson said he would engage with peninsula utilities and large commercial and industrial operations to encourage them to control their discretionary power use. “The alternatives are building a whole new series of power lines, which would be horrendously expensive and be a big community issue, or to look at managing and controlling our loads in peak periods,” he said. “We will be aiming to coordinate what we can and switch off power to users whom we will incentivise depending on the size of the load and its duration. “This arrangement will be between GreenSync and individuals, retailers or community groups.” The company says it aims to save 11-13 megawatts of load during peak demand events. “We are just putting the pieces together with agreements with United Energy and now the state government ahead of a public launch and community engagement program to begin this summer,” Mr Thompson said. He presented the company’s case to Mornington Peninsula Shire councillors yesterday (Monday) and will speak with council officers and community organisations again on Thursday. Stephen Taylor
Bikers’ delight: Design engineer Tom Haines-Sutherland, Red Hill Riders Mark Gardner and Rhys Dowsett, and Cr Tim Wood, at the new bike park.
Making tracks hill’s new bike park bikers are getting ready to test their riding skills on the newly-opened Red Hill Bike Park track. Construction of the $65,000 track began in May, with Mornington Peninhsula Shire working alongside Red Hill Riders Mountain Bike Club to develop a park that will test and improve the confidence, control and safety of riders of varying skill levels. Red Hill Riders president Mark Gardner said mountain biking was one of the fastest growing sports in the world. “New trail centres and riding experiences are attracting riders from all over the country, and mountain biking on the Mornington Peninsula is no different,” he said. “Red Hill Riders now have more than 10 years’ experience working alongside Parks Victoria and Mornington Peninsula Shire to provide
off-road riding experiences by bike.” Park features include a jumps line with drop-in and wall-ride, raised boardwalk style trail and balance lines and a ‘trials’ area. Railway sleepers and logs make testing obstacles, and 400 indigenous plants have been planted. “The club expects riders aged from five to 65 to test themselves on the new trails. “Trails like these will bring riders, families and their friends to the area – and then they will want to explore the peninsula which is huge for tourism,” Mr Gardner said. Red Hill Bike Park is at the Red Hill Station Reserve, Red Hill South. Access is from the car park on Callanans Rd or Red Hill Rd. Details: mornpen.vic.gov.au
Handover: The contract for Patrick Ports Hastings, based at Stony Point, to run the Port of Hastings ends next June and the state government is tipped to take control.
State to take over port Continued from Page 1 “If the state took over the port we would need to add nine staff, mirroring what’s there [employed by Patricks] now,” Mr Geier said. Patrick’s has 10 staff based at Stony Point, including harbourmaster Shane Vedamuttu, who has been there for 15 years, assistant harbourmasters, and office and maintenance staff. “I don’t know when the government will make its decision, but we will soon be submitting information to the state,” Mr Geirer said.

Councillors quiet on election intentions MOST Mornington Peninsula Shire councillors are keeping quiet about whether they will seek re-election in October. Three of the 10 councillors, Hugh Fraser (Nepean ward), Antonella Celi (Seawinds) and David Garnock (Cerberus) say they will stand while two others, Bev Colomb (Briars) and her ward colleague Anne Shaw are saying they have not made up their minds. Another two councillors, David Gibb (Seawinds) and Andrew Dixon (Briars) are reported to have told public meetings they will be standing but have not confirmed this with The News. “I don’t have a comment,” Cr Gibb said on Friday after being asked to confirm that he told an over-50s group on Thursday afternoon that this would be the first election he would not be contesting in 20 years. “I haven’t told the council anything,” Cr Gibb said. His reported comments to the meeting at Rosebud came just hours after he told The News: “That [seeking re-election] remains to be seen. I am considering my position and will decide in early September.”
Cr Celi sent an email to confirming that she would stand and added “stay tuned for more in September”. Cr Fraser was definite: “I am standing for reelection and am looking forward to another four years [on council].” Cr Garnock: “Yes, I am definitely planning to run for election again. Wouldn’t have a clue if anybody is lining-up to challenge me.” Cr Shaw said she would “work it out when the time comes – I’ll tell you when the time comes”. “I’ll make a decision when I’m ready. A lot can happen in two weeks.” Cr Colomb said on Friday that she had yet to make up her mind. “There are life issues and lots of things I want to discuss with my family,” Cr Colomb. “I am certainly leaning towards standing again, but I can’t say 100 per cent, and that’s the truth.” The mayor Cr Graham Pittock (Seawinds) is also “not sure yet”. Crs Dixon, Tim Rodgers (Nepean) and Tim Wood (Red Hill) did not respond by Sunday afternoon to calls or emails from The News. Keith Platt
Safety lessons for older drivers A FREE driving seminar aimed at keeping older drivers safe and mobile is being held at Mornington Community Theatre, 10.30am-12.30pm, Thursday 1 September. The seminar is open to all senior drivers, their families and friends. “Older people make an important contribution to the economic and social well-being of the community as owners, employees or customers of businesses, as volunteers, and through
the support they provide to family and friends,” organiser Nancye-Joy Gardner said. The seminars will cover safe driving strategies, road rules, vehicle safety, health and mobility issues, driver assessments, using alternative transport, and planning for future mobility needs. Bookings are essential for catering purposes. Call Nancye-Joy Gardner, 0419 398 695 or 5986 4621, or email dialsuccessdirect1@bigpond.com

The move also approved by Cr Antonella Celi (Seawinds) and the Briars ward councillor block, to resurrect the polluting Rye tip will effectively set us back years on the path to effective waste management and do so at the expense of the ratepayers. With no management report and no substantial evidence, this move by council amounts to poor conduct and a level of incompetence that repeats itself time and time again. This October I hope the ratepayers will vote to remove the old guard and bring in a new level of professionalism. Kelvin Stingel, Blairgowrie

Tipping Point
Martha Cove isn’t the place for a village I understood the council plan for the Mornington Peninsula included support for existing towns to ensure their commercial viability while maintaining their character. If this is the case, then I cannot understand why Mornington Peninsula Shire Council is allowing development to be expanded at the new village of Martha Cove (“Shire ‘all clear’ for changes at Martha Cove” The News 23/8/16. As recognised in proposals, this will have “some impact” on businesses in both Mt Martha and Dromana. I imagine the last thing businesses at Mt Martha and Dromana need is another village, which will only dilute their place as a local hub and create more competition. This is another example where some of our councillors are saying one thing to the community, and then voting to the contrary at council
meetings.
Rent rise impact Thank you to people such as yoga teacher Jan Winslade who have cared and contributed to many at Mt Martha Community House. Hopefully, the Mornington Peninsula Shire will realise before too late that its proposed huge rental increase will prohibit some fine work being done there for the community (“Hall hire hike puts squeeze on performers” The News 23/8 /16). Cath John, Mt Martha
Progressives disregarded At the [Mornington Peninsula Shire] council meeting on 22 August, Cr David Gibb (Seawinds ward) again showed ratepayers the disregard

