Traditions OF Academic Regalia

THE CUSTOM OF wearing academic regalia on commencement day has survived more than a thousand years. Dressing in caps, gowns, hoods and tassels for special occasions originated in medieval Europe and is patterned after the formal dress code of clergymen of that time period. This tradition serves as a reminder of the wearer’s responsibility in the scholarly world.

On most college campuses, the faculty and seniors appear in academic garb at ceremonies such as commencement and baccalaureate. Since 1895, colleges and universities in the United States have followed a uniform code specifying the type of cap and hood for each degree. The significance of the decorative costumes is determined by the sleeves and hoods.

Holders of doctoral degrees wear round bell sleeves. The gown is faced down the front and barred on the sleeves with black velvet or velvet of a color indicating the degree; the doctoral hood is large. The doctoral cap may include a gold tassel. Faculty participating in a commencement ceremony wear robes in colors of the institutions from which they graduated.

Master’s degree holders wear a long, closed sleeve with a slit near the upper arm; the hood is mid-sized. Bachelor’s degree holders wear a long, pointed sleeve. Those graduating with honors wear a gold cord around the shoulders. Hoods are lined with colors of the institution granting the degree (or one with which the wearer is associated) and are trimmed with velvet of the color distinctive of their degree.

2022 Student Awards

Faculty, Staff, & Alumni Awards

Delmer Dewey/Julia McCulloch Smith Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award

Aliyah Favela ’22

The Delmer Dewey/Julia McCulloch Smith Award, presented each year to outstanding students, is named for former Dean of Men Delmer Dewey, who died in 1953, and in memory of Julia McCulloch Smith, who died in 1930. The awards were first presented in 1954.

IT WAS WITH A little trepidation that Aliyah Favela ’22 of Ontario, Oregon, took a chance on Western – a school far enough away to be in a different time zone on the other side of the state. She’d really connected with the student guide who led her campus tour, but it was a handwritten note from her future RA that sealed the deal.

“She told me, ‘I’m really excited to see you are studying political science. I can't await to hear more about that!’ And she ended up being one of my best friends too,” recalls Favela. “I could just tell there was a different kind of community here. I felt like I could succeed.”

Favela is graduating with a degree in Social Science with a concentration in Political Science and minor in Psychology. She is a first-generation student who completed her studies in three years as Diversity Commitment Scholar with a 3.94 GPA. Favela says she is approaching what would be her fourth year of college as a kind of gap year, with plans to study for both the LSAT and GRE while she decides on her next steps.

“My long-term goal is to be an attorney or political journalist, which are kind of different from each other,” she says with a laugh. “But really, I’m interested in advocacy, working with people, hearing, and defending people.”

Engaging with the community in meaningful ways has always been important to Favela, who grew up volunteering with her parents. Though they didn’t call it that, to her family it was doing just what came naturally – helping out.

At WOU she worked as a Campus Ambassador and found numerous ways to jump headlong into volunteerism, working at the campus food pantry, vaccine clinics, and on environmental projects on and off-campus. She also dedicated time to the Multicultural Student Union, Unidos Club, MEChA, and Model UN, among other campus groups focused on cultural advocacy.

Favela says her favorite opportunity was participating in Western’s Discover Leadership program, where she received the Student of the Year award as a freshman and Mentor of the Year award as a senior. It was through those service projects and mentoring that Favela says she found her personal voice in leadership.

“I learned about tuning into my own skills and sense of leadership,” she says. “I think that’s a strong skill to have—to know how you operate as a leader. I learned that leaders come in all shapes and forms.”

Aliyah Favela

Favela says she credits her family and their support as a main motivator throughout school, and though she’s graduating college, she’s looking forward to a very specific mentoring opportunity on the horizon.

“My younger brother, RJ, is 13 and I’m really excited to be able to help him when he starts his process of applying to colleges,” she says.

“I’m ready to take the knowledge I’ve gained and experience from my time at Western and apply that to my own family.”

Delmer Dewey/Julia McCulloch Smith Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award Cheyanne Bumgardner ’22

The Delmer Dewey/Julia McCulloch Smith Award, presented each year to outstanding students, is named for former Dean of Men Delmer Dewey, who died in 1953, and in memory of Julia McCulloch Smith, who died in 1930. The awards were first presented in 1954.

CHEYANNE BUMGARDNER ’22, is a graduate of the Honors Program with a major in American Sign Language/English Interpreting, minors in ASL and Psychology, and a Leadership Certificate.

