Tyabb takes flag

Pressure off: Tyabb girls after winning the Nepean netball premiership.

TYABB A-grade netballers are this year’s Nepean League premiers after beating Crib Point by one goal – 34 to 33. Tyabb director Leanne Hanson said players were still celebrating the win described by fans as one of the best games in the league’s six-year history. Crib Point got off to a quick start with some strong shooting but Tyabb clawed back and, by quarter time, the teams were level pegging at eight-all. Big rebounds and beautiful cover were features of the second quarter, as were big momentum swings - first to Tyabb and then to Crib Point’s advantage - and the scores were level at 20-all at the half time break. The third quarter was another quarter of momentum swings, with Tyabb players making some outstanding intercepts, but then throwing the ball away in seconds. It went into the last break two points down. Position changes to Tyabb seemed to work as players began to assert themselves and the Yabbies closed down the two-point deficit quickly. With noise levels reportedly “off the Richter scale” with supporters shouting for victory, the final few minutes of the game were a blur for many. Frantic activity in the dying seconds included precision passing and a penalty shot for goal as the siren goes: A deep breath and the shot goes in. The players screamed, coaching staff punched the air: the girls had realised their goal. Their dream was a reality. Tyabb had gone through the season undefeated and won the ultimate prize. Tyabb Football Netball Club’s best and fairest awards will be held at 7pm on 18 October at Mornington Racing Club.

Swiss visit by port protesters Keith Platt keith@mpnews.com.au DELEGATES representing nine community and environment groups have gone to Switzerland to tell the international wetland watchdog, the Ramsar Secretariat, that the ecology of Western Port is threatened by plans to expand the Port of Hastings. As a signatory to the Ramsar treaty Australia is obligated to protect Western Port wetlands which are on the mi-

gratory routes many bird species. The groups have told Ramsar authorities that the federal government is preparing to relinquish environment powers to the state government “under a one-stop policy” to make it easier to approve the port plans. They will now ask the federal government and the Environment Minister, Flinders MP Greg Hunt, “to respond to the Ramsar Convention Secretariat about the threat posed to Western Port”, Jeff Nottle, chairman

and spokesperson for Preserve Western Port Action Group, said. “All Victorians need to seek answers and take steps to prevent the economic and environmental disaster posed by the government’s plans to build an international container terminal at Hastings,” Mr Nottle said when announcing the release of a discussion paper questioning the “many shortfalls and costs” of the plan (www.preservewesternport. org.au/discussion-paper-forum/). While the community groups look

overseas to reinforce their fight against the port expansion, the Port of Hastings Development Authority continues to plan for the container port, announcing the imminent start of marine hydrodynamic and land based environmental studies. The next round of studies follows the completion in August of marine geotechnical and geophysical surveys, land-based geotechnical survey and a topographic survey. The authority – operating on a $110

million budget – is about to relaunch its Port of Hastings Development Update newsletter as the Port Progress which will focus on project developments, profile “team” members and “answer your frequently asked questions”. The final Development Update (Issue 6, September 2014) covers the authority’s move into larger offices complete with picture of staff and Hastings MP Neale Burgess; announces the start of the next round of studies.