If we needed more evidence that Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has ceased to function as an effective decision making body serving the peninsula community, it was on display last Monday. In February of this year the council adopted a carbon neutral policy as a cornerstone of the shire's vision for long-term sustainability. The policy is sensible, practical, has the enthusiastic support of the community and marks our shire as genuinely future focused. On Monday 22 August a group of councillors effectively tore up this policy they voted for six months ago and pushed through a resolution for the continued operation of the Rye tip – the shire's major source of its carbon footprint. We all understand that reducing our carbon footprint and developing effective waste management strategies are complex and nuanced undertakings, but the inconsistency, or hypocrisy, of these councillors is breathtaking. Do our councillors not understand policies they voted in? Do they not care about those policies?; or has our Council become so dysfunctional and factionalised that it is incapable of making consistent, coherent decisions? Given the outcome of last Monday's Council meeting, I fear all three. It appears that the Council is at war with itself and now its divisions are materially damaging the future of the Shire. The only

Election targets If you believe in the right to freedom of information you should be concerned about Mornington Peninsula Shire Council’s new code of conduct. These new regulations limit freedom of information by broadening the normal definition of confidential information to include matters that “could be reasonably considered to be of a confidential nature” (“Reprieve for councils facing the sack” The News 23/8/16). I believe this brings disgrace on the six councillors that ensured its passage. A new group called “Six and out” has been formed to assist candidates for the forthcoming council elections who believe in freedom of information. We need transparency in council and open debate on behalf of voters in order to ensure proper representation by our councillors. “Six and out” will work to replace the following six sitting councillors: Antonella Celi, David Gibb, Anne Shaw, Bev Colomb, Andrew Dixon and David Garnock. If you would like to assist by standing for council call “Six and out” on 0435 260 384 or councileaks@gmail.com, Facebook: Local Government Councileaks. David Gill, Balnarring Beach
Voting rights Regional and suburban businesses should be very concerned about the state government’s proposed changes to their voting rights in council elections. Some of the changes, if enacted, will restrict votes for business owners and operators and hamper their ability to vote for representatives in the local councils on which their livelihoods depend. The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry believes that if you pay rates to have your place of business in a municipality you are entitled to have your say.
The Local Government Act has not been reviewed for more than 25 years and we welcome the opportunity to build stronger communities across the state. Business is a key part of local communities in regional and suburban Victoria, and deserves to retain its voting entitlements in council elections. We will be strongly advocating on behalf of our members to ensure their rights remain unchanged. The Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, established in 1851, is the most influential business organisation in Victoria, informing and servicing more than 15,000 members, customers and clients around the state. Mark Stone, chief executive Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Renewing jobs Peter Strickland (“Containing the future” Letters 23/8/16) got it wrong on the unemployment statistics. Unemployment in US is 4.9 per cent compared to 5.7 per cent in Australia. No need for me to expound on how inaccurate the unemployment statics are for both countries. Since 14 August 2014 when unemployment was at 6.1 per cent for both countries, statistics have been on the down turn. Even though Australia has trended downward on the same slope as the US it has always been about one per cent higher. So I am guessing that Australia should commission a few of these ships like Walmart did and their unemployment rate will come down accordingly. Employment in the renewal able energy sector is much higher in the US than those employed in coal mining. Yet Flinders MP Greg Hunt mentions in his latest newsletter “industry policy is not about choosing between the so-called ‘old’ and ‘new’ industries, it is about government working with all sectors to create the best opportunities for businesses”. We all know how well this worked for the auto industry. So it only makes sense for the government to continue to subsidise fossil fuel-related industries whose assets have been written down in the 2016 financial year by $16,591 million at the
expense of the industries and jobs of the future: renewable energy. Joe Lenzo, Safety Beach
Senate a worry I totally agree with Rupert Steiner (“Children in danger” Letters 23/8/16) and I too watched Malcolm Roberts’ pathetic attempts on Q&A to explain his “theories” against climate change and, yes, I also fear for future generations because of people like him. But, Rupert, don’t give Malcolm Turnbull all the credit for what is going to be a dysfunctional Senate where we have racists and climate deniers. Let us not forget the Greens who through Richard DiNatale voted with Turnbull on the Senate reform that has led us down this path. Between those two politicians, we have gone from what was a workable cross bench in the Senate to the fish and chip lady and her “three penneth of potato cakes” and then there’s the “human headline”. If there is a god hopefully he or she will save us. The previous cross bench was starting to gel, even Ricky Muir was starting to grasp the situation. As for this lot perhaps climate change will come early in the ACT causing Lake BurleyGriffin to rise and flood the Senate . John Cain, McCrae
Abandon footpaths The article “Footpath scheme cracks up” (The News 23/8/16) concerning footpath construction by Mornington Peninsula Shire highlights the inability of the shire to consult with residents in any meaningful way, if at all, before launching into a formal, legal process (special charge scheme) that can leave residents facing a bill for many thousands of dollars. All in addition to their annual rates. A petition tabled at council in April this year showed 87 per cent of residents in Coppin and Point Nepean roads, Sorrento, opposed a footpath scheme because they saw the design as being unsafe and would have a significant negative impact on the environment. The location of two nearby primary schools, a
kindergarten and a church meant that safety concerns, including adequate traffic calming measures and controlled road crossings, particularly for young pupils, should have been an integral part of the design: incredibly they were not. The cost to most property owners involved is more than $4000. The significant cost of mounting a case at VCAT has delivered a further financial burden to those involved - all because council failed to adequately involve ratepayers. Like the residents of Somers, we reluctantly sought the review at VCAT which has now been held and a decision is pending. These reviews at VCAT cost council thousands of dollars in legal fees which would be better spent on delivering essential services in difficult financial times. Hopefully, the residents of Sorrento and Somers will be included in any future discussions following the review of council’s footpath construction strategy and its contribution schemes policy, both of which need significant improvement. In the meantime the schemes in their current form should be abandoned. Geoffrey Allen, Sorrento
‘Sacrificial lamb’ Is Somers to be chastised by Mornington Peninsula Shire Council and be the sacrificial lamb for having the audacity to stand up to its imposed “shared cost concrete footpath scheme”? Despite the resounding rejection result of a survey for the scheme in nine other peninsula locations, it appears to have no intention, regardless of the overwhelming voice of rejection, to reverse their concrete pathway scheme for Somers. Despite the councils flawed data collection that supported its poorly implemented survey and once red Hill ward councillor Tim Wood proposed the passing of the scheme at council, then duly backed other councillors, the scheme went from “process to policy”. Having, thanks to Tim Wood, traversed this line, the council is now saying “too late to talk about how we got here, the flaws and disinformation. The line has been drawn in the sand, there is no going back over that ground, now we will only speak to you about the judicial position
and responsibilities of the council in preserving this decision and implementing it. The Somers Village Community Association will continue at every stage to have the voice of the majority of the ratepayers heard by the council and the Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal. We will take heart that we have put a spotlight on this scheme and its survey process by the council and have contributed to saving nine other areas on our peninsula from being concreted and who knows how many more into the future. Michelle Gregory, Somers Village Community Association.
Illogical comparisons How absurd for refugee advocates to continue to call Australian detention facilities concentration camps and to compare us to Saudi Arabia (“Time for truth” Letters 23/8/16). Any sane person who has seen World War II footage of Buchenwald or Auschwitz knows that Nauru and Manus where one receives three meals a day, full medical care, mobile phones and computers and where one can walk out the gate at any time bears no resemblance to gas chambers, mass executions, starvation and unending brutality. Saudi Arabia, unlike Australia’s free democracy, is an autocratic monarchy which accepts no refugees from its Muslim neighbours, saying they include many terrorists in their ranks. The Saudis execute people for many crimes including adultery, beat women for dress code violations, women may not drive cars and must be accompanied by a male chaperone outside the house. I have not seen the religious police around Rosebud lately, maybe they only operate in Somers and Balnarring. Fortunately most Australians, Labor and Liberal, support sensible border controls to prevent the sort of chaos and violent attacks occurring in Europe. Australia has welcomed migrants from everywhere in a systematic controlled migration program to become part of our free Western civilisation, not to lead to its disintegration. Bernard Kalken Johnston, Rosebud