Bumgardner, who hails from Grants Pass, Oregon, took her first ASL class during her junior year of high school. “I took it to fulfill my second language requirement,” she recalls. “I had never even thought about interpreting as a career, but my instructor said, ‘You’re pretty good at this, you should consider becoming an interpreter.’ So I did some research, found Western and it all just went from there.”

With her area of study solidified, there was another aspect of college Bumgardner was curious about.

“Because I went to a nontraditional high school, I didn’t have many opportunities to participate in student leadership. I knew that was something I wanted to do when I got to college,” she says.

Bumgardner approached leadership with ambition, starting as a Hall Host leading tours of residence halls, then in the Discover Leadership program well as a variety of admissions and orientation groups. As a coordinator of the university’s PLUS Team, Bumgardner helped facilitate new student orientation activities, including being part of the team that built the newest orientation program on campus, Destination Western. At one point, she was coordinator for PLUS Team, the Campus Ambassadors program, and Campus Visitation simultaneously.

“The skills I gained through leadership have benefited me academically, socially, and going into my career as an interpreter,” says Bumgardner. “It’s not just about being an

orientation leader or campus tour guide. It’s about building a community and developing important soft skills that come from those out-of-theclassroom experiences.”

She’s already putting those skills to work in Southern Oregon, where she recently accepted a position as an educational sign language interpreter working with K-12 students. In the coming months, she plans to complete the rigorous certification requirements for different types of sign language interpreting, with a goal of someday working in mental health settings.

This goal correlates nicely with her honors thesis. After finding very little published research on the phenomenon of vicarious trauma within the profession, Bumgardner decided to tackle it herself.

“This concept has always been fascinating to me. Most current research talks about post-traumatic care. There is a significant lack of research on what we can do to educate, prepare, and prevent it, so I decided to write the article I wish I had when I was first learning about vicarious trauma,” she says with a smile. Her findings will soon be available to others on WOU's Digital Commons website.

As for her time at Western, especially as a firstgeneration college student, she’s grateful to have landed at a small, community-oriented campus where it was easy to meet people and make an impact.

“The value of building relationships and connections with faculty, staff, and fellow students can’t be underestimated,” she says. “College is really all about what you’re willing to put into it. I’ve loved being in a place where I truly did get to learn something new every day.”

9Commencement 2022

Outstanding Graduate Student Award Whitney Higginbotham ’22

The Outstanding Graduate Student Award honors a student who has demonstrated superior achievements in scholarship and academics, character, leadership and initiative during graduate studies.

IT WAS A YEARNING to take control of her career that drew Whitney Higginbotham ’22 back to Western for a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership.

After graduating from WOU in 2012 with an undergraduate degree in Community Health Education, she took a job with Salem Health. Her first position was as an outreach operations specialist for the hospital’s cancer awareness program and for six years she worked in clinical research, managing regulatory processes.

“I was ready to grow in my role, but I didn't know where I could go within the clinical research world,” she recalls. “As much as I loved clinical research, I found that I had worked myself into a corner. I had become a little bit too specialized with my experience.”

As she interviewed for new roles, she was also starting to hear a refrain—she needed a master's degree or more relevant experience. Both suggestions caused Higginbotham a great deal of internal conflict. She’d never considered getting a master’s degree and she wondered whether she should leave research altogether.

“I never thought I would get my master's degree ever because academically I struggle quite a bit,” she says. But with some encouragement and a gentle nudge from Amber Deets, Director of Graduate Student Success & Recruitment, Higginbotham felt emboldened to take the next step in her career.

Not only has she learned new skills, Higginbotham says she’s gained confidence and learned more about herself in the process. “The knowledge and skills that I learned about and practiced, means I can work in many different

industries if I chose to, which is incredible, because I find that I really like to change what I like to do,” she says. “I just see myself doing so many things.”

In addition to her studies, Higginbotham worked as graduate assistant for Dr. Kathleen Cassidy, the Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences, lending support to various committees on campus with her skills as a data analyst. Higginbotham reached out to an adjunct professor to see if there were opportunities to work with the City of Salem on her final project, and subsequently partnered with the Public Works Department to benchmark burnout, and provide tools and strategies to prevent it.

Higginbotham envisions eventually landing in consultant work, with a focus on change management, organizational development and process improvement.

“That's where I see myself because it involves working with different people and projects consistently, which is what I like,” she says. “I loved that my classmates were from all different backgrounds, some very different from my own, including military, healthcare, academia, business – all over.”

And while the year and a half of her studies were mostly online, even that experience had a silver lining, giving her an opportunity to hone skills that she may not have considered in the past.

“I learned how to relate to people in a remote setting and connect with others from my home office. That was a great experience to have and a push forward with the way things are going in different careers and industries,” she says. Most importantly, the Organizational Leadership program has opened a whole world of new possibilities.