The Age Stage: Vicki Barber and Brodie Goozee. Picture: Rab Siddhi
Are you at the Age Stage? By Debra Mar - RPPFM LIKE it or not – we are all getting older – and so is the Mornington Peninsula’s population. So starting Thursday 1 September at 11am, RPP FM will broadcast the Age Stage - a new 50 minute weekly magazine-style program designed to explore issues associated with ageing. The Age Stage is aimed at anyone with an interest in the over 50 age group and will focus on all aspects of life from retirement, retirement lifestyles and aged care to health, finances, exercise, food, medical and technological change, entertainment, travel and our homes. Executive producer Brodie Goozee, will present the program alongside Vicki Barber. Goozee and Barber will draw on a line-up of RPP reporters who will report on any topical issues that affect the 50 plus age group.
Three sponsors are helping to help spread the word: The Village Glen, Rosebud, Encore Living and Village Baxter. “The aim of the program is to educate the marketplace and give locals the opportunity to ask questions, Village Glen chief operations officer Peter Nilsson said. Encore Living’s managing director Tom Camp said he would bring “a regional Victoria focus on living options available to older Australians. “I want to ensure people understand what living choices they have and provide accurate information about those choices, he said. Tune in to 98.7FM or 98.3FM Frankston on Thursday 1 September for the opening show just after the 11am news. Live stream from the rppfm.com.au website and download an app.
DEBTS have forced the Frankston Football Club into voluntary administration. The Dolphins called in administrators Worrells Solvency and Forensic Accountants and the VFL club’s players were informed of the shock decision on Friday evening (26 August) as they prepared to face fellow league cellar dwellers North Ballarat on the Saturday in the team’s final game of the season. The football club is believed to be struggling under about $800,000 worth of debts. Worrells issued a statement at the weekend saying it was too early to comment on the reasons for the Dolphins’ plight. The administrator stated two meetings will be held with creditors within 20-30 days of administration to “determine the future of the club. The club’s decision to enter administration comes almost a year after then club general manager Brett Angwin gave assurances the club was not in financial strife despite carrying debts of around $1 million, partly to finance the completion of the
club’s new $3.4 million stadium and function centre redevelopment. “We are not in any sort of financial trouble whatsoever, he said in September last year. “We were audited by AFL Victoria about three weeks ago and received endorsement on our operations. It is understood Mr Angwin, appointed general manager that same month last year, left the Dolphins last month and no successor has been hired. The Frankston Dolphins are one of the few VFL clubs unaffiliated with an AFL team so cannot rely on financial support from such a ‘big brother’ club. In May the club decided to switch off all 27 of its pokies machines at its new function centre to make the club more “family friendly. AFL Victoria, which runs the VFL, issued a statement on Saturday confirming it is aware of Frankston’s financial situation and will work with the club. The Dolphins went down away from home to North Ballarat 8.18 (66) to Frankston’s 8.8 (56) on Saturday in Jason ‘Pongo’ Pongracic’s 50th game for the team. The loss meant the team finished bottom of the league ladder but two wins this season was an improvement on a winless campaign last year.
Saints in with a discount THE St Kilda Football Club’s welcome back to Moorabbin Reserve, and impending exit from Seaford, is official after Kingston Council voted to approve a 50-year lease at Linton St for the AFL club. Kingston councillors voted at a public council meeting on Monday 22 August to give the Saints a 25-year lease with an option for a further 25 years despite some community concern about a $420,000 rates discount over the first decade of the lease. An 84 per cent reduction on building rent means the football club will pay $80,000 rather
than $500,000 in building rent over the first 10 years. Kingston ratepayers objecting to the lease believed St Kilda FC should not receive a discount since council is contributing $5 million worth of ratepayers’ money to the $28.4 million redevelopment of Linton St. Objectors were also unhappy at the club continuing to have 83 pokies machines at the venue. Frankston Council spent $4 million of its ratepayers’ money enticing the AFL club to Seaford after the Saints fell out with Kingston Council over a planned redevelopment at Linton St.

OBITUARY
Scouters salute a former leader By Peter McCullough FORMER Tyabb resident Roy Flood died on 31 July, aged 87. Tobin Brothers chapel in Mt. Martha was packed for his funeral on 10 August with many of the mourners wearing scout scarves in recognition of his contribution as a scout leader. They also formed a guard of honour when the cortege moved away from the chapel. The service was conducted by civil celebrant Bob Cooper and eulogies were delivered by son Gary and former Regional Commissioner Rod Grummitt on behalf of the scouting movement. In March, 2012 the Western Port News featured a three part series on the Flood family with particular reference to Roy. This obituary is drawn from that article. *** ROY Flood was born at Mornington Bush Nursing Hospital on 15 August, 1928, the youngest of three children born to Cliff and Elsa Flood. Their home was the family farm in Boes Road, Tyabb and Roy’s schooling started at the nearby State School in 1934. With his brother Alan and sister Joan he would would walk to school although sometimes they would get a ride with the baker or butcher who came from Somerville. At times Roy would get a ride on the way home on the back of Ron Benton’s horse; it spent the day in the paddock on the west side of the school. Roy received his first bike for Christmas, 1936 and that put an end to walking to school. Later he was given Alan’s racing bike and that lasted for many years, the various hazards notwithstanding. One day he was riding his bike down Graydens Road when he encountered Charlie Hodgins driving five cows. Just as Roy got near them three of the cows changed direction. He hit the last one on the rump and went right over, finishing with the bike on top of him and a badly buckled front wheel. Alan and Roy both attended Frankston High School in Quality Street, where Chisholm TAFE is now. In 1942 Alan left school and started work in Melbourne with John W. Stamp, engineers and manufacturers of the Stampco washing machine; at the time the company was making essential machinery for the Defence Department. Two years later Roy left

school and went to work at John W. Stamp with his brother. Roy enrolled at Collingwood Tech. to do his trade schooling. He received his certificate in 1949 and then did a management course at RMIT which was paid for by the company. After the pushbikes the boys graduated to motorbikes. Alan had an early 350 SV BSA which ran on power kerosene as petrol was rationed. Roy and he would ride it to Frankston, leave it at a friend’s place, and catch the train to the city. They would then catch the tram to Carlton where they boarded and from where they could walk to work. In 1946 Roy bought a 1923 V twin 750 Harley Davidson and sidecar, and Alan bought a Royal Enfield 500SV which also had a sidecar. In 1948 Roy bought a new 500HV AGS which cost 240 pounds ($480); he was 20 years old. Alan then bought a 500HV Norton which cost 270 pounds ($540). They did a lot of travelling in
those years. Roy’s first set of four wheel was an ex-service Fargo (1932) which he bought from his employer in 1952. As his parents were not in good health Roy left John W. Stamp in that year and returned to the farm. Moreover he had met an attractive young lady named Jean Boyle at a dance at the RSL in Frankston and wedding plans were being formulated. The following year they set off in the Fargo to honeymoon in Geelong and Warnambool. Between that year and 1984 they lived in the old house in Boes Road built by Cliff in 1920; it was then demolished and replaced by a two story brick veneer. The old house saw the arrival of sons Gary (born 1955), Rob (1957), and Jamie (1962) and daughter Cathie (1970). In 1956 Alan and Roy bought the Tyabb garage which they operated for the next 25 years under the name of A. & R. Flood Pty. Ltd. They carried

A lifetime of scouting Scouting started for Roy with a tent in the backyard. After a life of service, he was awarded the Medal of Merit in 1989 by Chief Scout in Australia, Sir Ninian Stephens.
out car and truck repairs and repaired farm machinery. Roy became adept at manufacturing specialist “one-off” items; in particular he built mobile or tractor-mounted fork lifts to suit the smaller cool stores that were around the district. Roy then became a shopkeeper, owning Beach Side Hardware in Mt. Martha between 1983 and 1986. During the following ten years he operated Doveton Hardware with his son, Rob. Jean and Roy moved to Mt. Martha in 2000 where Jean passed away in 2011 following a four year battle with cancer. During his time in the garage at Tyabb, Roy made a go-cart and belonged to the Mornington Peninsula Go-Kart Club. He raced on a track at the back of Rosebud and his go-cart was an openspace frame with a 125cc BSA motor bike motor. He was picked to race at Seymour for the Victorian championship but did not win; by then they were importing flexible frames and hot motors from the USA. The go-cart was to rebirth as Roy’s lawn mower! Alan and Roy also built a 16 foot plywood runabout which started with an Austin 7 motor and finished with an A40 motor. They had many enjoyable fishing trips on Western Port Bay in the runabout. Apart from family and work, the other major interest in Roy’s life was scouting. He first joined the scouts in 1939 when the hall was in Peacock Lane. The hall was built around 1932 on land that was given to the scouts by Tyabb Coolstores and a floor was put in during 1933. The saw mill was erected
in front of the hall around 1938. The Scout Masters in those days were P.A.Twyford (known as PAT), Fred Renouf, Harold Thornell and Ken Grant. Some of the scouts were Bob Houfe (Troop Leader), Gaza Shaw, , Eric Unthank, John and Peter Willoughby, Neville Shaw, Neville Mair,Les Thornell, his brother Alan and a few more making up two patrols. In 1941 Roy went to 1st Frankston Scout Troop which met in the hall near the High School. The Scout Master was Bob Holland who had been an excellent leader, particularly during the war years. In 1943 Roy obtained his 1st Class badge. When he went to work in Melbourne in 1944 he gave scouting away. In 1949 it was decided that the scout hall in Tyabb should be moved to its present location on the border of the Recreation Reserve. A nominal rent of one shilling a year was set. Gary joined the cubs at Tyabb in 1964 and, after much discussion, Roy was persuaded to become Group Leader which he did in 1966. Rob and Jamie also went through cubs and scouts. In May, 1969, Roy was appointed District Scout Leader, Frankston District and subsequently Assistant District Commissioner. In 1977 it was decided to alter the districts with Tyabb, Somerville and Hastings included in Mornington District; Roy was appointed District Commissioner, a warrant he held for 12 years. He was then District President for 6 years. Finally, after 30 years as an adult leader he retired to spend
more time at home but, having taken up golf in 1990, he soon found it absorbed most of his time. Roy attended the 1st Pacific Jamboree in Fiji in 1973 as a Troop Leader in charge of 36 boys and four leaders. He also attended the 16th World Jamboree in NSW in 1987-88. Another of Roy’s interests was football. He joined the Tyabb club in 1947 and, when it disbanded, he transferred to Hastings where he played 133 senior games, mainly as a backman. He was named by the Hastings Football Club as the full back in the team of the decade in which he played: the 1950’s. Roy also played junior cricket for Tyabb before going to the city to work. He resumed when he returned to Tyabb and was made captain of the thirds. He played 96 games at various levels over about 15 years. In 1978 Roy became a JP and served in that capacity for 27 years. He was a member of the Tyabb Fire Brigade for many years and was on the Tyabb Recreation Ground Committee. He also served on the School Council of Tyabb State School which he had attended in pre-war years. Roy always enjoyed the challenge of making things; apart from the machinery in the garage, the go-kart and the boat, he also painstakingly restored a 1925 Rugby Roadster and a 1951 Bantam BSA motor cycle. He was also skilled as a cabinet maker and made a number of pieces of furniture for the family home; his proudest achievement was the grandfather clock which he made for the loungeroom.