OHSU School of Nursing-Monmouth Campus Golden Lamp Award

Raelyn Alamani Kanoho ’22

The Golden Lamp Award is based on the American Nurses Association Code for Professional Nurses and the Florence Nightingale Pledge. It is given in recognition of exemplary demonstration of scholarship, leadership, professional commitment, innovative contributions and humanitarian ideals.

RAELYN ALAMANI KANOHO ’22, first became interested in healthcare when her grandpa was diagnosed with cancer.

“I told him before he passed away that I was going to go to college and become his nurse,” she says. “Unfortunately, that didn't happen.”

While the impetus for Alamani Kanoho’s journey into healthcare is tinged with sadness, she is thankful nonetheless for the fire it ignited. Her first steps toward a career in healthcare included becoming a certified nursing assistant while she was an undergraduate studying Community Health at WOU. Upon completion of her bachelor’s degree, she started work in the Oncology Unit at Salem Health.

“It drove my passion, working with patients and seeing them go from being really, really weak at one point to being strong and being able to leave the hospital,” says Alamani Kanoho. “Then I wanted to further my education and actually become a nurse.”

In 2019, Alamani Kanoho enrolled in OHSU School of Nursing and hasn’t looked back. She’s deftly juggled the stresses and responsibilities of a full-time job as a CNA with demands of nursing school, including almost two years of online schooling.

“I take time away from school to be present with family, whether it’s Saturday night dinners at my grandma's house or spending the day cuddling with my dog,” she says. “They're the most supportive people I know. They're probably the reason that I'm here and striving to be better in nursing school. I don't think I would've made it through the last three years without them.”

During her senior practicum in the Emergency Department at Peace Health in Springfield, Oregon, Alamani Kanoho found a passion for critical care.

Raelyn Alamani Kanoho

“It’s been eye-opening,” she says. “I chose the emergency room because I wanted a challenge. It was something scary to me at first. You always hear horror stories about how crazy the emergency room can be and after the first two days, it was like, I love this. I love the hustle, bustle and teamwork. That drove me to want to take care of critical care patients, in either the emergency room setting or in an ICU setting.”

Alamani Kanoho lives in Salem with her fiancé, Tyler, a middle school math teacher, and says her immediate goal is to find a nursing position in the area. She also hasn’t ruled out more schooling.

“It’s been a little crazy, I’m not going to lie,” she says with a laugh. “But the faculty, they are just so supportive and encouraging. And, because we’re such a small cohort, I have had the opportunity to get to know a lot of my cohort members and to grow together.”

She also credits prioritizing a work-life balance as central to her success.

“I don’t think you’re ever done learning in nursing. I’m planning on getting specialty certifications first and then giving back,” she says, explaining that the current shortage in nurses means fewer nurse preceptors to supervise nursing students during clinical rotations. After earning her specialty certifications Alamani Kanoho says she would like to become a preceptor, and is considering an advanced practice RN that would enable her to work in anesthesiology.

MARIO AND ALMA PASTEGA

Excellence in Scholarship Award

Gareth R. Hopkins, Ph.D.

The Mario and Alma Pastega Excellence in Scholarship Award honors a classified or administrative staff member who demonstrates exceptional service to the university. Once nominees are received, a screening committee submits a list of finalists to the president, who then chooses the recipient.

GARETH R. HOPKINS, PH.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology, is this year’s recipient of the Mario and Alma Pastega Award for Excellence in Scholarship

Hopkins, an ecologist whose scholarly work centers on understanding how organisms are affected by and respond to environmental change, is perhaps best known internationally for bringing a multi-disciplinary and evolutionary perspective to conservation issues. His prolific research activities include the publication of 30 peer reviewed papers and, with his students, presenting work at 20 national and international conferences. Since arriving on campus in 2018, Hopkins has mentored 25 undergraduate research students.

“Getting undergraduate stu dents involved in research can be completely transformational,” says Hopkins. To that end, he has forged new partnerships for WOU that seamlessly integrate teaching and research. One such project brings together WOU students, the Oregon Depart ment of Fish & Wildlife, City of Salem, and Oregon State Univer sity professor Ashley D’Antonio and her students to study how endangered local freshwater turtle species respond to habitat restoration and human recreation at Minto Brown Park in Salem.

The multifaceted research project is giving students an opportunity to engage in everything from field surveys and analysis of camera images, to the design and creation of turtle basking structures. The project has also provided an opportunity for WOU Computer Science Associate Professor Lucas Cordova and his students to create a mobile app and website (www.oregonturtles.org) to engage community members in turtle monitoring efforts.