The world’s biggest damper IN his eulogy Rod Grummitt told of the occasion when Roy was able to bring together his enthusiasm for scouting and his ability to construct a machine that would have dismayed Heath Robinson. It was 1988 and Australia was celebrating the arrival of the First Fleet 200 years before. Roy’s proposal was that the local scouts should participate in the celebrations by producing a damper; in keeping with events it would be 200 metres long. Early on the morning of 26 January, 1988 an enthusiastic band of scouts and their leaders gathered at the Scout Hall in Moorooduc and the
manufacturing process commenced. Roy’s machine was efficient but painfully slow. As morning turned into afternoon and then evening, the damper inched its way around the adjacent school oval. The target was reached early in the morning of 27 January, much to the relief of the small residue of supporters who had been on site for almost 24 hours. A reminder of this special event can still prompt a groan from anyone who was present. To cap it all off, a submission for inclusion in the Guiness Book of Records was rejected on a technicality.

CRAFTED from West Australian sandstone, this magnificent rural-residential property combines the best of natural materials with a contemporary style and superb quality throughout. Enjoying a tranquil setting on about 6500 square metres in the always popular Kinfauns Estate, the home is set well back from the road privately ensconced amongst the trees. Wonderful timber decking features to all sides of the property which greatly increases the already considerable size of the home - there is also a four-car garage under the roof line - and certainly with the warmer months here will be an entertainer’s paradise on summer nights. A spectacular alfresco deck seamlessly
opens through concertina doors to a formal lounge which in itself is the true standout feature of the home. A massive sandstone wall dominates the room, with soaring cathedral ceilings and exposed beams equally majestic. Amongst the more contemporary stylings of the nearby dining, kitchen and family room, the rich spotted gum timbers used here create an amazing contrast that is absolutely breathtaking. The kitchen is another design marvel, answering every storage need with a host of soft-close cupboards and drawers. Appliances include a stainless-steel oven, range hood and double-drawer dishwasher with servery windows opening out to the verandah and outdoor entertaining area.
Three bedrooms all have built-in robes and share the main bathroom with spa bath, and a powder room. A separate study could be a fifth bedroom if required. The upstairs zone is a superb retreat for parents with an enormous main bedroom enjoying a private balcony which overlooks the property, a walk-in robe and the splendid ensuite has a frameless walk-in shower, twin vanities and a spa bath. There is a healthy amount of lawn area around the home for children and pets to really enjoy themselves and lowmaintenance landscaping to the front of the home includes native grasses and palm trees, with one particularly large palm tree a great focal point as you enter the property.

FOR extended families this immaculate ranch style home provides plenty of accommodation solutions to keep everyone under the one roof with almost two of everything. Two versatile lounge and dining zones can be enjoyed separately, or brought together for one massive living and entertaining space, there are two double garages, two laundries, two master bedrooms with ensuites and walk-in robes, and two splendid kitchens. Verandahs to the front and back greatly increase the already substantial roof line and from here there are sheltered views across the property towards two quaint pergolas dotted through the landscaped gardens that are perfect for quieter moments. Adding another facet to the property is the opportunity to work from home with power and plumbing connected to a private salon with separate entry, and for the trades person, in addition to the two garages, there are two more single carports and a huge three-bay machinery shed. Set on one hectare, this magnificent lifestyle property combines all the elements for work, rest and play.

100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...
Body found at Mornington Junction Compiled by Melissa Walsh A MAGISTERIAL inquiry touching the death of a woman named Elizabeth Bullock, whose body was found at Mornington Junction, on Friday afternoon last, was held on Monday, at the Frankston Mechanics’ Hall, before Mr W. J. Oates, J P., when the following evidence was adduced:— Roydon Ross deposed that he was a butcher residing at Somers. On the 25th inst he was travelling round Mornington Junction in the butcher’s cart, and about one o’clock he stopped to feed his horse at a blind road. There was a watercourse where the horse was feeding. He walked into the ti-tree to cut a stick, and then saw what he thought was the body of a dead woman. She had on a pair of shoes or boots, stock and a green colored dress. He did not look at the body, nor speak to any person of finding the body till he got to Somerville about 7 o’clock, when he reported the fact to Mr Sago. The body was lying in a watercourse. There was about 4 or 5 inches of water running through. After a heavy fall of rain there is about two feet of water running at that place. Robt. M’Cartney, Lance Corporal in the military forces, stationed at Frankston, deposed to going to the place where the body was found, in company with Cons.M’Cormack, on Saturday morning, and finding a small black handbag in the water, also black leather purse which contained 3d in coppers, some tickets and papers. Those produced were
the same. The water was about 2 feet wide and 6 inches deep. Frederick Norbury, Camberwell, deposed that from information received he came to Frankston on Sunday last, and identified the body at the Bay View Hotel as his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bullock. She was about 65 years of age. She used to get her living by caretaking and hawking trinkets about. She was of a wandering and changeable disposition. She left her home about a month ago. He identified the property as having belonged to his sister-inlaw. Constable M’Cornmack deposed to being informed of the finding of the body, and having it conveyed to the Bay View Hotel. The body was very much decomposed. Dr Maxwell deposed to making a post mortem examination of the body, which was very much decomposed. He found that death was caused, by a combination of asphyxia and putrefaction, and occurred probably about three weeks ago. The conditions found were not inconsistent with death by drowning. A verdict in accordance with the medical evidence was returned. *** THE artists who appeared at Scotch concert were delighted with their reception and treatment during their visit and expressed their appreciation. *** THE “Australian Club” held another of their enjoyable dances on Saturday evening 26th inst. There was a fair number of guests, and a program
of 16 dances was gone through to the music of Alliette’s string band. During the evening two raffles were drawn. One of the features of the evening was the coffee supper which was greatly appreciated. The hall was tastefully decorated with gum leaves (as the wattle was not obtainable) and the floor was very fast. *** A RECEPTION was given by the members of the Frankston W.C.T.U. to Mrs Beckett, President of the Williamstown branch, who was visiting Frankston to speak on behalf of the 6 o’clock closing. The President, Mrs Twining, was in the chair, and in a few well chosen words introduced the speaker. Mrs Beckett gave a graphic account of the work the women of Williamstown are doing in connection with the rest home for soldiers which they have established there, and where every comfort for the soldiers can be obtained. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies, and the meeting concluded by singing the National Anthem. *** ONE of the most important meetings ever held by the ratepayers of the Shire will take place on Wednesday evening next, to consider the water scheme of the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission which was unanimously adopted by the Conference on Wednesday last. The benefits to be derived from an abundant water supply are incalculable. Apart from the advantages from a sanitary point of view, values of
properties will be greatly appreciated by having such a supply. It is to be hoped that the ratepayers will ratify unanimously or by an overwhelming majority, the action of their representatives at the conference. An advertisment convening the meeting appears in another column. *** THE important work of tree planting was started at Naval Base on Wednesday, and a very interesting ceremony took place when the honor of the first tree fell to Miss Mary Thomas, daughter of O. P. Thomas Esq C.E. and officer in charge of the Base. The variety planted by that young lady was an evergreen oak. Miss Helen Green planted the second tree. Master Owen Thomas and Misses Eileen and Ada Thomas also took part in the function, each planting a specimen of oak family in a very neat and business-like manner. The work, which is under the supervision of Mr W. L. Hartland superintendent of plantations, Frankston, is now in full swing, and by the end of the week some thousands of pines and other conifers, oaks etc., will be in their places, and in a few years this should be one of the beauty spots of Victoria. *** SIX O’clock Closing. A public meeting was held in the Frankston Mechanics’ Hall on Thursday evening, 24th August, in connection with the above movement, under the auspices of the local branch of the W.C.T.U.and I.O.R. The Rev E. Tonkin occupied
the chair, the speakers being Mrs Beckett, President of the Williamstown Branch of the W.C.T.U. and Mr Barratt, of the Victorian Alliance. The chairman apologised for the absence of Mrs McLeod, who had been advertised to speak, but who was unable to be present on account of illness, but a good substitute had been provided in the person of Mrs Beckett. Previous to introducing the speakers Mr Tonkin spoke on the growing power of the Woman’s Movement in temperance work, and also the war had led the people to deal with the drink question. South Australia, Tasmania, and New South Wales had declared in favor of 6 o’clock closing. They were aiming for the same object in Victoria and it was to help the movement along that they were holding a meeting that evening. Mrs Beckett said she considered the drink problem a woman’s question. All mothers, sisters, and wives knew to their sorrow the curse entailed by drink. The woman today is alive to the necessity of dealing with the question. They had left it for too long for the men —they are too slow. They were out for 6 o’clock closing, and intended to get it. The speaker then spoke on the advantages already derived from closing the bars at half past nine and in conclusion urged them to be up and doing, and put down the drink. There was much need for it. *** From the pages of the Mornington Standard, 2 September, 1916

THE MEANING OF EXISTENCE... AND OTHER SHORT STORIES
Saddle up! Taking the high horse out for a gallop By Stuart McCullough DUST off the saddle. Strap on the riding boots, prepare the bridle and slip into your best pair of jodhpurs. While you’re at it, oil up the spurs and fix your preferred crash helmet firmly to your noggin. Why? Because it’s time to get on the high horse. And once firmly seated astride that mighty steed, I plan to ride that thing into the sunset; its hooves cracking against the bedrock of reason and logic, together we will gallop great distances until all those who resist us collapse with exhaustion. There’s nothing I love more than a little bit of righteous indignation. Frankly, any excuse that I have to get up on my high horse is welcomed. It used to be that I assumed an air of moral superiority only in the most pressing of circumstances. However, I have noticed a disturbing trend in which I will immediately seek refuge on the high moral ground with the slightest provocation. Take my ring tone. I don’t particularly remember how it was that I settled on the ringtone for my mobile. For all I know it’s the default setting. But as far as I’m concerned, its default status has been well earned and deserves a little respect. Recently, however, someone else in my immediate office area has adopted the very same ringtone. I consider this an act of absolute barbarism. It means that I am forever thinking that my phone is calling my name from various geographical points. There should be rules against such acts of naked aggression. Or, if not rules, then an unfettered right to re-
taliate. Granted, I could probably reset my ringtone but why should I? Or, for that matter, how do I? While I realise that kids today change their ringtones as frequently and as easily as they change their shirts or violate international copyright law, these are things to which I have given the scantest of scant attention. Previously, I never really gave any thought to my ringtone. Now it is all that I think about. I hear it in my dreams. At first I thought that I would do as everyone else seems to do and set up
a website to protest my cause, www. stopusingmyringtone.com. I’m yet to get any hits as such and the forum page remains as empty as the world’s loneliest bar. Clearly, the power of the internet has been greatly overstated. There must be another way. It is difficult to know how to settle such a dispute. The days of challenging others to a duel are, largely speaking, behind us. Even an invitation to “paper, rock, scissors” can be regarded as inappropriate for the workplace. Instead, I am
left to trot gently by, firmly seated in my saddle, nose aloft as the ringtone that sounds a lot like mine echoes across the office. If only my desire to seat myself on the elevated equine was limited to ring tones. Recently, a sticker appeared on my milk that declared it was “permeate free”. I was unsure if this meant that the product contained none of the substance in question or whether I was getting a supply of permeate for nothing. As some kind of a bonus. The sticker did not see fit to explain. Despite this scarcity of information, I was supposed to know whether having permeate in your milk was a good or bad thing. I don’t recall being taught anything about permeates in school. To me it sounds like a particular kind of hairstyle from 1987. As I recall, back then, all the girls in my class had remarkable permeates. I can picture them now, hair aloft and reaching for the ceiling in our school photo. But if a permeate is not a hairstyle, then I am officially flummoxed. They assume I know too much. If there’s one thing that gets me on my high horse, it’s assumed knowledge. In fact, more than just putting me on my high horse, it also gets my goat. This, of course, becomes quite difficult, as trying to restrain a live, belligerent goat on an equally hostile thoroughbred is no easy task. In fact, it’s so difficult that I have begun to resent it. And resentment is something that totally gets my gander. It’s not just the fact of getting my gander as much as what it does with my gander once
it’s in its nasty little hands. Those who take ganders that don’t belong to them are clearly a societal menace and should be stopped as a matter of priority. Now on my high horse, balancing my goat and searching for my gander, which has been kidnapped by person or persons unknown, I am determined to get to the bottom of things. I am, in fact, like a dog with a bone. This frightens the goat, which immediately scarpers. The absence of anything resembling opposable digits means that the horse is now nigh-on impossible to control. This makes me feel like a complete goose. Having found my goose, I am still in search of my gander, albeit on a directionless nag that is wandering about the countryside. I tell you, it’s a state of affairs that has really put the cat among the pigeons. The goat, naturally enough, thinks this is hilarious. All this mayhem because of a lousy sticker on my milk telling me that it is permeate free. It is clear what I should do. I must give up the gander, surrender the goose, yield the goat and put the high horse out to pasture. It is time to give it a rest, at least for a while. I should start by being a little kinder to myself, to various metaphorical animals and, indeed, to other people. In fact, perhaps I’ll make some phone calls and cheer some people up. If they don’t answer, I’ll leave a message. I will, of course, turn my phone to vibrate. I suppose I don’t really need that ringtone after all. Not every battle is worth fighting. Not every affront deserves the high horse. www.stuartmccullough.com