Another collaboration, with WOU Biology Professor Ava Howard and a team of undergraduates, is monitoring the responses of insects, amphibians, and reptiles to restoration of an endangered Oregon White Oak ecosystem near Adair Village outside of Corvallis.

“We have students focused on acorns, tree physiology, birds, amphibians, reptiles and insects, all working together in a cross-disciplinary way with the overarching theme of how we conserve ecosystems and the organisms that live in them,” says Hopkins. “It is a local project of local concern but with regional, national and international consequences.”

Research opportunities like these can build self-esteem and foster students’ sense of self-belief that they have something to contribute, says Hopkins. It can also open doors that may otherwise feel closed.

Gareth R. Hopkins

In the case of the turtle habitat project, Western students have interacted with Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife staff and presented their research findings, both of which can lead to internships and future job prospects.

Hopkins also routinely encourages his students to present their work at conferences, where they are seen as equals with scientists who are eager to hear their findings.

“They’re analyzing data, writing it up, and presenting it to the scientific community. They are contributing,” he says. “When they give a presentation, I always tell them, Remember, no matter how nervous you are, you are the expert on this. There's no one who knows what you did better than you, because it's original research.”

12 Western Oregon University

MARIO AND ALMA PASTEGA Excellence in Teaching Award

Erin Baumartner, Ph.D.

The Mario and Alma Pastega Award for Excellence in Teaching honors a full-time faculty member who demonstrates excellence in teaching and relationships with students, both in and out of the classroom. Once nominees are received, a screening committee submits a list of finalists to the president, who then chooses the recipient.

ERIN BAUMGARTNER, PH.D., Professor of Biology and this year’s recipient of the Mario and Alma Pastega Award for Excellence in Teaching, joined the faculty in 2008.

Baumgartner, whose background is in marine biology, specifically fish behavior, says that her mother often jokes that she declared her major in kindergarten – such was her love of fish, beginning with the freshwater fishes of Kansas, where she grew up.

But it was an unsatisfactory experience in her first college-level biology class that has had a lasting impact on her teaching.

“I was sitting there, being lectured at, getting factoids, and all the joy was being sucked out of it,” she recalls. “I remember thinking, I thought I liked biology, but I guess I don’t. I regularly take that memory with me into every class I teach. Because if my students feel that way, then I’m doing something wrong.”

By bringing a bit of fun into the classroom, Baumgartner hopes to spark students’ curiosity and show how biology and science are relevant to their everyday lives.

Case in point is one of the first-year seminars that she teaches: Fast Zombies Versus Slow Zombies.

“I'm a huge fan of horror movies, books, podcasts and TV series,” she says. “So we look at the underlying biology behind horror tropes, why things scare us, and what causes a physiological fear response, as a way to understand some basic biology. We talk about how you might have the same fear response when you ride a roller coaster

or take a test and how you can manage that response. It’s really a lot of fun.”

This may sound like fun and games, but to Baumgartner, it’s a philosophical approach that centers students. She readily admits that many students in her general biology sequence won’t go on to become biology majors, and that’s OK. Her goal is to empower any student in her class, science major or not, to feel confident asking questions, using scientific habits of mind and scientific information to better understand the world they live in.

“By and large, Western students are excited to be here,” she says. “They are excited to learn, find out new things, and try something new. They recognize what being here represents to them and the people who care about them. They’re not taking it for granted.”

As for her part, Baumgartner doesn’t take it for granted either. She feels a great responsibility to meet her students where they are and help them develop resilience to set them up for success. She likes to turn the phrase “collegeready” on its head.

“I want to foster a growth mind-set for my students. It's going to take work, a little bit of practice, maybe some failure moving forward, but you can do hard things,” she says. “It’s on us, in the teaching profession, to be what I call student-ready. It is contingent on me to do the things that I need to do to support students, work with them and help them build and add to the strategies, practices, and information they need to be successful and to be able to do hard things.”

13Commencement 2022

MARIO AND ALMA PASTEGA Excellence in Service Award

Breeann Flesch, Ph.D.

The Mario and Alma Pastega Excellence in Service Award honors a classified or administrative staff member who demonstrates exceptional service to the university. Once nominees are received, a screening committee submits a list of finalists to the president, who then chooses the recipient.

BREEANN FLESCH, PH.D., professor and chair in the Computer Science Division, is this year’s recipient of the Mario and Alma Pastega Award for Excellence in Service.

As a mathematician and computer scientist, Flesch is trained to question assumptions. And as a voice for change on the Western campus and in the local community, she’s using those skills to serve the greater good.