Redlegs shine lights on Pines PENINSULA LEAGUE
By Toe Punt MT ELIZA has set up a second semifinal showdown with Frankston YCW after beating Pines by 10 goals in the qualifying final on Saturday at Frankston Park. The highly fancied Redlegs booted the first nine goals of the game before Pines kicked its first major. Pines managed to go toe-to-toe with the Redlegs from the five minute mark of the third term, booting eight goals to nine in that period, eventually going down 18.8 (116) to 8.7 (55). While some of the higher profile players for the Redlegs were a little quiet, the likes of Ryan Turnball, Jordan Capkin and Jimmy Anwyl got under the guard of the Pythons. Turnball booted four first half goals, including three in a row in the second quarter, Capkin snagged three and Anwyl did a sensational shut down job on Guy Hendry. Matt Stanley also finished with three majors and Dan Gormley was dangerous with a couple. Matt Lillie was sensational in the ruck for Mt Eliza and Rohan Heasley was at his magical best. The Redlegs were sharp, despite missing the likes of Justin Van Unen and Darren Booth. Pines went into the match with 10 players who had not tasted finals footy. Aaron Edwards was unstoppable, clearly the best player on the ground with five goals. The Pythons went into the clash without the best full back in the competition in Jack Fisher, the competition’s best centre half forward in Tim Bongetti and tough onballer Paul Scanlon missed with a niggle too. Both Bongetti and Scanlon will return for the first semi final. Pines did well in the opening quarter to restrict Mt Eliza to just two goals, despite them having the aid of a four goal breeze. It was the second quarter that lost the game for Pines, kicking two behinds with the wind while the opposition banged on four goals against it. “The second quarter is the one that got us,” Pines coach Pat Swayne said. “All the key stats had us matching them (Mt Eliza) for three quarters but they got hold of us in that second quarter. “At quarter time, despite the fact we didn’t use the ball all that well, I thought holding them to two goals with the wind was a good start. “However, we were bit like deer in the headlights in the second quarter and it was like we only saw green and red jumpers out on the field – we just kept kicking the ball to them. “As you could imagine, there was a fair amount of negativity around the place after the game but other than a bad second quarter, it wasn’t a write off. “We have some finals experience in those 10 players now and they know what to expect. “We worked hard to earn the double chance and now we need to use it and make it work for us. “We’ll bounce back, that I’m sure of,” Swayne said. Pines will play Bonbeach after the Sharks got the job done against Edithvale. The Eagles were in the contest early before the Sharks took control and got the job done when it counted.

Bombers in the big dance NEPEAN LEAGUE By Toe Punt FRANKSTON Bombers went straight through to the 2016 Nepean Division Grand Final on Saturday after dishing out a football lesson to reigning premier Rosebud at Rye’s RJ Rowley Reserve. The loss for the reigning premier has set up a preliminary final showdown between Rosebud and Hastings after the Blues smashed Somerville in the last quarter on Sunday. Despite kicking the first goal of the game, Rosebud chased tail for the large majority of the afternoon, threatening only twice during the match. The Bombers shot out to a four goal lead in the second quarter after leading by nine points at the first change. Rosebud kicked the first two goals of the third quarter, courtesy of Dale Stephens, to get within nine points, before Frankston steadied and booted the next three majors to go in at three quarter time with a 25 point buffer. The Buds came again early in the last booting the opening two goals through Stephens and Brenton Payne, reducing the margin to 13 points and again giving the game some life. However, Frankston kicked seven of the next nine goals to run out convincing 45 point winners, 15.12 (102) to 8.9 (57). Rosebud went into the match without their best player Greg Bentley, while important defenders Brenton Davidge and Chris Zurek also missed with rib and groin soreness respectively. All three will play in this weekend’s preliminary final at Tyabb. Frankston went into the match with an average points for of 106 and points against of 61. Some had suggested that this was the case due to their soft home and away draw. However, against the reigning premier, on two occasions, they have restricted the Buds to 31 points and now 57 points. Rosebud averages 15 goals (90 points) a game. The Buds have the best defence in the comp, averaging just nine goals (54 points) against. The Bombers were able to almost double that. They did this with Zac Longham and Scott Foster kicking just one goal and Michael Maiorino kicking a couple. Luke James, who wandered into the club just six weeks ago, was the most influential player on the ground with five goals. Midfielder James Degenhardt booted a couple of majors and fellow mids

in Sam Fox, Dale Sutton and Josh Francis all hit the scoreboard. The Bombers midfield dominated. Ryan Kitchen had a point to prove and he won the tap out count against the best in the business in Ben Dwyer. Dwyer probably outpointed him around the ground. Regardless, Kitchen ensured that his smalls got hands on the footy first and this is where many believed the game would be won or lost. The Frankston back half was superb, led by Ryan Marks-Logan and Jarryd
Sudoku and crossword solutions
Amalfi. Both were superb, along with the silkiness of Brian O’Carroll. The Buds looks limp in attack. Keegan Downie worked tirelessly but couldn’t hit the scoreboard, Ben Shultz had zero influence on the contest and the likes of Adam Rose and Glenn Peterson were unsighted in the forward half. Sean Downie and Ryan Spooner were outstanding for the Buds, Jackson McRae won comfortably against Longham and Nick Boswell was not only Rosebud’s best, but one of the
best three players on the ground. While the Bombers prepare for the big dance at Frankston Park in a fortnight, Rosebud needs to lick its wounds and prepare for a showdown against a rampaging Hastings. It’s taken a while but the Blues are finally playing consistently to the Brendan Dunne game plan. Dunne is a super coach who has a proven plan and the Blues are playing his way – they are reaping the rewards. Hastings withstood a number of challenges from the Eagles, who went
into the game without one of the best players in the competition in Scott Simpson, who injured a quad in the lead up. The Blues kicked away in the last quarter to win by more than six goals. I think with the Somerville FC, it’s a case of watch this space with Scott Simpson playing in WA and talk that Luke Rowe is heading to the US. It will be fascinating to see what unfolds at the nest.

Pines look doomed, Langy helps Mornington SOCCER
By Craig MacKenzie FRANKSTON Pines looks doomed to relegation from State 1 South-East while Langwarrin dented Malvern City’s championship aspirations in last weekend’s catch-up round. Pines slumped to a 4-1 loss at home to fellow struggler Berwick City on Saturday and is anchored to the foot of the table while Langwarrin dealt a body blow to Malvern City with a 1-0 victory at Lawton Park. A pivotal moment in the Pines contest came in the 16th minute when the referee overruled the linesman who had flagged for offside and was ignored initially. After Dejan Radojicic struck home a firm shot from close range the referee consulted the linesman then awarded the goal leaving Pines fans bewildered and upset. Pines struck the bar on three occasions throughout the contest highlighted in the 22nd minute by a stunning display of close control and movement at pace by Jordan Avraham. After jinking past a couple of opponents he unleashed a stinging strike that smashed against the underside of the bar and was scrambled clear. In the 24th minute Pines sweeper Ben Caffrey chose to push forward of his defence leaving a flat back three and Berwick didn’t need a second invitation as former Pines striker Orlando Meijas made it 2-0. Radojicic put the game out of Pines’ reach in the 33rd minute after Berwick again broke forward with Meijas in an offside position but this time the linesman failed to flag. Caffrey was replaced at half-time by Matthew Hames who went up front while striker Ioasa Saemo linked up with Nick Lekakis in central defence. Pines kept pressing and Avraham unleashed a volley in the 53rd minute that was tipped over by Berwick custodian Jeremy Figler. His counterpart, Pines keeper James Laminski, had a fine game and was unlucky to concede a fourth goal in the 78th minute. Berwick again caught Pines on the break and the ball was moved quickly to Franco Costantino on the left of the Pines area whose low shot bounced in front of a diving Laminski and crept inside the near post. Pines’ response was classy but too little and far too late. It came in the 82nd minute from a superb Matt Davis free kick after second half substitute Stefan Soler had been fouled on one of his many solo runs. League leader Mornington travelled to Mooroolbark on Saturday only to find out for the second time this season that the pitch was unplayable. Football Federation Victoria had told Mornington a few days earlier that the pitch was playable and the game would proceed. Mornington has booked Kingston City’s ground for Tuesday night this week hoping to gain FFV approval for the Mooroolbark match to finally go ahead but was waiting for the federation to respond to its request as we went to press. Langwarrin did Mornington a favour by knocking off high-flying Malvern City 1-0 at Lawton Park on Saturday. Langy’s Chris Driver and Alex Van Heerwarden had standout games against a strong Malvern side who dominated play for long periods. Malvern striker Ken Murray came close on a couple of occasions but was denied by two saves from Robert Acs and the goalpost on another occasion with a thumping header from a corner. In the second half the home side showed a lot more endeavour with Koray Suat forcing a superb save from Malvern keeper Gianmarco D’Oria and Caleb Nicholes posing a constant threat to Malvern’s central defensive pairing of Jake Maloney and Lloyd Clothier. The decisive moment came in the 66th minute when Langy teenager Nabil Mozaffaruddin rose high to head goalwards.

Winning grin: Langy striker Koray Suat.
D’Oria could only parry the ball onto the crossbar and Mozaffaruddin rifled home the rebound from a tight angle. Despite Malvern pressing hard over the final 20 minutes the home team showed great spirit and utilised all three subs in an endeavour to keep fresh legs on the park. It was a fine result for Langy who had Andy McIntyre pull out injured just prior to kick-off joining the injured list of Sam Scott, Dylan Kilner and John Guthrie. Harry McCartney reports that Seaford United left it late to edge out 10-man Sandringham 3-2 in their State 2 South-East contest at Sillitoe Reserve on Saturday. It took just eight minutes for Mitch Lander to unlock the Sandy defence with a strike into the bottom left-hand corner of goal. Nick Ormond then made it 2-0 with a longrange strike that beat Sandy keeper Corey Skinner and in the 40th minute Lander broke clear only to be brought down by Sandy defender John Buckley who was sent off. The resulting free kick from Paul McGuire hit the upright and bounced clear. Just before the interval Sandy counterattacked and although John Cronin-Diyou was denied initially by Seaford keeper Paul Digiorgio he couldn’t stop Cameron Gilhooley from following up for an easy tap-in to make it 2-1. Two minutes into the second half and the 10 men were level after Sandy striker Matt McCoy latched on to a mistake from the Seaford defence to easily sidefoot the ball past an advancing Digiorgio. Seaford had the bulk of possession in the last 40 minutes but Sandy seemed set to hold out until a low toe-poke across the six-yard box was tucked away by Seaford substitute Cam Syratt for the winner. Peninsula Strikers were overrun 5-0 by visitor St Kilda in their State 2 South-East clash on Saturday. Scorers were Conor Gaul (72nd minute, 82nd and 87th), Robson Buckley (26th) and John Connolly (39th). The result gave St Kilda a remarkable fifth straight title and catapulted the club into State 1 South-East next season and the verge of NPL status. “They’re different class both on the field and off,” said Strikers president Mark Brandon. “When our keeper Ritchie (Ojo) broke his leg against them they organised a whiparound on the day and they did the same thing after the match on Saturday which says a lot about them as a club.” NEXT WEEKEND’S GAMES Saturday, 3 September, 3pm: Frankston Pines v Mornington (Monterey Reserve), Berwick City v Langwarrin (Jack Thomas Reserve), Peninsula Strikers v Caulfield Utd Cobras (Centenary Park), Old Scotch v Seaford Utd (H.A. Smith Reserve), Keysborough v Skye Utd (Coomoora Reserve), Rosebud Heart v Chelsea (Truemans Road Recreation Reserve), Baxter v East Bentleigh (Baxter Park).

Hastings overrun Somerville for inspiring victory HASTINGS FNC
SATURDAY saw Hastings Football/ Netball Club take on Western Port rival Somerville Football/Netball Club in the first semi-final played at Devon Meadows. With a real sense of finals football in the air on a beautiful day and with the ground looking in peak condition the Hastings side were coming up against last year’s grand final winner and favourites. Our boys came out and played some fabulous team oriented football to set the game up with a five goal quarter with our forwards playing in front and marking everything that came there way, they moved into the 2nd quarter with a four goal lead. The game was now starting to tighten with Somerville kicking a couple of goals to be only a few goals down. Hastings defensive line was holding as the pressure was outstanding by both teams this game was turning into a fabulous contest with every clash between the players very physical. Half time arrived with the Hastings side holding a slender lead at the main break. After half time the quarter was very similar to the 2nd quarter with Somerville putting a lot of pressure on the Hastings side but Hastings were able to withhold this with our midfield group working as hard as any time they have throughout the year. With third quarter ending Hastings were now three points down with Somerville kicking to the scoring end in the last quarter. With an inspiring three quarter time
speech by our senior coach in front of a large supporter base the boys came out and played the most fabulous last quarter seen at Hastings for a very long time. They kicked five goals to zip and turned the game on its head with our players finishing the tough contest full of run was inspirational. Eell done to all involved it was great contest throughout the day. Now the club moves onto the Preliminary Final, where we met up with last year’s premiers Rosebud FNC with the game to played at Tyabb. What a fabulous opportunity for our supporters to get along and make this game into a home final so the club asks every member of the Hastings Football/ Netball club to get along and support the boys in their quest to play off in this year Grand Final.