“Questioning assumptions means something very specific in a mathematics or computer science sense,” says Flesch. “But if you take that to the realm of systemic change, it means that you don't rest on your laurels. If it's always been done a certain way, what are the underlying assumptions? And doing something because it's always been done that way has certainly not served large groups of folks of varying identities.”

It’s this approach that Flesch brought to general education reform at Western, first as co-chair of the university’s General Education Task Force and later, serving on the General Education Committee. Flesch and the team of colleagues she worked with were instrumental in evaluating and changing important aspects of the university’s general education framework, with an eye to how certain graduation requirements were negatively impacting first-generation students, students of color, and those from low-income backgrounds.

“WOU prides itself in being an access institution and Emerging Hispanic Serving Institution, with many first-generation students. We need to make sure we are being really mindful of our students and the debt they incur to get our

college degrees,” she says, noting that a failure to address the systemic shortcomings has a direct impact on social mobility and the future success that students work so hard to achieve.

Flesch says her sense of urgency around systemic change has been influenced in part by the experience of being an underrepresented gender in a STEM field.

“As you can imagine, being a woman, getting a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics had its challenges,” she says. “Now I'm in a position of privilege, I feel it’s my responsibility and my job to topple that patriarchy and make sure other folks don't have to endure in the same way that I did.”

To that end, much of Flesch’s service work falls under the heading of diversity, equity and inclusion, such as being a SafeZone Trainer and Search Advocate. She also a coorganizer of Fem in STEM, to connect underserved and ally students in STEM fields.

“For me service is activism. Service is action for political or social change,” says Flesch. “I have a habit of raising my hand when I think something needs to be done or changed. I don’t want to sit back and complain. I raise my hand and do the work. That’s what service is, doing that work.”

This commitment extends beyond campus as well, where Flesch recently helped Monmouth’s Central School District revise the sexual education curriculum, using current data, demographics and health statistics to bring the district into alignment with state standards and to better serve students in the district. She also serves the greater community as a member of the Marion & Polk County Communicable Disease Task Force.

Alumni Award of Excellence

Bec Williams ’98

The Alumni Award of Excellence is awarded each year to an alum (living or deceased) for his or her contributions and services to the university and community as well as for his or her distinguished professional work.

BEC WILLIAMS ’98, this year’s recipient of the Alumni Award of Excellence, grew up in Eugene and learned at a young age the value of hard work and the importance of community. She’s leaned on both to get through the last two years.

Bec Williams readily admits the last two years have been incredibly difficult. She effectively lost her job, and her wife, Annette Leonard ’96, has faced serious health issues.

Playground Sports, the Eugene-based company Williams founded in 2009 and built to include dozens of adult sports leagues as well as athletic competitions for corporate picnics and fundrais ers, was temporarily shuttered because of the pandemic.

“We really did go completely dormant for nine months. I wasn’t doing anything with the public, but I was definitely com ing into my office and crying every day,” she says ruefully. “I took some solace knowing that my WOU degree in community health education was versatile enough that I could transition to a new career if it came to that.”

Many alumni know Williams through the tail gating events she’s been hosting at football games since 2013. These events are all about community for Williams, giving current undergrads an oppor tunity to mingle with alumni, and revel in shared connections and experiences.

With the personal challenges she was facing and tailgating on hold, it would have been easy to go silent, but instead, Williams raised her hand to ask how she could help.

“I knew I wasn’t going to be able to help in the same ways necessarily, but said that if were other groups that need something, I would help,” she recalls.

She stepped up to help the women’s soccer team when they made it to nationals in 2021, has initiated fundraising matches for annual giving day, issued friendly challenges to fellow alums to up their gifts, and contributed to the Stonewall Center, WOU’s LGBTQ campus support center.

Knowing she can make even a small differ ence for a single student on campus, is what inspires her to give back, says Williams.

“I honestly didn’t think I would ever be a do nor. That’s not the kind of disposable income we had in my core family grow ing up. It's not something that was modeled for me. But I never want someone who is hungry for education to not get to go because of income. A $25 gift can help someone get two steps closer to something they're trying to achieve, to make sure that they have their needs met so they can be the best student they can be and contribute to the community of Western,” she says.

And things are looking up for Williams. She’s recently re-started her leagues and is looking forward to hosting tail gate games at WOU this spring while expanding the program to include lawn games for women’s softball and other athletic events. And she’s thrilled that her nephew is even attending WOU.

“I had this very precious nest at home, where my mom taught us how to be good humans and make good decisions. And then I moved to this other beautiful nest – Western – where I was supported and shown I was part of the larger community, an extended family that you start growing into and learning from,” says Williams.
